I have the original buckeye roster and yeah they are a tough team to rebuild. After this year, I'll to start a soph at qb with no experience so that should be interesting.

I guess the only tip I have is to switch from the pistol to the oregon spread or another spread option run game. I just prefer it more than the piston with their personnel.

Also I'd try recruiting a qb my first season because both Kaepernick and Lantrip are seniors, and your left with a sophomore or redshirt freshman for year two.

Lantrip named starter for Boise game.

Tyler Lantrip is expected to start Saturday against Boise State. Starting quarterback Cole Kaepernick is being sidelined for the next two weeks with a strainedd back. His replacement Lantrip played well in relief against San Jose State but struggled last week against Notre Dame. Cody Fajardo, the true freshman who's redshirt was burned last week at Notre Dame will see some snaps regardless of Lantrip's performance. Coach Jeffries has also said he is looking to run more against Boise in hopes of taking some pressure off Lantrip.

              Different Places, Same Result

Both Nevada and Boise State have gone their separate ways after the recent conference realignments that took place before the season, but the result yesterday was the same as it's been in the past, a win for Boise State. To say Boise State offense was dominant would be an understatement as Boise State's opening drive was quick and fruitful with Jeremy Avery doing on the scoring honors on a 21 yard run that was setup by a couple great blocks. After stopping Nevada, Boise State got the ball again and put it in the hands of Avery. Avery this time pulled off a 71 yard td run to make it 14-0. Nevada was able to respond with a couple screen passes to Via Taua which set up a Taua 2 yard td run to make it 14-7.

The Broncos were again able to move the ball quickly into Nevada territory. This time Coach Peterson decided to call a screen to Avery, and Avery took the pass 15 yards to the house for a 21-7 lead. Again Nevada answered with a sustained drive, which was capped by another 2 yd td run by Via Taua. The Wolfpack were able to get a stop off a Boise turnover, and Lantrip guided the Wolfpack into Boise territory with under a minute to play in the first half. Facing a third down at Boise's twenty with only 15 seconds left and no timeouts, Todd Jeffries called a pass play. Lantrip tried to find Wimberly in the back of the endzone but the pass was late and was intercepted allowing Boise State to take a 21-14 lead into halftime.

Both teams found difficulty in scoring at the beginning of the second half, as Nevada was able to bring pressure and force a couple errants throws by Kellen Moore. The defensive pressure by Nevada's front four was rewarded when DT Zach Madonick forced Moore to fumble upon being sacked, and Madonick was able to return the fumble 17 yds to tie the game up at 21. Boise was able to answer with a long clock chewing drive. Doug Martin got Boise down to Nevada's three yard line with a 28 yard catch and run. Nevada tried making a goalline stand, but Jeremy Avery was able to punch the ball in on fourth and goal making the score 28-21 Boise as the third quarter came to a close.

The fourth and goal td run by Avery proved to be a backbreaker as Boise was able to stop the Nevada offense and score again off a 5 yd pass from Moore to Shoemaker to make it 35-21. Boise was able to get a field goal to eliminate any hopes of a comeback. Lantrip was able to connect with M. Shepherd as time expired in the endzone to make it 38-28 Boise State.

Final Score: Boise State 38---------Nevada 28

              Key players
              T. Lantrip: 21/29 221 yds 1TD/2INT
              V. Taua: 15 rushes 41 yds 2 TDs, 9 rec 107 yds

              M. Andrews: FF FR

              K. Moore: 14/19 250 yds 2 TDs
              J. Avery: 23 rushes 254 yds 3 TDs, 2 rec 38 yds TD
              T. Shoemaker: 4 rec 33 yds TD
              A. Pettis: 3 rec 65 yds
              D. Mackey: 17 tks, sack
              J. Johnson: 7 tks INT
              J. Gavins: INT

              Jeffries' Take

Our defensive line was just pushed around from the start. There's no excuse to give up 250 yards to any running back. Fortunately, we got some pressure in the third quarter which kept the deficit manageable for us, but in the end we weren't able to get the big third down stops we needed to knock off a team of Boise's caliber. Hopefully, we can open up MWC play next week with a better defensive performance or this could be a long....long season.

                Wolfpack down the Falcons, 35-7

Colin Kaepernick came back a week earlier than expected to start yesterday against Air Force. Kaepernick reeled off a 51 yard run out of the shotgun on the first drive which led to a Ricky Drake field goal to make it 3-0 Nevada. Nevada would add another field goal in the first quarter to make it 6-0 Nevada. The second quarter was not kind to the Wolfpack as Kaepernick went down again to an injury, this time a torn shoulder likely sidelining him for the next five weeks. The Falcons quickly capitalized as they were able to get a stop and Asher Clark ran for a 1 TD for the first and only Falcon lead of the game, 7-6 Air Force.

Back came the Wolfpack led by Via Taua who was able to punch the ball in on a 8 yard td run to make it 13-7 Nevada. The rest of the half was dominated by the stout Nevada defense and Nevada was able to take a 13-7 lead into halftime.

In the third quarter, both teams were held scoreless as both defenses dominated the quarter. Nevada who had previously had Cody Fajardo taking the snaps at quarterback decided to switch to Tyler Lantrip. Lantrip led the Wolfpack to a touchdown on the first drive of the fourth, as he found Via Taua out in the flats, and Taua took the ball 34 yards to the house for a Nevada touchdown, Nevada 20-7. Nevada tacked on another 15 points, while holding Air Force scoreless. The defense was led by Dontay Moch who added another two sacks, and now has seven for the year. The Wolfpack held the Falcons to only 149 yards of total offense, while Nevada was able to rack up 419 yards with 279 yards on the ground. The result was especially important to Nevada since OLB Byron Jones was visiting Reno. Jones is one of the most athletic available OLB recruits and as of now has Nevada at the top of the board. Jones said about the win: "Wow, the defense was awesome under Coach Kirkpatrick, I definitely wouldn't mind playing here." That's good news for the Wolfpack!

                Key Stats
                C. Kaepernick: 2/4 31 yds, 4 rushes 54 yds
                T. Lantrip: 4/6 70 yds TD
                V. Taua: 20 rushes 112 yds, 2 TDs, 5 rec 63 yds 1 TD

                I. Frey: 1 FR
                Drake: 2 FGs

                T. Jefferson: 3/4 35 yds, 8 rushes 14 yds
                A. Clark: 15 rushes 70 yds TD
                P. Ofili: 9 tkls
                P. Hennessey: 9 tkls

                Jeffries' Take

The defense really showed up today for the first time all year. They were flying around the ball and making plays, things you like to see from a good defense. Air Force isn't a juggernaut on offense, they're average, so we'll take this as a sign that our defense is starting to gel. Hopefully, we can make some strides again next week against Lousiana Monroe.

Nevada plays a bad host, pummels LMU 73-14

Lousiana-Monroe Coach Todd Berry was not a happy camper following his team's blowout loss to Nevada yesterday and had some choice words for Nevada's head coach Ernie Jeffries: "There was no need for the final score to be the way it was, I didn't see Nevada letting up on the gas pedal. They achieved what they wanted, to embarrass us." Coach Jeffries in response to Coach Todd Berry said this: "I didn't see an issue with what we did at the of the game. We were running the ball, letting the clock run out, it's not my fault if Todd hasn't taught his guys how to properly tackle." Nevada's ground game shredded the Warhawks defense for long gains and many first downs. Wolfpack ballcarriers accumulated over 350 yards on the ground adding to their already gaudy rushing stats to date. However, LMW believe it or not was actually the team to jump out to a lead first as a Vince Taua giveaway via the fumble, and a td return by A. Ibe a defensive lineman for the Warhawks gave LMU a quick 7-0 lead.

On the subsequent drive, the Wolfpack scored on a 1 yd td run by Taua to make it 7-7. They then proceeded to reel off 59 unanswered points on the arm of Tyler Lantrip, the feet of Vince Taua, and the back of the whole Nevada defense which did budge but never broke against the Warhawks. Nevada moves to 3-2, while Louisiana Monroe moves to 1-3 on the year.

                    Jeffries' Take

This was a really good tune-up performance for us as next week we get back into MWC play and have a tough road test at Colorado. I liked the way we were able to run the ball and control the game. Via has been steady all year and he'll get a lot of work next week, and hopefully our defense can bring it again for the third consecutive week.

                      Nevada outlasts Colorado in Boulder

Coach Ernie Jeffries expressed as much as he could throughout the week leading up to yesterday's game against Colorado how important it was to protect the ball and maintain field position in order to eliminate the always hostile Colorado student-body. His players took his advice and won the turnover battle yesterday, lost the field position battle at points, but ultimately outlasted Colorado in an entertaining game.

Rodney Stewart opened the scoring as he capped off an impressive game-opening drive by the Buffaloes with a 4 yd touchdown run. Nevada answered with a 2 yd touchdown pass to Mike Ball from Tyler Lantrip to tie things up at 7-7. Colorado again proceeded to drive down the field converting a couple third downs in route. Rodney Stewart looked to cap off the drive with a 20 yard gash up the middle but Marlon Johnson unloaded a big hit on Stewart stopping him short of his destination and also separating him from the ball, and Nevada would capitalize on the break as they recovered the ball. Colorado would stop the ensuing drive as Nevada was unable to convert a fourth and 2 in Colorado territory. The game would be a back and forth defensive affair, until Nevada got the ball with four to go in the second quarter and Tyler Lantrip led a successful drive into Colorado territory capping the drive off with another 2 yd td pass to Ball the fullback with 1:36 to go in the first half.

Colorado answered right back a couple plays later as Tyler Hansen recognized the Nevada blitz and found a wide open Devaughn Thornton across the middle who took the football 57 yards for a touchdown. Nevada not to be outdone answered immediately with a 94 yard kick return touchdown by do-it-all runningback Via Taua to take a 21-14 lead into halftime.

Colorado out of halftime with possession and did not waste an opportunity to tie the game as Rodney Stewart from his own territory broke off a 56 yard run and was able to score as Marlon Johnson this time was nowhere to be found. Nevada regained the lead in the beginning of the fourth when Vince Taua took a slip screen 30 yards down to Colorado's five yard line. A couple plays later, Lampford Mark was able to punch the football in on a 1 yd run to give Nevada the 28-21 lead. Back came Colorado again as they were able to get within the redzone. Tyler Hansen tried finding his tight end Deehan for a first down at the Nevada three, but Kaelin Burnett who was spelling Mose Denton at SS intercepted the pass and was tackled at his own one yard line. It was Burnett's 2nd interception on the year. After a two yard gain by Ball on first down, Vince Taua was able to reel off a 25 yarder for the Wolfpack. This sparked the offense and after a couple good gains on the ground by Mark and Taua, Cody Fajardo punched his touchdown ticket with a four yarder to make it 35-27. Colorado would make things interesting again as Hansen found Simmons for a 80 catch and run to make it 35-28 Nevada. But after the unsuccessful onside kick and without a timeout, Nevada was able to run out the clock and take a significant win back to Reno.

*Nevada improves to 4-2 on the year, and 2-0 in conference play. Colorado falls to 3-3 on the year, and 1-1 in conference play.

                      Jeffries' Take

We're going to need to win road games like this one if were going to compete for a MWC title. Again good things happen when you're able to run the ball successfully and win the turnover battle. I wouldn't say our defense played great, but they played well enough to win. Hopefully, we come out with the same vigor at home next week against Arizona State.
