                    Re: Baltimore Ravens (Madden 2005)

Powerhouse Defenses face ultimate showdown in Jacksonville

JACKSONVILLE, FL-Neither of these recent champions were expected to reach this point.

But now two teams that put out two of the more recent dominant defenses to date several years ago face off in Super Bowl XXXIX in Jacksonville, Florida at ALLTEL Stadium.

First, let's start with the NFC Champion, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. They also won the NFC two years ago with one of the most opportunistic defenses of all time. In that year (the 2002 regular season), they allowed only 196 points, the fifth best all-time. They also led the league with 31 interceptions. They sent seven players to the Pro Bowl, five of which were from their stellar defense, Linebackers Derrick Brooks and Shelton Quarles, Defense Linemen Warren Sapp and Simeon Rice, and Defensive Back John Lynch.

This year the Buccaneers rank #1 in pass defense at 147 YPG, and #4 in total defense at 259 YPG. They're also 4th in points allowed per game at 18.2. Their 53 sacks rank 6th in the league. Derrick Brooks is a Pro Bowl snub this year, with 135 tackles, 8 sacks, 2 interceptions, 2 forced fumbles and a fumble recovery. Ian Gold is going to the Pro Bowl with 131 tackles, 10 sacks, 4 interceptions, 4 forced fumbles, 2 fumble recoveries and a defensive TD. Shelton Quarles also goes to Hawaii with 124 tackles, 5 sacks, a pick and 3 forced fumbles. Defensive Tackle Anthony McFarland also goes with 86 tackles, 13 sacks, 2 forced fumbles and 3 recoveries. Simeon Rice had an injury plagued season, registering only 3 sacks, but he is still very dangerous.

On the other side, the 2004 Ravens' defense has amazingly beaten some of the records their 2000 counterparts did. The 2000 Ravens allowed 165 points (10.3 per game) and 970 rushing yards (60.6 per game). This year's version broke those records with only 150 points allowed (9.4 per game) and 777 rushing yards allowed (48.6 per game). Their pass defense is excellent as well, at 171 YPG, 7th overall. Combined, their defense allowed only 220 YPG, easily #1 overall. They rank only 24th in sacks with 40, but #1 in interceptions with 28. The 2000 Ravens sent Defensive Lineman Sam Adams, Linebacker Ray Lewis, and Defensive Back Rod Woodson to the Pro Bowl, along with Offensive Tackle Jon Ogden. This year, Ogden returns, along with line mate Orlando Brown, who paved the way for Pro Bowl RB Jamal Lewis' 2000 yard season. On the Defense, Ray Lewis returns for the 5th time after leading the NFL with 151 tackles (he also added 5 sacks, 5 picks and a defensive TD). Cornerback Deion Sanders also goes for the 10th time, with 5 interceptions and 2 TDs. Defensive Linemen Marques Douglas and Anthony Weaver surprisingly go as well, both first time selections. Douglas had 11 sacks, and Weaver had 9. Third-year Strong Safety Ed Reed goes for the 2nd straight year with 50 tackles, 8 interceptions, 2 recovered fumbles and 2 touchdowns.

These teams have big-name players on their defenses, and it is sure to be a defensive classic in Jacksonville.
