Divisional Blogs
One of the toughest divisions in the NFL, the Jets and Patriots are up to their usual tricks while the Bills are in unfamiliar territory sitting at 5-2. Unfortunately, we aren't sure if they are for real, given that they've only beaten one team who currently has a winning record (the opponents they've beaten have a combined 11-22 record). The fate of their season hinges on their quarterback situation, and they'll need whoever is at the helm to be at their best as they face winning teams in their next 3 games. They might catch a lucky break though, with 5 of their last 6 games coming against teams with currently 2 wins or less. The Jets, as predicted, have the #1 defense in the NFL. They're getting solid play from QB Mark Sanchez (12 TD, 6 INT) and are sitting pretty in 1st place in the division. Tom Brady is having another MVP-caliber season and has the Patriots tied for second. The Dolphins have been a mess thus far this season, having trouble putting points on the scoreboard and preventing their opponent from putting at least 20.
The Cincinnati Bengals, despite losing Carson Palmer for weeks 2-4 and putting their offense at the mercy of journeyman Kerry Collins find themselves at first place in the division led by Rey Maualuga and the rest of their strong defensive unit. Bernard Scott has done an excellent job in his first year as their primary running back, averaging 5.8 yards per carry. The Steelers are not far behind, and if it wasn't for the loss of Rashard Mendenhall and 5 other starters for several weeks, and the less-than-impressive play from Ben Roethlisberger (4 TD, 7 INT) they might have found themselves in the top spot yet again. Their defense, as usual, has carried them this far and will surely continue to carry them throughout the rest of the season. The Ravens find themselves in a similar position as the Steelers, with 4 people already slated to miss the rest of or most of the season. Luckily, Joe Flacco has really come into his own and is solidifying himself as an elite quarterback (1571 yards, 10 TD, 4 INT). It should come as no surprise that the Browns are yet again dwelling in the cellar of this over-crowded division, although they do have a bright spot in rookie quarterback and 4th overall pick Ryan Parker out of USC, an early rookie of the year candidate.
Another year, another Colts division title on the way. Peyton Manning and Reggie Wayne are still... Peyton Manning and Reggie Wayne. Losing Pierre Garcon and Gary Brackett hurts but they'll be back in plenty of time for the playoffs. The Texans could very well be a winning team, but they've fallen victim to a couple close losses, including an overtime heartbreaker to the Jaguars. If Jacksonville continues to lose, they might consider giving 4th round pick Chaz Myers a shot at QB, as David Garrard is proving that he is clearly not the best man for the job (4 TD, 8 INT). The Vince Young-era might soon be coming to an end in Tennessee, as second year QB Rusty Smith managed last weeks game against the Steelers well en route to a hard-fought victory.
The Chiefs are following up their 10-6 breakout season of a year ago in dominating fashion, with their 2nd-ranked defense holding opponents to 15.2 points per game. Matt Cassel is starting to perform like the QB they hoped for when they acquired him from the Patriots over 2 years ago. If the Broncos continue to lose games, they might prematurely hand the keys to the offense over to Tim Tebow. Oakland has had trouble putting points on the board all season, with poor quarterback play from Jason Campbell, and no real reliable rushing attack with Michael Bush and Legarrette Blount splitting carries. Hope could lie ahead for the Raiders, as whispers around the front office indicate Al Davis might consider either selling the team or seeking out a general manager following this season. The Chargers find themselves at the bottom of the division due to their defense allowing more points than any other team. The loss of LB Shaun Phillips for the entire season surely won't help matters.
The Giants have been powered by a balanced attack all season, with Brandon Jacobs rebounding from consecutive season with under 1,000 yards rushing. He now finds himself 2nd in the NFL in rushing and backup Ahmad Bradshaw is putting up respectable numbers as well, posting 5.5 yards per carry. Rookie linebacker Sean Merrigan has been a standout player on defense and is making a strong case for defensive rookie of the year. Dallas finds themselves at a crux, as their previously potent rushing attack is looking dormant with Marion Barber and Felix Jones both averaging under 3 yards per carry. Dez Bryant is proving to be a top receiver opposite Miles Austin and DeMarcus Ware is the early defensive player of the year favorite as the leader in both sacks and tackles. The Redskins still lack an offensive line to protect Donovan McNabb (25 sacks allowed) and are having to rely too heavily on their Brian Orakpo-powered defense. Now that he's out for 8 weeks, the near future is looking dim in Washington. The Eagles remain the only winless team, as their offense struggles to only muster an average of 12.5 points per game. Kevin Kolb (3 TD, 8 INT, 49% Completion) looks like he's not the franchise quarterback everyone thought he was.
Green Bay is lucky Ryan Grant is having a solid season with 5.1 yards per carry and 5 TD, as Aaron Rodgers is still suffering from the slump that plagued him throughout the 2010 season. They had better hope he can bounce back before Matt Forte and the Bears run away with the division. Jay Cutler, although he still gets himself into trouble with interceptions, has clearly benefited from finally having some receiving options in Early Doucet and Mario Manningham. Their defense is among the best yet again, as are the 3rd-ranked Vikings. Unfortunately, when Brett Favre finally retired and Tavaris Jackson signed with the Raiders, that left Luke McCown to man the quarterback position. Now that he's gone down for 3 weeks with an abdominal tear and Chad Pennington is out for the season with a fractured elbow, Adrian Peterson has been out since week 2 with a dislocated hip and Toby Gerhart is gone for the season, the Minnesota offense is powered by 2010 6th round pick Joe Webb at QB and rookie 3rd round pick Jamal Phillips at HB. The Lions like what they have in Matt Stafford and have played better than their record indicates, but they still have a ways to go in the rebuilding process.
Another one of the more competitive divisions, the Panthers find themselves at a surprising 5-1 thanks to strong play from Jimmy Clausen (1325 yards, 7 TD, 4 INT) and his favorite target, TE David Thomas. They also appear to have struck gold with their speedy linebacker tandem of rookies Dominique Givens (4th round) and Dwayne Houston (7th round) as they are the top 2 on the team in tackles. The Saints are among the best teams in the league yet again, although some critics question the lack of carries they've given free agent acquisition Tashard Choice, especially given Pierre Thomas's abysmal play. Michael Turner has been having a career year for the Falcons but many question whether their defense will be good enough down the stretch to really make a run in the playoffs. The Buccaneers, despite a strong season from Marshawn Lynch thus far, are struggling to compete due to Josh Freeman and his 56.2 rating and 10 interceptions. They've got some solid pieces on defense and Mike Williams looks to be a franchise receiver in-the-making.
San Francisco will be without Alex Smith for 8 more weeks with a herniated disk, but after an impressive start from Charlie Whitehurst against the Lions in week 7, they might not miss him much at all. Their defense will keep them in any ballgame regardless, with perhaps the best linebacker group in the league with Haralson-Willis-Lawson. The rest of the division is hot on their tail, though, with St. Louis riding strong play from franchise QB Sam Bradford and a surprising 5th ranked defense. The Seahawks, despite a disappointing season from Leon Washington and Julius Jones, appear reluctant to give Justin Forsett a chance. Matt Hasselbeck can keep them winning for only so long with no true #1 receiver, although Golden Tate has played impressively. The Cardinals have also managed to stay competitive despite losing Matt Moore and now John Skelton to injury, leaving the offense in the hands of Max Hall and a struggling Beanie Wells. The rest of their season does not look promising.Last edited by bichettehappens; 10-03-2010, 01:04 AM.Comment

Telford's Take - We'll know for sure what we're made of after these next 3 games, as we face the Jets (5-1), Cowboys (4-3), and Chiefs (5-1). The Cowboys game in particular is important to me, given that they were the team to defeat us in our last 2 trips to the Super Bowl. It would be a sort of "statement" victory. I think we've got a good chance of making the playoffs though still, because of all the weak teams at the end of the schedule. Brohm will continue to be our quarterback as long as he keeps us winning games. Sure, he's nothing flashy but when he simply manages the game well we find ourselves earning victories.Last edited by bichettehappens; 10-02-2010, 11:34 PM.Comment

Boomer Esiason
New York is just on fire right now. Best defense in the league is going to be too much for Brohm.
Bill Cowher
Lebeau has done great things with this Bills team, but Rex Ryan has done better with the Jets.
Shannon Sharpe
Braylon Edwards is making plays... Mark Sanchez is having a breakout year... Yeah, this is gonna be a long day for Buffalo.
James Brown
I think you all summed it up pretty well, Jets are just too much for this young Bills team to handle.

Re: Unfinished Business: Buffalo Bills Story (Madden 11 Franchise)
Getting Defensive
Jets defense intercepts 5, 2 returned for touchdowns in divisional matchup
Calvin Pace celebrates after returning an interception for a touchdown late in the 4th.
EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ -- It was a long day for Buffalo quarterbacks. Maybe it was the weather, or perhaps the top-ranked defense they were up against. Buffalo entered play with hopes of unseating the division leading Jets but 5 interceptions later they were sent home disappointed. The New York offense struck first, as Mark Sanchez connected with Dustin Keller for an impressive over-the-shoulder touchdown grab in the first quarter. The Bills answered back with a 41-yard strike to Lee Evans. Their luck with the passing game quickly changed as Brian Brohm threw a costly interception to Bryan Thomas that was returned for a touchdown in the 2nd quarter. Despite surpassing 200 yards and completing 63% of his passes, Brohm was removed from the game in the 3rd quarter after throwing a third interception.
Dustin Keller reels in a 21-yard touchdown reception.
Unfortunately, their offensive woes continued with Colt McCoy at the helm, as he completed a mere 30% of his passes with an interception of his own, prompting his replacement in the 4th quarter by newly acquired Matt Leinart. On Leinart's first drive under center, Calvin Pace picked off a pass intended for Fred Jackson and returned it 15 yards to the endzone. However, a bright spot came on the following drive as Leinart led the offense down the field in less than 1:30 and punctuated the drive with a 24 yard touchdown pass to Roscoe Parrish.
The Buffalo defensive unit did a good job of containing the Jets offense, limiting Shonn Greene to only 2.8 yards per carry, but unfortunately when the offense is giving the other team points there's little a defense can do. Buffalo came into the game with the goal of pressuring Sanchez and forcing him to make mistakes. They were able to consistently get pressure on the quarterback but Sanchez was able to avoid trouble, allowing only 1 sack despite being pressured for most of the game.
The Bills try to bounce back next week at home against the Dallas Cowboys.

Bryan Thomas intercepts a pass intended for Stupar and takes it for 6.
Lee Evans scores a 41 yard TD in the first quarter.
David Harris intercepts a pass from Brian Brohm.
Terrance McGee walks off the field after sustaining another minor injury.
Roscoe Parrish scores with 14 seconds left but the game had already been decided.

Telford's Take - This is a tough loss to swallow. Aside from the 3 interceptions, Brohm played extremely well. Unfortunately, those 3 picks are mistakes we just can't have if we're going to continue to compete. It might be time to give McCoy or Leinart a fair shot. Jackson ran the ball well, but we were playing catch up all game and abandoned the run. We need to come out playing hard from the get-go next week and make a statement by beating the Cowboys in dominating fashion.Last edited by bichettehappens; 10-02-2010, 11:35 PM.Comment

Bills name McCoy starter against Dallas

McCoy
BUFFALO, NY -- In a surprising turn of events, the Buffalo Bills have named second-year quarterback Colt McCoy as the starter for their upcoming matchup against the Dallas Cowboys. McCoy, who was acquired from the Cleveland Browns during the draft last off-season, has been largely unimpressive in spot duty for the Bills so far this season. Quarterback coach George Cortez attributes that, however, to not having a weeks worth of preparation with the first-team offense. "Any time you come into a game on a whim, without the reps to build up chemistry with your receivers, you're at a disadvantage," remarked Cortez.
Head coach Dick Lebeau made sure to stress that this move was not a permanent one, nor an indication that incumbent starter Brian Brohm has lost his job. "Looking at the matchup, we simply feel that in this particular game Colt gives us the best chance to win," Lebeau told reporters. "When you face a defense like [Dallas], with guys like Ware, Spencer, and Ratliff it's almost imperative that you have a QB who can evade the rush. We're going to see how this goes and then re-evaluate the position next week." Seldom do teams with a winning record willfully change starting quarterbacks halfway through the season, so it will be interesting to see how this move pans out. Brohm was not available for comment at this time.
Bills notes
The gloves are coming off. Or at least, the glove that QB Matt Leinart wears on his throwing hand will be. The Buffalo coaching staff has reportedly requested that he no longer wear the glove that he commonly dons on his throwing hand (left)."Unless it's a cold weather situation, I feel it acts more as an obstruction than anything else. For the time being we'd like to see how he performs without it," Cortez told reporters. In related news, the staff is impressed with how quickly he is picking up the playbook. "He's showing a real desire to learn the system," said offensive coordinator Norv Turner. "He feels he's got something to prove and it shows in his work ethic." He might even be considered for a start at some point down the road depending on how the coming games play out.
Leinart in last Sunday's game.
Cornerback Terrence McGee has suffered two different injuries in each of his last two games. Although these injuries have been minor, the training staff is recommending easing his workload. This means more playing time for Zackary Bowman and Bruce Johnson. He'll surely get plenty of time this weekend as the Bills are faced with the daunting task of containing perhaps the best receiving group in the league in Dallas, with Miles Austin, Dez Bryant, Roy Williams, and Jason Witten all having productive season thus far.Last edited by bichettehappens; 10-03-2010, 06:17 PM.Comment

Keys to the Game
Establish the Run
This could prove difficult, with Felix Jones out and Gurode likely out with injury. They must keep the defense honest, thoughBlitz, Blitz, Blitz!
If the Bills don't pressure Romo, this is going to be a long day for their defense through the air
Disguise Coverage
McCoy is inexperienced, if they can keep him second guessing the play they'll be in good shapeJackson 20
Buffalo is 4-0 in games where Jackson gets at least 20 carries, and 1-3 when he does not3rd Down D
The Bills currently rank dead last in the league in 3rd down conversions. Dallas needs to keep it that way and prevent long drives.Protect the Football
Turnovers cost the Bills a chance to win last week, and possibly Brohm's starting job. McCoy must be careful
Coverage:
Analyst Picks:
Dan Marino
Romo has played so well this year, and with all those weapons I don't think the Bills secondary can keep up. If I had that many weapons when I was in the league I would have a Super Bowl ring.
Boomer Esiason
This is a tough one to call, but you know what, I think McCoy is going to look good out there after getting a full week's worth of reps. Bills with the upset
Bill Cowher
I think the Bills want this game more. We've heard all week that they're looking to make a statement with this game, they're going to come out fired up and ready to play.
Shannon Sharpe
That Buffalo offensive line isn't good enough to keep Ware and Spencer away from McCoy, and they're going to have trouble stopping the passing game. Dallas.
James Brown
Looks like we've got a split decision here. The Cowboys are proven, Bills just started winning this year. Until the Bills beat a team with a winning record its going to be hard to pick them over a team like Dallas.Last edited by bichettehappens; 10-03-2010, 07:17 PM.Comment

Let's go first to our injury specialist Stephania Bell before making the rounds...
Stephania Bell - Injury Specialist
Just got word that Cowboys' center Andre Gurode will be ruled out for today. Anytime you have an injury like a meniscus tear, it's better to be cautious, especially at a position that relies so heavily on pushing off from the knees. On the other side, Terrence McGee will be in the line-up as expected. He practiced all week, but I would imagine they'll take it easy with him and rotate him out more often than usual to avoid another injury.
Ed Werder - Field Reporter
I just spoke with DeMarcus Ware a few minutes ago and he told me that Dallas is not concerned with the lack of game film on Bills quarterback Colt McCoy. He told me they've seen enough to know what to focus on and expect to be pressuring him all day. I also had a chance to speak with Dick Lebeau and, while he wouldn't reveal any specific information about the gameplan, he did tell me to expect some surprises today.
Matthew Berry - Fantasy Analyst
A few love/hates in this game. Khamari Dansby has proved to be a big-play threat, and while Dallas has a solid defensive unit, they're susceptible to letting up the big plays. For that same reason, I love TE Torri Bonner this week, Dallas is going to be focused on stopping Lee Evans, Fred Jackson, and pressuring McCoy so I expect one of, if not both of them to score a TD. On the Dallas side, a rare occurrence today as I will categorize Marion Barber as a "love". There's no Felix Jones to steal carries and Buffalo will be focusing on stopping the aerial attack. Plus, Brandon Jacobs had a huge day against this defense and they are very similar backs.
Hate the Buffalo defense and Antonio Bryant has been a non-factor all season. Last but not least, if you're in a deep league and your QB is on a bye, or if you're in a 2-QB format, McCoy might be worth a look if you're desperate. He'll play better than he has in his few appearances this year... it'd be hard not to...Last edited by bichettehappens; 10-03-2010, 08:52 PM.Comment

**Note: I recorded many highlights from this game but don't feel like uploading them and putting together the reel at this time, I will add that later
Field Day
Buffalo's QB woes continue in loss to Dallas
Colt McCoy dives and misses Terrence Newman as he returns an interception for a touchdown.
BUFFALO, NY -- Leading up to yesterday's game against the Dallas Cowboys, Buffalo's coaching staff was convinced that starting Colt McCoy at quarterback for the first time all season would put them in the best position to win.Up until the final seconds of the first half, it looked like they might have been right. Unfortunately, that's when things began to take a turn for the worst.
Mike Bell slips past R.T. Smiley to score in the 2nd quarter.
Up 17-10 with under 2 minutes to play in the second quarter, Buffalo appeared to be in control of the game and poised to add on to their lead before halftime. Cornerback Jacob Lacey intercepted a poorly thrown pass from McCoy at the Dallas 19 and ran it back 81 yards for a score, leaving 7 seconds on the clock.
After the half, things would get even worse for McCoy as he would go on to throw two more interceptions in the third quarter, both of which were returned for touchdowns as well.
Lee Evans dives into the endzone to bring the Bills within 7 in the fourth quarter.
After the third interception, made by Terrence Newman, McCoy was removed from the game in favor of newcomer Matt Leinart. Similar to how his stint against the New York Jets last week had start, Leinart too threw an interception on his first drive to Mike Jenkins. Luckily, Jenkins did not return the pick for a touchdown and Leinart went on to have a productive day, connecting with Lee Evans for a 31-yard touchdown in the 4th quarter.
Down 31-24 with just under 3:00 in regulation, Buffalo faced a crucial 4th and 1 at the Dallas 14 yard line. The Bills chose to go for it on 4th, but Leinart's pass landed shy of Torri Bonner. The Buffalo defense had multiple opportunities to stop Marion Barber from getting a first down to give their offense one more shot, but in the end Barber and the Cowboys prevailed. Another rough day for Buffalo quarterbacks is sure to cause quite the commotion in practice this week. It will be interesting to see if Brian Brohm will return to the starting role next week against Kansas City, or if Leinart will be given a chance to start.

Telford's Take:
That was a tough loss to swallow. We outplayed them in every facet of the game, except for those darn turnovers. I'm sorely disappointed in the way McCoy performed. Our defense did a spectacular job of limiting the Dallas offense to merely 1 touchdown. We deviated from our gameplan at times and McCoy just made poor decisions. The silver lining in all of this is that we know our defense can keep up with the high-powered offenses of the league, and Leinart played very well after his first drive. It is imperative that we rebound next week against Kansas City.Last edited by bichettehappens; 10-04-2010, 06:45 AM.Comment

Quarterback Crisis Mode
__________________________________________________
By Ross Tucker
ESPN.com
BUFFALO, NY -- The Brian Brohm "experiment" started off the 2011 season for the Buffalo Bills. After three early wins to start the season, the decision to start Brohm appeared to be going as smooth as can be. After a few tough losses, however, the Buffalo offense started to fall apart at the seams. GM Tony Telford determined third-string scrambler Josh Johnson wasn't the answer and sent him packing to Chicago just before the trade deadline and added Matt Leinart as the 3rd string quarterback. In yesterday's game, the Bills opted to start Colt McCoy following Brohm's three interception performance against the Jets. McCoy rewarded them with a three pick bid of his own, before being benched in the third quarter. Now, Buffalo has reached a crossroads with their quarterback situation, putting the fate of their once-promising season in jeopardy.
Brohm-------McCoy-------Leinart-------Johnson
Do the Bills revert back to starting Brohm and hope he manages the game well enough for Fred Jackson and their stout, playmaking defense to win them ballgames? Do they throw Matt Leinart to the wolves and hope he can cut it? Or how about option C: sign a veteran and hope he can learn the system quick enough to earn a few wins, before attempting to find plan D this upcoming offseason.
The kicker in all of this is that this past offseason, Buffalo had the 4th overall pick in the draft. Wanting to move out of the first round, Buffalo traded the pick to the Cleveland Browns; the move in which they acquired McCoy. With that 4th pick, the Browns selected QB Ryan Parker out of USC. Since taking the starting job in week 4, Parker has gone on to have an impressive rookie campaign, and is the front-runner for Offensive Rookie of the Year.
Parker
Let's compare Parker's numbers with the Buffalo QB trio for the 2011 season:
Comp % Yards TD INT Brian Brohm 80 50% 1,178 7 11 Colt McCoy 27 37% 493 3 4 Matt Leinart 15 51% 195 2 2 Ryan Parker 145 56% 1,738 17 10
In retrospect, Telford and the Bills likely regret passing up the chance to draft such a promising prospect. At least they'll get to keep their 1st round pick in the 2012 draft, since it looks like McCoy will not start the necessary 8 games. Also worth noting, the Bills head to Cleveland in 2 weeks to take on the Browns. I wonder if Parker will outperform whichever Buffalo QB gets drawn out of a hat that day...Last edited by bichettehappens; 10-04-2010, 06:56 AM.Comment
