Re: Unfinished Business: Buffalo Bills Story (Madden 11 Franchise)
Position Battle Results
Position: Quarterback NAME OVR STATS Matt Leinart 73 14/35, 191 yds, 2 td, 1 int | 3+ 5- Erik Patterson (R) 34/66, 301 yds, 2 td, 5 int | 3+ 7- Brian Brohm 67 17/34, 310 yds, 2 td, 1 int | 6+ 5- Analysis: After starting the preseason on a rocky note, Leinart was able to rebound in games 3 and 4 to earn the starting spot to begin the season. Patterson struggled after game 1, but should benefit from having more time to develop rather than being cast into the fire out of the gate. Brohm had another respectable preseason, much like last year, but didn't do enough to dethrone Leinart. The team may look to trade him at some point, potentially for a later draft pick, although he would provide a solid insurance policy if Leinart were to get injured.
Winner: Matt LeinartPosition: Center NAME OVR STATS Justin Hartwig 75 0 sacks allowed | 0+ 2- Hooper Peterson (R) 1 sack allowed | 0+ 3- Analysis: Hartwig retaining the starting center job should come as a surprise to nobody. Peterson needs more time to adjust to NFL competition and stands a good chance at snagging the role once he does. Hartwig is not a great lineman by any means but his experience makes him the better choice for the Bills currently.
Winner: Justin HartwigPosition: Right Tackle NAME OVR STATS Brandon Keith 78 0 sacks allowed | 0+ 0- Bobby Curl 75 0 sacks allowed | 0+ 1- Prince Rosemond (R) 0 sacks allowed | 0+ 3- Analysis: Neither of the right tackles allowed a sack in preseason (the line as a whole only allowed 4 total), but Rosemond did struggle at times with his footwork against edge rushers. The coaching staff has high hopes for him once he develops more, but currently Keith will remain the starter, as Curl wasn't able to earn the starting job either.
Winner: Brandon KeithPosition: Nose Tackle NAME OVR STATS Dwan Edwards 85 3 tkl, 1, tkl ast, 2 tfl, 1 sack | 4+ 0- Torrell Troup 75 5 tkl, 1 tkl ast, 4 tfl, 2 sack | 7+ 1- Chris Baker 69 3 tkl, 2 tfl, 1 sack | 7+ 1- Analysis: Edwards' impressive play against Arizona came while at right end, earning him the starting spot there and leaving nose tackle down to Troup and Baker. Baker showed an uncanny ability to shed blockers throughout preseason and proved disruptive in the backfield but Troup saw similar success as well. With Troup's experience with the Buffalo defense as well as the growth he has shown since entering the league, LeBeau opted to hand him the starting job
Winner: Torrell TroupPosition: Right End NAME OVR STATS Aaron Maybin 87 4 tkl, 1 tfl | 4+ 2- Alex Carrington 72 4 tkl, 1 tkl ast | 3+ 0- Ahmad Mastin (R) 5 tkl, 1 tkl ast, 3 tfl, 1 sack | 4+ 0- Analysis: Unfortunately for these three, Troup winning the nose tackle job puts Edwards back at starting right end. Team officials liked what they saw of Mastin, particularly in the Jacksonville game, and feel he has a bright future. Maybin will move back to linebacker for now and the combo of Carrington and Mastin should provide good depth behind Edwards.
Winner: Dwan EdwardsPosition: Middle Linebacker NAME OVR STATS Kawika Mitchell 71 6 tkl, 2 tfl, 1 int | 6+ 0- Gary Guyton 77 11 tkl, 1 tkl ast, 5 tfl, 1 sack | 10+ 3- Jovan Belcher 78 11 tkl, 1 tkl ast, 7 tfl, 6 sack | 16+ 1- Analysis: Mitchell will be the veteran presence in the middle while Posluszny is out to start the season. After that is where it gets tricky. Guyton was a pro bowler last year but much of his success came as a 3rd down linebacker and in quarter, dime, and nickel formations. It looks like the team is going to stick with that role for him, as Belcher's tremendous showing this preseason is believed to have earned him the other inside linebacker starting spot. It should be interesting to see how the coaching staff manages this position once Posluszny returns after the first month.
Winners: Kawika Mitchell & Jovan BelcherPosition: Right Outside Linebacker NAME OVR STATS Logan Ellis 67 10 tkl, 2 tkl ast, 1 tfl | 5+ 1- Jermaine Dandy (R) 7 tkl, 3 tkl ast, 1 tfl, 1 sack | 7+ 1- Aaron Maybin 72 Analysis: With the results of the nose tackle and right end position battles, Maybin has been thrust back into the right outside linebacker position. However, he likely doesn't have much job security as both Ellis and Dandy had impressive preseasons. Maybin should get the opening day start but I wouldn't be surprised if Ellis or Dandy, once he recovers from a shoulder injury, supplant him as the starter.
Winner: Aaron MaybinPosition: Cornerback NAME OVR STATS Terrence McGee 83 11 tkl, 8 defl | 7+ 0- Bruce Johnson 85 7 tkl, 2 tkl ast, 2 int, 6 defl, 1 td | 9+ 2- Zackary Bowman 82 5 tkl, 1 tkl ast, 2 int, 11 defl | 9+ 1- Analysis: All three of these corners are standout players. Despite McGee being named the second starter behind McKelvin, expect Bowman and Johnson to get their fair share of playing time. The starter could very well change on a week-to-week basis.
Winner: Terrence McGeePosition: Strong Safety NAME OVR STATS Lawrence Wilson 80 7 tkl, 1 tkl ast, 1 tfl, 1 sack | 6+ 3- Tyrell Morrison (R) 8 tkl, 1 tkl ast, 1 tfl | 3+ 1- Analysis: Strong safety was one of the closest position battles of the preseason, but it appears the Bills are opting to go with the big-hitter by naming Wilson the starter. Morrison looked good for most of the preseason but it is likely that his blown coverage against Jacksonville, resulting in a touchdown, really hurt his chances at starting right away as a rookie. It is believed that the Bills prefer Wilson's hard-hitting presence against the run, at least at this point.
Winner: Lawrence Wilson

Re: Unfinished Business: Buffalo Bills Story (Madden 11 Franchise)

LAST YEAR: 11-5, 2nd in AFC East
Last year, the Buffalo Bills had a surprisingly competitive season, ending with a loss to the New York Jets a game shy of the Super Bowl. The challenge now will be to repeat that success and prove that the organization has turned a corner and become a contender, rather than one that experienced a Cinderella season only to have their clock inevitably strike midnight this past January. With the team makeup being nearly the same as last season, Dick Lebeau and the Bills hope to once again challenge for the AFC East title.
Strengths
Secondary - The Bills currently have four cornerbacks capable of starting on most NFL teams. Add to the fact their young free safety, Jairus Byrd, is quickly making a name for himself as a rising star at the position and it spells a tough time for opposing quarterbacks and wide receivers.
Wide Receiver/Tight End - Ever since the departure of Eric Moulds left the team with virtually nobody but Lee Evans, the receiver position had been viewed as a weak spot for the Bills. Now, with rookie of the year Khamari Dansby and emerging young talents Torri Bonner and Jordunn Williams, whoever Buffalo puts behind center has a plethora of options to throw to.
Halfback - Back in the day the Bills used to be powered by the strong running game provided by Thurman Thomas. Nowadays, they have the good fortune of not only having a pro bowler in Fred Jackson, but great depth behind him with homerun threat C.J. Spiller and potential workhorse Darren McFadden.
Weaknesses
Inexperience - Lack of experience is easily the biggest factor in how far this Bills team can really go in the playoffs. The core of their roster is very young and prone to lapses in play you wouldn't expect from a veteran contender.
Outside linebacker - On the right side, Buffalo has a former first-rounder who has been largely a disappointment the last two seasons in Aaron Maybin. On the left, Thomas Howard will be returning after missing most of last year due to injury. It would not be surprising to see the coaching staff give the young, inexperienced Logan Ellis or Jermaine Dandy a shot at some major playing time at some point this season.
Offensive Leader - Despite helping the Bills reach the playoffs and advance to the AFC Championship game, Matt Leinart is not the field general teams drool over for their starting quarterback. They are hopeful that first overall pick Erik Patterson will eventually develop into the prototypical franchise quarterback, but for the time being they must live with the game managing Leinart.
PROJECTION: 11-5, 3rd in AFC East
We think the Bills will have another successful season on their road back to being championship contenders. However, they have the misfortune of playing in one of the toughest divisions competing against the defending-champion Jets and always contending Patriots for a shot at the title. If they can win 11 games again, they should find themselves still playing football in January with a wild card berth.

Re: Unfinished Business: Buffalo Bills Story (Madden 11 Franchise)

BUFFALO, NY -- The Bills and Patriots opened up last season with a Monday night game that resulted in an exciting Buffalo upset. This season's opener would provide plenty of excitement as well.
With the Patriots getting out to an early 17-0 lead within the first 21 minutes, it was shaping up to be another decisive New England victory. However, the Buffalo fortune changed with a Roscoe Parrish kick return for a touchdown. They also received some good fortune at the expense of Wes Welker, who had already amassed 9 catches, when he left the game with a knee injury in the second quarter. Then, after driving down the field for a Mason Crosby field goal with 15 seconds left in the half, Usama Young forced a fumble on the ensuing kickoff. Crosby was able to kick another field goal to send the Bills into the locker room down by only 4.
The second half was very up-and-down for the Bills, with a couple missed Crosby field goals, followed by a timely Leodis McKelvin interception, a poor Matt Leinart pass misses a would-be touchdown to Darren McFadden, and Brandon Meriweather interception on a forced pass. After a goal line stand forced a 19-yard field goal from Stephen Gostkowski, Leinart and the Bills rallied for an 11-yard touchdown pass to C.J. Spiller tying the game at 23.
With 0:35 left on the game clock and starting at their own 22 yard line, Tom Brady showed exactly why he's heralded as one of the best quarterbacks to ever play the game. Brady first connected with Taylor Price for 37 yards to enter Buffalo territory and then found Brandon Tate for 25 yards, despite pressure from Deontae Knight and Chris Baker to reach the 16 yard line. A Gostkowski field goal ended Buffalo's hopes of forcing overtime.
"That last drive really took the wind out of our sails. Our defense had done a great job adapting to and containing Brady and their receivers in the second half, so for them to drive down like that was heartbreaking," said head coach Dick Lebeau. "We just have to use this as motivation when we play them again in 2 weeks." Next week, however, will be no easy task either for the Bills as they head to the Meadowlands to take on the defending champion New York Jets.
