Tuesday marks an off day on the schedule for the San Diego Chargers, but the front office remained busy, signing cornerback Crezdon Butler. In a corresponding move, the team released defensive cornerback William Middleton.

Originally a fifth round selection (164th overall) out of Clemson by the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2010, Butler has spent time in the Steel City as well as with the Washington Redskins, Arizona Cardinals, and most recently, the Buffalo Bills. He played in six games in 2012 for the Bills, primarily on special teams. He had one defensive tackle and two special teams stops. This preseason, he appeared in three games with one start, totaling five tackles, five passes defensed and one interception.

The 6-1, 191-pounder has appeared in 13 games during his first three years in the NFL. He missed the majority of the 2011 season after dislocating his ankle, and then was forced to miss some time last year as well due to a hamstring injury.

Butler played collegiately at Clemson alongside fellow Chargers defensive back, Marcus Gilchrist. A three-year starter, he was a key member of a defense that ranked in the top 15 in the country in pass defense each year. Butler is tied for second in school history with 243 career interception return yards. He made 40 consecutive starts for the Tigers, the second-longest streak in school history for a cornerback.
