Chargers Score 22 Fourth Quarter Points,
But Raiders Hang On 31-28
The Raiders looked like they had this one in the bag. The Chargers offense was doing nothing and the Raiders were content not to take a lot of chances on their own.
The special teams got things started for the silver and black as a pair of rookies, LB Adrian McGruder and CB Heston Hill, combined to cause a fumble and house it for six.
After that, Caulder took over with two rushing touchdowns. After three, it was 21-6, Oakland.
Then Rivers woke up. He started attacking deep, perhaps catching the Raiders by surprise. At first, the Chargers simply settled for a FG after reaching the Raiders' 1 yard line. A fumble and a failed scoop by Wright pushed the ball back to the 10.
But that was just the start. The Chargers again marched down the field with Rivers daring McClain to beat him. McClain tried, pounding the receivers as they caught the ball, but no drops or fumbles. In the end, it was a touchdown and a successful 2-pt conversion. Score was tied at 21.
Caulder said enough of this and started pounding the ball again. Schumacher added some good throws, and Caulder punched in his third rushing TD of the day.
But then Schumacher made a mistake trying to get a pass to Moore. The ball was picked off. The Chargers moved down the field, again attacking McClain - and nearly paying for it as he almost had an interception.
Rivers stopped throwing at McClain at that point, instead picking on rookie Heston Hill, who looked lost. Then the Raiders went to zone coverage, but Roy Williams found the back corner of the end zone to tie the game with 1:13 left.
Schumacher started attacking. In 40 seconds, he moved the Raiders into field goal range. They took a shot for the end zone, but then bled out the Chargers' time outs. Janikowski made the 32-yard FG to give the Raiders a 31-28 lead.
There was no more magic in Rivers' arm as the team stopped the Chargers on downs, aided by Houston's 3rd sack of the day, which forced Rivers to just clock the ball on 3rd down, and kneeled on the ball once to claim the win.
The defense looked scarily bad at the end of the game, completely collapsing. For the second week in a row, McClain looked to be one of the few actually hustling for the whole game, and even then, he had 'only' 9 tackles - perhaps because of the Chargers' aerial attack.
Schumacher is also looking out of rhythm at a terrible time. He did pick up 253 yards and 61% completion percentage, but no touchdowns and another interception. Positives on offense were Caulder and a good day by TE Dwayne Allen, picking up 6 receptions for 90 yards and just missing a TD. If he can continue this kind of play, that would help the Raiders attack the middle of the field more easily, not to mention pressure linebackers and safeties.
And - the Raiders did win their 7th in a row, now sitting at 12-2. Schumacher's critics, though, will have a field day with Caulder's 30 carries and 3 TDs...."carrying" the day instead of the big bad strong-armed QB.
