Re: The Career of J.D. Clark (NCAA 14)

Did you go through previous end of season or offseason file saves to go get those recruit star ratings? Or did you just make them up based on their current ability/class?

Why I ask: I got into a little kick of playing College Hoops 2K8 a few months ago and loved being able to RB over and see what kind of recruit a kid was right there (stars, overall rank, position rank, if they were an All-American or Mr. Basketball in their state, etc.) to go along with their career stats page and ratings page. It would have been something I would have loved to see implemented in NCAA Football, but obviously never happened.

Gotta love having five senior offensive linemen, I'm sure they'll be able to get some running lanes open and give the QB some time. Even if Barnes doesn't have a big arm, time for receivers to get open can be very valuable.

A little worried about the d-line and secondary, as you mentioned, but hopefully the linebackers led by Michael Tyson will be knocking fools out.

Not sure about what Hellisan does, but I have a file save of every "end of season" screen of my dynasty, so that I can go back and look at anything if i need to. It certainly comes in handy for stuff like this.

Bookwork and Rizzo, thanks bros I appreciate the insight. I agree it might be a tough season. On the other hand maybe we surprise! PS Rizzo, UMass is gonna get it extra hard, we have to make it look pretty. lol JK

Your roster is not as bad as I thought it would be. Obviously QB appears to be a problem area, but you have a nice enough supporting cast around him to perhaps be able to camouflage that position. I'm really excited about the running back Atkinson you have and how he'll look behind what appears to be a solid OL.

Cornerback and kicker are really going to kill you though, especially against the big boys of the Big 10.
I agree, the defensive depth is going to be really troubling in that backfield. And if injuries hit, we could really be screwed. A lot of the ground games in the Big Ten appear to be spread attacks now.

It seems like the perfect fit for Coach Clark and in many ways makes the story that much richer. Excited for this next chapter.
I agree, I always want to keep an element of smash mouth there. The way Coach Clark is shaping up is that I just want him to be an excellent all around offensive coach who is good at finding people to help him with the D. lol. On offense, he uses what he has on hand. On defense he yells at people. A lot. Thanks for checking in man always appreciated.

gsutiger on one hand I agree with you about the running game, but I don't think our passing game is going to be completely lost. So many good WR to throw to. I have five starting quality WR for the first time therefore worked in one true spread formation into the playbook which was can use on short yardage. The QB isn't good, but he's good enought to just make the easy tosses to open guys. And a lot of them will be open.

I just estimated it. LOL. With Idaho, I always had them blank for the players I inherited, but I've done enough recruiting now I bet they're pretty close. That's what I'm looking at is a good team on offense that first season. A lot of it is going to be how well we prepare on defense and if we can keep that secondary together with duct tape. Gonna be rolling injuries soon and praying for health there. lol.

          Thanks all

            2018 Recruiting Preview and Update

Some real talk and ramblings about the recruiting process, Iowa, and Idaho.

I went with a hard set of rules with Idaho, which I promptly began breaking when In noted that the classes were a little screwy in NCAA 14. Far too few 2-star players with any discernible talent, instead it appeared that the bottom half of the 3-stars should have been 2-stars because you rarely find studs in that bottom half. I promptly started breaking rules and never stopped, instead going more with a feel. Health nut talking heads on Youtube talk about going to "intuitive eating" sometimes when they don't feel like counting calories. I was going with "intuitive recruiting" in the end, and I intend to continue doing that.

Go primarily with players from the states I have pipelines in. Allow for the recruitment of better players if they are interested in Iowa. Keep a very tight reign (this time especially) on the number of players I start going after that have no interest from others schools. I want to keep this to about 1 a year. I can go after anyone on my board, but I can only cut one player from it and add a player. And preferably this player will be in my pipeline and make sense (not be a five-star, freak player). After that, players have to sign with other teams for me to start adding them to my board. With a couple exceptions per year, maybe. Again, intuitive!

Scouting process: I have never improved Coach Clark to more than 25% scouting per week. To me that seems semi realistic. This makes me want to scout players and enjoy that process, and obviously it hurts a bit in recruiting to be throwing points into scouting. Also, I almost never adjust my board based on the outcome of the scouting. As you may have read before I use ratings including ETH (Work Ethic) and CIT (citizenship) that I keep track of on my roster. I'm going to sim these ratings and keep them off to the side, only adding them to my "knowledge" of the player once he is fully scouted. This may be used as an excuse to stop recruiting him. But that will be rare. 1-2 guys a year max. When I take these guys off my board because of character or work ethic concerns I can then add another player that already has interest in Iowa, or a 3-star max player in the pipeline, or a 2-star max player outside the pipeline.

The bottom line is that I want this to be a story about a really good coach. A+ (now A after the move) reputation coaches can do more than your average coach in the early going at a new program. Look up Harbaugh, Jim.

After this move I have even more respect for the way this whole thing is set up in NCAA 14. Idaho is a 5-star school now. But in terms of the players that Iowa has attracted and what Idaho attracted this year it is very similar. Both in terms of talent and volume. Iowa is actually a bit better in both. I find this to be cool. I don't know if it's because Iowa is still understood to be a better school even despite the 2-star rating, or whether Coach Clark and his rep have something to do with that, all I know is that it's appreciated not to have to go to say EMU quality recruiting, when that wouldn't be realistic at Iowa.

I am digging the new newspaper layout, very crisp and realistic looking. Loving this!

                              News & Notes

Notes by Rudy Weiland, Cedar Rapids Gazette

Tyson Injured; May miss most of Season

Outside linebacker Michael Tyson struggled for much of the first game. In the
second half it appears there was a very good reason. Tyson injured his ankle badly
late in the third quarter. He tried to play through the pain, but sat out the last few
                              minutes of the game.

An examination of Tyson by the team doctors indicates he has likely more than a
typical sprain. Although they do not believe there is a broken bone, the injury does
appear to be serious, and Tyson is projected to miss significant time.

Backup center Aaron Stewart suffered a minor concussion in practice and will miss
next week's game. Stewart said he would probably play "If I was the starter."

                              James Hubbard grousing about PT

Wide receiver James Hubbard made a great touchdown catch in the first game of the
season. However, he is not satisfied with how many snaps he took and is projected
to take the rest of the season, and took to social media to voice discontent.

"Not happy with my role. I'm a starter in my eyes. This cannot stand. I demand a
safe space," complained Hubbard in a recent post.

Hubbard is an influential player in the locker room, and there is concern he could
be a difficult player for a new coach to have to deal with. His talent is obvious, and
as long as he stays with the team he'll be a clear cut starter next year. He could
even play his way toward more playing time this season if he keeps playing like he
did last week or one of the players ahead of him on the depth chart were to get
hurt. However, he is not likely to win influence with the new coaching staff with his
                              social media demands.

                              Record: 0-1 (0-0)

                              Vandals downed in Tuscaloosa, 35-42

Idaho once again proved willing to take on all comers in the football world. They
traveled to Alabama and fought the good fight, a 35-42 loss. Eric Lawson threw
three first-half touchdown passes and it was enough to go into halftime tied at
                              21 apiece.

Idaho took the lead momentarily in the third quarter, but Bama came surging back
with a pair of touchdowns to take the lead, then extended the lead to a two-score
game with a 23-yard touchdown pass. The Crimson Tide were able to slow down
the passing attack of the Vandals. Lawson did a good job avoiding turnovers,
however he was not able to keep making big plays in the second half. He finished
with 264 yards and 4 TD with 0 INT, but the Crimson Tide QB Paul Snyder went
                              30 for 44, 427, 2 TD, 2 INT in the win.
