    Game Notes
Off to Hartford we go, the Green Wave will look to add another win to their resume in order to stay in the thick of the BCS Race. While National Championship hopes are still a ways away, a 7th win on the year would be a step in that direction. This game is also important for them, as they have the Cincinnati Bearcats coming to town next week, in what'll likely be the AAC Conference Championship game. UC is 5-1 in conference play, so a win @ UConn will contribute to the Tulane cause. It's Homecoming in East Hartford though, and the Huskies will want to put up a fight in front of their home crowd.

      Chris Davis: Homecoming

When Chris Davis committed to Tulane at the end of last season, it was the end of a long & hard recruiting period. The Willimantic, CT native wanted to go to school close to home but didn't get many offers. It wasn't until Tulane head coach Kaelyn Willingham began recruiting him in the offseason that Davis finally got looks. Looking back at it, traveling over 1000 miles to New Orleans was well worth the journey.

Chris Davis: "I would have loved to attend UConn. Or BC, or Syracuse. But none of those schools gave me any consideration. I'm gonna work hard to make sure they wished they did."

Davis grew up in a rough upbringing. The eldest son of a single-parent household, Davis often found himself being a father figure to his younger brothers & sisters. Life wasn't easy for them, as the family lived paycheck-to-paycheck.

Davis: "I learned early in life to never take anything. Whenever an opportunity is handed to you, you take it and run with it. Even if it means leaving behind those you love so much."

Determined not to become another failed "statistic", Chris payed attention in school, earned good grades, and played football to get away from his home life. His neighbors played a role in this too.

Davis: "Our next-door neighbor was the high school football coach. One day he saw me playing catch outside with the other neighbor kids and told me I should try out for the team. It only took one workout, and the next day I was a wide receiver."

Chris joined the varsity football team his sophomore year, and didn't play much. His junior year he broke out, catching over 50 passes & 10 touchdowns. He was on the Senior Watch List for top-level Connecticut high school football talent. His senior year was by far his best; nabbing over 100 catches & over 1500 yards receiving, Davis found himself ranked in the ESPN 150 for 2018. A 4-star recruit, you'd think he'd have a lot of scholarship offers. But surprisingly, there were none. Rutgers, Penn State, his home-state school of UConn all gave him some looks but none offered. Thanksgiving was approaching, and he didn't know where he'd play college football. Or even if he'd play college football at all.

Then a head coach from New Orleans came calling.

Kaelyn Willingham: "I knew our team needed a wide receiver for the upcoming season. We had Aaron Gandy graduating, Justin Fountain graduating, and Jason Eaton would likely be moving outside. I wanted another slot guy, and I found one in Chris Davis."

The head coach of the Tulane Green Wave came calling, and Davis wasn't interested at first. He hadn't gone far away from home before, and he was really close with his family. But it was one visit to Connecticut by the coaching staff, and Chris was hooked.

Davis: "I loved the campus, I loved the academics, I loved the coach. I loved the offense we were running, cuz I could get the ball in a number of ways. It all just seemed right."

His family was reluctant too for him to go away at first. But he remembered the message his mom always told him: Never turn down an opportunity. He traveled all the way to the Deep South, and hasn't regretted it since.

Now a freshman on the Tulane football team, he's already making an impact. With over 500 total yards & 5 touchdowns on the season, Coach Willingham is happy he made an investment in an otherwise forgotten recruit.

Willingham: "I think this kid's gonna be a star. I don't think people realized how good he was coming out of high school."

Davis: "I bet UConn wishes they did!"

And now the "freshman phenom" will return to his home state this weekend as Tulane looks to keep their hopes for a conference title alive. Chris's family watches all his games on TV, and will be there in person when the Green Wave take on the UConn Huskies.

Tanya Davis (Chris's mom): "We used to be an all-Husky house. Now we're all Green Wave!"

Chris Davis scoring a TD early in the year against Memphis.

Re: Tulane Football: "From Worst to First"

        Yardage For Days

Wave pummel Huskies to the tune of 720 yards offense

It was an offensive explosion on show in East Hartford, CT, as the Green Wave ran wild on the Huskies of UConn. Both teams combined for over 1200 yards of offense in this one, but the Tulane defense was the difference-maker with 4 takeaways on the evening. We'll get things started in the First Quarter, where really most of the action took place.

Bryan Higgins got things going in the game, leading the troops downfield before freshman tailback T.C. Pickens punched it in from 7 yards out. After a UConn turnover Higgins would get the ball back, and connect with Jason Eaton on an 80-yd deep route for six. 14-0 just like that. The Dawgs would respond however, as QB Ryan Davis would lead UConn on an 80-yd drive that would end with a Kevin Bush TD run. Bryan Higgins would get knocked out of the game on a read-option play on Tulane's next drive, and Adam Barnes would have to come in to pinch hit. Didn't take him long to get going though, as he & Connecticut native Chris Davis would connect on a 61-yd option play that would go the distance. The stat-book counted that as a passing play, making it the second time this season those two would connect for a score. UConn would respond again, with Ryan Davis finding FB Garrett Hawk in the flat for six. And just before the quarter would end, Adam Barnes would run another option play, this time pitching it to FB Marco Washington. The senior fullback would take the pitch 42 yards to pay-dirt (this time a rushing TD), making the play the longest of Washington's career. A high-scoring First Quarter would end with Tulane owning a 28-14 lead, and both teams putting up nearly 500 total yards of total offense.

EVERYONE got involved in the running game in this one. RB, QB, WR, even the FB.

Higgins would be ruled out for the game with a mild concussion, and he'll be evaluated by team doctors before next week's contest. In the meantime, Barnes & Crew would keep up the pace. Barnes & Chris Davis would connect for a second time in the air, this time a 25-yd TD strike. Then Barnes would run in on a QB keeper the following drive. UConn would score again on the legs of Kevin Bush, but Tulane would have the last laugh of the half; this time coming from the voice of HB Josh Williams. 49-21 at the break, and the Husky faithful are wondering why their team is so bad on defense.

The second half would see a stark drop in points but not in yards. Both teams would keep the ball moving, but only 10 points were scored (all by Tulane). Barnes would throw his third TD of the game, this time to receiver Chris Gandy, and Zach McGee would tack on a 37-yd FG. Both teams would play out the stretch calmly, though UConn was clearly upset that they put up a poor performance for their Homecoming. By the Fourth Quarter, Tulane had put in all its backups, including 3rd-string QB Cam Jackson. Jackson led the 2nd-string offense on a couple of drives but didn't score, as much-needed play time was given to the likes of Corey Brown, Eric Foreman, Stephen Randle & Joe Johnson. Those guys will likely be key contributors on offense for Tulane in 2019, so it's better to get them reps now while they can. Jackson didn't throw a pass but did run the ball a few times. Ryan Davis finished with over 400 yards for UConn, and the Huskies had 4 receivers with at least 5 catches. But it was 4 INTs thrown by Davis that prevented UConn from making this game any bit close. Green Wave win it 59-21, and are now 4-0 after the loss to Northwestern.

Adam Barnes looked good running the offense in relief of Bryan Higgins.

The Wave return home for one of their biggest games of the year. Cincinnati comes to town for what looks to be the de-facto AAC Championship Game. While the winner of that one won't win the conference outright immediately, the winner will be in the driver seat to do so. UC comes into that game at 6-2 (6-1 AAC), their sole conference loss coming to Houston two weeks ago. It'll be Senior Day on the Tulane campus, and some key recruits might stop by for a visit. Bryan Higgins will be checked out by team doctors for his concussion, but should be a go for the Cincy game. It'll be a big weekend on campus next week.

The Army Black Knights needed to keep winning to have any hopes of playing for the BCS National Championship in January. Those chances may be all but dashed after failing to put away the Air Force Academy in a battle for the Commander-In-Chief Trophy. The running game worked wonders as usual for Army, but their defense gave up big plays at key moments in the game. Despite having only 294 yards of offense, Air Force capitalized on 7 key Army penalties to put them in spots to score. Falcons win it 21-17, and find themselves ranked in the BCS Poll.

Penn State came into the game ranked 2nd in the nation (their highest ranking in a long time). It was a back-and-forth contest the whole way, with a lot of scoring coming in the first half. Down 28-13 at the break, the PSU running game would bring it to within 5 in the Fourth Quarter. But Jon House was too much to handle. The Buckeye RB toted the rock for 190 yds & 3 TDs in the game, helping OSU put it away 35-30.

                Game Notes
Senior Day arrives early this year on the Tulane campus, as the Green Wave host the Cincinnati Bearcats in what looks to be the de-facto Conference Championship Game. UC comes into the game with a 6-2 mark, having played all but one of their games so far in-conference. They haven't beaten any major teams and their one conference loss is to Houston. Tulane views this as a must-win game, as it doesn't appear that either they or the Bearcats have a tough conference game remaining on their schedules. UC does have two tricky games coming against Rice & 3rd-ranked Ohio State. The Green Wave have only SMU, UCF & East Carolina after this, which makes this game a must-win if they want to win The American title and stay in line for a BCS berth. The Green Wave are undefeated in AAC play so far at 5-0, but the Bearcats are at an impressive 6-1. Tulane has 14 seniors on its squad this year, and they want to send them off right. We'll also get a glimpse of the future of Tulane football, as Coach Willingham announced that 2 key recruits will be visiting campus this week.

Re: Tulane Football: "From Worst to First"

                  American adds 5 for 2020

Realizing that his conference would be short 3 members for the 2020 season, AAC Commissioner Mike Aresco had to make some moves. He and his member presidents had a decision to make. Should they replace the three members with three others in new markets? Or should they expand even further in hopes of gaining a Conference Championship Game?

The conference chose the latter. The AAC announced today that they have extended invitations of membership to 5 schools, and all have accepted. They added two schools from C-USA, two schools from the MAC, and one independent. The schools they have added are Army, Navy, UMass, Marshall & Tulsa. While none of these schools claim large television markets, they are all reputable brands that will help the conference gain a Conference Championship Game for 2020. With these moves the MAC now sits at 12 members, while C-USA sits at 10. Aresco spoke about the moves today at a press conference.

Mike Aresco (AAC Commissioner): "We liked our conference the way it was at 10 schools. But when Tulane, Cincinnati and Memphis decided to jump ship we had to act fast. We feel these five schools will fit into the fold very well and will stabilize our conference going forward. We may lose some revenue in the short-term by losing the New Orleans, Cincy & Memphis TV markets, but having a conference championship game should mitigate that loss in the long run."

The conference hasn't announced possible division lineups but it is expected that they will employ a "North-South" alignment. Here's how that could possibly look:

AAC North: Army, Navy, UConn, UMass, Temple, Marshall

AAC South: East Carolina, South Florida, Central Florida, Houston, SMU, Tulsa

                    Taking The Cake

Wave outlast Bearcats in shootout, take AAC lead

The Green Wave of Tulane went into this week's game with the Cincinnati Bearcats knowing they needed a win to stay in the hunt for the AAC crown. In front of thousands on Senior Day, they did just that with a 17-pt victory. In a game that saw a lot of offense (expectedly) and a lot of big plays, the Green Wave did just enough on the defensive side to ensure the win. The game was 10-10 after the First, in which both teams felt each other out. Then Tulane put its foot down in the Second, tallying 21 points en route to a 31-17 lead at the break. The scoring at this point would begin to settle down but there were no shortage of big plays. 38-20 after three, Cincy began to air it out in an attempt to get back in the game. QB C.J. Haynes had been well-stymied by the Wave defense to this point, but as the Tulane coaching staff scaled back their defense he took advantage. Haynes would cut the lead to 10 after scampering in himself from 6 yards out, but the Wave would respond. Bryan Higgins had a good day leading the Tulane Offensive, and did so one last time. Junior RB Josh Williams would take the hand-off out from under-center, dance his way through the line, and dart past defenders on his way to a 37-yd touchdown run. That would essentially ice the game at 45-28, as the Bearcats could no longer move the ball from that point on. The Wave are now 8-1, and hold a commanding 6-0 lead in the conference race (UC is 6-2).

Coach Willingham spoke after the game about his players' effort.

Kaelyn Willingham: "We knew coming into this game that we were gonna have to fight hard for a victory. Cincinnati's got a good team and they're 6-3 for a reason. But our players gave a ton of effort and deserved to win."

Bryan Higgins also spoke about his team's will to win.

Bryan Higgins: "I'm blessed to be a part of a group of guys like this, and I know the best is only ahead. We still got a lot of games left to get where we wanna be, but I know we'll get there. Cuz all we do is win."

Tulane did a good job of sending its seniors out right on Senior Day, and it might have even impressed a few recruits in town for a visit. Coach Willingham says that recruiting has gone well this year, and he'll speak on that soon. In the meantime, the Green Wave have three games left, all on the road. The first one is @ SMU, in Dallas. The Mustangs are having the hardest of hard times this season, having yet to win a game at 0-8. The Green Wave shouldn't get cocky, but a win here is most likely. After that, trips to UCF & East Carolina.

Gonna skip the in-depth posts for the last few games, in an attempt to catch up on things. I've already played two of the last three games, and only minor things changed, which I'll write up in one post. Just trying to get to the end of the season.

Po1soNNN: Your boy Chris Davis from Willimantic, CT is the man. He's got over 700 total yards & 7 TDs in just 28 touches of the ball. Here's his freshman year stat-line:

                        12 car, 374 yds, 1 TD

                          Instant Update

The last three games all went well for the Green Wave, winning out and finishing the regular season with an 11-1 record. With Conference Championship Week coming up, it's time for Tulane to kick back & relax, and see where their bowl positioning lines up.

Week 12: @ SMU - This game had shootout written all over it. Until Tulane decided to score 28 straight points & put their foot down. Coming out of halftime with a 31-10 lead, T.J. Gray put it away for good with a 34-yd pick-six at the start of the second half. Bryan Higgins had a career day passing, with 247 yds in the air. With over 500 yards on the day, the offense ho-hummed to a 58-20 victory.

Week 13: @ Central Florida - This game was a massacre. Tulane started fast and never let up, scoring a whopping 69 points! That mark is the highest in the Kaelyn Willingham era. UCF could do nothing on offense as the Wave blitz kept QB Brad Gray on his back all game. Meanwhile the Tulane Offensive did everything, with a second-straight game of running & passing for over 200 yards. Higgins had another 200-yd passing affair and added 63 yds & a TD on the ground. Josh Williams also put up some good numbers (10 rush, 83 yds, TD). Tulane wins it, 69-3.

Week 14: @ East Carolina - This game was closer than expected, but it makes sense. ECU head coach Lionel Washington worked under Tulane head coach Kaelyn Willingham as defensive coordinator, and this game was his first against his former employer (and his alma mater). Despite the Pirates coming into the game at 3-8, they put up a heck of an effort. After dominating UCF the Wave defense struggled against ECU, as Brandon Richardson tossed 4 touchdowns & nearly 400 yards. ECU also ran the ball decently well. But Tulane's offense did the usual, with a third straight 500-yd performance. This time around Tulane didn't throw for 200; heck, they barely passed for 50! Behind an overpowering rushing attack the Green Wave stymied the Pirate defense. To the tune of 457 rushing yards! Bryan Higgins & T.C. Pickens led the charge, each with over 150 yds & a TD on 17 carries. Josh Williams added 2 touchdowns of his own, and the Green Wave escaped Greenville, NC with a 42-32 win.

                            Marshall? Really?
Despite playing a week MAC schedule (and an even weaker non-conference schedule), the BCS Poll has the Marshall Thundering Herd at #3 in this week's standings. One spot behind them are the Ohio State Buckeyes, who have played a much better Big Ten schedule and have more impressive wins. It seems the poll values Marshall's 11-0 record more than OSU's 1 loss. But with two power conference teams ranked ahead of them in the standings (and even more below them), do the Herd stand a chance at playing for a National Title?

                            Tulane's close.
The Green Wave need a few upsets to happen for them to have a shot at defending their national title from last year. Not having a conference championship game to play in hurts them. But they do appear to be a lock for a BCS at-large bid. With impressive wins over LSU & Miami (FL) out-of-conference, and a dominating 9-0 run in-conference, pollsters have them projected to play Ohio State in the Rose Bowl Game. Barring an upset, they'll be heading to Pasadena for the second-straight year.

                              Recruiting Insider

                              2018 class coming together well

Tulane doesn't look to have a big class to boast in 2018, but there are some key recruits who could contribute soon.

Currently Tulane is actively recruiting 4 players. Charlie King (#17 G) reigns from the nation's capital, and really likes what Tulane brings to the table in terms of campus lifestyle, academics & coaching. While he'd prefer to play in a power conference right out the gate, he's content with playing a year in the American Athletic before Tulane heads to the ACC in 2020. Tulane loves his run blocking ability and strength. He has great burst off the line and takes great care of his body. Even better, he's also a capable pass blocker for those times when Tulane gets away from its run-first attack. The team's also really high on 4-star CB Sidney Walker from Nashua, NH, who surprisingly isn't getting many looks from big-name programs. Walker is a huge fan of Coach Willingham, both as a play-caller and a winner. He also loves New Orleans. He isn't the most academically-oriented, so he'll have to step his game up in that department. But for a CB with incredible measurables as a freshman (84 MCV, 87 ZCV, 81 Press), he'd most definitely get early playing time if he signed on. He's an instinctive defensive back with great speed & burst.

Both King & Walker have yet to sign LOI's with the Green Wave, but look to be headed in that direction. Meanwhile, Tulane has added 8 others to its 2018 class. Most notable is Steven Foster from Skokie, IL. He is ranked by ESPN as this year's #1 punter in the nation.

                                Conference Championship Week

Rice & Southern Miss met in the C-USA championship game in Hattiesburg, MS, and it was all Golden Eagles. The homefield advantage played a hige role in the win, in addition to Tony Wilson's 268 passing yards & 2 TDs. Reggie Tremblay also played a role with 153 yds & 2 TDs on the ground. Southern Miss takes it, 35-16.

A date in the Orange Bowl awaited the winner of the ACC Championship, and Clemson took full advantage. Behind a balanced attack on offense and a stout defense, the Tigers put away Miami (FL), 49-27. Key performer in this one was Clemson QB Justin Williams with 5 passing touchdowns.

                                #7 (10-2)#1 (11-0)

"Win and we're in" was Georgia's mantra coming into the SEC Championship, and LSU proved it wouldn't be easy. Despite having practically a homefield advantage in Atlanta, the top-ranked Bulldogs had to fight their way in this game. In the end, it wasn't meant to be. LSU put up a strong second half and took down the nation's #1, 45-38. LSU heads to New Orleans for the Sugar Bowl while Georgia's hopes for a national title berth are all but over.

                                #14 (10-2)#2 (12-0)

While Georgia struggled to fend off LSU in the SEC title game, Oregon made little work of the Utes in the Pac-12 title game. Despite not playing the best game offensively, and giving up more than enough yards on defense, Chip Kelly's boys kept Utah out of the endzone all but one time, en route to a 28-7 victory. They're all but in the National Title game, with a chance to avenge last year's loss.

                                #3 (11-0)

The MAC Championship wasn't even a contest. NIU scored the first 3 points but Marshall scored the next 30. Neither team put up much offense in this one but the Thundering Herd defense made the difference. Final score 30-3. Marshall is likely headed to the BCS Title Game to face Oregon, in what'll likely be a controversial matchup.

Behind a heavy rushing attack and a stout D, the Aztecs made little work of the Air Force, 42-14. Two 100-yd rushers led the way for San Diego State, as they'll head to Fort Worth for the Armed Forces Bowl.

                                #5 (10-1) #4 (11-1)

This game was a classic. C-L-A-S-S-I-C. Down 10, Ohio State needed a big 4th Quarter to get back in the game. And they would do just that. QB Jacob Rice would lead the charge before throwing the game-tying TD. Tied at 24, the game went to OT. Both teams traded FGs before OSU added a touchdown. Nebraska responded with a touchdown of their own, BUT THE KICKER MISSED THE EXTRA POINT!!! Game over, Buckeyes win 34-33! OSU could be headed to the Rose Bowl. Or maybe the BCS Title Game...
