Early Lead for Giants Too Much for Weeden & Co. to Overcome
East Rutherford, NJ - The offense stumbled in the first quarter, Brandon Weeden through a pick six and that’s all Eli Manning and the defending Super Bowl champs would need to open a 24-point lead in the first half Sunday.
Weeden’s fourth interception of the year came on third and long when he tried to float it over the middle to Josh Cooper.
“I saw a brief opening and tried to thread the needle,” said Weeden “I obviously forced the throw thinking we were already down 17 to nothing at that point. I was just trying to make something happen and I made a bad situation worse and I can’t do those things.”
To begin the second half the Browns defense gave the team a spark by sacking Eli Manning for a safety, although the momentum would be short lived. After a quick 3-and-out Manning delivered the back breaker; a 79-yard bomb to Victor Cruz.
“We wanted to be more aggressive in the second half, we felt we were giving up too much underneath early,” said Sheldon Brown who Cruz beat on the play “we were in press coverage on that play and I got beat, plain and simple.”
Trent Richardson continued his stellar rookie season by eclipsing the century mark for the third time, while scoring his fifth rushing touchdown of the year.
Cleveland scored 24 of the final 27 points in the game but the early deficit was just too much to overcome as Cleveland could not move to 4-1 on the season. And to add insult to injury the Browns, already thin at the cornerback position, lost newly acquired Alphonso Smith for a considerable amount of time with a broken collarbone.
The Browns now shift their focus to avenging their only other loss of the season against the Cincinnati Bengals at home in week six.
