        THE TORO TIMES

        Week 6 in Review

TURNOVERS THE DIFFERENCE AS #23 CTU STUNS #4 OKLAHOMA
Toros pathetic D comes up big

Norman, OK (AP) - It was a rainy day in Norman and before the game both coaches knew that throwing the football might be a problem. Yet it was Bob Stoops' love of the pass which may have cost his team the game. Senior QB Rhett Bomar threw the ball 45 times while featured back Tashard Choice ran the ball just 10 times. Bomar was unable to complete much, finishing with just 21 completions on his 45 passes. Toros coach Jim Macklin took a different approach, throwing the ball just 29 times while pounding it out with big true freshman RB Roberto Scott who finished with a career high 38 carries for 113 yards.

The big leg of Sooners kicker Robert Gaffney got the home team on the board as he legged out a 43 yard FG. The Toros would respond as they pounded the ball methodically down the field setting up Roberto Scott's 2 yard plunge to give the Toros the lead. The second quarter started with the first of 4 Matt Sapp field goals on the night as the Toros extended their lead to 7. The Sooners would soon tie it up as Bomar hooked up with his main target Adam Gilbert who broke the tackle from Toros cornerback Rex McCray and busted out for a 54 yard TD play. The Toros would get the ball back once more in the half and had the ball with 1st and goal at the Sooners 3 with 30 seconds left and 2 timeouts, but the Toros tried to pound it in with Roberto Scott and fullback Chauncey Polk, to no avail as they were forced to settle for a Matt Sapp field goal as time expired in the half.

Another Matt Sapp field goal opened the scoring in the second half as the Toros climbed to a 6 point advantage. Rhett Bomar would drive the home squad all the way to the Bulls 2 yard line before hooking up with running back Tashard Choice giving the Sooners a 1 point edge. On the ensuing kickoff, senior returner Justin Malloy took the ball into Sooners territory. Wally McCoy then marched his troops into the 10 yard line for a 3rd down play. McCoy made one of several bad decisions on the night and threw the ball right into the hands of Sooners safety Tiger Lake who took the ball back to the Sooners 30 yard line. From there, Rhett Bomar would take his team to the 2 yard line again where a handoff to Tashard Choice would find paydirt and give the Sooners an 8 point cushion heading into the final quarter.

The teams traded punts before Wally McCoy was finally able to produce something on offense as he hit Justin Malloy for a 20 yard score bringing the Toros into a potential gametying situation. On the two point conversion, Wally McCoy called the option but was wrapped up before he could reach the endzone or option it to the running back. The Toros faced an uphill battle down 2 with under 5 minutes left against one of the top teams in the country. On a 2nd down play at their own 31 yard line, Sooners QB Rhett Bomar threw a strike intended for wide reciever Sandy Horner, but it was picked off by the true freshman cornerback Rex McCray. McCray saw nothing but green in front of him as he marched 40 yards down the field for his first career touchdown. Matt Sapp would add a late field goal to put the icing on the cake, but it was the clutch play of Rex McCray that demoralized the Sooners to the point of defeating them before the game was over. The Sooners now pick up their heads as they welcome the rival Texas Longhorns for the annual Red River Shootout. For the Toros, they host their first game since week 2 when the Nebraska Cornhuskers come to town in what is sure to be a high-scoring affair.

            THE TORO TIMES

            Week 7 in Review

Last play TD puts Toros over the top
Freshman RB runs for 3 TD's

Colorado Springs, CO (AP) - The Colorado Tech Toros and the Nebraska Cornhuskers were supposed to rack up yardage like nothing ever seen before, instead neither team got it going until the fourth quarter. The teams combined for 24 points in the first 3 quarters before combining for 35 points in the 4th quarter. The Toros powerful running attack was the difference. With 43 seconds remaining sophomore pivot Darryl Parker found Alex Walsh to give the Huskers a 28-24 lead. Wally McCoy then lead his troops down the field all the way to the one yard line. With 9 seconds left on the clock, freshman fullback Chauncey Polk bulled through for the winning score. It was the second meeting for the two Big 12 teams and for the second time, the Toros pulled out a victory in the final ten seconds. The Toros will get a chance to rest up with a bye in week 8 before hosting the Texas Longhorns in two weeks time.
