Magic Sting Hornets in a 6 Point Victory

Steve Francis led all scorers with his 26 point effort and 7 assists en route to a 97-91 win over Baron Davis and New Orleans Hornets. The game was hyped up to be playmaker against playmaker; Francis and Davis; big dunkers going at it.

Player of the Game: G, Steve Francis
        Stat Line: 26PTS, 7AST

However, the result was the opposite. Davis struggled, shooting 8 of 20 for 16 points. Though he did have help from the big guys in Mashburn, Brown, and Magloire, but it just wasn't enough to compensate for Davis' struggles.

Jamal Mashburn led his team with 19 and 4 boards. P.J. Brown scored 18 with 15 rebounds and 6 assists and Jamaal Magloire had 17 points with his game high, 17 rebounds.

But you have to have more than that to stop the Orlando Magic. The Magic outplayed the Hornets offensively, hitting 51% of their shots and assiting 35, compared to New Orleans' 43% and 25 assists.

Grant Hill, striving to make a comeback, had 20 points, 7 boards, and 5 blocks for a great defensive night. Dwight Howard also had 5 blocks with his 10 points and 9 rebounds.

Jameer Nelson played in limited action, but managed to score 10, assist 6, and steal the ball 3 times. The reason for his little playing time was because of Doug Christie. Christie was on fire offensively and defensively. He forced Baron Davis to take poor shots and on offense, he had 10 assists. He also had 6 points and rebounds.

With the win, Orlando improves to 2-0, facing the expansion team, Charlotte Bobcats, next.

This game pitted number 1 overall pick, Dwight Howard, against number 2 overall pick, Emeka Okafor... Howard came up victorious.

Howard went off on the Okafor led Bobcats, scoring 14, rebounding 9, assisting 6, stealing 5, and blocking 4; just 1 block shy of a 5 by 5- something not everyone can say, and Howard is a rookie, none-the-less.

However, Howard was outshined by fellow rookie, Jameer Nelson. Nelson scored a game high, 27, and assisted 12 to earn Player of the Game honors.

Of course, he did have help from three others in Steve Francis, Grant Hill, and Doug Christie.

Both Francis and Hill came up big during the fourth, sparking a 24-2 run, and both ended up with 17 points each. Hill added 7 boards and 5 steals to his stat line. While Francis added 7 dimes. Doug Christie came off the bench for 18 points and defensive help.

For the Bobcats, the savvy old veteran, Steve Smith scored a team high, 19 points. Melvin Ely had 14 points and 12 rebounds, and Kareem Rush finished with 10 and 5 respectively.

The Magic will play the Dallas Mavericks for their first "real" challenge of the season on Tuesday, November 9th.

                Dwight Howard out 4 days

                Sunday; November 7
                Orlando, FL

The Orlando Magic organization has announced that forward, Dwight Howard, will be out at least 4 days with the flu. "He was very pale and weak," said Coach Johnny Davis at practice, "He didn't look to good."

With this, Howard has been put on injured reserve, and the Magic have activated forward, Brandon Hunter.

Tony Battie will start in his place until Howard is well.

                    Mavs Rout Magic in Blowout

Dirk Nowitzki led the way for the Dallas Mavericks, as the team blew out the Magic in Orlando. Nowitzki poured in 34 points and boarded 12, on his 17 of 20 field goal night.

                    Stat Line: 34PTS, 12REB, 17/20FG

"He's too good for us," said rookie, Jameer Nelson, "He's a big guy with the midrange game - too much for us to handle."

However, he wasn't alone. Jason Terry dropped in 28 with his 9 dimes and Michael Finley had 16 on 8 of 11 shooting.

"They're a great team," said Magic Coach, Johnny Davis, "A great offense with superstars."

Marqis Daniels had 16 and Erick Dampier scored 14.

For the Magic, the stats were filled with low ones. Just four players scored in double digits, and only 3 were starters. Steve Francis scored 27 with 5 steals and 4 assists. Grant Hill had 17 points an 5 boards.

"Our team struggled," Steve Francis said, "Offensivley and defensively. You can't win your team struggles."

Pat Garrity came off the bench with 12 points on 4 threes, but it was far from enough for the victory.

                    Current Record: 3-1

Magic Defenseless in Loss to Wizards

Allowing just 32 first half points is tremendous, but you have to be consistent in defense, which the Magic weren't. Orlando allowed 59 second half points and couldn't put in more than 38, giving the victory to Gilbert Arenas and Co.

Arenas led the way with his 35 points and 10 assists, earning Player of the Game honors.

The NBA season is just 5 games young, yet Orlando has already made a trade. The Magic have sent 6'11" center, Tony Battie, to the Golden State Warriors for forward, Eduardo Najera.

                            Golden State Gets:

                            F, Eduardo Najera

                            C, Tony Battie

Both have played in minimal roles for their former teams, but Orlando needed a rebounder and Golden State needs an expiring contract in their rebuilding process. Although Battie's contract still has two years left, it is two years younger than Najera's contract who has 4 left.

Najera, playing in his fifth year, can play both forward positions and guard the smaller centers.

Pending a phyiscal, Najera is eligible to play in Orlando's next game, which is against the Los Angeles Lakers. However, the chances are slim, as he has been not be able to practice with the team.
