Big ben is still a week away, but this time the Steelers will have capable backup Charlie Batch under center, and LaMarr Woodley is back in the defensive lineup. The Bengals 2009 sweep of the Steelers was the first since 1998. Will they have to wait as long for another?

Red Rifle Shoot Blanks, Stillers Restore Balance To The Force, 20-16

On a cold and wet December day in the hostile confines of Heinz Field, Andy "The Red Rifle" Dalton "achieved" some dubious career firsts. First game completing fewer than 50% of his passes. First time throwing more interceptions than touchdowns (made a lot easier to do with zero TD's). First multi-interception game. Dalton went into the Cincinnati Bengals' divisional clash with the Pittsburgh Steelers with only two interceptions. He threw that many to Troy Polamalu in the Bengals' fourth quarter collapse. There had been an earlier pick thrown to Ryan Clark, and with a fumble thrown in for good measure, Dalton was responsible for all four of Cincinnati's turnovers. As a consequence of Dalton's woes, the broom the Bengals took to Pittsburgh got snapped in two and the handle got inserted into place where the sun don't shine.

One bright spot for the Bengals was the resurgence of Cedric Benson, who seems to have found a second wind. With 9:57 left in the half and on the first play after a punt, Benson set a franchise record with a 99 yard touchdown run that gave Cincinnati a 10-7 lead. That score held up until halftime, after which the Bengals opened the second half by driving to a 43 yard Mike Nugent field goal. With another Nugent kick, the Bengals carried a 16-7 lead into the final frame. Charlie Batch found Emmanuel Sanders for an 8 yard touchdown with 10:53 to go. Polamalu's first interception came with seven and a half minutes to play, and his 16 yard return put the ball at the Cincinnati 45. Rashard Mendenhall ripped off chunks of yardage- 10, 15 and 12, and while he was taking a breather, Isaac Redman scored from 4 yards out to put Pittsburgh in the lead. In the following series, James Harrison recovered a sack-fumble combo, and Casey Hampton literally smothered the ball at he Bengal 29. A sack by Reggie Nelson pushed the Steelers back, and right after the two minute warning Shaun Suisham missed a 54 yard field goal attempt. Polamalu's second pick came two plays later, and the Stillers ran out the clock.

With their record improved to 8-4 and Big Ben due to return to action next week, the Steelers are poised to make a run at the Bengals, who must regroup for a home clash with the AFC South-leading Houston Texans.

Will the worst game of his brief career get to the Red Rifle's head, or will he bounce back? The outcome of this game most likely hinges on the answer to that question.

Red Rifle Reloads, Guns Down Texans

It’s going to take more than one bad game to keep Andy Dalton down. A week after the worst game of his career, the Red Rifle rebounded to go 19-of-30 for 247 yards, firing 3 touchdown passes to lead the Cincinnati Bengals past the visiting Houston Texans, 27-16. Dalton is currently on pace to surpass three records for first-year passers- Sam Bradford’s completions of a year ago, Big Ben’s completion percentage, and the lowest interception percentage set by Charlie Batch in 1998. The ginger-haired rookie wasn’t the only one to shine in Cincy’s 11th victory of 2011. Dalton’s favorite target, A.J. Green, hauled in two of those touchdown passes, and the revitalized Cedric Benson rushed for 116 yards on 24 touches.

Bengals offensive coordinator Jay Gruden said after the game that he felt it was important to send Dalton out firing, and on the first play from scrimmage, Dalton executed a perfect play-fake and zipped a 13 yard completion to rookie tight end Colin Cochart. All who saw that could instantly tell that all was well with the Red Rifle. On the next play Dalton’s second pass went to fullback Chris Pressley for 15 yards, but passes three and four were incomplete and the drive bogged down after crossing midfield. Kyle Huber punted out of bounds a the 5, and the Texans went three and out. On the first play after the punt, Dalton hooked up with Jermaine Gresham for a 35 yard score. Neil Rackers got the Texans on the board with a 33 yard boot on the final play of the first quarter, with with 4:08 left in the half, Dalton hit Green in stride along the sideline for a 38 yard TD. Houston went three and out again, and thanks to a holding call on the kickoff return, punted out of the end zone for a second time. The Bengals converted the short field into a 52 yard Mike Nugent field goal and a 17-3 lead. Three plays and another punt later, Cincinnati was going for the jugular, but ended up with Nugent hooking a 44 yard try to the left with 2 ticks to go before the break.

In the teams’ first possessions of the second half, the Texans were forced to punt, while Dalton connected with Green again on a 28 yard all-in-the-air strike. In Houston’s next series, a false start backed the Texans out of a 51 yard field attempt and into a punt. With 6:31 left in the game and two plays from scrimmage after a 48 yard Rackers field goal had cut Cincinnati’s lead to 24-13, former Bengal Jonathan Joseph was all over a wide receiver screen intended for Jerome Simpson and picked Dalton off at the Cincy 30. The Bengal defense minimized the damage by limiting the Texans to a 47 yard field goal, but Houston was now a touchdown and a two point conversion away from tying the game. The Texans kicked away, trusting a defense that had kept the Bengals in check since their early third quarter score, but the two minute warning found Cincinnati at the Houston 36. Nugent gave the Bengals some breathing room with a 44-yarder with 1:23 to go, and the game ended with an incomplete Hail Mary.

The loss drops the Texans to 8-5 and puts the Manningless Colts, also now 8-5, surprisingly in the thick of the AFC South race.
