Re: When the Defense Roars: Missouri Tigers Dynasty

    Halloween Weekend Brings Few Surprises
Ohio State unanimous #1, Missouri solid #2

Ohio State needed a 21 point fourth quarter, including a hail mary on 4th and 11 with 27 seconds left to tie the game, then won after a fumble was scooped up and returned for a touchdown with 2 seconds left. Their 38-31 victory over #9 Wisconsin was enough to boost them to #1 in all the major polls, especially after Missouri clawed past unranked Kansas State 41-38.

Air Force, Nevada, Kansas, and Georgia Tech all remained undefeated, and all rose some in the standings. Non-AQ's Middle Tennessee State and Ohio, both win a lone loss to current #2 Missouri, are slowly rising, and hope to gain the automatic berth for being the highest ranked non AQ providing they are in the top 12 of the final BCS standings or ranked in the top 16 and above one AQ champion. Currently no Big East teams are ranked.

Tigers to enjoy bye week, several things to watch this weekend

The #2 Missouri Tigers take a break this weekend entirely.

The #1 Ohio State Buckeyes (8-0, 5-0) take a break from tough opponents with a matchup against Indiana (1-7, 0-5), a team they have beaten 20 straight times, and have not lost to since 1988, a run of 22 games without a loss.

#3 Kansas also has a bye week.

#4 Georgia Tech (8-0, 5-0) hosts Duke (4-4, 3-2). Duke has only lost in conference to ranked Miami and ranked Virginia Tech.

      #5 LSU (7-1) hosts Alabama (4-3).

      #6 Boise State (7-1, 4-1) plays at Wyoming (3-5, 2-3)

      #7 Utah (7-1, 4-1) travels to #19 USC (6-3)

#8 Michigan State (6-2) travels to Nebraska (4-4)

      #9 Miami (7-2) travels to #23 Virginia Tech (5-3)

      #10 Oregon (5-3) goes to #24 Stanford (7-2)

#11 Air Force (8-0, 6-0) hosts Army (4-3, 0-0) in an Armed Forces Matchup

#18 Nevada (9-0, 6-0) has the week off.

All in all nothing major is occurring this week, so next weeks rankings should be fairly similar.

Missouri has 7 verbal commits so far, 6 of them 5*

The Missouri Tigers recruiting class of 2015 is shaping up nicely. So far they have 7 verbal commits, 6 of them 5-stars. 5 of those commits are wide receivers, but early reports suggest two of them will be converted into safeties next season due to great awareness that suggests they will be great in the defensive position.

LSU and Michigan State fall in upsets

3#5 LSU (7-2) and #8 Michigan State (6-3) were supposed to handle their divisional rivals. Apparently not, as Alabama (5-3) and Nebraska (5-4) handled their business and knocked off a pair of top 10 teams over the weekend. The weekend was looking to be quiet as there was only one top 25 matchup in the top 10 (#10 Oregon vs #24 Stanford) but with those two upsets it kept the weekend lively.

Last year this matchup was two unbeaten top 10 teams.
            This year it's #2 vs #11, 9-0 vs 6-4.
Arkansas can beat Missouri though, they have a hurry up spread attack with great receivers. They score well, quickly, and will provide a great test. Missouri is without their two best running backs, and will have to go with untested and unproven freshmen in starting roles.

B Mayes will provide carries in the fullback position, but honestly Missouri is in trouble at the running back spot. Their passing game is luckily going up against the worst pass defense in the nation, but their defense is going up against one of the best passing attacks ever. The Razorbacks love to air it out, and this will be one of the biggest tests the Tigers will have faced all year.

Missouri is still the favorite, but not by nearly as large of a margin as one might guess based upon the records. Missouri 50, Arkansas 47 is the early line.

Other top 10 vs top 25 action:
            #7 Miami (8-2) vs #24 Florida State (7-2)

Re: When the Defense Roars: Missouri Tigers Dynasty

              #11 Arkansas upsets #2 Missouri

#11 beating #2 might not sound like an upset. A #11 that is 6-4, has lost 4 conference games, and #2 is 9-0 and has only had two close games. Now thats an upset.

Missouri entered with a 5-2 record against Arkansas, a 3 game winning streak in the budding rivalry, and one of the top teams in the nation. Last year Arkansas was given a chance against Missouri and routed when it was undefeated vs undefeated. Not the case, and again predictions were wrong.

Missouri and Arkansas came out very evenly matched, and it showed as the game was 10-7 with the edge to Missouri after one period, not 21-7 like some feared. T Williams was off his game a little, even being intercepted twice in the first quarter, but the Razorbacks held strong.

              B. Moore getting his first of two interceptions on the day

After a T. Williams pass found D. McDonald all alone in the endzone and the PAT forced a 17-17 tie with just over 6 minutes left in the first half, the Razorbacks never trailed.

The Razorbacks were ahead 24-17 and going for another when K. Hall picked off the ball at the goal line and returned in 100 yards to make it 24-24, seemingly gaining momentum for the Tigers!

              K. Hall tied the game and seemingly shifted momentum

The halftime margin was 27-24 for the Razorbacks thanks to a last second field goal, and the game stayed that way. The Tiger battled back from a 41-24 deficit to make it 41-38 with 8 minutes left in the game. That was it for the Tigers, and the Razorbacks took a 48-38 lead. The game was sealed when Nick Bailey fumbled the ball in the endzone, and it was jumped on by D. Randall, making it a 3 score game, 55-38. The Tigers went four and out, and the game ended with Arkansas kneeling down and running out the clock.

For Razorback fans J. Dawson is their new hero

Re: When the Defense Roars: Missouri Tigers Dynasty

So I originally played the game last night and lost 73-23. I saved the game and simmed ahead to conference championship weekend, or so I thought to see what the end of the season would look like (it was surprising, I'll share later.)

Anyway, I apparently "saved" after week 15, not after the game. I always keep two copies of the dynasty, in case something goes hinky last it has in the past, so I played the game again. Lost again, tried to win, but they kicked my butt again.

Perhaps more frustrating than last night's 73-23 shellacking. I dropped to #10 and they jumped to #8 when I simmed ahead last time, so I figure it will happen again.

Re: When the Defense Roars: Missouri Tigers Dynasty

Tigers loss opens the door for a possible ACC/Big 10 title game, or even a MWC team

With the #2 Missouri Tigers losing to Arkansas, it opens the door for Missouri to defeat Kansas in two weeks and leave the Big XII without a clear contender to the BCS NC. If any of the five remaining teams left has their destiny in their own hands it is easily the Kansas Jayhawks and the Ohio State Buckeyes.

The Buckeyes are 10-0 and don't have any major tests left before conference championship weekend. The Jayhawks have to fend off pesky in-state rival Kansas State, and bitter border rival Missouri to finish undefeated.

Georgia Tech (10-0) is the first choice to replace either team should GT stay perfect and one of the top two stumble. If two of the top three stumble, or even if they don't, the MWC champion could possibly get a boost from a top 5 matchup in the final game of the season, and slip into the BCS Title game.

In a bit of a controversy, Air Force is ranked below Boise State despite being the Broncos lone loss this season, and the Falcons not losing yet.
Nevada and Boise State face off this weekend for the MWC Mountain Division, so whoever wins that game will play Air Force who will most likely be 12-0, in the MWC Title game. Nevada has the toughest road left in the MWC, they must play Boise State and #26 Houston to finish their season.

                    Game Notes
Pick any category you want and the Missouri Tigers are superior to the Iowa State Cyclones. Even in Pass defense their ranking of 111th beats ISU's of 118.

Now, imagine that dominance, with their ownership of this rivalry, and combine it with the anger at losing their undefeated season, which would have been only the second one ever in Missouri Tiger history. The Tigers are angry, mad, and ready to take it out on anyone in sight. Unfortunately for the Cyclones they honestly thought they had a chance to upset the Tigers and Jayhawks and win the Big XII North, but after they got beat down by the Jayhawks last week they lost some confidence, and it's not going to be any easier against the Tigers.

The score might not be 50-10, the Tigers lack of extreme depth is beginning to show as they have lost several players due to injury, and a few more are suspended. There is also the fact Nick Bailey might be suffering from concussion syndrome. If so they will not have anyone over a sophomore in a quarter or half-back role playing against ISU.

The Tigers defense is ready to step up, they have been studying extra film voluntarily after letting the Razorbacks gain 48 on their defense. The Razorbacks offense is second only to the Kansas Jayhawks offense in Division 1-FBS this year. If the Tigers beat ISU, and Jayhawks thump the Wildcats, next weekend's showdown will show if they got better against elite passing attacks.

Ouch, tough loss. Good luck against Iowa State, I'm sure you'll bounce back.

Helpless Cyclones fall to #8 Tigers 43-0

Imagine a team, that was 4 games away from a guaranteed shot at the national championship, losing to a team that most called overrated. Now imagine being their next opponent.

Iowa State had no chance, and didn't even put up a fight. The 3rd string cleaned up almost the entire second half, and the Tigers routed the Cyclones 43-0 as they tuned up for their matchup with #1 Kansas (11-0) next week.

                        Missouri POTG:
                        N. Bailey was 10 of 19 for 163 yards, 3 TD, and was sacked once.
                        J. Ross had 23 carries for 108 yards, and 1 TD
                        D. Washington had 3 tackles, and 2 INT
                        M. Smith had 5 catches for 83 yards and 3 TD

Things get interesting at the end of the season, 5 undefeated teams remain

Five teams are still undefeated with just 2 games at most remaining for each team.
Ohio State, Kansas, and Georgia Tech all take their top 3 ranking and 11-0 records into games with bitter rivals. Kansas will play at #7 Missouri (10-1) and Ohio State will play at #16 Michigan (7-4). Georgia Tech is primed to be the only team not at risk of losing, hosting Georgia (6-5).

Nevada pulled an upset, beating #5 Boise State 49-46 in overtime after falling behind 35-0 after one quarter. Nevada battled back and won the close game, and Boise State will have to settle for most likely a Las Vegas Bowl bid.

On the BCS front both Ohio and Middle Tennessee State are top 16, and ahead of Big East leaders SMU (8-2, 4-1) and Temple (6-4, 4-2). SMU and Temple play each other December 5th to determine the Big East Champion.

If Ohio and MTSU don't drop a game watch to see if Ohio can leap MTSU based off a strong close in a surprisingly stronger than expected MAC.

                            Game Notes
In one of the closest rivalries in all college football, where Missouri holds the edge 58-57 in wins, Kansas and Missouri lock up once again with huge national implications.

In 2006, 2008, 2009, and 2010 the Border War meant little to a national audience. But 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 twice, and now 2015 have all had national implications. Last year the teams met twice for the first time ever, and it cost Kansas a shot at the national title, and gave Missouri the resume boost they needed to make their first ever BCS Title game.

Kansas has the most prolific passing attack in the nation, and will live and die by the pass. Expect Missouri to blitz every down, Cunningham has to be forced to pass or he will wait for the opening.

Missouri will have to run the ball and keep the Jayhawks defense on the field. Unfortunately they are pretty much without any known backs, although J. Ross has done a fine job so far. Luckily Nick Harris, the redshirt senior, has been able to come back and play, as the concussion scare was just a scare.

Missouri might upset Kansas, but there are no redo's this year. It's Kansas, Missouri, 2015 Border War, and whoever wins plays Baylor in two weeks for the Big XII Title. For the Jayhawks if they win, they face a team they killed a few weeks back, and almost a certainty of returning to the BCS Championship where they claimed their first NCAA Football National Championship ever 2 years ago.

Missouri needs help, but if they beat Kansas they could backdoor their way into the BCS Championship Game also.

Projection: Kansas 70, Missouri 23. Kansas's offense makes Arkansas's look like cheerleaders trying to do cage fighting. Missouri has no chance to keep up if their defense doesn't hold, and they haven't held that well all year.

Ohio State and Georgia Tech upset in early Saturday Action

The noon games just ended, and man it's a week that will go down in history.
#1 Ohio State just lost a heart breaker to arch rival Michigan, dropping a 38-36 triple overtime decision when they failed to gain a 2pt conversion.

Meanwhile Georgia Tech lost to arch rival Georgia 30-20.

Provided Air Force and Nevada win today, one of them will play for the BCS National Championship.

Also the Kansas/Missouri winner will be the front runner for the other 1/2 of the title game. Although #4 Utah might have something to say about that, depending upon if they defeat BYU today and if they win the Pac-12 Title.

Missouri executes Kansas's BCS Title Chances 53-10

Say what you will about the Big XII, but the last few years it has always provided a legit BCS Title threat, and it's won the last two national championships.

Now, provided the entire system doesn't crash, that streak is in jeopardy. The 8th ranked Tigers from Missouri hosted the #2 Kansas Jayhawks in the late afternoon showdown. Going in Kansas knew #1 Ohio State and #3 Georgia Tech had both fallen, and they needed to be prepared. Also, they knew if they could beat Missouri and then win the Big XII Championship they were going to the BCS Title game for sure.

The game started off as a typical battle between two behemoths does, a slow feeling out period. Kansas's passing attack was negated by the snow on the ground, as Cummings slipped twice in the first quarter. The Tigers did what they do best, running the ball down the throat of the Jayhawks and relying on M. Coleman to nail a pair of field goals from 30 and 42 yards respectively to gain a 6-0 lead.

                                A. Pierson got the Jayhawks onto the scoreboard with a 10 yard run at the end of the first, making it 7-6 Jayhawks after one stanza.

                                #2 Kansas (11-0) 7
                                #8 Missouri (10-1) 6

Missouri, mad that once again their shutout was taken away from them, rallied the troops. The offense scored on a 3 yard run by Harrell, and then K. Hall came up with a huge interception in the endzone to prevent Kansas from tying the game at 13 all.

                                K. Hall intercepted Cummings to prevent a Jayhawk touchdown

On the very next play A. Harrell wiped David Steele's name from the record book for the longest run ever, going 96 yards, coast to coast, to make it 20-7 Tigers.

Steele who? Harrell gets his name in the record book.

Missouri added a sweet 1 yard pass to J. Ross from Bailey after Bailey slipped on the snow, and a field goal later the Tigers held a nice 29-7 lead at halftime.

                                #8 Missouri (10-1) 29

The Jayhawk defense held for the third period, but the Tigers did also, and the Jayhawks only managed to close by a field goal.

                                #8 Missouri (10-1) 29

Missouri went crazy in the fourth quarter, picking off Cummings on 4 straight plays. Cummings would finish with 7 total interceptions and he was also sacked 3 times. Missouri capitalized big time and ran up the score, giving the Jayhawks a big old fashioned beatdown.

                                #2 Kansas (11-0) 10
                                #8 Missouri (10-1) 53

Cummings nearly doubled his INT for the season, going from 8 to 15 in this game

Missouri now hopes that with a win in the Big XII title game they can leapfrog into the BCS Title game. There is a lot more hope now then there was a few weeks ago after the loss to Arkansas.
