Rookie QB, Offense Look Impressive.
Raiders Handle Patriots in 36-16 Victory.
The young QB reveled in the excitement, getting the crowd riled up during opening warm ups and loosening up his arm.
During the game, he quickly discovered Denarius Moore and the kinds of catches the phenom wide out can make.
Moore fights for this deep jump ball from Schumacher, catching
the ball...and the defender's right arm...for the big play.
Of course, it's always nice to give a rookie a running game, and Julio Caulder got things going after a slow start. He ended up completing the drive with a draw play around the goal line for a walk-in touchdown.
Schumacher's second TD pass of the first half was a testament to his arm. If McCoy threw this route, the safety would have had more time to stop Ware, if not break up the pass. With Schumacher, however, the safety only had the time to take three steps and the ball was already in Ware's hands. Ware snagged the pass and with the separation, was able to get past the safety despite not having top speed and have enough lead to make it to the end zone for a touchdown.
Shumacher exploits the Cover 2 defense and Ware does the rest
for the long TD play.
In the second half, Schumacher didn't get into quite the same rhythm, but the Raiders were content to just keep moving the ball and getting Caulder going. That's something else the rookie will have to get used to. Some of his rhythm falling apart might have been having to run the ball more.
"I could tell he wasn't too happy about running with us firing on all cylinders, " Moore commented, "But I told him this is good thing, not only because we're ahead, but the more Julio [Caulder] and the other backs wear this defense down, maybe we can hit them for another big play to put the dagger in."
Schumacher might not have liked seen the ball go to Caulder a lot, but he'll learn to love this power back if he keeps seeing 110-yard days like this. Caulder picked up those yards on 26 carries for 4.3 yards per carry to go with his touchdown.
The Raiders used all of their running backs for at least a few carries until some sort of system or pecking order can be worked out. Caulder, though, looks like he's back on top and Grant still doesn't look the same as he did when he was picking up 6 yards per rush.
Alfred Morris might be in the early lead and he was used as fullback in some sets. He got 2 rushes and broke both for 10 yards. Pennix fared the worst this week.
"We might have to do a rotation behind Caulder. That way we can give some real time to those guys and evaluate them, " Lyle spoke in the postgame press conference.
Injuries might force at least one of them to lose roster spots. CB Patrick Peterson, another one the fans were interested in seeing, suffered broken ribs on a punt return. Prior to the injury, he was playing excellent coverage. Peterson insisted on wanting to play special teams despite Lyle's aversion to do so, and he got another example of why he thinks the way he does.
Peterson fumbled on the play, and it turned into the lone turnover in the game.
The other injury also occurred on special teams. Tevin Ash will be out for what looks to be an extended amount of time. He is currently being evaluated and the team should have the results by Wednesday. The Ash injury might cause the team to put him on IR. Tough to do that in Week 1, so it might come down to a HB missing out on a chance to make the team.
Defensively, the pass coverage suffered somewhat with Peterson down. Still, they held up well overall, considering Schaub threw the ball 66 times in the game. The defense let up only 310 yards, which sounds like a lot, but amounts to just a 4.7 yards per attempt average and just 31 yards more than Schumacher. In addition, 73 of the yards came on the one play were Welker got by Peterson for a long touchdown.
