Re: Rebuilding the Fear - Oakland Raiders M13 CCM

    Raiders Withstand Rivers' Rally
Chargers Score 22 Fourth Quarter Points,
    But Raiders Hang On 31-28

The Raiders looked like they had this one in the bag. The Chargers offense was doing nothing and the Raiders were content not to take a lot of chances on their own.

The special teams got things started for the silver and black as a pair of rookies, LB Adrian McGruder and CB Heston Hill, combined to cause a fumble and house it for six.

After that, Caulder took over with two rushing touchdowns. After three, it was 21-6, Oakland.

Then Rivers woke up. He started attacking deep, perhaps catching the Raiders by surprise. At first, the Chargers simply settled for a FG after reaching the Raiders' 1 yard line. A fumble and a failed scoop by Wright pushed the ball back to the 10.

But that was just the start. The Chargers again marched down the field with Rivers daring McClain to beat him. McClain tried, pounding the receivers as they caught the ball, but no drops or fumbles. In the end, it was a touchdown and a successful 2-pt conversion. Score was tied at 21.

Caulder said enough of this and started pounding the ball again. Schumacher added some good throws, and Caulder punched in his third rushing TD of the day.

But then Schumacher made a mistake trying to get a pass to Moore. The ball was picked off. The Chargers moved down the field, again attacking McClain - and nearly paying for it as he almost had an interception.

Rivers stopped throwing at McClain at that point, instead picking on rookie Heston Hill, who looked lost. Then the Raiders went to zone coverage, but Roy Williams found the back corner of the end zone to tie the game with 1:13 left.

Schumacher started attacking. In 40 seconds, he moved the Raiders into field goal range. They took a shot for the end zone, but then bled out the Chargers' time outs. Janikowski made the 32-yard FG to give the Raiders a 31-28 lead.

There was no more magic in Rivers' arm as the team stopped the Chargers on downs, aided by Houston's 3rd sack of the day, which forced Rivers to just clock the ball on 3rd down, and kneeled on the ball once to claim the win.

The defense looked scarily bad at the end of the game, completely collapsing. For the second week in a row, McClain looked to be one of the few actually hustling for the whole game, and even then, he had 'only' 9 tackles - perhaps because of the Chargers' aerial attack.

Schumacher is also looking out of rhythm at a terrible time. He did pick up 253 yards and 61% completion percentage, but no touchdowns and another interception. Positives on offense were Caulder and a good day by TE Dwayne Allen, picking up 6 receptions for 90 yards and just missing a TD. If he can continue this kind of play, that would help the Raiders attack the middle of the field more easily, not to mention pressure linebackers and safeties.

And - the Raiders did win their 7th in a row, now sitting at 12-2. Schumacher's critics, though, will have a field day with Caulder's 30 carries and 3 TDs...."carrying" the day instead of the big bad strong-armed QB.

      Week 16 - Midweek News

      NCAA Football:

Nevada TE Karl Kruger has broken the TE record for receptions, but scouts still don't praise him highly just yet.

Colorado HB Mark Wood pounded out 107 yards on 31 carries, making some wonder why he doesn't try to bounce to other holes instead of just running into traffic and fighting through it.

      NFL News:

      Awards:

NFC OPoW: QB Robert Griffin III (Redskins)
AFC OPoW: HB Arian Foster (Texans)
NFC DPoW: MLB Jovan Belcher (Giants)
AFC OPoW: FS Husain Abdullah (Patriots)

Terrelle Pryor and the Eagles outdueled the Redskins 44-38 in a battle of offenses.

      Chargers680353351
      Chiefs590329343
      Broncos590362398

The Raiders found a way last week, but they can't feel good about the win. Allowing 22 points in any quarter is inexcusable for this defense, but especially the 4th quarter. In addition, the Colts also won their 7th in a row to keep pace for the #1 seed. However, the Raiders have clinched as least a bye and the #2 seed, as have the Colts.

      Next Game: Giants (9-5) @ Raiders (12-2)

The Raiders sport the league's best defense, but will need to prove it in what might be a tough game.

      Injury Report:

RT Jeff Otah was injured last week, suffering a minor groin pull. He will miss the last two games of the regular season, but should be fine for the playoffs.

      Roster News:

Stefen Wisniewski will see the field again, this time a RT. He's expected to fill in there until Otah heals.

No other roster moves are expected. Lyle stood behind his young QB and named him starter this week without hesitation.

The Raiders are going to experiment with a pure 3-4 this week and likely next week as well, using the relative unimportance of the game as a sort of 'scout team' exercise.

The linebackers will line up, from right to left, as Ash, Olsen, McClain, Wright.

Nose tackle is expected to be Jordan McCown as starter. Shaughnessy will start at RDE with Fields coming in for passing situations.

      Player News:

DE Lamarr Houston surpassed last year's personal best of 17 sacks last week. He currently has 18, and is in reach of Strahan's sack record.

Heston Hill's defensive touchdown last week was the first of his career.

      Notable Progression:

      HB Julio Caulder
      STR: 78 to 79

      CB Heston Hill
      ZCV: 69 to 72

      LG Aaryn DePriest
      PBK: 85 to 86

      SS Tyvon Branch
      TAK: 80 to 81

      LB K.J. Wright
      AWR: 80 to 81

      TE Dwayne Allen
      RTE: 55 to 56

      Scouting News:

Scouts took a closer look at SS Lyndell Robinson and his physical attributes grade out pretty well. He's in the low 90's for speed, acceleration, and power.

HB Xavier Slaughter isn't quite as fast as hoped, coming in only in the low 90's. However, this quick feet might let him make up for any speed issues in the open field, and he remains of interest to the team.

TE Karl Kruger is now considered a second round projection, and might make it hard for the team to land him. At this point, TE Jordan Cates might be more realistic as the team's late 2nd round pick.

LOLB Davarius Bullock raised his stock with the team by displaying excellent footwork during an impromptu workout arranged by his agent. He also graded out in the low 90's for acceleration, which might make him an explosive blitzer.

"Could this be why they are experimenting with a pure 3-4?" One analyst spoke, "I mean, this kid is the kind of prospect you change your defense for, no doubt. He remains me of Suggs in his rookie year: already dynamic and will get better as he learns."

Re: Rebuilding the Fear - Oakland Raiders M13 CCM

        Eli Throws Game Away
Three Picks Thwart Giants' Hopes of
Snapping Raiders Streak. Raiders Win 20-13

In a pouring rain, the Raiders looked flat from the start.

The Giants came out and took the opening kickoff the distance. Nice way to start, silver and black. Down 7-0 before even taking the field.

Raiders offense does nothing and the defense still looks out of sorts, but they only gave up a field goal to go down 10-0 after one.

Raiders come alive some in the second quarter. They get a nice drive from Schumacher that climaxed in Caulder fighting across the goal line on a screen pass for a TD. The Raiders worked down the field one more time, after Brandon Madison picked off Manning, for a FG, as did the Giants to make it 13-10 at the half. Paris Cooper hit Manning as he threw and the ball hung up for Brandon Madison. His WR-level hands weren't going to miss that easy catch.

Raiders get the opening possession of the second half and get a big play from Denarius Moore (shocking). Giants blew a coverage and the Schumacher hit Moore in stride. The strong safety, Phillips, had no chance on the play. Moore took it all the way for a touchdown.
Then there was Marcel Reece forcing a fumble on special teams. Paris Cooper, who seemed to be all over the field, recovered. Raiders tack on another field goal to make it 20-13.

The fourth quarter was basically just the Raiders watching the Giants' offense flail around. Brandon Jacobs got hurt on the play (one of McClain's paltry four tackles) and Nathaniel Pennix, who seems to get passed around from team to team, came in and could do little. Eli Manning threw his 3rd interception to Tyvon Branch (Patrick Peterson was also there), trying to force the ball to Victor Cruz in the end zone. Raiders got no points, but ate time off the clock.

Raiders were just playing conservatively, but Steven Grant broke a big run to get the Raiders into FG range for what would ice the game...but Janikowski missed.

That gave Eli one more chance to work a 2-minute drill for the comeback. Started off well, hitting Nicks over the middle for 20, then getting a first down with one of the few good runs Pennix had. But then the drive stalled with Cooper nearly getting his second interception to turn it over on downs and seal the win.

The defense didn't have much in the way of super standout performances, but they didn't give up much of anything either. In fact, just 6 offensive points as they looked much more like themselves. Perhaps they should pray for rain every week from now on.

          Week 17 - Midweek News

          NCAA Football:

Arizona RE Richard Wayne played a strong first half in the PAC Championship, but was terrible in the second half as Stanford defeated Arizona.

DT Connor Murphy (Boston College) was terrible and Boston College lost their Bowl Game to Utah 21-10.

Kentucky QB Ronald Dunson was a big disappointment in his senior year, and his draft stock appears to have plummeted as a result.

          NFL News:

Jake Locker passed the touchdowns in a single-season record with 52 TD passes and there's a week left to play.

In what could be a preview of the AFC Championship Game, the Raiders will travel to Indy for a battle of 8-game winning streaks to decide the top seed in the AFC.

          Injury News:

No news to report this week.

          Player News:

Lamarr Houston picked up 2 sacks last week to go to 20. If he can get 3 sacks this week, he'll break the single-season sacks record.

WR Denarius Moore and HB Julio Caulder may not play the full game, despite the #1 seed being on the line. Moore especially might be pulled.

"I don't want to risk major injury to a major piece we'll need in fighting for the bigger prize, " Lyle spoke. Caulder may play the full game as he would like to reach 1,350 yards on the season (needs 100).

If there was any doubt, McClain is playing. "You'd have to cripple me to get me off this field, " McClain spoke. Let's not give them any ideas, okay?

I doubt he'll get it. Not enough sacks. (As in 0, since that's not his role with us)

If he does, I'll be shocked.

I'm going to shoot the 3-4 in the head. Either still FUBAR or this team just isn't a 3-4 team. 46 here we come.

I just finished the draft where you got K. Waters and Shumacher. Both of those guys were top picks by the CPU as well. Waters looks like he's gonna be really good.

I took some of your strategy advice and drafted McGruder. What a steal he was, and the draft "experts" didn't like the pic so much lol. Can't wait to see what scouting prospects you have for next seasons draft, I'll be watching!

Oh, and I picked up an UDFA before the first preseason game, he was a WR rookie rated 75! Name is Dylan Keldani, you should see if he's available in the FA pool still.

Hands and Colts Fail 2-pt Conversion. Raiders Hold on 24-22.

If I was a Colts fan, I'd be so mad at the offensive coordinator. Andrew Luck marches the team down the field in the final two minutes to score the tying touchdown to Greg Jennings, fitting the ball into a corner-safety coverage beautifully, but when it's time for the two-point conversion to tie...they..***n? Something that has marginally worked all day? And not even a draw play - just a basic between-the-tackles run.

Ryan Grant ran hard, but had little success in general, yet Luck was hot and had renewed confidence after throwing 2 picks to Patrick Peterson on two consecutive possessions, leading to the leading TD for the Raiders.

"It's disappointing. That's all I'll say. The Raiders played hard, they won 8 straight for a reason. We just didn't have enough. I'm leaving it at that, " Luck spoke after the game when asked about the playcalling.

The Colts came out firing in the first half, picking up a 16-3 lead at the half. Their defense was also shutting down anything the Raiders tried. Schumacher was completely out of rhythm and the receivers didn't help matters any.

The first drive of the second half went just as bad. But then Oakland woke up and realized that they, too, have thirteen wins. Schumacher starting finding his receivers and Caulder started running hard. He was running hard enough to injure Robert Mathis for a little while and just pushing around the corners.

That bruising opened things up both with a couple play action passes as well as the receivers getting open more against the banged up coverage. The first touchdown came to a slant to D'Andre Ware. The next was a 6-yard run by Caulder. That got the Raiders ahead 17-16. Helping along the way was Patrick Peterson getting a read on Luck, picking him off twice in the quarter. The pass rush was also getting closer, adding to the trouble the young QB was having.

In the 4th quarter, the Raiders got some breathing room with hard-pounding drive with Caulder and Grant. Caulder gashed the Colts up the middle consistently and shaking off tacklers. He capped off the drive with a screen pass TD, running over another corner who tried to stop him.

Caulder's determination was too much for the Colts defender.

The offense continues making mistakes. This time three lost fumbles and a Schumacher interception (he also lost a fumble). The defense keeps finding ways to adjust and picking up takeaways of their own and the offense figures itself out sooner than later most times.

"The Raiders are either blessed with an killer defense or are the luckiest team in the NFL. Right now, I'm leaning towards the luck...no pun intended, " an analyst commented.

The Raiders end the season at 14-2 and the AFC road to the Super Bowl will go through Oakland.

                        Raiders News

Raiders ended the season at 14-2, good enough for best record in the NFL. However, it means little unless the team can finally break through and win the Lombardi.

                        Next Game: Bye

                        Injury News:

WR Brad Smith suffered another serious injury and will be placed on IR. He broke his collarbone and will be out until next season.

The team got back DE Keiwone Walters, WR C.J. Gortman, and RT Jeff Otah, just in time for the playoff run.

                        Roster News:

Gortman will likely return kicks along with Leon Washington, who was picked up to replace Brad Smith on the roster. Washington will also handle punt returns.

Keiwone Walters returns to his DE spot as starter. Quinterrius Fields remains in his pass rush situational role.

With the 4-3 back in effect, the team moves Jake Olsen to the LOLB spot with Ash remaining at ROLB. K.J. Wright will back up and come in when certain packages are used.

"Getting all of these linebackers on the field is going to be an increasing problem, if having too much talent a position can be classified as a problem. Just seems like the team should dangle some of these guys out for trades, " One analyst commented, "I'd start with Jake Olsen. They love his coverage ability, but I don't see him producing."

Coach Lyle had hinted on going with more chase-and-tackle type linebackers that hit hard and rush the passer. Wonder if he's thinking along the lines of this analyst's comments? But he is also dismissing the 3-4. What could he have in mind?

kinda odd but telling that the 3 backups combined for about half as many carries as caulder, but had no TD's to his 12

                              Raiders News

Raiders will attempt to defend their home field against the Jaguars, who put up a surprising number of points considering they are offensively in the same league as the Raiders (Jags: 28th, Raiders: 27th). On paper, the Raiders defense would seem to tip the scales...but that's why they play the games...

                                Tell me about it.

Just something about Caulder. Not even y/c because Caulder was just blah.

I still don't know what it is or why. Nothing in the ratings or traits would indicate that kind of disparity.

If nothing else, Morris or Grant - I thought at least one of them would do well.

The other really interesting stat that jumped at me was Olsen having 23 TFL, but neither the tackles numbers of McClain or the sacks of Houston.
