Game 4 vs. Sharks (October 13th)
They say that defense wins championships, and offense sells the tickets. If that’s true than we should win the championship with a sold out crowd cheering us all the way. The Chops weren't much of a challenge and we beat them 4-1, not shooting at all in the 3rd period in an attempt to stay classy. I had an almost assist to Waley, who scored and also had an assist, and he played like a man. It was good to see him out there playing his game and not letting anything get to his head.

While I love the experience of professional hockey, it no longer provides the escape hockey brings. I am under so much pressure to perform at the highest level, and eventually make it big in the NHL. Also, now there are so many rules its not even fair. Coach says we aren't allowed to talk to anyone outside the organization that has any affiliation to hockey at all. My former teammate and pal Chris Regiford plays in leagues, and coach says if I talk to him bad things will happen. Also, no dating during the season. This sucks, because your more likely to find a girl who has heard of you at games or during the season then afterwards when all eyes are on football. Sometimes I wish I just give it all up and go back to when i was kid and I would be playing street hockey from dawn to dusk. The only rule was no intentionally hurting some one, the only ref's were mom's calling kids in for supper, and the only coach was yourself.

At the end of the third period I acted on an impulse and called my father for the first time in the three months or so since I had been in Providence. He didn't answer at first and I was glad. I hadn't planned out what I was going to say. Should I be angry, or comforting? He was going through a tough time. But he couldn't keep running away. I went to press the end button on my cell phone and at the last second I heard someone's voice. "This is the VAPD and this celluar device has been confiscated in a criminal investigation. Please contact the department with any questions or investigations."

Game 5 (vs Chops) October 14th,
You would never believe the week I have been having. It started with my first career goal, assist, and a 2-0 record. Unfortunately it’s all down hill from there. We lost to the much less than impressive Peoria Rivermen 3-1, with me scoring the lone goal, and our defense just getting much more than they could handle. Coach always is saying that defense should let up two or less goals, and the offense should score two or more. That way, if we are good at overtime, we can’t lose. You better believe this less than stellar performance didn’t make him happy. I wasn’t aware a person could spend the final two periods and intermissions yelling non-stop. It’s a good thing that assistant coach Bruce Cassidy is on my side because of my pretty solid play; I can’t imagine what its like on the defense.

Then there is the whole situation with my dad and his cell phone. I still haven’t figured it all out yet, because I need to work around my mother, who thankfully isn’t aware of the situation. She is going to be devastated when she finds out. So far I know that my father is alive, and in his one phone call he chose to call his work friend and hunting buddy (my father’s favorite hobby is hunting) Tom Herold. From the reports I have heard from people from around Virginia, I get the feeling alcohol is involved. And I am pretty sure he isn’t having an affair, because how would that relate to calling Tom? I am still trying, but this is going to be a tough time, especially if (and when) my mom finds out.

I got home to my apartment with Wacey around 2 PM today after a long hard day of practice. When I arrived there was a four man team of Virginia Police Department detectives in the apartment looking around for whatever it was they wanted. Here’s how the conversation went:

          Me: Can we help you?
Police Man: Just stay out of our way (placed warrant in my hand)
Me: Did either of us do something wrong?
PM: Sometimes you can be guilty by association. Come on guys, there’s nothing to help us in here.

It’s too bad that it occurred to me afterwards this had something to do with my dad. We were off until Monday night, in which we played the Rivermen, so I decided it was time for a little road trip down to the Virginia State Jail.

Game 6 (at Rivermen) October 20th
We lost again today to the Rivermen, who really aren’t that talented of a bunch. With the amount of young future stars on our team, our consistency really puzzles me. I was told before the game that I would be playing with the second line, so I knew I needed to step it up to earn their respect. We may have lost, but I (once again) had the lone goal, and also set up my teammates a lot of times where they just blew it. It was nice, all in all, to just get back in the rink though, with all that has been going on.

Going down to the jail was a disaster in many ways. My mother called me on the way and I stupidly told her I was going to be in town. She asked me to come over, and I decided it was best to just tell her the truth. As I am sure you can rightfully assume she was devastated. She begged and begged me to let her come to the jail, but it just wasn’t going to happen. She had been hurt enough in one day. I however wasn’t sure how much pain was left to come for me…

I arrived at the jail and waited in the pathetic excuse of a lobby as the receptionist (is that what they call people who work jail desks) found someone to usher me to my father’s cell. As soon as he saw me he looked down and I immediately knew this wasn’t just some petty theft. The man really messed up good this time. He looked me straight in the eyes after his moment of shame and spoke in a loud voice, words you could tell he had rehearsed. “I made a mistake, and sometimes in life some of the mistakes you make can’t just erase. I made one of those. I am sorry son,” he looked at his feet and started his explanation.

New format looks good. So does the story. You need to close the cell door and give your father a beat down, jailhouse style!

                                October 20th (continued)
“Me, Tom, and Craig Johnson, you know the guy I used to work with, right? I am sure you’ve met him before; he has short blond hair, deep blue eye, about 6’1. I have definitely introduced him to you.”
                                “Please continue.”
“Right, of course. Okay well we were just all sitting at a bar, getting wasted, which I won’t deny was very stupid. All of us have lost our jobs, and really feel there is nothing left to live for, we are kind of just waiting to die.” That pissed me off, he was still MARRIED, remember. “Tom suggested we go hunting, while we were drunk, and because we were it sounded like a great idea. So, we went to Tom’s place, got the hunting equipment and left to head for the woods. While we were in the car, Craig was talking about my hockey career,” he looked down “and how it ended. It really messed me up in the head, so now I was drunk, angry, and depressed. When we got to the woods, none of us could hit a thing. It is really hard to shoot a shotgun drunk, in case you were every planning on it. Anyway, I saw a dear right to the right of Craig, shot my gun, but in my head I am not sure what I was shooting for. When I hit Craig, Tom ran, and I went to help him, but it was too late."
