Re: Rebuilding the Fear - Oakland Raiders M13 CCM

    Schumacher's First Win
    Rookie QB, Offense Look Impressive.
Raiders Handle Patriots in 36-16 Victory.

Wade Schumacher came out hyped up and gunning, and he looked like a veteran in the early going of his first ever regular season start. His debut was at home in front of a hyper crowd that was eager to see their new leader in action.

The young QB reveled in the excitement, getting the crowd riled up during opening warm ups and loosening up his arm.

During the game, he quickly discovered Denarius Moore and the kinds of catches the phenom wide out can make.

Moore fights for this deep jump ball from Schumacher, catching
the ball...and the defender's right arm...for the big play.

Of course, it's always nice to give a rookie a running game, and Julio Caulder got things going after a slow start. He ended up completing the drive with a draw play around the goal line for a walk-in touchdown.

Schumacher's second TD pass of the first half was a testament to his arm. If McCoy threw this route, the safety would have had more time to stop Ware, if not break up the pass. With Schumacher, however, the safety only had the time to take three steps and the ball was already in Ware's hands. Ware snagged the pass and with the separation, was able to get past the safety despite not having top speed and have enough lead to make it to the end zone for a touchdown.

Shumacher exploits the Cover 2 defense and Ware does the rest
    for the long TD play.

Moore ended up with 11 catches for 157 yards and a touchdown. Ware had another catch on a deep out route and ended up with 83 yards and his touchdown catch.

In the second half, Schumacher didn't get into quite the same rhythm, but the Raiders were content to just keep moving the ball and getting Caulder going. That's something else the rookie will have to get used to. Some of his rhythm falling apart might have been having to run the ball more.

"I could tell he wasn't too happy about running with us firing on all cylinders, " Moore commented, "But I told him this is good thing, not only because we're ahead, but the more Julio [Caulder] and the other backs wear this defense down, maybe we can hit them for another big play to put the dagger in."

Schumacher might not have liked seen the ball go to Caulder a lot, but he'll learn to love this power back if he keeps seeing 110-yard days like this. Caulder picked up those yards on 26 carries for 4.3 yards per carry to go with his touchdown.

The Raiders used all of their running backs for at least a few carries until some sort of system or pecking order can be worked out. Caulder, though, looks like he's back on top and Grant still doesn't look the same as he did when he was picking up 6 yards per rush.

Alfred Morris might be in the early lead and he was used as fullback in some sets. He got 2 rushes and broke both for 10 yards. Pennix fared the worst this week.

"We might have to do a rotation behind Caulder. That way we can give some real time to those guys and evaluate them, " Lyle spoke in the postgame press conference.

Injuries might force at least one of them to lose roster spots. CB Patrick Peterson, another one the fans were interested in seeing, suffered broken ribs on a punt return. Prior to the injury, he was playing excellent coverage. Peterson insisted on wanting to play special teams despite Lyle's aversion to do so, and he got another example of why he thinks the way he does.

Peterson fumbled on the play, and it turned into the lone turnover in the game.

The other injury also occurred on special teams. Tevin Ash will be out for what looks to be an extended amount of time. He is currently being evaluated and the team should have the results by Wednesday. The Ash injury might cause the team to put him on IR. Tough to do that in Week 1, so it might come down to a HB missing out on a chance to make the team.

Defensively, the pass coverage suffered somewhat with Peterson down. Still, they held up well overall, considering Schaub threw the ball 66 times in the game. The defense let up only 310 yards, which sounds like a lot, but amounts to just a 4.7 yards per attempt average and just 31 yards more than Schumacher. In addition, 73 of the yards came on the one play were Welker got by Peterson for a long touchdown.

Re: Rebuilding the Fear - Oakland Raiders M13 CCM

      Week 2 - Midweek News

      NCAA Football News:

Iowa's QB Jack Kane shocked the nation by defeating Michigan at the Big House, throwing four touchdowns in the process.

      NFL News:

Colts HB Ryan Grant is expected to be active for this week's game.

Lions HB Santez McKenzie has been benched (already?) and Ben Tate will replace him.

Colts QB Andrew Luck rejected his team's initial contract offer.

Lions DT Ndamukong Suh rejected the tender offer presented to him this week.

In one of the perpetual sagas of the league, FB Greg Jones (yet again) rejected the offer the Jaguars put forward.

In the other perpetual contract saga, the Dolphins can't get DT Randy Starks to agree to terms. Robert Flores tweeted, "The R. Starks/Dolphins deal apparently didn't include a private catapult to fling him from game to game."

(That had me rolling. That's just too funny. I'd love for someone to say that in real life, especially to the guy's face)

The Bucs locked up HB Doug Martin for 5 years and $25 M.

Chargers will see Eric Weddle lighting up receivers for 5 more years for $37.5 M (wonder how much that is per hit)

DeMarcus Ware got paid. Cowboys sign him for 5 years and $60 (!) M.

Halfback drama in Carolina as Mike Tolbert wants more money. I don't think the Panthers are the team a HB wants to get pushy with.

Giants WR Victor Cruz caught 2 TDs last week.

Maurice Jones-Drew ran over the Cardinals for 3 TDs as the Jags won 35-30.

Denarius Moore picked up 157 yards receiving to help fuel the Raiders' attack.

Wade Schumacher tallied 279 yards through the air and beat the Patriots 36-16 in the process.

49ers WR Eric Decker is expected to be out for several weeks due to an injury sustained last week.

WR Larry Fitzgerald passes Tony Gonzalez on the all-time touchdown receptions list.

HB Maurice Jones-Drew moves to #8 all-time in rushing TDs.

HB Steven Jackson pounds his way to 5th all-time in rushing yards.

LB Tevin Ash's injury has been diagnosed as a broken collarbone.

CB Patrick Peterson will be sidelined for a few weeks with broken ribs.

Ravens signed DE Osi Umenyiora to a 1-year deal worth $5 M.

The Bills fell 37-19 at home against the Browns.

      Awards:
AFC DPoW: Chiefs LB Derrick Johnson
NFC DPoW: Lions DB Jerome Murphy
AFC OPoW: Bengals QB Jake Locker
NFC OPoW: Falcons WR Julio Jones

      Raiders News:

      Injury News:

Team doctors are reporting that the injury to LB Tevin Ash is not as serious as initially stated on the field. While the linebacker will miss time, he is expected out just 3 weeks.

CB Patrick Peterson looks like he'll be ready to go in two weeks.

      Roster News:

With Peterson down, Cooper returns to his cornerback duties, as nickle corner.

Steven Grant denied rumors that he's in the "dog house" after his weaker-than-expected play from the Super Bowl onward. "I'm still happy here. I'm working on some things to try to be an impact for the team even if I don't carry the ball. If I want out, I'll tell coach, not you guys, " Grant commented during a media event.

HB Nathaniel Pennix was released. "He's a fullback who can't block, ' one scout commented. The team signed LB Nigel Bradham. Bradham is a high effort guy who knows how to use various pass rush techniques. He's a good chase-and-tackle type with a solid and powerful tackling and excellent determination in pursuit. The issues are going to be his instincts and ability to get off blocks. Probably a back-up/special teams type, but something of a worthwhile project.

Takeo Spikes will move into the starting mix. K.J. Wright will move inside in 3-4 alignments with Spikes getting a shot on the weak side.

      Scouting

TE Andrew Aiken of Florida looks like a possibility for a receiving TE. He doesn't have the speed, but his hands and ability to make tough catches has the team's attention at this point. Route running is a concern, however, and his blocking is a raw skill. Considered a late 2nd rounder.

TE Jordan Cates (UL Lafayette) is not much better at blocking, but is a stronger physical player. He also has good ball skills and better route running. Probably the higher/more projectable player for the team at this point. He's valued at a high 3rd round selection at this point.

WR Reggie Geathers (Pitt) has decent top speed and can make the easy catches, but there aren't many of those in the NFL. He won't go up for the harder catches and he loses concentration when moving through traffic. Considered a consensus 2nd round pick, but the team won't be interested unless something changes.

WR Kalen Motes (Rutgers) is a decent WR prospect. Has enough speed and good hands and route running. Won't make many tough catches, but his routes do get him open enough and he does fight hard off the line against press coverage. Still, if the team does go away from Jones in the first round, select Motes probably isn't a good idea as he's nothing unique.

      Notable Progression News

      WR Denarius Moore
      Consistency: 1 to 2
      AWR: 85 to 86

      HB Julio Caulder
      AWR: 77 to 79

          Rookie QB Wilts
          Schumacher Fails 2-Minute Offense,
          Third INT Seals Defeat, 25-22

Wade Schumacher will also have to get used to days like this where his offensive line does little more him (or Caulder) and injuries disrupt the rest of the offense's plans.

However, Moore's injury does not appear to be severe, and D'Andre Ware is really stepping up for the rookie QB, picking up probably his career best day with over 120 yards and 2 touchdown receptions. WR C.J. Gortman had some success as well.

But the big problem was the offensive line, which allowed 5 sackes. Von Miller racked up three of those himself. The Raiders tried to give it back, downing Josh Freeman about as many times, but Freeman and his more established offense avoided mistakes and had enough to withstand what looked like a furious rally by the Raiders.

Down 19-0 at the half, Schumacher led the opening drive of the second half for a long FG, then proceeded to deliver his 2 TDs to Ware, and also converting both 2-pt conversion attempts to tie the game at 19. However, the struggles returned on offense as the offensive line continued to harass Schumacher and the receivers had a hard time getting open.

Still, the Raiders had the last chance. Schumacher worked the ball into the red zone after a couple beautiful throws. With time running out, Schumacher tried to hit a pass in the corner of the end zone to fellow rookie WR Beatty, who was pressed in to action by Jacoby Ford going down with (yet another) injury, but the pass was intercepted with 15 seconds left.

Schumacher threw his helmet down in frustration as his teammates tried to console him. Coach Lyle also was seen talking to his rookie on the bench, trying to calm him down and keep his spirits up. He wasn't the only player upset as his play.

"I played like **** today. There's no other way to put it. I let my team down, " Julio Caulder commented.

Caulder shouldn't feel bad - the offensive line should. They did next to nothing against Denver's front seven. None of the backs really got anything going, and of course, the near constant pressure.

The defense was doing what it could to keep things in reach for the offense. They held the Broncos to several field goals, six of them. McClain had 8 tackles by half time, 13 for the game. Olsen recorded 9 tackles and Carillon and Branch had 8 each. Lamarr Houston had 3 sacks to match Von Miller.

One thing about Schumacher - he wasn't afraid to keep attacking. Hopefully, his confidence won't be shaken by today.

"With my arm, we should never be out of a game, and we came back, but my arm also killed us today, and I have to not let that happen. I'm supposed to win games, not lose them. That's why they brought me here, " Schumacher spoke after the game.

          Notes:

Tevin Ash's injury seems to be impacting more than was expected. Neither K.J Wright nor Takeo Spikes has been a good replacement so far. "We see why Spikes was released, " one official spoke on condition of anonymity, "What an overrated player. I hope we cut him and try some of those young linebackers I saw on the waiver wire and try to develop them. At least they have an excuse to suck."

              LB Jake Olsen
              TAK: 85 to 86

              Scouting:

With the team scouts still mystified at why Okoye Jones is a top 10 projection and Fabian Favors is a next-to-last pick in the draft slot, the team took a little closer look into the backgrounds of the players.

Okoye seems to be hard-as-nails when it comes to taking hits. He's never missed a game in his college career thus far. Fabian isn't quite as invincible, suffering some minor injuries. Fabian's speed isn't quite as impressive as thought. He also doesn't seem to play exceptionally fast on tape. Okoye? He's better, plays a bit faster. Still, it doesn't seem like 6 rounds of difference between these young men.

WR Dominique Owens out of Nebraska might be the best "bang for the buck" in the first round among wide outs. He seems to play fast on tape and made some beautiful looking catches - pure highlight reel material. He's not afraid to take hits, but struggles a bit running routes or beating press coverage. Like Okoye Jones, Dominique has a pristine injury history.

Outside linebacker Cameron Pierce from Alabama looked interesting...until they saw him miss tackle after tackle in some of his tape. "Not for us, " one scout commented, "Tackling is one of the four things we must see to be in the conversation at linebacker for us on draft day."

TE Karl Kruger from Nevada seems to be an unknown player. Quick look at the film seems to show a prospect that can be dynamic as a receiver from the TE position. Sounds like what the team has been wanting.

Takeaways the Difference in 45-26 Win

Injuries have hounded this team in the early going. There will be five players out (Peterson is expected to recover after this week) going into next week's game.

However, this week, the Brandon Lloyd signing paid off. He was the go-to receiver for Schumacher and had a big day. He got things started with a deep reception for a touchdown where the safety misjudged the pass just enough for Lloyd to go up and get the ball, and with the CB hitting him in the air, Lloyd was able to say on his feet. The safety was falling backwards and couldn't wrap up and Lloyd struggled his way into the end zone.

Matt Ryan countered with a solid drive that ended with a pass to Laurent Robinson in the back of the end zone to knot the score at 7. Schumacher's next possession led to a field goal to make the score 10-7.

Then Schumacher got into a groove. The Jags weren't letting Caulder do too much initially, but he was finding a little room, enough to keep things balanced. After a 10-play drive, the Raiders had 1st and Goal, and Marcel Reece made a diving catch in the end zone on a shallow In route where Schumacher had to throw early because of pressure. However, during the drive, D'Andre Ware was injured and would not return.

Matt Ryan's next possession ended with a tipped pass that was snagged off the shoe tops by Rolando McClain for an interception. Rookie WR Darryl Beatty made his one and only catch of the game when the flooded zone left Beatty alone near the goal line. Schumacher found him and zipped him the ball for the score. It was 21-10 by halftime and the Raiders looked dominant. Schumacher had 3 touchdown passes in the first half.

But then the inconsistency of youth again showed up. Schumacher couldn't find his targets, not helped by the fact he was down to none of his regular receivers and the only one who was experienced was Lloyd. Raiders got some run game going, but the passing game went off the mark. Schumacher threw an interception trying to force a pass to Marcel Reece.

Ryan took advantage of that miscue by moving the Jaguars easily into the end zone, hitting Mercedes Lewis for a 27-yard catch and run touchdown. The Jaguars attempted a two-point conversion, but if failed. Score was 21-16.

Next possession was a three-and-out for the Raiders and Ryan got his running game going with Jones-Drew, but then he suffered an injury when K.J. Wright hit him hard in the midsection. This also popped the ball out, but the Raiders couldn't get the recovery. Once again, the Raiders defense had trouble with the back up. Montell Owens game in and nearly pushed the Jaguars into the end zone. However, the defense stiffened in time to force a FG attempt. Score was now 21-19, and suddenly, all the momentum belonged to the home team.

When the Raiders get in trouble - they turn to Caulder to try to settle the game down. This time, Caulder didn't let his team down. He didn't put up any gaudy runs or yardage for the game, but his pounding started to work more, and the team mixed in Alfred Morris to continue the pounding attack with fresh legs. It was a running-game drive that the Raiders have come used to seeing, and it ended with a rushing TD for Caulder. Raiders grew the lead to 28-19 and that was the end of the 3rd quarter.

The coverage would then step up, even after a severe injury to Shaquille Carillon. Matt Ryan started to feel a little more pressure from the front four as well. He started looking a little unsettled in the pocket, and threw an ill-advised pass that Paris Cooper, now playing cornerback, would pick off.

This change of possession lead to another mostly-rushing drive with some Lloyd receptions mixed in. Caulder finished the drive with his second rushing score. The Raiders connected on a 2-pt conversion to make the score 36-19, and a three-possession lead. Raiders added a FG to make it 39-19.

The Jaguars didn't quit. Ryan worked the ball down field, aided with some tough runs by Marcel Owens. The drive ended with a touchdown reception for rookie WR Corey Gooden to make it 39-26.

Time started running short. Ryan forced another pass, this time to Fred Marshall, who made the interception. This third interception lead to another Caulder touchdown, this time a receiving score on a screen pass that caught the Jags by surprise. Reece took out the one defender trying to bust up the screen and Caulder waltzed into the end zone. The Raiders tried another two-point conversion, but this one failed.

On the ensuing kick off, K.J. Wright forced his second fumble. The kick returner WR Brendon Martin, was trying to be aggressive on the return, feeling the desperation when Wright hit him full on and the ball came out. Brandon Madison grabbed the loose ball, and the Raiders ran down the rest of the clock for the win.

Schumacher had his best day as a pro so far, posting a 101 quarterback rating and his first four touchdown day. He completed 60% of his passes as well.

"This feels much better, " Schumacher laughed, "I'm glad I could get the job done on the road. It's tough playing away from the cheers of your fans, and lost my focus for a while, but we pulled together for the win."

The Raiders enter their bye week at 2-1.

Schumacher completed passes to eight different targets...but only Lloyd and Reece caught more than one pass...Paris Cooper set a career high for tackles in a game...Raiders' pass rush generated no sacks...Brandon Lloyd commented after the game, "I love this kid [Schumacher], he throws a good ball that gets to you quick. I know I'm here because the team needed warm bodies, but I hope they keep me around..."
