    ESPNews.com Breaking News Report

PATRIOTS MOVE FOR BIG NAME RUNNING BACK
    Tim Graham Reports

It's official. The rumors had been that Bill Belichick and the Patriots needed a big name running back to make a push for a Super Bowl. After talks throughout the league, wasting a first round draft pick on a dud of a back, and taking chances with average players such as Michael Bush, the Patriots needed something big. That something big comes by the name Stewart, Jonathan Stewart. The same Jonathan Stewart that plays with the Carolina Panthers. After discussions opened, it was reported that Carolina was requesting at least a first and third for the back who had begun to not see as many snaps as he did in 2009. Instead, the Patriots worked out a deal that sent a first and fourth round pick along with young receiver Julian Edelman to the Panthers for Stewart.

Unfortunately, no one was available from either organization to comment on the trade. But a quick phone interview with Patriots owner Bob Kraft said the deal was done, pending a physical.

    Official Trade
    Patriots Receive

HB Jonathan Stewart [90 OVR, A POT, 24 Years Old]

    Panthers Receive
    2012 Round One Draft Pick
    2012 Round Four Draft Pick
WR Julian Edleman [82 OVR, B POT, 25 Years Old]

    Gamer's Note
    | The second blockbuster. With the way Madden does the two back setup, one never seems to get enough snaps. Stewart would inevitably fall into nothing sitting there. This way he goes to a huge team, big names around him, etc... I thought about moving Williams instead, due to age, but figured he was more of the established back, thus Stewart may be a better choice.

Titans Outscore Opponents 84-24, Improve to 6-1
      Paul Kuharsky Reports

No Vince Young? No problem. Dennis Dixon has thrown seven touchdowns to just two interceptions over the last two games [three weeks] as the Titans improve to 6-1 on the season after dismantling the Miami Dolphins, 49-24, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 35-0. Although Dixon has looked shaky at times, he hasn't been stirred yet now that he's started three games with the Titans after the shocking Vince Young trade. "I've just gone out there and done what I've needed to do. We're winning games, we're playing well. I'm just happy to be a part of it," said Dixon in a post-game press conference after the Buccaneers game. Dixon's favorite target? Number 18 Kenny Britt. Britt is quickly emerging as one of the top tier receivers in the league and over the last two weeks has five touchdowns on just thirteen receptions and over 250 yards receiving. He leads the league in touchdowns [eight], average yards per catch [20.6], and is fifth in yards [599].

Defensively, the Titans have come alive as well. Gerald McRath is coming alive and proving to be a leader being all over the field racking up interceptions, tackles, forced fumbles, and fumble recoveries. The defensive line is peaking at just the right time as well and this team, at 6-1, is looking to be one of the top teams to look at come playoff time. They face a tough test as the second half of the season starts when they host the 5-2 Houston Texans, whom they topped in a shootout, 42-35, roughly a month ago. The big positive though, Justin Tuck is back after his injury and the Titans are healthy. We'll see how this run continues and if the Titans can keep it alive.

                    Titans Midseason Review
                    Jim Wyatt Reporting
                    Record
                    6-1, 1st Place AFC South

                    Review
Overall, it’s been a solid season for the Titans so far, despite injuries on both sides of the ball and a change in quarterback. Vince Young has been replaced by Dennis Dixon, and Dixon has looked solid thus far. Chris Johnson is looking like his usual self with six 100 yard games out of the seven so far. The defense is seeming to gel better every week and with Justin Tuck due back next week against the Houston Texans, they appear to be ready to go even more.

                    Surprises
Kenny Britt. Yes, he’s expected to be a number one target and the top guy, but Britt has excelled so far this season. He leads the league in touchdowns with eight, is fifth in yards with 599, and his 20.6 yards per reception is the league lead as well. He’s done all of this while changing quarterbacks part way through the season. Defensively, the ‘high five’ goes to Tony Brown on the defensive line. Brown has looked exception this season in his contract year. He has sixteen tackles, ten for a loss and five sacks already. He’s on pace to top all of his previous bests except the fifty-two tackles he got in both 2007 and 2008. Brown appears to be well on his way to securing a big contract in the off-season.

                    Disappointments
Obviously one would love to put recently acquired Justin Tuck here as he is yet to play a snap in the regular season. However, injuries happen. Another one would be quarterback Vince Young, but that has been taken care of and, essentially, is no longer a concern of the organization. At this point, the biggest disappointment may be the play of cornerback Ken Lucas. Although he has gotten two interceptions in the last three games, Lucas has give up a number of big plays, including Jaguars rookie Clifton Jones that racked up over 170 yards receiving against Lucas early in the season. Brought in for veteran leadership, Lucas is proving to not be as good as advertised and could be a concern for the Titans at season’s end.

                    Expectations
The Titans may be disappointed in they finish the season without a first round bye. The Patriots are getting better and may end up clinching home-field advantage, however, the Titans should be expected to finish well, but not as good as they started. Expect a 13-3 season, first round bye, and a deep playoff run for the Titans this year.

                      Jim Wyatt, The Tennessean

Titans Improve to 9-2, Eye Division Win
The Tennessee Titans are peaking at the right time and appear to be one of the toughest teams to beat this year. Despite a disheartening loss, 24-0, to division rival the Jacksonville Jaguars three weeks ago, the Titans rebounded with a dominating win against the Cleveland Browns and a well-earned victory at home against the Chargers of San Diego. Dennis Dixon is definitely showing he does have a slight downside after throwing three interceptions in the Jaguars loss and struggling in the Chargers game as well. Chris Johnson seems happy to carry the load, with his fourth three [or more] touchdown game of the season. Johnson, through eleven games, has 1,593 yards on the season and is on tap for his second 2,300 yard season in as many years. One of the craziest parts, Johnson is averaging a career high 9.0 yards per carry as he's only carried the ball 177 times so far on the season, averaging roughly sixteen receptions a game.

Defensively, the Titans are looking solid. In the Browns domination, linebacker Gerald McRath had six tackles, two interceptions, a safety, and a touchdown on an interception return, work enough to give him NFL Defensive Player of the Week honors. Cortland Finnegan has come alive as of late with three of his five interceptions in the last four games. Stephen Tulloch, the Titans leader in tackles, had a season high eight in the win against the Chargers last week. It's essentially true, the Titans are peaking at the right time.

Titans Looking at Next Two Games Closely
Head coach Jeff Fisher feels the next two weeks could be a crucial part of the upcoming post-season. In back to back weeks, the Titans travel to New Orleans to take on the 7-3-1 Saints and then travel back home to take on the 7-4 Baltimore Ravens, who are in the AFC North lead and just two games behind the Titans for potential first round byes. "These are two huge games for us. You're looking at a Saints team that's just playing great football right now and then you have the Ravens. Regardless, they always play us hard, top that with the fact that they're playing very well right now, and you've got a hell of a game," said Fisher. Following those two games, the Titans close the season against teams with a combined record of 16-16-1. These games could be the difference maker.

Pierre Thomas and Drew Brees picked apart the Titans defense en route to their eighth win of the season, winning 24-12.

                        It was over when...
With less than three minutes left, LaGarrette Blount was snubbed on his two-point conversion attempt, keeping the Saints lead at twelve. On the ensuing onside kick attempt, tight end Jeremy Shockey recovered it. The Titans would never recover.

                        Game ball
Saints running back Pierre Thomas. Thomas was the workhorse that kept the Saints ahead all game. He ran the ball twenty-six times for 117 yards with a score and caught five more balls for twenty-three yards in the win.

                        Noteworthy
Titans cornerback Cortland Finnegan left the game early in the second quarter with an apparent neck or shoulder injury. It was later determined to be a broken collarbone which could potentially sideline the star for the remainder of the season and post-season.

                        Up Next
The Titans travel home to host the Baltimore Ravens who stand at 8-4 on the season. The winner of this game stands a great chance to head into the playoffs with a first round bye. The Titans are just a game ahead of the 8-4 Houston Texans for AFC South Championship. The Saints travel to Florida to take on the 4-8 Jacksonville Jaguars working to extended the one game advantage they have in the NFC South over the Atlanta Falcons.

                          It was over when...
Kenny Britt broke a tackle with 8:11 left in the game and bolted for a seventy yard touchdown giving the Titans a 28-7 lead. Despite being down by two scores, the Ravens were in control of the entire third quarter after Tye Hill took the opening kick off ninety-three yards to give the Titans that advantage of two scores. After Britt's score, the Ravens had no answer and couldn't muster anything more than a single touchdown.

The aforementioned Britt. Britt caught seven passes for 152 yards and two touchdowns.

                          Noteworthy
Dennis Dixon continued to show he seems to have two sides to his season by throwing four interceptions and completing just forty-five percent of his passes. Chris Johnson ran for 141 yards at an impressive 8.8 yards per carry, bringing his total this year to 1,795 on the season, and his third straight 2,000 yard season nearly a guarantee.

The Titans stay home and hope to clinch a playoff spot as they host the 8-5 Atlanta Falcons who are still trying to catch the New Orleans Saints who sit at 9-3-1. The Ravens head out west to take on the 4-9 San Francisco 49ers as they still vie for the AFC North title.

I have a question btw.. why did you trade Vince Young? at the time I think you were at 3-1? and the season is turning out great so far..

he just wasn't your style or..?

cuz 3-1 aint really a bad record and from the looks of it Vince probably could've done the same as Dixon, maybe

You know, it's kind of hard. Essentially, I had no intention of retaining Young at season's end unless he performed exceptionally well. He wasn't doing good and with a guy like Dixon, who is essentially the same player, I thought about trading. With the way this Madden is, I rarely look at overalls when I'm playing, I tend to look at potential. Both Young and Dixon are B potential, and although Dixon is a 68 and VY is a 82, they're pretty much the same guy to me.

So I thought about trading at the beginning of the season and put him on a 4 game trial period. If he performed great, he'd stay and still probably get cut. He didn't really live up to what I had hoped, so I started looking. Granted, I know it's not 100% realistic, and I highly doubt the Titans would ever do it, but let's just call it my little touch. The more I think about it, the more I kind of think I should of given up more, but that could be because Young struggled early, but as he starts to improve (since week 11 he's thrown 5 tds to 4 ints and over 1000 yards) so, I think it might be okay.

As we nearly complete the season, I've been fairly impressed with Dixon overall, but his consistency is questionable. I'm going to the playoffs, beat the Falcons in a thriller [update tomorrow], so he'll be put up to the biggest test, the playoffs, right off. Going into the off-season if a rookie or free agent "trips my trigger" then I might take them, but if, and only if, it doesn't interfere with another key need, such as a cornerback and maybe guard to take over Scott's job soon.

Long winded, but does that answer you question enough?

Rookie safety and special teamer Lorenzo Somerville forced a fumble on the opening kick off of the second half that reserve tight end Jared Cook Jr. picked up and rumbled nineteen yards for a touchdown and the Titans edged the Atlanta Falcons, 16-9 on Sunday.

                                It was over when...
Rookie Nick McCaskill's [in for an injured Matt Ryan] deep pass on 4th and ten fell incomplete with less than a minute left. Without any timeouts, the Falcons were helpless as Titans quarterback Dennis Dixon did two kneel downs to secure the Titans eleventh win of the season.

Essentially, it was the entire Titans defense. They hounded Matt Ryan all day causing him to leave the game with a shoulder injury in the third quarter. They picked him off twice, netted a pair of sacks [both by defensive tackle Tony Brown] and held high powered running back Michael Turner to just eighty-four yards rushing. Well done defense, well done.

                                Noteworthy
Chris Johnson was held to just eighty-one yards rushing in the contest, bringing his season total to 1,876 yards. Another 2,000 yard season is imminent, however, another 2,300 yard season is not. Johnson is reported to be the front runner for MVP honors this season, but should the back slack off a bit in these two remaining weeks, he may be snubbed once again. --- Michael Turner was held to just eighty-four yards but still has a commanding advantage over Vikings Adrian Peterson for second in the rushing title. Turner is just two yards shy of 1,500 on the season while Peterson has just 1,270 with two games to go.

The Titans travel to Pittsburgh to take on the 8-6 Steelers who are trying to keep their playoffs hopes alive. The Steelers and Ravens are locked in a three way tie with the Cincinnati Bengals for the AFC North title. The Falcons host the NFC North winning Minnesota Vikings who are 11-3 on the season. With a win last week the Vikings locked up the NFC North title and with a win and Rams loss, could lock up a first round bye as well.
