A Titanic Win
The surprising Cincinnati Bengals are beginning to believe in themselves, even if nobody else does. Many expected Chris Johnson to humble the Bengals in manner similar to what Maurice Jones-Drew did in Cincinnati’s lone loss of the season. But CJ2K was held to a mere 66 yards with a 3.1 average, and the Bengals put a 39-3 beat-down on the Tennessee Titans, keeping their opponent out of the end zone for the second consecutive week. The only negativity from the Cincinnati point of view was further evidence that Cedric Benson came into the season with only half a tank of gas, but Benson’s unproductivity was offset by Bernard Scott and Cedric Peerman.
“Don’t forget that we’re only two season removed from a division title,” said Cincinnati head coach Marvin Lewis in his post-game commentary. “Last year was an aberration, and the factors that contributed to it no longer exist.”
At the 4:01 mark of the first quarter, after the teams had exchanged field goals, a Kyle Huber punt was downed at the 1. Rey Maualuga stripped Johnson and Robert Geathers recovered the ball at the 5. After an incomplete pass, Andy Dalton fired a touchdown bullet to A.J. Green on second down. With half a minute left before the intermission, Dalton scrambled 6 yards to put the Bengals up 20-3, after which the Titans simply appeared to quit.
Cedric Peerman lost a fumble on his first carry of the season, but no harm was done and he made up for it on his next attempt, closing the third quarter with a 76 yard touchdown scamper. After Carlos Dunlap sacked Matt Hasselbeck for a safety, Cincy took the free kick and drove to a 5 yard run by Bernard Scott with 8:10 to go. Mike Nugent accounted for the final tally by tacking on a field goal after the two minute warning.
