"Grieve, Huff Star in Rays' Win."

It was a good night for both Ben Grieve and Aubrey Huff. Ben Grieve went 4-5 against his old team including a 2-run homer in the 9th inning. Huff went 3-5 with a 2-run homer that put the Rays up in the 7th inning. "It felt great to put together a comeback victory," said a smiling Huff. The Rays fell behind early 4-0 in the 1st inning. Soon thereafter, Rays starter Victor Zambrano calmed down and regained his cool and kept the A's bats at bay. Oakland starter Mark Mulder pitched well, but, the Rays' bats just seemed to chip away at his lead and finally when Mulder left the flood-gates opened. When the Rays tied it up at 4, Zambrano headed out for the 5th inning and let up a leadoff homerun to A's 1B Erubiel Durazo, "All I thought was here we go again," said Rays pitching coach Chris Bosio, "I thought we did it again, pitch poorly, get it under control and have our offense bring us back only to let it slip away." The Rays will finish up their series in Oakland and head up to Seattle for the much anticipated series between the Mariners and Rays.

"Oh Soooo Close...Rays Lose it in 8th Inning."

Lou Piniella's return to Seattle, was almost that much sweeter. Unfortunately, a diving-catch by the man he was swapped for, Randy Winn, ended all hopes of a Rays 9th inning comeback. Rays starter Jeff Weaver had a good outing, he pitched 7 and 1/3 innings allowing 7 hits and 2 runs while striking out 9. Weaver left the game in the 8th and Andy Pratt, just called up from Durham made his first appearance with the club this season. Pratt made quick work of John Olerud and then faced Brett Boone who took Pratt yard, "I just hung my curve over the plate and he took care of it," said a disgusted Pratt after the game. In the 9th the Rays' Travis Lee and Marlon Anderson were 2 quick outs for Mariners closer Kaz Sasaki. However, Toby Hall worked the count full and managed a bloop single. With 2 outs and a man on, the Rays most consistent hitter for the past month, Jason Tyner, came up to the plate and smacked a line drive single to left. Carl Crawford came up to the plate and poped a 2-1 fastball to left field, "I thought it was gonna drop, I really did. Randy made on hell of a play on the ball. I'm still not sure if he caught it or just trapped it. Either way, it was extremely close to dropping in for a hit, that would've given us a bases loaded situation with Julio [Lugo] coming up. I'm sure if that ball had dropped, we'd have tied the game up," stated Carl Crawford. Rays Manager Lou Piniella who passionately argued the call had this to say, "I saw it, he didn't catch it, he trapped it, but, we weren't getting any consistency on the calls all day. Hell, they called Travis [Lee] out on a play where John [Olerud] didn't even have his foot on the bag, he was still in the air from jumping for the throw and they still called him out! So, I can't say I'm surprised at how they called the catch." The Rays finish up in Seattle and then head home for the All-Star break. Who will be the Rays representative? That has yet to be announced, but, word is either Baldelli, Huff or Tyner will be in Chicago representing the Rays.

                  "Another Frustrating Loss."

First the Rays fall behind 5-0 only to come back and tie the game up. Once again the Rays bullpen blows the lead...ok, no problem, the Rays' bats were on fire, the Rays tie it up at 6. With Rocco Baldelli on 2nd base and 0 outs in the bottom of the 9th the Rays failed to bring Rocco home. We shouldn't be surprised at what happened in the top of the 10th a Rafael Palmeiro homerun that would do the Rays in as they couldn't score in the bottom half of the inning. Once again blame must fall on the bullpen. You may win as a team and lose as a team, but, lately, the bullpen seems to be actually trying to blow leads. "I have no idea what we can do." Said a distraught Piniella after the heart-breaking loss. It seems like this team can be good, but you can't call them good. Good teams find ways to win and bad teams find ways to lose. That's what the Devil Rays have done over the last few weeks...find ways to lose.
