            Owner Attempts to Solidify Future

            Port Charlotte (AP)-

Owner Leo Howell, as discovered from a conference call to his home in South West Florida, is in the process of extending the contracts of John Lynch and Derrick Brooks for 7 years each. He is also looking at restructuring Curtis Martin's deal. "My only concern is the payroll in the future" says Howell. "I know that I can spread the salary out, but it must increase year by year to intice a player, so i am contemplating raising the signing bonuses for these players, and reducing yearly salary."

Howell has also contacted Deion Sanders, and is working on a deal for the rights to Woodrow Dantzler from the Cowboys.

Owner Howell is Shaking things up

                  Tampa(AP)-

The Buccaneers new owner has taken control of the front office, and shown no mercy. On Tuesday, he cut back Aaron Stecker, wide out charled Lee, tackle Buck Gurly, and rookie guard Lance Niimo, none of which hold cap penalties. Then on Wednesday, he signed Deion SAnders to a 3 year, 5 million dollar deal, with a 1 and a half mil signing bonus.

They also aquired FS/QB/KR Woody Dantzler from the Cowboys for a sixth round draft choice.

Also, one of Howell's priorities coming in was to secure the future of the Buc's, and he did so...

John Lynch signed a 17 million dollar deal to last 5 years, with a 4 mil sign on

Derrick Brooks inked 4 years for 19 milion, 4.2 sign on bonus

and Defensive Tackle Anthony "Booger" McFarland signed a massive 7 yr deal worth 28.4 million, under which he will make 1.3 million in 2003, but in 2009, he will male 6 million dollars.

After all these transactions, Coach Gruden named Dantzler and Sanders starting return me for Sunday's home-opener with the Panthers

Buc's Find That Cats are Tougher to Tame than Eagles

                        (St. Pete)-

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers troumphed 30-17 over the Carolina Panthers, but this game was too close for Jon Grudens comfort.

The game started off well. The first play from scrimmage, veteran QB Rodney Peete stepped up and fired a bullet over the middle, which Mushin Muhammed bobbles. Dwight Smith hits Muhammad, and John Lynch grabs the ball out of mid air at the Panthers 30. But the offnse stumbled out of the gate, and on 3 consectuive plays the Buc's committed a holding penalty, gave up a Sack, and fumble a draw play hand-off, which Roman Oben fell on at the 47, out of Grammatica's feild goal range. Tupa punts the ball, and it is downed just inside the 20. The Panther drive downfield, but at midfeild, they cough the ball up, and Booger McFarland runs it back to the 44 of the Cat's. After a nice string of runs and passes, Mike Alstott rumbles through Mike Minter on a swing pass on his way to a 17 yard touchdown. The rest of the first half was a defensive struggle, as he two teams were held to just feild goals, two for the Buc's, one of the Panthers. The Half ended 13-3.
At the end of the first half, Woodrow (Woody) Dantzler took his first NFL snap at quarterback, and scrambled for 17 yards on a naked bootleg.

The 3rd quarter proved to be the Panther's time to shine. The Buccaneers received the opening kick-off, but were stalled at midfield, and punted it away. The Cat's drove the ball 87 yards for a touchdown, capped off by a 22 yard reception by Mushin Muhammed. Dantzler got his first carreer completion on the insuing drive, and set up Grammatica for a 40 yarder to make the score 16-10

Carolina marches down the feild, only to be stopped by a Ronde Barber interception. The next drive chewed time off the clock, and ended with a Mike Alstott 2 yd TD run.

Then it got way to close...

The Cats were in a 3rd and 23, and threw a out route to muhammed, and he was stopped after only 15 yards, but Corey Ivy committed a 15 yd Facemask, and the Cats had 1st and 10 at the Bucs 44

                        "I was scared" said Ivy

The next play, Ronde Barber was burnt deep for a 34 yard pass, and the insuing play was a TD pass to Magnum the tight end. 23-17.

The Cat's elect to kick it deep with 1:45 left and all time outs remaining, and Tampa Bay punts it away with 1:00 left. The dive started at the Panther's 28, and the first play, Peete throws the ball right to Deion Snaders, who drops it. 3rd down, Ivy roughs the passer to add 15 yards to a 34 yard catch by Magnum. The next play was a circus catch at the 7 yard line by Phroel. With :25 secs left, Ronde Barber picks off an attemped fade pass that was underthrown, and runs it back 100 yards for a TD.

                        A sigh of releif.

Brian Kelly intercepts a last chance try to get down the feild, and the Buc's emerge victorious.

                        30-17

Game ball goes to Ronde Barber!
