Re: Rebuilding the Fear - Oakland Raiders M13 CCM
Down to the Final Second
Rookie Vinopal Comes Through With Game-Winning FG.
Raiders Squeak Past Texans 23-20.
This game was the opposite of the wide open affair last week. Both teams were dealing out punishing hits and suffering injuries.
The intensity of the Texans pass rush was a dominant factor all game long. Martens had little to no protection all day and the rushed throws led to 3 INTs, including one in the end zone and another with the team in FG range. He still stood in there and picked up over 300 yards on the day, but eventually he left with in injury and did not return.
"He's got to go. I want to like him, but he's just paper thin it seems. He's no good to the team on the trainer's table, " a local sports analyst commented.
Unfortunately for the Raiders, Papagianopoulos was no better - and got no better protection. The Raiders are likely to be scouting for quarterbacks heavily - some have said there could be a total shake up, as in three new QBs, unless things turn around.
J.J. Watt and Charles Johnson both picked up sacks and were a constant presence inside the pocket.
Making matters worse, DeRay Ray was laid out by Brian Cushing and reportedly suffered a broken jaw. At least Bull Griggs was still running hard and keep that phase of the game solid.
The Raiders defense wasn't lying around either. Maeweather looked more like Maeweather with 16 tackles, 2 forced fumbles, and 3 more sacks. His partners Wagner and Bullock also left their mark on ball carriers with 8 tackles each.
Fumble luck was another theme. The Raiders forced four fumbles...and all four bounced right back to the Texans.
Martens picked up his lone passing TD on a 44-yard strike to Moore, who had a great day with 178 yards on 9 receptions.
Bull Griggs powered ahead for a 1-yard score in the third quarter.
The Texans picked up a TD on the ground via Arian Foster before he was knocked out of the game in the second quarter.
Down 17-13, the Texans had a drive stall just outside field goal range, and went for it on 4th and 3. Martin completed a short pass to Mariani, who lined up in the backfield on that play. Maeweather got over and brought him down just short of the line to gain, giving the ball back to the Raiders.
The offense couldn't do anything but eat some time, however. On the next possession, Texans QB Ashton Martin threw an INT to Brandon Madison. The Raiders managed to turn that into a FG to make it 20-13, as well as take the game down inside 2 minutes.
Next drive was under 2 minutes and Martin was again struggling to move the ball until he hit WR Dylan Hangerup on a long pass play. That put the Texans inside the Raiders' 5 yard line. From there Martin found HB Darius Sherman for the tying score.
With less than a minute left, Papagianopoulos found Sam Jackson along the sideline against Cover 2 for a big play. Next, he hit Moore with a well-placed pass that let Moore make the catch and step out to save a timeout.
A few plays later, he found Moore on a post route to get the Raiders in the red zone and forcing the Texans to use their last timeout. Griggs ran the ball to take some more time off the clock and the Raiders were in position to sit on the ball and kick for the win or take it to overtime.
Rookie kicker Vinopal lined up the FG and won the game as time expired.

Yep - they started zoning in on the medium depth passes and his short passes are...not accurate. It was "one of those games" he does sometimes - he's a feast or famine type guy for sure.
Fortunately, the defense limited the damage of the turnovers."Some people call it butterflies, but to him, it probably feels like pterodactyls in his stomach." --Plesac in MLB18Comment

Re: Rebuilding the Fear - Oakland Raiders M13 CCM
Breaking News: Bobby Wagner Wants Out, Martens' Days Numbered?
Not only have talks broken down with Bobby Wagner, the linebacker wants out.
"I don't even want to talk anymore. I told them to trade me now so I have a chance to get the money I deserve. To coach's credit, he agreed. Of course, he also said I'm not starting either, " Wagner spoke.
The Raiders have never taken kindly to players who don't even want to negotiate and have never let them linger around if at all possible.
Davarius Bullock is playing his cards a little tighter - saying he still wants to talk, for now.
Of course, the Raiders are about to move on from him as well it seems, or at least see what it has in James Hazzard.
Wagner will likely draw interest from other teams, so this distraction should not last long.
In other news, the injury-prone nature of Martens might be his ultimate downfall.
"We need a QB that can go to work and take the bumps and bruises of a NFL season, " Lyle spoke, "I want that to be Martens because I do like his potential, but it doesn't do much on the sideline."
The Raiders have been actively scouting some of the top-regarded QBs already, so it looks like this isn't just bluster or "challenging a guy" but instead a real possibility of handing the reigns to another QB. And it likely won't be Ricketts or Papagianopoulos as neither of them have shown much of anything.
Martens hasn't commented, but his agent said that he understands where the team is coming from, but isn't sure he wants his client playing for a team that gets upset over some "occasional injury concerns". Never mind that he was on IR last year and has missed 6 weeks in the past two seasons, not counting the entire playoffs last year or how many ever weeks he'll miss with his latest "injury concern".

Week 3 - Midweek News
NCAA Football News:
Alabama HB Latrell Robinson is now the starting HB as the prior starter is on the shelf with an injury.
MLB Logan Bollinger is now playing for USC after deeming himself too good for SC State's football program.
NFL News:
LB Sean Weatherspoon is staying with the Falcons at the price of 4 years and around $19 M.
QB Jay Cutler rejected an offer from the Bears.
LB Brian Cushing and the Texans reportedly agreed to an extension that will pay a total value of $42 M over the next 5 years.
LB Keith Rivers said no to an offer by the Vikings for an extension.
Texans HB Arian Foster is expected out for a few weeks.
HB Matt Forte is 8th all-time in rushing TDs.
Steelers HB Peyton Hillis suffered a dislocated elbow last week.
Raiders News
The Raiders played a hard-fought and ugly game but came away with a win to advance to 2-0. Everyone in the division won except for the Chiefs, so no team has any breathing room to start the year.
The offense is still at it's inconsistent ways and injuries will not help that. Don't know what Lyle will plan to do with the offense this week, but at least the defense is rearing to go unlike the slow start they had last year.
Raiders' Next Game: Browns (1-1) @ Raiders (2-0)
Raiders Injury Report Pos Player Injury Note WR Akia Green Out 1 week (dislocated elbow) QB Danny Martens Out 2 weeks (broken thumb) HB DeRay Ray Out 2 weeks (broken jaw)
The injury to three key offensive players are minor but annoying nonetheless.
Transactions:
Raiders sign QB Kevin Kolb to a 1-year contract.
Contract talks have begun with WR Denarius Moore.
Roster News:
Kolb will get the 1st team reps in practice and figures to be the starter until Martens returns. At that time, it will be interesting to see what the Raiders do at the QB position, especially if Kolb plays well.
Patrick Peterson will handle the returner duties in the absence of Ray.
Griggs returns to starting HB.
James Hazzard will start at ROLB in place of Wagner. Olsen will likely sub in nickle formations.
Kendle Maeweather was named AFC Defensive Player of the Week.
Notable Progression:

ZCV: 58 to 59
RG Max Justice
PBK: 83 to 85
CB Patrick Peterson
CTH: 80 to 81

TAK: 84 to 85
Scouting News:
The team took more looks at QBs Stephen Diaz and Cameron Czaplewski. Some interesting differences emerged. Diaz is more athletic but continues to show his more raw nature as a passer. Diaz, though, has a nearly perfect injury history.
Czaplewski is more "NFL ready" as a QB. He can make the throws, uses play action well, can throw on the move and isn't a complete statue in the pocket. He has proven more injury risky, however.
Both QBs can get aggressive with forcing passes, but stay composed about as well as the average NFL QB when facing pressure. Both can throw a consistent spiral on their passes and their balls show good rotation in the air.
Both QBs have strong enough arms to take advantage of the athleticism the Raiders are trying to amass in its wide outs.Last edited by KBLover; 06-29-2013, 03:28 AM."Some people call it butterflies, but to him, it probably feels like pterodactyls in his stomach." --Plesac in MLB18Comment

Re: Rebuilding the Fear - Oakland Raiders M13 CCM
Takeways Lead the Way
Kolb's Severe Injury Doesn't Hurt as Defense
Carries the Day With Turnovers. Raiders Win 20-7.
Oakland must be cursed at QB because Kolb went down hurt and had to be carted off the field. That brought in Papagianopoulos and he did little besides throw short passes the whole game.
Which was the plan. He managed just over 100 yards on the day...and still threw an INT...but found Moore on a 2-yd pass off play action for his touchdown and a key score.
Beyond that, the Raiders saw they were in a slugfest and the offense pretty much ran and hid behind the defense's skirt.
Fortunately, the defense's skirt was long enough to cover for the offense and make the game go easier.
In all, the defense picked up 6 takeaways, four of them on Michael Pffeifer's interceptions, and generated a touchdown to pave the way to victory.
The TD came via Davarius Bullock, who picked off a pass in the flat and had a wide open field for the score. He also picked up one of four sacks on the day. The other three sacks came from Tevin Ash.
The run defense clamped down on Trent Richardson, further hindering the Browns' attack. Still, with the Raiders "offense" not able to do much either, the game was a struggle of the Raiders D trying to keep the lid on and the offense looking to avoid mistakes, which they did for the most part.
"It was one of those smashmouth games, " Maeweather commented, "That's the kind where it's time to rise up as a defender. We did it today, all of us together doing our parts."
Maeweather led all defenders with 11 tackles.
Brandon Madison got 2 of the interceptions. Tyvon Branch grabbed the other.
The Raiders advance to 3-0 and the defense just continues it's strong start.

Week 4 - Midweek News
NCAA Football News:
Navy WR Andre Gibbons is thought to have Calvin Johnson-like abilities as a receiver.
QB Stephen Diaz has been dismissed from Oklahoma State's football team due to repeat violations.
NFL News:
Lions acquire LB Bobby Wagner from the Raiders for a 4th round pick and a 7th round pick in 2021.
Cardinals expect QB Brandon Weeden to play this week.
Chiefs LB Justin Houston agreed to a 6-year extension worth $56.4 M.
The Colts and MLB Antwon Russel can't come to terms on a contract extension.
QB Lejon Jackson rejected a contract offer from the Falcons.
DE Aaron Curry rejected the extension offer made to him by the Colts.
Chargers QB Ken Marshall threw for 5 TD as his team beat the Eagles 38-20.
Bills QB Terrelle Pryor helped his team nip the Broncos 38-31.
Raiders News
The Raiders sit atop the AFC West by advancing to 3-0. The Broncos loss and the Chargers win puts both of them at 2-1.
Meanwhile, the offense seems to be regressing as the defense takes charge. Of course, the Raiders have won this way before, and it seems to be working, so far. However, it leaves little room for error and may not be sustainable.
Raiders' Next Game: Chiefs (1-2) @ Raiders (3-0)
Raiders Injury Report Pos Player Injury Note QB Kevin Kolb Out 3 weeks (broken wrist) QB Danny Martens Out 1 week (broken thumb) HB DeRay Ray Out 1 week (broken jaw)
One more week until Martens and Ray return. Green returns this week, so hopefully he can add a spark and take some load of rookies Jackson and Bumpers.
Kolb won't be usable for three weeks.
Transactions:
Contract talks continue with WR Denarius Moore. The team also initiated talks with DT Immanuel Dawn. TE Karl Kruger might not get an extension as the team has been using project TE Tim Willinson so far with decent success.
Trade talk around acquiring QB Lejon Jackson (Falcons) won't die down. Some feel the Raiders will address the backup situation via trade instead of waiting for the draft, especially after the troubles concerning Stephen Diaz, one of the projected targets for the Raiders.
Roster News:
Papagianopoulos is probably going to be the starter this week as the team basically has a choice between the lesser evil until Martens returns next week.
Akia Green goes back to his #1 WR spot, settling the rest of the WR back into their usual spots.

Re: Rebuilding the Fear - Oakland Raiders M13 CCM
Lejon Talks Stall, but Rumors Continue to Rage
The Raiders and Falcons confirmed that talks started about Lejon Johnson, but they have fallen apart for now it seems. The Raiders reportedly offered at least a 2nd round pick as well as a lesser pick and another player but the Falcons say they are going to try to work it out with the dual-threat QB.
"I think that's posturing, but perhaps they do think they can get something worked out. Perhaps if the Raiders offered someone like Seawood or perhaps even Jake Olsen? Both are players who are young, talented as they are and offer high upside. Neither is starting, which speaks to the depth on defense. Why not turn a bit of that into QB depth now?" An analyst commented.
That might would seal the deal, but would the Raiders make that kind of move? Seawood has seen the field and is insurance in case Shyquawn goes down or regresses from his solid start. Jake Olsen is the best pass defender among the LBs and has patiently served the team without complaint, even in a backup or special teams role.
"I've heard about that [Jake Olsen being trade bait for Lejon Johnson], and I don't see it. That would send the wrong message to the team. Olsen is a team guy, doesn't make waves, trading him away I think that would upset the defensive unit. If I were to suggest a LB to trade, and I don't think I would with a straight face to this team, it would be Bullock if they think Hazzard could do the job. Then draft Wilcox and go with K-Mae [Kendle Maeweather] flanked by Hazzard and Wilcox with Olsen coming in for Hazzard in nickle/dollar sets."
Among all the talk, Kip Ricketts finally responded, perhaps feeling in his gut he's the odd man out:
"Whatever, I mean, if they think I'm not good with them giving time to the so-called "Big Papa", then so be it. He [Papagianopoulos] isn't any good, but if they want to listen to the sheep that love him for whatever reason, it's their loss. If we don't make it to the Super Bowl again, we'll know why."

Re: Rebuilding the Fear - Oakland Raiders M13 CCM
Grinding, Hard-Hitting Game. Typical.
As Usual, Chiefs-Raiders Contest Leads to Vicious Hits and Lots of Defense.
Raiders Come Out on Top 16-3.
First play for the Chiefs - Charles goes out with a broken collarbone. Ndamukong Suh did the deed and the hit is under review by league officials.
First play for the Raiders - Papagianopolus forces a tough catch out of Moore, and he gets blasted and leaves the game.
In other words, just your typical start to a game between the AFL Rivals.
Chiefs rookie QB Kian McKenzie got a bitter taste of the Raiders defense when they are fired up and ready to go. Nothing he could try would work aside from one single big play by TE Jermaine Gresham. That got the Chiefs in FG range and they converted. That made the score 3-3 at the time.
The Raiders offense wasn't going much better until Griggs got warmed up and started moving the ball on the ground. Still, Big Papa wasn't getting much in the way of protection and seemed confused by the 3-4 alignment the Chiefs were attacking with. He did avoid making an interception in another solid relief effort.
The best drive Papagianopoulos led was a tenacious 16-play drive for a touchdown. Griggs and Caulder worked their combo magic along with smart throws from Papa when needed. The result was Papa's TD on the day, a 6 yard pass to De'Aarius Bumpers who slipped behind the shallow zone coverage of the Chiefs.
Defensively, FS Shyquawn Johnson is doing his best to make the team forget about fellow FS Lamel Seawood. Johnson forced two fumbles, one of which was recovered by Brandon Madison.
J.J. Smoke made his first INT of the season in the game when McKenzie was rushed in his decision. He tried to finesse the ball past Smoke, but failed as the young corner jumped the route.
James Hazzard also tried to make an impression, picking up 7 tackles and a sack. He nearly had an interception as well. He matched Maeweather's 7 tackles and a sack performance.
Tevin Ash picked up a couple sacks as well as the pass rush continues to be a big part of the defense.
"They sure didn't miss Bobby Wagner out there, " one analyst commented. "The Raiders looked like they also do when they are playing well."
As solid as Papagianopoulos' play was, he did leave some big plays on the field. Akia Green ran a beautiful route combination with Bumpers to force Berry to make a decision on who to cover. Berry went to Bumpers in the corner while Green sharply cut towards the post. Papa saw the route and made the right choice, but the ball sailed and Green had no chance.
He also missed TE Willison going down the middle of the field. Another throw was a corner route where Sam Jackson split the CB and FS - but the throw didn't have the zip needed to take advantage.
Papagianopoulos did have a nice scramble for some positive yards that helped keep the long drive alive. It was a run that made the Lejon Johnson rumors pick up.
"Lejon would have made that a huge play. We need him. Bring back the mobile QB dynamic, " a sports radio host spoke after the game.
The Raiders advance to 4-0 on the year with the win and knock the Chiefs to 1-3.
