    Recruiting Insider

    November 13, 2019
    The Roll Wave Report

Pleasantville, New Jersey's own Rob Jennings was the first player to commit to the Tulane Recruiting Class of 2019 six weeks ago. Since then Coach Willingham has received commitments from 6 other players, including a few guys The Roll Wave Report previously mentioned.

    Local talent reigns supreme
A few guys from the immediate vicinity are OLB Lance Avery, WR Anthony Thomas, FS Tim Dean. Avery originates from right here in Louisiana, and is a player Willingham feels will add depth to his linebacking rotation in the coming years.

Coach Willingham: "Lance is a guy we're really excited to add to our ranks. He's an instinctual linebacker who has a great eye for the field. We're glad to pair him with [Billy Brittain]."

The other player Coach mentioned in that quote was fellow OLB Billy Brittain, from Olympia Heights, FL. Brittain is a 3-star recruit not heavily recruited by other schools. Only Tulane & Alabama pursued him much. He chose New Orleans over Tuscaloosa due to nightlife, academics & Tulane's move the ACC for next season. He'd have to fight for playing time his freshman year, but Willingham loves his raw athleticism & punishing hit power. He could be a great blitzing linebacker down the road.

Anthony Thomas will have the chance to play right away as a true freshman, as both Chris Gandy & Jason Eaton graduate this spring. He doesn't have the greatest hands, but he's exactly what Coach covets in a slot receiver: speed, athleticism & running ability. Look for his opportunities to come in the form of jet sweeps, the Option game & some bubble screens. Tim Dean is a project player who needs development, but has great potential. He's a box safety at best right now, better at stopping the run than defending the pass. But with good coaching, he has the skills to anchor the secondary.

    Recruiting the East Coast
Being a member of the American Athletic Conference since 2014 has allowed Tulane to recruit decently along the East Coast. It worked as long as Coach Willingham promised road trip games @ Temple, UConn & Cincinnati. Now with Tulane heading to the Atlantic Coast Conference next year, they'll be able to recruit the East Coast even better. What better a recruiting pitch than to promise games @ Boston College, Pittsburgh, Notre Dame & Florida State? Tulane's recruiting will likely change big-time with the ACC move, but expect Coach to stick to his principles.

Willingham: "I love the new recruiting territories the ACC move will afford us. We can now recruit Maryland, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania. States we didn't have access to in the past, but now we will with the ACC move. Not many players will turn down a road trip to Notre Dame."

Despite the roaring success Tulane has achieved over the past few years, Willingham has stuck to his guns on academics & no tolerance for mischief. He kicked four players off the team before this season due to violations of the team's Conduct Policy, following a brawl at a house party. He also removed two other players in 2016 due to the academic cheating scandal involving the men's basketball team. Willingham says he may even strenghten his rules with the ACC move, as that conference has stricter recruiting policies than most.

Willingham: "It's got to be about academics, it's got to be about good behavior. These kids come to school for an education, and we want to give them that. But they've got to earn it. That includes playing football. You don't pass, you don't play. You don't follow the rules, you don't play."

The new East Coast recruiting territories have helped Coach gain hard commitments from T Patrick Hines (Forestville, MD) and K Tyrone McFarland (Fairfax, VA), in addition to Rob Jennings.

      A Historic Performance

Tulane shuts out SMU for largest win in school history

      November 17, 2019
      New Orleans Times-Picayune

Let's get a few things straight. There were a lot of records broken yesterday.
      • Largest win in Tulane football history (69-0).
      • SMU had -60 rushing yards. That's right, MINUS 60.
      • Tulane's defense sacked the quarterback 11 times (read above).
      • Tulane's offense had 9 rushing touchdowns.
      • Tulane possessed the ball for 40 minutes 16 seconds.
      • Tulane possessed the ball 10 times in the red-zone.
      • The 69-pt loss is the worst in SMU football history.

The Green Wave held an opponent scoreless for the 1st time in the Willingham Era (8 years). The offense had another 500-yd performance, making it the 7th time this season they eclipsed that mark. Four of their nine rushing scores came from Eric Foreman, who pictured above, was the second player this season to have 4 rushing TDs in a game. The Green Wave possessed the ball for over 40 minutes, mainly because the Mustangs could do nothing whenever they had the ball. Their first 5 possessions all ended in three-and-outs. Three of those drives involved sacks of QB Cedric Howard. Howard could get in no rhythm throughout the game as his offensive line was horrendous at pass-protecting. Even worse, the running game did nothing for SMU, as they only attempted to run 10 times.

Eric Foreman was a man among boys, with 4 TDs & 112 rushing yds.

The Option game was killer for Tulane, as three RBs tacked on the Wave's first four scores. Foreman scored first in the First Period, then Foreman, T.C. Pickens & fullback Bobby Willis all scored in the Second. Kicker Zach McGee tacked on a late-second FG as time expired, and the Green Wave took a 31-0 lead into the intermission. To this point in the game SMU had 49 yards offense. Things would get no better for the Mustangs, as the Wave offense kept rolling. Eric Foreman scored. Then Bobby Willis. Then Eric Foreman again. The "Speed Option" play out of Shotgun worked all game for Tulane, and Foreman capitalized. 48-0 after three. While Tulane was smothering, SMU was smothered. They quickly abandoned the running game, and Tulane sent the kitchen-sink blitz as a result. Cedric Howard continued to get pummeled in the pocket, as Tulane inched closer to a record-setting day rushing the QB.

This image summarizes Cedric Howard's day for SMU. Brutal.

Tulane's first-stringers would get pulled in the Fourth Quarter, and the offense STILL kept it moving. Cam Jackson, the Dash QB in the offense, proved why he's such a weapon. The RS junior killed it on the read-option, taking his first attempt 50 yds to SMU territory. His second attempt went 54 yds to the house. 62-0 Green Wave. His third attempt went 22 yds to paydirt. 69-0 Green Wave. That's it. 126 yds on just 3 carries, and 2 touchdowns. In the midst of all this running, RS freshman Michael Strong powered away for 40 rushing yds, getting much-needed minutes as a 4th-string RB. This game was an all-timer for Tulane, and they'll look to continue steamrolling teams as UCF comes to town next week.

Coach Willingham: "We've got a great thing going right now. The running game is strong, the defense is strong. We're playing the best we've played all year. Gotta keep it going as Central Florida comes to town next week for a key AAC game."

That was Willingham's post-game remarks to his players. As he mentioned, the Central Florida Knights head to the 'Dome next week for a game that could determine the AAC Champion. While UCF is only 6-4 on the year, all 6 of their wins are in conference play, putting them in prime position to shock everyone & win the AAC Crown. This is a must-win game for Tulane. Can the Wave keep rolling?

                Game Notes
With only two games left on the Regular Season slate, Tulane finds itself in a must-win situation as the UCF Knights come to town. UCF is 2nd in the American Athletic Conference standings despite a 6-4 record, as all six of their wins are in conference play. Despite Tulane having a 7-0 record in the AAC this season, they are only one game ahead of UCF in the standings. Ergo, this is a must-win game for the Wave.

Central Florida brings enough talent to the table to give Tulane fits. They return QB Brad Gray from last year, but they're without 4-yr starter R.J. Pittman at WR. Pittman graduated this past spring, and UCF's receiving corps is a shell of last year's group. Despite this, the strength of their team is the offense, as the defense ranks in the bottom half in most statistical categories. Tulane historically has done pretty well on the Knights offensively, evidenced by the Green Wave averaging over 40 ppg against them since joining the AAC. Expect more of the same from Tulane this year.

It's an interesting game on paper. But let's remember, this is the same team Tulane destroyed 69-3 last season (in Orlando, no less). Interesting tidbit: Tulane plans to wear its white helmet, green jersey, green pants combo. They haven't worn that uniform combo since 2016.

That slaughtering of SMU reminds of me of some of those games late in the season where a team has kind of quit on their coach or something and just rolls over. Yikes.

The thing is, they were 4-5 going into that game. They win out, they're going to a bowl. I guess SMU really hates its coach. Lol.

Is it June Jones? LOL. That would be kind of ironic to me.

June Jones got fired in 2013, after losing the Sugar Bowl to Florida. I know right, WTF?

Here are the head coaches in the AAC, as of right now.

                          AAC Champions!

Wave drowns UCF to win 3rd-straight conference title

                          November 24, 2019
                          New Orleans Times-Picayune

For the third straight game, Tulane had a record-setting performance defensively. And for the third straight season, the Green Wave are American Athletic Conference champions.

The Wave knocked off conference rival UCF in a 52-6 decision on Saturday, in a game where star QB Adam Barnes dominated. The junior amassed over 300 total yds & 6 TDs, vaulting himself higher in the Heisman race. The running game was overpowering, totaling 418 yds, and the defense was suffocating. For the third time this season, the Green Wave broke the school's single-game sack record. This time, they also tied the NCAA single-game sack record with 15. Both UCF QBs couldn't get any rhythm going, and Tulane had easy pickings on defense.

Brad Gray started at QB for the Knights, and didn't last long in the game. Down 21-3, Gray tried to lead a late-half rally, but got crushed by Tulane LB Tom Grier. The hit was damaging, as Gray had to leave the game. Backup Cory Tate entered the game, and didn't fare much better. The pass rush was in his face all game, as the Knights O-line couldn't keep containment. Meanwhile the running game was invisible, as RB Ross McGee was held to less than 3.0 YPC. On the flip side, Adam Barnes was a menace. He was responsible for 6 of the team's 7 touchdowns on the afternoon, which included 4 on the ground. Barnes became the third Green Wave player this season to have 4 rushing TDs in a game (Bobby Willis & Eric Foreman are the other two). On the receiving front there isn't much to talk about. But Chris Davis did have 2 touchdowns.

Once again, Tulane's pass rush was killer, dominating UCF for 15 sacks.

Brad Gray was diagnosed with broken ribs after the game, and he'll miss the next 4 weeks for UCF. Knights HC Matt Limegrover was upset after the game when Adam Barnes ran for a 54-yd TD with the game well-in-hand. Coach Willingham said he didn't tell his team to run up the score, but sometimes these things happen.

Matt Limegrover (UCF HC): "I can deal with the loss, but they didn't have to run up the score on us like that. That's just classless."

Kaelyn Willingham (Tulane HC): "I didn't tell Adam to score on that last play, he just did. I would've preferred he slid & ran the clock out, but these things happen. You can call it 'style points'. I won't."

Anyway, the win puts Tulane at 11-0 on the year, one win short of a perfect regular season. The Green Wave have now won their 3rd AAC Title, becoming the first school in conference history to achieve that feat. Fans after the game were reported chanting "A-C-C! A-C-C!", in reference to Tulane's scheduled move to that conference next year. But first, Tulane faces East Carolina next week for Senior Day. They'll look to stay in the hunt for a BCS bid & potentially a National Title Game berth.

Coach Willingham: "I'm so proud of these guys for the way they fought this season. They truly deserve this conference championship."
