    Legacy of Coach Jeffries

Wolfpack cut ties with Ault, hire Jeffries

    Reno, NV. 7/24/2010

The University of Nevada has found their new coach, Ernie Jeffries after firing Chris Ault last week. Jeffries is most known as a high school coach who amassed six straight Nevada 4A high school championships in the mid to late nineties. After his last title in 1999m, Ernie Jeffries accepted the head coaching position at Div II Northern Nevada. At Northern Nevada, he won three D2 championships and became only the second coach in school history to amass over 100 wins in his career at Northern Nevada. Jeffries brings along his son Todd Jeffries as the offensive coordinator, and Damion Kirkpatrick as the Defensive coordinator.

Coach Jeffries is most known as a disciplinarian and his teams are fundamentally sound on both sides of the ball. Todd Jeffries brings to Nevada a potent spread option playbook, while Damion Kirkpatrick brings a blitzkrieg in his 4-3 defensive alignment.

Coach Jeffries has a bright outlook for the Wolfpack this season and doesn't believe in a honeymoon period for new coaches: "We got the talent on both sides to do some damage in the WAC. There's no reason why we shouldn't be able to win 10 games this season. I'm not going to wait to win, we win with what we now, and we have a lot of talent."

Hopefully Coach Jeffries is correct that the Wolfpack will be a force to be reckoned with this year.

    Re: Legacy of Coach Jeffries

An earthquake has realigned the hierarchy of football power in the Wild West.

    Los Angeles, LA 8/1/2010

The recent announcement on conference realignment has re-shaped the college football landscape for the better. It all started with Boise State's move to the Pac 10, and Washington State's subsequent exit from the conference. Washington State found a home in the MWC, but this was just the beginning. Utah and BYU decided to leave the MWC for greener pastures and found shelter in the PAC 10. This put Arizona and Arizona State on the chopping block, and they scrambled to fill the two team void in the MWC. The Pac 10 was done with making moves, but the MWC felt like upgrading more and added Nevada, relegating New Mexico to the WAC. Wyoming also left the MWC finding a home in the recently pillage WAC. TCU feeling as if the conference was falling in prestige accepted an invite to the Big 12, while Colorado now in need of a conference, accepted the vacant spot in the MWC. Finally, all was calm for a short time, until Nebraska decided to join the Big 10, and Northwestern accepted a spot in the Big 12 North.

The moves for Arizona State, Arizona, and Washington State concern only football and they will be considered a PAC 10 member in all other sports as the PAC 10 can only have ten football members under the league's original charter. Boise State, BYU, and Utah will become PAC 10 members in all sports. Gonzaga was added to the PAC 10 conference for basketball and all other sports. This assuaged college basketball pundits who were afraid the new realignment would disrupt the current thursday saturday basketball scheduling the PAC 10. The following groupings were determined to better facilitate traveling for all members: UCLA/USC, WASHINGTON/WSU, OREGON/OSU, BOISE/GONZAGA, ARIZONA/ASU, CAL/STANFORD, UTAH/BYU.

    Realignment Winners

    1. Boise State- Now they can't blame poor quality conference play
    2. Nebraska- They escape the lackluster Big 12 North for the grand stage of the Big 10.
    3. TCU-They get promoted to a BCS conference and are guaranteed a trip every year to the Big 12 Championship
4.Utah- They follow the coattails of Boise, so playing for a NC is not out of the question.
    5. Nevada- Now in a much stronger conference and is considered a contender for the MWC championship

    Realignment Losers

    1. Arizona- They were poised to win a PAC 10 championship, they'll have to settle for a league with less clout and no auto bid.
    2. Colorado- They thought they were getting a builder in Hawkins, but I guess for every successful project there's a dud.
    3. Arizona State- Same story as Arizona
    4. Washington State- Well they'll have a chance to maybe make a bowl.
    5. Wyoming and New Mexico- Debris from the realignment storm, that unfortunately landed in the lowly WAC

    Dynasty Settings
    Quarter Length: 8 Mins
Sliders- Playmakers slow speed varsity, I really like these sliders, they are challenging and play out realistically

What do you do for the passing game with these sliders? I am having a bit of a problem with the pass defense.

I just use the most recent slider set playmakers has up on his thread with zero qb accuracy. I might go with the option of qb accuracy at five and then decreasing human WR catch. I feel like it's hit or miss usually whether or not my qb hits his target, but overall I'm like the passing game with qb accuracy at zero, I just have to make sure my qb's feet are set.

Sorry I misread your post, I just keep pass defense sliders the same.

              2010 Nevada Wolfpack Depth Chart

              Quarterbacks YR OVR
              1. Colin Kaepernick SR (RS) 91
              2. Tyler Lantrip SR (RS) 78

              Jesse Palmer's Grade: A-
Colin Kaepernick is one of the best playmakers at the quarterback position. He can throw for tds and run for them. Lantrip is more than a capable backup in case Kaepernick should go down to an injury.

              Runningbacks
              1.Vince Taua SR (RS) 91
              2. Lampford Mark JR (RS) 84
              3. Courtney Randall SR (RS) 80
FB Mike Ball SO (RS) 68

              Jesse Palmer's Grade: B+
The Wolfpack have a deep stable of quality runningbacks led by Vince Taua. Taua has the ability to churn out the critical yards to close out games and can break a big gainer when needed. Mike Ball is a versatile fullback and will see touches in Todd Jeffries' spread option attack.

              Wide Receivers
              1. Brandon Wimberly SO (RS) 83
              2.Tray Seesions JR (RS) 80
              3. Chris Wellington SR (RS) 80
              4. Malcolm Shepherd SR (RS) 79

              Jesse Palmer's Grade: B-
Their receiving corps doesn't have a bona fide playmaker, but Brandon Wimberly could assume this role given the opportunity. He'll be dangerous in the jet sweep and could be a go-to possession type receiver, but ultimately Seesions, Wellington, and Shepherd will need to develop into producers in order to take the pressure off Kaepernick.

              Tight End
              1. Virgil Green SR (RS) 70
              2. Zach Sudfeld JR (RS) 65

              Jesse Palmer's Grade: C-
Virgil Green has the tangibles you want speed, height, etc. but has failed to put it altogether. If Green can utilize his athleticism effectively, he'll be an all MWC performer and should see an invite to the combine.

              Starting Offensive Line

LT Steve Haley JR (RS) 81
LG John Bender SR (RS) 82
C Jeff Meads JR (RS) 75
RG Chris Barker SO (RS) 77
RT Jose Acuna SR (RS) 78

              Jesse Palmer's Grade: B-

This is a veteran group that will be able to protect Kaepernick and spur the ground attack.

              Bottomline:
This offense is talented and should have no trouble putting up points. Kaepernick is a solid signal caller who can bail himself out of tough situations with his feet. Taua is a 1,000 yard rusher in waiting and both Wimberly and Green are poised to burst onto the scene as playmakers. This offense should be fun to watch.

2010 Nevada Wolfpack Depth Chart (Cont'd)

                Starting Defensive Line

DE Dontay Moch SR (RS) 80
DT Zach Madonick JR (RS) 78
DT Mike Andrews JR (RS) 74
DE Brett Roy JR (RS) 70

                Chris Spielman's Grade: C+
Moch has a huge motor and athletic ability, he is poised for a big year. The rest of the line is solid and should give Kirkpatrick good results on the field.

                Linebacker Corps

OLB James Johnson JR (RS) 77
MLB Joe Easter JR (RS) 70
OLB Brandon Marshall JR (RS) 80

                Chris Spielman's Grade: C
A solid group which will be led by Marshall who is a good edge rusher and coverage linebacker. Easter is a solid tackler but his speed holds him from making the big play. Johnson under Kirkpatrick will blitz more and should see his sack total improve.

                Secondary

CB Isaiah Frey JR (RS) 74
FS Marlon Johnson SO (RS) 73
SS Mose Denton SO (RS) 70
CB Khalid Wooten SO (RS) 70

                Chris Spielman's Grade: C-
A young secondary which opponent's will test early and often. Wooten has the speed to match up with any receiver, but he lacks the intangibles as of now to be an impact corner. They should be aided by a strong front seven, but they will be more likely the source if the defense should struggle this season.

                Special Teams

                K Ricky Drake SR 77
                P Brad Langley SR 85
KR Khalid Wooten SO (RS) 89
KR Vince Taua SR (RS) 98
PR Vince Taua SR (RS) 98

                Chris Spielman's Grade: B+

Ricky Drake from medium range is lights out, he'll struggle with longer kicks though. Langley is more than capable of flipping the field position battle with a good punt. Wooten can be electrifying on returns with his speed, while Taua is the safe and consistent returner who will see most of the duty.

Bottomline:This defense can keep the Wolfpack in games but against stronger competition, the secondary could be exploited. Ultimately, the success of this defense will rest on the front seven and whether or not they can get enough pressure to disrupt the opposition's passing game.

A Spartan Win? No way San Jose

                      Game Recap

Nevada came into yesterday's game with high hopes as did San Jose State. But San Jose State's furtive hopes were dashed on their first offensive play as quarterback Jordan La Secla was sacked by Brett Roy who forced the fumble, recovered it, and ran 19 yds for a 7-0 Nevada lead. At the end of the first quarter Nevada had stretched the lead to 21-7 and San Jose was on the verge of being blown out.

Runningback Lamon Muldrow sparked a productive second quarter for the Spartans capping his splendid performance for the quarter with a 77 yard rumble n dash down the Wolfpack five yard line. The Spartans would go on to school from there on a 3 yd run by Brandon Rutley. Following a Nevada turnover which set them up with great field position, La Secla found Beauchman in the endzone and the game was all square at 21. Nevada was able to tack on a field goal before the half to make it 24-21.

The Wolfpack came out in the second half on a mission led by their explosive QB Colin Kaepernick. Kaepernick led them down to the Spartan's six before being injured, his replacement Taylor Lantrip found Virgil Green on the ensuing play in the back of the endzone to make it 31-21 Nevada. That would prove to more than enough as La Secla and Muldrow's second half ineffectiveness stalled many Spartan drives. The Wolfpack tacked on 28 more points as Brandon Wimberly, Via Taua, and Lampford Mark all gashed the Spartan defense for big play touchdowns. Final score: Nevada 59, San Jose State 21.

                      C. Kaepernick: 14/27 209 yds 1 INT, 11 rushes 58 yds 2 Tds

                      T. Burns: 9 tkls

                      Jeffries' Take

The guys came out with some enthusiasm to start the game, but around the start of the second we kind of stopped playing our kind of ball and tried to do too much. I really liked the way in which we bounced back in the second half and this should provide good momentum for the Notre Dame game. Overall, good job but we have to play fundamental football for sixty minutes and lapses will cost us against Notre Dame.

                        Wolfpack fail in South Bend

Nevada falls apart in fourth quarter, falls to Notre Dame

                        Game Recap

Cole Kaepernick displayed yesterday why he was selected to the pre-season All-WAC team as he carried Nevada in their upset bid of Notre Dame, and he also displayed why many think he is Nevada's whole team as the Wolfpack fell to Notre Dame after Kaepernick fumbled and Notre Dame returned it for the go-ahead score. Kaepernick's replacements Tyler Lantrip and Cody Fajardo were unable to mount a comeback or for that matter complete a pass. But lost in all this, is how well Notre Dame played both offensively and defensively in crucial moments to pull out an impressive win over Nevada.

Armando Allen led the offensive attack for Notre Dame as he weaved his way through a rather porous Nevada defense for over a hundred yards and three scores. Dayne Crist provided an adequate support role through the air as he was able to spread the ball around to a number of receivers including the first score of the game, a 3 yard pass to B. Jackson. Nevada answered quickly as Kaepernick found Brandon Wimberly streaking over the middle for a 76 yard catch and run for a touchdown. The score was back and forth for most of the first half and Nevada was able to take a 24-21 lead over Notre Dame into half time.

Nevada continued displaying confidence in a tough road atmosphere as they were able to hold Notre Dame scoreless in the third and tack on a Drake field goal to make it 24-17. However, they were not out of the woods yet as Crist was able to do what he wasn't able to do in the third, and that was prolong drives by converting on third down. Notre Dame was able to cash a long drive in at the start of the fourth quarter when Crist found Floyd in the endzone for a touchdown.

Nevada's offense now in a prolonged state of dormancy had to respond in order to stymie Notre Dame's momentum. Nevada first two plays went for zero yards, and facing a crucial third down Ernie Jeffries decided to call a roll out play for Kapernick, which was played well defensively by the Irishmen. Kapernick decided to not throw the ball away, instead taking a huge hit by Neal, which proved to be a bad decision as David Poluszny picked up the fumble and ran it in for a touchdown. The hit knocked Kaepernick from the game, and his stand-ins were incapable of moving the ball or avoiding sacks. Notre Dame was able to score two more touchdowns ending any chance for a Nevada comeback.

Final score: Notre Dame 45---Nevada 24

                        Key Stats

                        Jeffries' Take

It's tough to look at this game and say we did everything we could to win. If a man goes down, we need one to step up and I'm not seeing it right now. That's what good teams do, they figure out a way to win through adversity. Can we play with the top teams on the road? You betcha, we did that for three quarters today, but can we pull a game out under difficult circumstances? Hopefully, we'll answer this question next week against Boise State. This week there's going to a lot of teaching going on at practice because this team needs to get back to the fundamentals of football, which is valuing possession and field position.

Very hard team to rebuild and I don't have the right roster.
