COLORADO TECH TOROS
From this day on, this thread with be the unofficial home of one of the up-and-coming athletic programs in the NCAA, the Colorado Tech University Toros. CTU began play in the Big 12 in football in 2005 and in basketball in 2004. Let's start out with a brief history of the football program.
TOROS FOOTBALL
Led by head coach Jim Macklin, one of the few African-American head coaches in the country, The Colorado Tech Toros began play in the NCAA in 2004 as a provisional Division 1 school. They played a schedule of 1-AA, Mountain West, WAC and Big 12 teams and went 10-2 with blemishes to archrivals Colorado State and Colorado. Yet the high-flying offense led by Junior QB Dennis Fry who threw for over 4000 yards in that first season impressed the Big 12 enough to be given an invite. They were put into the Big 12 South replacing fellow big offense program Texas Tech. The announcement was made midway through the season, just in time for the Toros basketball team to play the 2004 season in the Big 12.
Turning our attention back to football, the Toros were humiliated in their first season in the Big 12. They finished the season with a brutal 3-8 record with a 2-6 conference record. The lone bright spot in a terrible season for the program was an upset victory over then #6 Nebraska Cornhuskers in Lincoln. That year was also the swan song for celebrate QB Dennis Fry who graduated with an impressive 7500 yards passing in just 2 NCAA seasons.
In 2006, the keys to the CTU offense were handed to Senior QB Jeff Smith. Unfortunately, with Smith the team performed no better than the prior season. They started with a terrible 1-3 record including losses to Missouri, Texas A&M and in-state rivals Colorado State. Coach Macklin had seen enough, he called upon his Freshman QB Wally McCoy. The dynamic McCoy was exactly what the doctor ordered. His ability to beat other teams with his legs as well as his arms was vital. In his first game as the Toro starting QB, he led the Toros to a decisive victory in Boulder over the Colorado Buffaloes. From there, the Toros rolled on winning 3 of their next 4 games, setting up a matchup in Norman with #14 Oklahoma. Colorado Tech sat with a conference record of 4-3 while Oklahoma sat with a conference record of 5-2 heading into the game, meaning that a Toros win would send them to an improbable date at the Big 12 Championship game. They did not disappoint as a 33-32 win over the Sooners sent the Toros to the Big 12 Championship game against the same Missouri team that had defeated them earlier in the season. With McCoy under center there was no problem as the Toros dominated the Tigers en route to a 48-34 rout sending the Bulls to a BCS bowl in their first ever bowl game. It was a stiff challenge for the Toros as they were sent to the Nokia Sugar Bowl and a date with the SEC Champion #6-ranked South Carolina Gamecocks. South Carolina dominated most of the game, but an improbable last-minute TD sank their hopes (details below) and the Toros had finished an amazing season winning the Big 12 and the Sugar Bowl.
2007 was very similar to 2006. The Toros steamrolled the out-of-conference competition going 3-0 out of conference, however, they struggled within the conference as McCoy struggled to find consistency. A 7-4 overall record with a 4-4 conference record was enough to send the Toros to the EV1.net Houston Bowl and a rematch with the 6-5 South Carolina Gamecocks. This time it was the Toros turn to choke away a sure bowl victory. The Bulls blew a 27-6 fourth quarter lead and fell to the Gamecocks 31-27.
Top 3 Greatest Games in Toros history:
3) 2005 - CTU @ Nebraska - 14-12 W
The Toros were the punching bag of the Big 12 headed into this game vs #6 Nebraska. The Bulls were down just 10-7 at the shadow of their own goalposts with 5 minutes remaining when Senior QB Dennis Fry took a sack in the endzone giving the Huskers a 5-point lead and the ball. The defense would make a stop and allow the Toros O to step back on the field. On 3rd down at the Nebraska 20 and 40 seconds to go, Fry hit Junior WR Cooper Vuong on a 17-yard gain. Then with 10 seconds remaining, Fry hit Vuong again in the back of the endzone to complete the upset.
2) 2005 - Colorado State @ CTU - 75-73 L (4OT)
In what was already a classic battle, the Toros and Rams battled to a 45-45 tie at the end of regulation. In OT, the teams traded touchdowns three times, until the 4th series. The Rams converted on their TD and 2-point conversion, forcing the Toros hand. Dennis Fry led the Toros into the end zone but on the 2 point conversion, Junior running D'Ondre Nichols was stuffed at the 1-yard line. In this high-powered football game the teams combined for over 1500 yards of offense. Dennis Fry alone threw for almost 650 yards and 6 TDs in the loss.
3) 2006 NOKIA Sugar Bowl - CTU vs South Carolina - 35-34 W
The SEC-champion Gamecocks came to play on this night as the Toros sat back and wallowed as the Gamecocks held the ball at the CTU 20 with under 2 minutes to go and a 6-point lead. Out trotted the South Carolina field goal unit. Somehow, Steve Spurrier's troops missed the field goal setting up an exciting finish. The Toros took the ball from behind their own 20 with 1 timeout and less than 2 minutes to play with. Several passes to All-American WR Dio McNeal later, the Toros found themselves with 1st and 10 at the Gamecocks 40 with 45 ticks left on the clock. McCoy tried to buy his time, but the stellar Gamecocks secondary held him off forcing a 4th down with 30 seconds remaining. McCoy stepped back in the pocket with all sorts of time, unfortunately, he had nothing open. But wait! McCoy fired a pass deep into double coverage, he threaded the needle right to little-used 4th WR freshman Ralph Sampson for the Touchdown and the win! The Gamecocks got the ball back but on their 2nd play of the possession, Senior DT Paul Brooks hit the QB Antonio Heffner hard and forced a fumble. Freshman DE Leroy Dodd was Johnny on the spot and scooped up the football. McCoy kneeled twice to clinch the victory and finish the best season in Toros history.
Now, in 2008, the Toros look to begin a new promising season. Wally McCoy was out in full force in the opening game of the year as he threw for 298 yards, 4 TDs with 1 pick while running for 96 yards on 21 carries and a TD. The Toros ended up crushing the Rams 55-31. How will the rest of the season go? Stay tuned to this post and find out.
