Rays Welcome 2 New Ball Players After Two Trades

                              Tuesday; April 19, 2004
                              Tampa Bay, FL

With 5, somewhat successful series under Tampa Bay's belt, the Devil Rays sent four players packing and welcome two new players in trades with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and the New York Mets.

The first sends a disgruntled pitcher, Jorge Sosa, and third baseman, Alex Gonzalez to the Angels for an unhappy second baseman, Chone Figgins.

Sosa was unhappy with his contract and struggling to find playing time after dismal performances in three apperances. He has posted a 0-2 record with an 18.00 ERA. Sosa will be used mainly as a reliever in the bullpen.

Gonzalez is hitting poorly - a huge liability offensively. He will come off the bench for the Angels and does fairly well on defense.

Tampa Bay receives a very good contact hitter in Figgins who is also very versatile.

The second trade with the Mets sends first baseman, Josh Phelps and AAA pitcher, Denny Neagle to the Mets and in return, the Devil Rays get outfielder, Mike Cameron.

Phelps, a 26 year old with a bright future, will come off the bench until the Mets skipper decides to start him over Andres Galarraga. Phelps hit a sub par, .120 average with just 3 RBI's.

The deal is pretty much a bad contract for bad contract. Neagle is earning 10.2 million this year and is in the last year of his contract. Cameron earns 6.5 million with 2 years on his contract. The Mets were discussing a buy out of the injury prone 32 year old.

Although Phelps', Neagle's, and Gonzalez's presence in Tampa Bay were short lived, having been signed in the recent off-season, the team's outlook looks bright and ready for a successful season.

In other news, pitcher, Jimmy Haynes from AAA ball, has been called up to play for the Devil Rays. Also, first baseman, Travis Lee, has been benched for the time being.

The Front Office did not release their batting order, however they did announce that their starting lineup will be as follows:

                              1B, Aubrey Huff
                              2B, Roberto Alomar
                              SS, Julio Lugo
                              3B, Chone Figgins
                              RF, Danny Bautista
                              CF, Mike Cameron
                              LF, Carl Crawford
                              DH, Fred McGriff

Both Figgins and Cameron will not make their debut in their series opener against the Rangers, but will play in the second and final game of that series.
