I really like the youth on Detroit's roster, but I'm not sure if there's as much storyline potential surrounding them, other than the whole Cinderella contender aspect. Plus it seems like they're already on the upswing under current leadership. They're one of my top 3 choices though for sure, tough decision.
First off, thanks for the plug.

Secondly, I agree that management seems to be going in the right direction, but you could always storyline the years of bottom dwelling finally coming to an end. I'm a big Jim Schwartz fan, so I'd just love to see it.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- The honeymoon is over. After a surprising 2011 season in which the Buffalo Bills made it to the AFC championship game, they are struggling to regain form. Granted, Sunday night they faced the defending Super Bowl champions, but Bills fans who had high hopes coming into this season are likely left disappointed at their team's 0-2 start.

It was all Jets from the very beginning. On Buffalo's second play from scrimmage, Antonio Cromartie picked off an errant pass from Matt Leinart that the blitz forced him to throw prematurely. It would be all downhill from there after two Shonn Greene scores put Buffalo in a 14-0 hole. Fortunately for the Bills, two missed field goals by the Jets kept the Buffalo offense in good starting field position. eventually resulting in a 34-yard touchdown pass to Fred Jackson. Throughout the first half the Jets defense, specifically linebacker Calvin Pace, gave Matt Leinart fits, with three total interceptions (two by Pace) and multiple sacks. Pace added 5 tackles and 2 sacks to his interception total despite injuring his shoulder with 30 seconds left in the second quarter and missing the rest of the game.

In the second half, Buffalo's defense improved and Dick LeBeau decided to give Brian Brohm a shot at quarterback to see if he'd yield better results. Although he threw no interceptions, passing success was hard to come by as his 44.8% completion rate indicates. He did connect with Lee Evans for a 23-yard score late in the 4th quarter but it appeared to be too little, too late.

However, on the next drive, Greene broke off a long run for a would-be first down but got stripped by Leodis McKelvin. The ball was recovered by Jairus Byrd at Buffalo's own 44 with 52 seconds left in regulation. After progressing the ball to the New York 22-yard line, Brohm missed on consecutive passes to Torri Bonner and Darren McFadden. With 0:02 left on the clock, the Bills had one last chance but rookie tackle Quentin Copeland beat guard Andy Levitre and hit Brohm as he threw it to force an incompletion to end the game.

"It's always tough to start a season down 0-2, especially when both losses are to division rivals. It's a long season, though, and we're a good team; we'll bounce back," said LeBeau. The Bills will try to exact revenge against the 2-0 New England Patriots next Monday night in Foxboro.

Steve Young: The Patriots are looking like they haven't skipped a beat with Welker out, whereas the Bills are struggling. New England takes this decisively.
Keyshawn Johnson: Until the Bills can get consistent quarterback play, they don't have a chance in this one.
Tom Jackson: I'm going to have to agree with you guys. I think the Bills will get back on track and have a solid season, but that rebound won't start this week.
Cris Carter: This Buffalo defense was great at making big plays and shifting momentum last season, but Tom Brady is better at preventing that.
Chris Berman: Tom "Here's a Story of a Man Named" Brady should be up to his usual tricks tonight, Patriots go up 3-0.

          Week 3 | Quick Look
          28TELFORD'S TAKE
"A loss like that is hard to stomach. We played a hell of a game for 59 minutes, it's a shame we let it slip away like that. We need to get on the right track, ASAP."
          32
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- After a week 1 loss to the Patriots, the Bills looked to exact revenge on the road Monday night. For 59 minutes and 19 seconds of regulation, it looked like they were going to pull it off. Unfortunately for them, Tom Brady and Devin McCourty were determined to spoil it.

The Bills got off to a good start in the first half, with a rare rushing touchdown for Matt Leinart and a 62-yard score on blown coverage for Torri Bonner, they jumped out to an early 14-3 lead. The Patriots, being the Patriots, bounced back thanks to the legs of Stephen Gostkowski and Cedric Benson, bringing the halftime score to 14-13 Buffalo.

Edelman was carted off the field with a minute left in the third quarter after suffering a leg injury
New England would tie the game up midway through the third quarter on a leaping grab by Randy Moss. With 1:01 left in the third quarter, however, the Patriots receiving corps was dealt another costly blow as Julian Edelman, who had already grabbed 10 catches for 99 yards, went down with an undisclosed injury to his left leg.

In the fourth quarter, the Bills battled back adding a rushing touchdown for Fred Jackson and then two Mason Crosby field goals to give them a seemingly comfortable 9 point lead with 2:07 remaining. Then classic Brady took over and marched downfield, punctuating the drive with a strike to 2nd year tight end Paul Garrett for a 22-yard touchdown. The Patriots kicked it onside on the ensuing kickoff, and McCourty dove on the loose ball just passed the 40 yard line. One play later, rookie halfback Isaiah DeVitto came down with a hail mary pass just over the top of Zack Bowman and Tyrell Morrison for a 60 yard go-ahead score.

With 27 seconds left and 75 yards to go, the Bills attempted to pull off the now inevitable victory, but it only resulted in an interception securing the victory for New England. The Bills look to break out of their 0-3 slump next week against the winless Dolphins.

            Fall From Grace
The Bills have gotten off to a rocky 0-3 start with losses to division rivals

A disappointed LeBeau spoke to the press Tuesday
After an 11-5 2011-12 season resulted in a trip to the AFC Championship Game, it's understandable that fans and Bills personnel would have high expectations coming into this season. Sadly, those expectations are now likely tempered thanks to their 0-3 start.

"It's disappointing, to say the least. We've been right there in every game, despite crucial mistakes, but we just haven't been able to pull out a victory yet," head coach Dick LeBeau told the media this morning. "Sooner or later, we're going to start capitalizing on these opportunities to win close games. We have a solid football team, and I think some people might look at the record and forget the fact we started the season off against 2 of the best teams in the NFL."

Outspoken wide receiver Antonio Bryant had some choice words for members of the media as well. "Stupid mistakes. That's what it is. Interceptions, blown coverage, dropped passes," he said. "If we cut down those, we'll start winning games. It's that simple."

Whatever the cause for their losses may be, the Bills have a good chance for retribution this Sunday as they face the Miami Dolphins. If you remember, the Dolphins pulled off a surprising overtime in the final game of the regular season last year and the Bills will surely be seeking revenge on their home field. One thing is for sure, if they don't start winning soon it is only a matter of time before the fans start wanting to see what #1 overall draft pick Erik Patterson can do at quarterback.

Dan Marino: The Dolphins are fresh off a bye week, and this Bills team keeps making mistakes to force losses. I think Miami takes advantage of that.
Boomer Esiason: Gee, I'm sure Dan's not biased. This Miami offense might be the only unit worse than Buffalo right now. The Bills are going to be looking to make a statement in this one.
Bill Cowher: I have to agree with Boomer, this Bills team is far more talented than they've shown thus far. I think we see our first glimpse of last seasons success today.
Shannon Sharpe: This Buffalo defense has been prone to giving up the big play so far, and this Miami offense specializes in making things happen with [Brandon] Marshall and [Ronnie] Brown.
James Brown: I don't know, I think this Buffalo squad is going to come out swinging. They've gotta be motivated after that tough loss last week, I think they pull out the victory.

Quick question about Posluszny--when you say doubtful, all of that stuff, is he healed this week but you're deciding to keep him out till next week? As far as I've seen there has never been something like that in Madden, so I was just wondering how you handled it, as it adds a lot more realism.

It's just me putting my own little twist on him being out for 1 more week lol. Although I have been toying with the idea of holding people out/giving them limited action as well

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. -- The Buffalo defense allowed 416 total yards, their offense gained a mere 139, and yet they won... by 25? It was anything but your average day at the stadium, as the Bills offense could only muster one touchdown. Their special teams unit, on the other hand, contributed three scores and their defense even got in on the fun with a touchdown of their own.

                    TD: 2
The fun got started early as Roscoe Parrish took the opening kickoff 93 yards to give the Bills an early lead. The Dolphins quickly answered back as they marched down the field and punctuated the drive with a Nick Wynn score out of the wildcat formation. After an exchange of field goals, Terrence McGee would return a Chad Henne interception 92 yards late in the 2nd quarter to give the Bills a 17-10 lead heading into the locker room.

The game seemed to be nothing out of the ordinary, as a Dan Carpenter field goal would be the lone addition to the scoreboard in the third quarter. The first play of the fourth quarter, a 33-yard touchdown scamper by Darren McFadden, is when things started to unravel for the Dolphins. Second-year defensive end Deontae Knight hit Henne in the backfield and caused a fumble recovered by Dwan Edwards at the Miami 15 yard-line, although the Bills would be held to a 34-yard field goal from Mason Crosby.

McFadden celebrates a touchdown run in the 4th quarter to give the Bills a 24-13 lead
The next blow to the Dolphins chances at a comeback would immediately follow a 50-yard field goal from Carpenter, bringing them within 11 points. On the ensuing kickoff, Parrish had a repeat performance of the opening kick, taking another return to the house. Buffalo's special teams unit was not done yet, however. On the next kickoff, rookie safety Tyrell Morrison delivered a hard hit on Miami's rookie returner Antoine Barnes, forcing a fumble that he recovered and returned for yet another touchdown, giving the Bills a 25-point advantage.

"It's comforting to know that in games where our offense is struggling, we've got the talent in other areas to make the big plays that keep us in games and winning," said coach Dick LeBeau. "We can't rely on that every week, though. We need to get our offense playing consistent."

It is unclear if Brian Brohm, who got the start at quarterback in place of Matt Leinart after a three interception performance against New England, will get another chance at the job or be cast back into the second string role against Indianapolis. Brohm completed a measly 33% (6-of-18) of his passes, gaining only 57 yards and adding an interception. Another negative side to the victory involves oft-injured linebacker Thomas Howard, who was carted off the field in the third quarter with broken ribs and is expected to miss at least three weeks.

The Bills hope to add on to their first victory of the season by defeating the undefeated (3-0) Indianapolis Colts next Sunday. It will be interesting to see who Buffalo starts at quarterback, and there are rumors surrounding the team that indicate Fred Jackson may not be the starter at halfback due to the slow start he's gotten off to thus far.

                      Allred

BUFFALO, NY -- Following news that outside linebacker Thomas Howard would miss at least the next 2 games, the Buffalo Bills added more depth at the position by signing Colin Allred. The terms of the deal are believed to be a one-year contract worth $1.02M, with 650,000 of that guaranteed.

Allred did not play an NFL down during the 2011 season but spent 2010 with the Titans and totaled 82 tackles, 4 sacks, 1 interception, and 1 forced fumble. Rookie Jermaine Danby is slated to start and likely to see a majority of the playing time, but the Bills could use the boost in depth considering Paul Posluszny is expected to return from injury this week and see his first game action of the season.

                      Bills notes
With veteran halfback Fred Jackson getting off to a slow start, the coaching staff has announced that Darren McFadden will get the start this Sunday against the Indianapolis Colts. McFadden carried the ball 9 times last week and gained 40 yards including a 33-yard touchdown run. We imagine, though, that Jackson and McFadden will split the carries fairly evenly, depending on who has the hot hand.

Dan Marino: The Colts are rolling and the Bills needed so many things to go in their favor to win last week, Indy won't let that happen.
Boomer Esiason: I have to agree with you, Dan, this Buffalo offense looks awful so far this season. And their defense looks to be really missing Marcus Stroud.
Bill Cowher: Upset special! Posluszny is back, he'll be a huge boost to this defense, and I think McFadden is going to show out.
Shannon Sharpe: Come on man, Indianapolis is out for revenge after that upset in the playoffs. They're on a mission so far this season.
James Brown: It's hard to bet against Peyton Manning, especially against a team as inconsistent as Buffalo is, especially on defense.

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. -- The Bills went into Sunday's game against the Colts as heavy underdogs. The previous week, they had earned their first victory against the lowly Dolphins largely because of spectacular special teams play. They surely didn't have much of a chance to top the Colts, right?

After being benched in week 4, Matt Leinart had his best performance of the season against Indianapolis. He was efficient, protected the football, and made a couple big plays when the coverage allowed. Here are Leinart's season numbers from under center compared with his totals from this Sunday's game.

Much like in last season's divisional playoff matchup, the Bills were able to beat the odds against Peyton Manning and the undefeated Colts. Granted, they again got support from their special teams unit (2 scores) but their offense was able to move the ball and score effectively as well.

The game was neck-and-neck throughout the first half, with a Sammie Stroughter fumble holding Indianapolis to a short field goal for the first score of the game. It was 3-3 until the two-minute warning, but on the first play after the break, Kelvin Hayden got to quarterback Matt Leinart and forced a fumble. Dwight Freeney picked up the loose ball and ran it 37 yards to give the Colts a 7-point lead. After a quick Buffalo punt, Manning the Colts got the ball back. An incredible catch at the 7-yard line by Pierre Garçon set up another Adam Vinatieri field goal.

Immediately following the field goal, however, Roscoe Parrish struck again for the 3rd time in 2 weeks with a kick return for a touchdown. The Colts would manage to add 3 more points before the half, to go to the locker room with a 6-point advantage.

After trading touchdowns in the 3rd quarter, the Bills took over entirely in the 4th quarter. One-minute into the quarter, Leinart would deliver a deep pass as he was hit to connect with Darren McFadden for a 64-yard score. On the ensuing kick-off, rookie safety Tyrell Morrison would force a fumble on the return that was picked up by Bruce Johnson and ran in for a score.

On their next drive, McFadden would add a long rushing score to his impressive day, with a 78-yard scamper to the end zone. After a Mason Crosby field goal just inside the final two minutes, the Colts would attempt to rally back quickly. They were able to add another score on a pass to former Buffalo tight end Shawn Nelson, but would ultimately fall short with 30 seconds left and an 11-point deficit to conquer.

"We handled business today," said Bills coach Dick LeBeau. "We still had some of those game-changing, big plays but our offense was able to move the ball and our defense limited the damage. It could have been a lot worse for us going up against Manning."

The Bills take on the Bengals next week for their third consecutive home game. Linebacker Logan Ellis is likely to return from injury, and it looks like Leinart and McFadden may have secured their starting spots. Cincinnati is 3-2 after defeating the Texans this weekend and will be a tough task as they have the #1 ranked pass defense in the league.

Dan Marino: This is a passing league these days, it's simple. Best pass defense vs an inconsistent offense, top 10 quarterback passing team vs worst pass defense.
Boomer Esiason: Yeah, this Bills team, although exciting to watch, has skated by off a few game-changing plays on special teams the last two weeks. That sort of thing won't keep happening every game.
Bill Cowher: Run DMC is going to gash that 31st-ranked run defense and make it so the Bills don't even have to worry about Leinart throwing against the top ranked secondary. Bills move to 3-3.
Shannon Sharpe: I think Boomer has a point, until I see these Bills win a game by simply outplaying their opponent in all aspects it's tough to pick them, especially against a hot Bengals team.
James Brown: The Bills are a big play team, and I think there will be plenty of opportunity for that in this game. They've got good momentum coming into this game.

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. -- Fresh off a victory against the previously undefeated Colts, the Bills looked to string together their third straight victory against the Bengals. They earned the win, but that didn't seem to be enough for coach Dick LeBeau. "A win is a win, but that sure was an ugly way to go about it," he told reporters after the game. "Missed tackles, blown coverage, dropped passes - we've got a lot to work on in practice this week."

                              Running of the Bills
With an inconsistent passing attack, the Bills often need to lean on their run game to keep their offense moving the football. Through the first 3 games of the season, Darren McFadden didn't have a single carry and the rest of the team mustered only 2.6 yards per carry.

After a 9 carry, 40 yard performance in week 4, McFadden appeared to secure the job for good and followed it up with totals of 106 and 138 yards in weeks 5 and 6. Here is how the Buffalo rushing stats shake out for the first 6 games of the season.

These sorts of mistakes seemed to be a recurring theme throughout the game for both teams, as 5 out of 6 touchdowns were on plays of at least 49 yards. An uncharacteristic poor coverage display from Leodis McKelvin got the action started in the first quarter, as Chad Ochocinco was able to beat him deep for a score, and topped it off with an Irish jig.

The second quarter went back and forth, with runs of 50 yards by Darren McFadden and 80 yards by Bernard Scott bringing the game to a 17-7 Cincinnati advantage at the two minute warning. On the first play after the break, the Bills kept the trend going as Khamari Dansby shrugged off Captain Munnerlyn on his way to a 73-yard touchdown bringing the Bills within 3.

Things slowed down in the third, as a costly drop by Jonathan Stupar forced a chip shot 22-yard field goal from Mason Crosby to tie the game up at 17. After Vonta Leach add a touchdown reception from 5 yards out, the Bills answered back with one last big scoring play as Matt Leinart found Antonio Bryant in the end zone on a 54-yard bomb.

The fourth quarter would be all defense, and looking at a 4th & inches with just over 7 minutes left, the Bills sent the punt team out to kick it away. In what has become an every game occurrence for the Bills lately, their special teams unit forced another turnover as E.J. Biggers jarred the ball loose from Munnerlyn at the Cincinnati 29 yard line. This led to the deciding 43-yard Crosby field goal to give Buffalo the victory.

The Bills will look to limit fundamental mistakes next week in Miami as they look to sweep the Dolphins. A silver lining in this sloppy victory is that it marks the second straight game without an interception thrown on offense for the Bills, as they threw a combined 8 picks in the first 4 games of the season.
