Northwestern was a good game. Frustrating at times, but good. Hopefully once we join the ACC, all our games will be like that.

Honestly, when I released this year's schedule, I knew non-conference play would be tough. Funny thing is, I thought that this game would be the 1 of the 3 that I'd win. When we beat LSU & Miami, I thought another 12-0 season was in the books. But, this is why they play the games .

It's too bad you lost that one because now you'll lose two this season, with the UConn game looming.

          TOP STORIES

Carl Osi'osi Commits to Rice Owls
One of the Operation Sports' CAP recruits has announced his commitment for his college football career. Carl Osi'osi, the #23 QB in the 2019 class, has officially committed to the Rice Owls after also receiving an offer from the defending national champs, Tulane Green Wave. The El Paso, TX native wanted to stay close to home and feels he will fit right in with the Owls' offense. Rice head coach David Bailiff is excited to have him aboard; Tulane head coach Kaelyn Willingham is disappointed he didn't land the dual-threat QB. Osi'osi is the first CAP recruit to commit thus far.

          Army getting first-place votes?
After a convincing 27-17 victory in Norman, Oklahoma this past weekend, the Army Black Knights rose to #10 in this week's Coaches Poll. But surprisingly, one voter thought enough of the cadets at West Point, that he decided to give the team a first-place vote. Whoever that guy is may have bias, but can the Cadets really compete against the likes of Oregon, Clemson or Nebraska?

Texas State DE has a "Game for the Ages"
It's not very often we hear about players from the Sun Belt Conference making headline news, but Texas State DE Scott Douglas this just that on Saturday with his all-star performance. The red-shirt senior collected 16 tackles, including a whopping 12 tackles for loss & 4 sacks. Sure, it may not have been against the greatest of offensive lines, but Douglas' performance certainly caught the attention of SportsCenter, who made him one of their "Stellar Athletes of the Week." Texas State was able to defeat conference foe Louisiana-Monroe over the weekend.

                An Unprecedented Trade

ACC, Big 12 to swap members Louisville, West Virginia

As many experts predicted, the ACC's additions of Notre Dame & Tulane would spawn a new wave of conference realignment. The next domino to fall, however, was one no one expected at all.

ESPN reports that both the ACC & Big 12 conferences have agreed to a sort of "trade", in which the University of Louisville and West Virginia University will switch conferences. This means that, effective July 1, 2020, Louisville will be a member of the Big 12, while West Virginia will be a member of the ACC. Both conferences say that the move is due primarily to geography, but also economics. While both schools have had success in their respective conferences, monetarily they haven't brought in as much as expected. West Virginia's primary rivals all compete in the ACC, while Louisville's rivals are in the American Athletic Conference. Experts believe this has caused a slight drop in interest in both school's sports programs.

Despite economics, the move is primarily geographic in nature. West Virginia's closest Big 12 rival is Iowa State, over 700 miles away. Add in the road games they play in Texas (over 1000 miles away) and it's a travel nightmare for all parties involved. Louisville's closest ACC rival, Virginia Tech, is over 400 miles away; their other ACC mates are well over 500 miles in distance. Both schools agree that the swap in conference membership will benefit them going forward. Both conference commissioners agree.

John Swofford (ACC Commissioner): "We appreciate what Louisville has brought to our conference over the past 4+ years, and wish them the best in the Big 12."

Bob Bowlsby (Big 12 Commissioner): "West Virginia was a worthy member of our conference, but we feel that their move to the ACC will benefit them long-term. Bring on Louisville!"

The Big 12's addition of Louisville could likely be the first of many moves made by the conference as they attempt to get back to 12 members strong. As mentioned earlier, Louisville's historic rivals (Cincinnati and Memphis) are currently in the American Athletic Conference. Did the Big 12 add Louisville in an attempt to sway Cincinnati & Memphis to join as well? That all remains to be seen.

Louisville and West Virginia will officially swap conferences on July 1, 2020.

                  Hawai'i Going Indy

While Louisville's and West Virginia's travel problems are relatively new, the University of Hawai'i has dealt with travel problems for years. Being hundreds of miles off the Mainland, it isn't easy for the Rainbow Warriors to schedule out-of-conference opponents. Their conference affiliation only mitigates the problem a little bit. Because of the costs associated with teams traveling to Aloha Stadium, the NCAA instituted a rule years back that allowed teams traveling to Hawai'i to schedule an extra home game (thus allowing for 13 regular season games). In an attempt to end this problem once-and-for-all, the university has announced that they will leave the Mountain West Conference in 2020 and seek independence. Independence in football, that is. Since the Warriors joined the MWC in 2012 as a football-only member, their Olympic sports have participated in the Big West Conference. Hawai'i will continue to associate with the Big West in Olympic sports, but the football program will compete as an independent.

Ben Jay (Hawai'i AD): "The University of Hawai'i has dealt with enormous travel expenses in our athletics program for decades. We enjoy our membership in the Mountain West Conference, but feel that independence is the best way to ensure the continuation of our football program. Independence will allow us to schedule opponents closer to home, while also ensuring that we provide our fans with as competitive a schedule as possible. We also hope that free scheduling will allow us to bring many top-rate football programs to Aloha Stadium."

Jay said jokingly during the press conference, "Who wouldn't enjoy a trip to the Islands!". Hawai'i will officially become a football independent on July 1, 2020.

                      Oregon falls despite dominating UCLA
The Oregon Ducks came into their game with the UCLA Bruins at #1 in the standings, for the first time since last year's National Championship game. They were expected to win easily, and they did. The Ducks dominated UCLA 48-14, en route to a 5-0 start. Yet despite the loss, Oregon slipped to #3 in the Coaches Poll, and lost all but 1 of their first-place votes. What happened??? It may have likely been Clemson's utter destruction of a flailing Miami team, as well as Ohio State's rise after beating then-#3 Nebraska. But still, Oregon Duck fans have a right to be upset this morning.

Kentucky chokes away 23-pt lead, falls to 0-5
The Kentucky Wildcats haven't at all had a dream season so far in 2018. The Wildcats have started off 0-4, including 0-2 in SEC play. This week they had a chance to put away 2-1 South Carolina, and they almost did. Kentucky opened the game with a 35-12 lead, and were feeling confident. It was 35-19 after three before the Gamecocks went on the march. Scoring 24 points in the final 15 minutes, including the game-winning TD with 0:03 left on the clock, South Carolina survived an upset, 43-42. The Gamecocks pounded the running game to 299 yds & 6 TDs. Rather than winning the game, Kentucky fell to 0-5 on the season.

Tulane adds Illinois to Honor Roll Series

The Tulane Athletic Office has announced a new addition to the Honor Roll Series. Tulane has reached an agreement with the Illinois Fighting Illini to play one game as part of the Series. The University of Illinois has excellent programs in the Math & Science fields, which meshes very well with Tulane's esteemed Medical School. Both schools are ranked in the Top 50 in the latest US News & World Report rankings on America's top institutions. An exact date for the game has not been set, but the game will be played in either 2019 or 2020. The game will be played at Illinois' Memorial Stadium in Champaign, IL.

Rick Dickson (Tulane AD): "We're very excited to add Illinois to our Honor Roll Series. The Series so far has been a huge success for all schools involved, as Tulane University has engaged in new research opportunities with many institutions. We hope that the Green Wave & Illini continue their winning ways on the football field, and we look forward to a fantastic game in Champaign."

The Green Wave look to put the loss in the Honor Roll Game behind them, as they hit the road to Houston to take on the Cougars. Tulane-Houston has become a marquee matchup in the American Athletic Conference since both schools joined in 2013 & 2014. Both teams are regularly among the top of the AAC Standings, and this year that's no different. QB Daniel Walker missed the Cougars' last few games with injury, but looks to be a go for this week. As usual Houston's pro-style offense will feature the running game, led by senior HB Cameron White. They also like to utilize FB Matt Richardson in the run game as well. In addition they have a quality TE in John Hand who can stretch the field.

Though Josh Williams has led the way in the running department for Tulane this season, Coach Kaelyn Willingham plans to scale back his carries in an effort to incorporate more into the offense, namely RB T.C. Pickens. Pickens runs the ball well in the Pistol formations, so expect to see him used in that capacity. They also want to get the ball in the hands of the receivers more, as Jason Eaton & Chris Davis are dangerous on the outside. Expect QB Bryan Higgins to throw the ball more than usual.

A close game is expected in this nighttime outing, with the winner in good shape in the American Athletic Conference standings.

                                Note to Readers:

                                1) I've been away on vacation since this past weekend visiting friends (and handling a little business). Gonna try to catch up on Tulane/Outlaws updates between now & tomorrow.

                                2) In recent years I've been looking for a new sport to follow after football season ends. And I might have found that sport in hockey. For $8 I went out and bought NHL 12 at GameStop yesterday, and I'm already having a lot of fun with it. If I learn the rules of hockey well enough, I may buy NHL 15 sometime in the future (though a lot of people tell me it's crappy). We may be looking at a Columbus Blue Jackets dynasty on OS sometime in the future. Though that would be well down the road .
