Florida State pulls through late to hold off upstart Deacons

(Winston-Salem, North Carolina) - Just twenty seconds in and the game had it's first score, a huge touchdown rush by running back Josh Harris who followed his blockers closely. The 80 yard run sparked a 14 point first quarter for the Deacons whose next score would come on a short Knott run for a touchdown putting them up 14-0.

The second quarter brought back a little bit of sanity for Florida State fans who saw their team get beat in all facets of the game in the first quarter. Responding with a touchdown, the half would end with a touchdown lead in favor of the Deacons but it was clear which side the momentum had shifted to and it was abundantly clear that Wake Forest was in trouble.

The lack of Brandon Pendergrass caused a few issues, mainly Josh Harris was forced to rush more than typical without break. He was on the field much more often and left with a minor injury. Brendan Cross had issues of his own staying upright in the pocket against a Florida State defense that would accumulate five sacks in the game. One of the sacks knocked Cross out of the game, unraveling the Wake Forest squad that quickly would give up fourteen points.

By the end of the fourth quarter the offense had been beaten around by Florida State and they tried to move down field but the Seminoles held tough, showing who was the superior team. The game wasn't a blow out as predicted but if it hadn't been for a rare first quarter explosion this could've easily been a 3-34 game. The Deacons fall to 2-3 and will face the one loss Virginia Tech Hokies next week in Winston-Salem. The injury to Brendan was minor enough that he is expected to play for the Hokie game.

Virginia Tech slaughters Wake Forest, knocking out Harris in the process

(Winston-Salem, North Carolina) - The Deacons now head to Duke University following a beat down from Virginia Tech that lead many Deacon fans calling Virginia Tech "classless" after putting up twenty eight points in the final quarter of a game that seemed decided already. The score was actually somewhat close early on until the Hokies blew it wide open in the second half.

Critical errors and the inability to translate scoring opportunities into scores is what killed the Deacons and inevitably turned the game into the hands of Virginia Tech, including a big error when Michael Campanaro muffed the kick off and it was scooped up by a Virginia Tech gunner which quickly turned into a touchdown that safely gave Virginia Tech a 52 point game. It grew ugly fast and Brendan Cross was really only the bright spot of the offense.

In one of the better passing performances from Wake Forest this season, they lead up with 291 yards and Brandon Pendergrass had a solid game with 81 rushing yards but it was the lowest performance on the ground since the season opener. Brendan Cross was ineffective when it came to scrambling and running often times getting tripped up early in the run. This was a learning experience for the young offense which was humbled in every possible way on Saturday. None the less, this game drops the Deacons down to 2-4 and a sense of urgency kicks in. They would have to win 4 of 6 just to be bowl eligible. The schedule only gets slightly easier. Duke and Vanderbilt should be close but wins. Outside of that it is a toss up. Winning five of the next six would be the only way to guarantee a birth.

Lol, as a VT student I'm surprised the Hokies got the opportunity to run up the score, I can't remember the last time the offense could do that. Tough loss, but with Duke coming up I'm sure you can bounce back.

Duke finds a way through Wake Forest in a blowout

(Durham, North Carolina) - Coming into this game, no one expected a blow out, and even after the first quarter in a deadlocked 0-0 game, it would be Duke that would completely tear apart the Deacons. The first to draw blood was the Deacons in this rivalry game on a short field goal that gave them the lead. A Josh Snead touchdown reception from Sean Renfree put the Blue Devils up by a slim lead, the lead wouldn't hold. On a rare wildcat formation called by Tyler Starks, Chris Givens took a hand off 63 yards for a touchdown once again returning the lead to the Deacons. That lead would not hold as the Blue Devils would go for the jugular, once again it would be Josh Snead pulling in a 12 yard pass from Sean Renfree to give the go ahead score and the Blue Devils never looked back.

The third quarter they absolutely exploded, Sean Renfree tossed up two more touchdowns that increased the separation by 25 points, giving the Blue Devils a 35-10 lead that would seem to hold. His targeted receivers, Trezvent, Josh Snead (#3) and Branton, the longest of his touchdown strikes being for nine yards. The stadium was absolutely rocking at this point as the hometown Blue Devil squad was laying a beat down on the undermanned and seemingly dazed Wake Forest team.

Wake Forest would get a slim sign of life when Brendan Cross hit a streaking Michael Campanero for a huge sixty-two yard strike catching him in full stride as he high stepped into the end zone to make sure the crowd knew he put up a big touchdown. Duke after a few exchanges of possessions would respond on a short drive thanks to a long punt return that led to Josh Snead getting his fourth touchdown on the day, a one yard burst up the middle to extend the lead to 17-42.

Wake Forest would drive down field again thanks to an aerial barrage from young quarterback, Tanner Price. Ending the drive when he found Anthony Parker open on a deep slant. Parker would have to slip free from the safeties grasp but would manage to get into the end zone. 24-42. The final score of the game when Duke decided to drive downfield again, turning a time killing drive into a scoring one when Josh Snead got his fifth touchdown of the game on a eight yard pitch to the right side.

The Demon Deacons fell to 2-5 and a dismal 1-4 in the Atlantic Coast Conference while the Blue Devils improve to a 4-3 mark and pick up their first in conference victory on the shoulders of Josh Snead whom turned his play up to a whole different level to turn this game into a rout. On the flip side, Brendan Cross deserves some recognition for his 360 passing yard performance that included a pair of touchdown passes. Without him playing, this game could've been an absolute rout and a shut out would've been very possible. Josh Harris was ineffective on the ground going 8 rushes for only five yards, most of those early in the game.

The Deacons will face the one loss North Carolina Tarheels in their final rivalry game of the season. The Deacons would have to win out to guarantee a bowl birth and can only lose one more and be able to be bowl eligible. With matchups against the Tarheels, Fighting Irish and the Clemson Tigers, three matchups that the Deacons will need to at least go 2-1 in, just to become bowl eligible. That doesn't include matchups against Maryland and Vanderbilt that could be more of a trap game especially after seeing this blow out loss.

Re: Leading the way through the new age of College Football {--

Potent offense is the key in a big upset over rival UNC

The defense is what many consider to be the key for the Tarheels season, where they go, the team goes with it. Today was no different and when it came down to it, the Deacons were the ones that could put on a better offensive show than the Tarheels could, embarrassing a defense that some even consider to be towards the top in the NCAA

The game was tight throughout, neither team gained much of an edge, North Carolina breaking out first with a two yard touchdown run on a tiring Deacon defense. The Deacons would respond on the following drive however when running back Josh Harris after being contained so badly against the Blue Devils broke out for a huge 68 yard rush thanks to some key blocking up front. The quarter would be whistled dead at a 7-7 deadlock.

The second quarter did little to calm Tarheel fans down who were starting to fear an upset of their team whom only had lost one game thus far (a double digit loss to Miami). Even though the Deacons were coming off a bad loss and the Tarheels a thirty-seven point victory over the Clemson Tigers. Momentum had seemed to be in favor of the Tarheels, yet that would be far from the case as they hit the brick wall of Wake Forest, Wake Forest jumping out to a lead midway through the second quarter on a Brendan Cross three yard scramble.

The Tarheels would respond however, a Houston run for his second touchdown of the game would tie the game back up and with a minute left in the half, North Carolina converted a 27 yard field goal giving them the lead for the time being as the Tarheels started to show some hopes of pulling away. Until the extremely successful Wake Forest two minute offense kicked in and drove downfield, Newman knocking in a field goal from thirty yards out to leave the game tied as the half expired.

"Persevere, we are in this. This is our game to win. We have them on the ropes and they are trying to regain their stance. Hit them with everything we got. We are going to show them how Wake Forest plays football. We can win this!" Yelled an excited Jim Grobe in the locker room keeping the emotion high.

That speech didn't seem to hit home when the Tarheels came out of the tunnel electrified and turned an opening possession into killing half of the quarter and ending with a touchdown pass of 24 yards. Josh Harris once again killed all momentum for the Tarheels, another huge seventy-two yard run in a high yardage day for the back that gave the Deacons a dead lock with the favored Tarheels yet again. 24-24. The Deacons would get the ball back quick and before the third quarter could end, Newman knocked in a thirty yard field goal to make it a 27-24 game.

Out came the teams for the fourth quarter and both came hitting like a heavyweight bout. Neither team doing much offensively and the defenses taking the spotlight, a 27-24 lead that the Deacons would finally extend into a 30-24 lead on another field goal. The Tarheels however would find a way to qwell the storm and cause some reason for concern for the Deacons after a solid drive resulted in a 2 yard run that gave the Tarheels a 30-31 lead after the extra point converted. The Deacons would struggle at first, but after a Brendan Cross drop back on third and long hit Terence Davis for a huge completion of 32 yards that took them over midfield.

That would be all the Deacons would need, with a minute and a half, they ran an uptempo gronud game that truely beat down the Tarheels, and ran down the clock. With six seconds left in the game, the Deacons would hit the go ahead field goal making it a 33-31 game. The kickoff was returned to the twenty-seven and on the following play, the Wake Forest defense would get into the backfield getting a huge sack to end the game.

Strong start, but weak finish has Wake Forest falling apart in overtime

(Winston-Salem, North Carolina) - Brendan Cross had a 281 passing yard, three touchdown no interception performance, yet it wouldn't be enough to keep his team on top against the school from South Bend. Dayne Crist outperformed his rival under center with a 331 passing yard performance notching three touchdowns with that as well. The biggest statline of the night would however belong to Chris Givens, a man proving himself to be a deep threat. Givens would catch four balls totalling 163 yards and a pair of touchdowns leading the Deacons against the Irish in this one.

Wake Forest errupted to a 17-0 lead over the Fighting Irish through the first half of the second quarter thanks to a staunt defensive unit mixed with an offensive unit armed with cohesion. Everything worked, Cameron Ford scoring first on a two yard pass from Brendan Cross to pull them up to 10-0, and on the following drive, Chris Givens would beat his corner and catch a beautiful rocket pass running into the end zone for his first of two touchdowns. The Irish would manage to put points on the board before the half, on a Dayne Crist pass for the eighteen yard score to bring it back to a two possession game.

Little was done for the Irish in the third quarter when all they would manage to do is knock in a field goal, and the Wake Forest offensive unit lost the cohesion that had them gelling through the first half preventing this one from turning into a rout, the game now a one possession game.

Wake Forest attempted a knock out punch, when once again David Givens beat his man this time on a slant and would go most of the field, seventy-five yards for the two touchdown lead. It was the defenses game to lose. Problem is, this is the Wake Forest defense.

Dayne Crist led his team downfield quickly bringing the game back down to a one possession game with a 10 yard pass. Than after a long Wake Forest drive would finally stall, out came Notre Dame who smoothly drove downfield, punching the ball into the end zone with under a minute left to make it a 24-24 game.

Wake Forest would try to score but would be stopped just shy of field goal range for Newman, leading to overtime where the toss was won by Notre Dame. The Deacons wouldn't even get a first down. Stopped on all three tries, Newman came out and stumbled on the kick, slicing it to the right, Notre Dame only needed a field goal to win.

The offense sliced through Wake Forest and left them helpless, picking up fifteen yards on the first play and running the ball down late in the game they would punch it in on third and goal from three yards out as the Irish swarmed their running back, Wood whom crossed the plane for the game winning score. Once again the Deacons fall short of an upset in overtime. The Deacons fall to 3-6 and will have to win out against Clemson, Maryland and Vanderbilt in order to even be bowl eligible.

Clemson fires out of the gates and outlasts Wake Forest

(Clemson, South Carolina) This loss guarantees the Deacons will only be playing two more games. The Deacons fall to 3-7 and are elminated from any hopes of making a bowl game after the 24-35 loss. "It's disappointing, I was hoping for us to pull through, our guys have talent we just couldn't produce when we needed to. It's not where I hoped to be but we still need to finish strong." Spoke Head Coach Jim Grobes after the game.

The Deacons were at a loss early in this game as the offense couldn't get anything going, shut out through the first quarter yet allowed for two quick Clemson touchdowns in the final two minutes of the quarter as the Tigers drove down field quickly, Boyd hooking up with Hopkins in two consecutive touchdown scoring drives, one from five yards out, the other from nine, giving the Tigers a 0-14 lead heading into the second.

The Deacons showed a lot of passion in the second quarter, coming out firing despite losing quarterback, Brendan Cross for the game. Ted Stachitas would hook up with Chris Givens on a five yard out route that would turn into a fifteen yard touchdown play bringing it to a seven point game. Clemson would respond however, on a long drive that would end just before two minutes with a goal line run from Ellington making it a 7-21 game. The Deacons would fire up though, charging down field and converting a touchdown on a nine yard pass to Matt James 14-21. An interception on the following drive gave the ball to the Deacons in great position. They took a shot downfield but it would be incomplete, Newman coming in and knocking through a thirty-four yard field goal. 17-21.

No team would make any scores in the third quarter, as both offenses struggled. Ted Stachitas would be the one breaking the dead lock, when he drove the team downfield early in the fourth and would take off for the end zone when his passing options collapsed. He would be tackled into the end zone but Wake Forest would have the lead, at least momentarily. 24-21. The Tigers would slowly drive downfield and on third and goal, Boyd would run a QB sneak, falling forward into the end zone for the lead. 24-28. After a four and out, the Tigers put the nail in the coffin, driving down field quickly and putting the final ounce of separation between the teams on a sixteen yard pass from Boyd to Jones thatwould put them up by eleven, with under two minutes to go, the Deacons wouldn't muster a drive that would accomplish anything and the Tigers walk away at .500, while the Deacons fall to 3-7 and (2-5) in conference.

The Deacons will be playing ranked and division leading Maryland next week before they close out the season at home against Vanderbilt.

Deacons outlast #19 Maryland in offensive showdown

(Winston-Salem, North Carolina) - The Terrapins made the trip from Maryland only to be shown up on the national stage by a team widely considered inferior. The Demon Deacons outlasted the terrapins 49-42 in a huge offensive showing.

Neither team had a defense that seemed capable of stopping the opposition. The occasional stop was evident but it wasn't pretty. Wake Forest got on the board first with a long drive ending in a field goal giving them a slim lead that would be erased on a fast Maryland drive moving downfield and ending on a Moore goal line run.

The second quarter was when the game started to be blown wide open, Wake forest quick on the attack with Brendan Cross driving his squad down field, ending the drive with a run up the middle from seven yards out giving the Deacons the lead. The Terapins would respond, driving downfield with the same deadly efficiency they had with their previous scoring drive and would retake the lead 10-14 on a one yard pass from O'Brien to McCree.

The defense would step up and get a stop, giving the ball back to the Terps who drove downfield quickly again, once again scoring on a one yard run this one from Maggett. 21-10, Wake Forest would manage to get another score before th ehalf, running the ball upfield between a pass and running attack that ended with Josh Harris on a seven yard pitchout for the score.

Another back and fourth battle in the third with both teams getting a pair of touchdowns, Wake Forest drawing blood first when Brendan Cross hit Denny Dembry on a deep slant and turned upfield scoring from twenty-three yards out making it 24-21. Yet again however the Terps would score twice consecutively, the first coming on a eleven yard pass to McCree and the second in the final minutes of the quarter on a huge sixty yard pass to Maggett. Wake would keep it close though, managing to get downfield yet again and scoring on a twenty-six yard run from a hand off up the middle with Josh Harris.

The fourth quarter came aronud, the Deacons down 31-35 and their offense needed to turn it up. They would, some hope seemed loss when the Terps drove back the tired and beaten Deacon defense en rout to a one yard run from Adams to put them up at 31-42.

The Deacons recovered fast. On their following drive with Brendan Cross leading his team downfield yet againand managing to hit Tight End Anthony Parker for a twenty seven yard pass. Josh Harris took a hand off up the middle to convert the two point conversion making it a 39-42 game and only needing a field goal. The Terps came out and were stuffed on the run giving the Deacons the ball back with a minute left. It took one play, Michael Campanaro in the flat would catch the ball and follow his blockers leading into a sixty one yard touchdown pass that gave the Deacons the lead. 46-42.

The following Terrapin drive, they would fumble the ball on first down and after kneeling the ball, Jim Grobe decided to run the score somewhat and kick the field goal as time expired, Wake Forest improving to 4-7 after the 49-42 victory over the Terapins.

Brendan Cross had a pitiful completion percentage (sub 50%) but his passes were huge throwing for over three hundred yards and tossing up a triplet of touchdowns. Josh Harris added 168 yards on the ground off of thirty two carries getting into the end zone twice.

Michael Campanero broke one hundred receiving yards in the game off of five receptions including the touchdown grab that would win the game for the Deacons.

The Deacons (4-7) will face the Vanderbilt Commodores (4-7) next week in the final game of the season. The Deacons are elminated from bowl eligiblity and are in fifthfor their division (only better than North Carolina State whom finished 2-6 in conference)

Snowy senior day ends in victory for Wake Forest

After the joke of a defensive showing last week, Wake Forest should've done some work on their defense, but it came out just as flawed as it had against Maryland managing to surrender forty one points to Vanderbilt. Luckily for the defense, the offense bailed them out with a fifty five point performance.

Brendan Cross completion column was in the single digits, Josh Harris had 148 yards and a pair of touchdowns, but the truth was, the offense was always placed in good field position thanks in large to special teams and the occasional solid stand by the Deacons defense.

Brendan Cross finished 9-15 for 257 yards and three touchdowns, tossing a lone interception as well in the end zone. His 60% completion percentage is the highest all season for him. Cross was never even sacked in this game. He also added 46 yards on the ground off of five attempts.

Josh Harris had less of a flashy game, gaining 148 yards off of 26 carries (5.6 YPC) but his presence was definitely felt. Denny Dembry was a true force on the aerial attack amassing 154 yards to lead the team in yardage.

On the flipside, senior Quarterback Larry Smith of Vanderbilt threw 28-44 for 414 Passing yards and four touchdowns with no interceptions leaving many concerned about the secondary especially for next year. With Wide Receiver John Cole amassing 137 yards off of seven catches and scoring three times.

The game was extremely close through the first half with Wake Forest holdinga slim lead at 27-21 (missed an XP), and they would continue to hold the lead at the end of the half at 34-31. The second half was when the Commodores seemed to run out of gas. Being outscored 21-10 as the Deacons whom already had the lead extended to an easy victory.

The Deacons improve to 5-7 in a disappointing bowless year and finish towards the bottom of the ACC. However offensive coordinator Tyler Starks seems to be a hot commodity this offseason and could be coaching elsewhere come this spring. The Deacons were without Tanner Price for the majority of the season with Halfback Jeff Smith and Wide Receiver Chris Givens missing extended playing time as well.

Breaking News: Tyler Starks announces resignation from Wake Forest

Just a year after having one of the most successful offensive seasons in Wake Forest recent history including Jeff Smith breaking a school rushing record, the coordinator has taken his leave. Handing in his papers early this week he left a short statement filled with the common thank yous and good wishes. That was shocking at first, but what brought the news overboard? He had moved up the coaching chain. No longer is he going to be the offensive coordinator. This week, he signed a deal with the Tulane Green Wave for one year that he hopes will be very lucrative.

"Tulane has history and they've produced NFL caliber prospects. They had a rough season a year ago, but I believe full-heartedly that I can help turn this team around. I cannot understate how exciting of an opportunity this is for me. It's new and it's nice to be back at the helm. I wish Jim [Grobe] the best of luck at Wake Forest. They have a group of guys I could only wish to bring to Tulane. I leave Winston-Salem with a heavy heart, but I have no doubt in my mind that they can fully compete in the ACC next year. The ground work is there, they just need to maintain it. Which I fully believe they can do." Spoke Tyler Starks.

The Deacons were quick to file in a replacement, hiring ex-Kansas coach, Gil Turner whom was fired after an unsuccessful season in Kansas. "I have a solid unit in place, we are a team on the rise. The fans are great and the field is terrific. Why anyone would want to leave this place is beyond me." Spoke an excited Gill in the accompanying press conference.
