Some of us come back from a hiatus and hope to make a bowl game (me) and others come back from a hiatus and win a Natty (you). Lol.

What a ride! Unbelievable job for the team to really come together on the biggest stage when they needed to! Halloway put together I'm sure the game of his life with three picks, and Norton was an absolute workhorse for you. Allen just did his usual job, and like you said previously, he may not have the numbers of a Heisman winning quarterback, but he's certainly got the intangibles and does exactly what you ask him to do while not making any mistakes in the process.

It's a huge win for you and the program, so enjoy this feeling! Especially because you may not be enjoying it so much when you have a target on your back in every game next year as the defending champs!

Congrats on the Natty. I am surprised Sanders folded under the bright lights, but even more so that Halloway wasn't the player of the game for his pick-sixes. Hopefully the off-season will be just as exciting as this season was.

Congrats on the title! What a win.

Regarding your defensive awards spreadsheet, I've been using it since you first posted about it but I haven't played around with the weights yet, but I like them. I feel like, I'd try to scale it so all three defensive sets (DB/LB/DL) are on the same scale -- i.e. 100 means average for all three so you can compare all of them and they're on the same scales, y'know? But I haven't dug into your newest sheet much, yet.

How do you decide who gets the Nagurski and who gets the Bednarik?

Thanks to everyone for their support and readership. This one was actually a big deal for me. I don't remember when the last natty was that I won, let's just say I don't think it was in NCAA 14... Or 13... Or 12.

Thank you Tearz. It has been a really fun season, plenty of close games and then the team just started to play well. To compound that, I found a Scuf controller on OfferUp and it said barely used, it was a Navy guy who is overseas, got a pretty good deal on it and it turned out to be an 8-way 100 (slow-turn checker) - I've always loved their controllers and good ones of any kind are difficult to find these days. It was like my team was supercharged in the final. Was it the controller money? If it's the controller I'll need to change the settings. lol.

Thanks Miles I appreciate it man! I'll be headed to the offseason and hope to haul in a couple more guys but like our little class just fine. I hope next year is a monstrous one.

              HUGE win.

Since I refuse to give you time to celebrate and bask in this... can you now deal with the weight of expectations in Iowa City? There will be a lot...they have nothing else going on there
LMAO - Coach Clark knows that as the first coach to win a title for Iowa since 1960, he has a little leeway. He's busy improving the recruiting base. Even though we did go with the slowest HC progression (thank the lord) the recruiting skills are getting pretty darn good, especially when you consider the scouting will forever be capped at 25% for "realism" and fun. In short... I think Coach Clark will love the challenge.

Thanks for the love BigSheen, I'll be catching up on the Dutchmen before long.

I have to give credit to the UGA squad as their pursuit was awesome. Even though they targeted the inside run on the QB read (we had to get Norton his carries the old fashioned way and he just earned them in game by powering through folks), they did not allow much in the way of big plays to Allen, none actually. They chased him straight down. So it was nice to see him play well, and the one mistake he made was a one-handed batdown instead of a pick. That helps. Hallloway bettered his full-year INT total. He had an interesting season. I quickly learned that he could not play more than a handful of snaps on offense without getting tired and took him off special teams which I had planned to play him on. He led the team in touchdown catches despite catching like 15-16 passes. He could be a stud at either position, and maybe as he grows, that snap count will too. I'd love to see him put together a Heisman worthy season, and see if the game will count the two-sided stats rightly. I hope we have a huge target on our back and have more great games next season, thanks Moose!

Thanks Trojan. It felt relatively tight until the end, and I expected them to drive down the field before he just threw one into the flat where Halloway was.. #what

Me too. We now have a history of humiliating Heisman winners... If not a history, at least a trend. I'll probably cover that later. It was a little surprising to see a player with such great ratings have such a poor game, but it happens. I love the offseason SO freaking much, I hope I can get my wife to make me my customary offseason meal of really unhealthy cheese and ham quesadillas with her amazing salsa. #fatguythoughts

Bro! Great to hear from you.

I appreciate the feedback on the scales. One thing I've been trying to do is weight them so that a great season at FS and a great season at DE (for instance) will have a similar total points number. I feel as though (and I'm not sure this is true) if I just have the same weights for all three major position groups, then one position will consistently have the highest number there. But as long as you're willing to compare the score of a player to, say, the mean of his position group, and then compare that "superiority" score to the score of the other positions' best players, then it would be just fine, and I think that's a good idea.

Since you have some interest in this, the biggest difference with the new sheet is that it's set up to take stats directly from the NCAA 14 stat page. So you can sort for tackles and just enter all the linebackers in excel with the data entry tip I posted in the dynasty HQ forum.... Or sort by sacks and enter all the DE, or... you understand.

Before I had it set up to enter the stats from the player info pages, and it was taking too long. Yeah, you get the occasional FS that had a ton of tackles or something when you're entering the linebackers, but overall it was MUCH MUCH faster. The vast majority of the time was spent re-doing the spreadsheet.

On the Nagurski vs. Bednarik... I do try and give some weight to the rankings there. For instance if they have a worthy candidate 2nd and one of my guys that didn't deserve it #1, I'll really consider that guy. I try to determine if there was a standout guy deserving both or if there were a couple guys deserving them, give some weight to the default rankings, and then just go with "it's an art not a science" and pick 'em. I'm usually just trying not to get confused and get it done in a reasonable amount of time. I would love to see more thoughts on this thing. Maybe now that it's more usable, I'll post it on the main board.

As always, thanks for checking in.

Thank you, sir! I appreciate having the chance to interact with you fine people and enjoya great game. I was honestly wondering if I would be able to win a title at this point..... Just a smidgen of concern that I would just lose one big one every year.

I am also very curious of what does and/or doesn’t happen if you don’t reset them. Never heard of this before. Incredible after all these years, I’m still learning things about this game lol.

                            2020: Season Overview

2020/2021: The 2020 season begins on page 96. In an interview before the season, Coach Clark specifically called out a few players that he expected to lead them in 2020. No predictions were made about the success of the team, but DaShawn Olden, Eddie Allen, and Kory Walker were some of the names Clark predicted would be leaders on the team and facilitate success. Clark also talked a lot about freshman cornerback D.J. Halloway who was lighting up practices. As it turned out, the Hawkeyes won their second official NCAA 14-endorsed championship by defeating the Georgia Bulldogs in the BCS National Championship. All of these players were key to the season. Olden was named the team MVP after being named an All American and paving the way for the awesome ground attack for the balanced offense in 2020. Allen was the key yard gainer, leading the team in both rushing and passing and accounting for a combined 37 touchdowns. Walker, unfortunately, missed most of the season with an injury but returned in time to join his teammates in winning the championship. Middle linebacker Brian McFadden continued his stat-stuffing ways and was named defensive MVP. Finally, "Weapon X" Halloway intercepted three passes and ran one back for a touchdown in the championship game to put a big exclamation point on what was otherwise a roller coaster of a season for the freshman - even if he did also lead the team in touchdown receptions on just 14 catches. The season began in familiar Kinnick against #24 Texas, where a fourth quarter was the field goal in a close win. The Longhorns would finish #2 in the nation, bouncing back from the loss in a big way, so this turned out to a be a huge win for the Hawkeyes. Two weeks later, Kinnick was the site for the next game against disdained Iowa State which the Hawkeyes won going away with a pair of fourth quarter touchdowns. Freshman corner Jaivonn Bender was key, picking up an interception, but Clark was not happy with the win, saying Iowa State would have thrown for 400 yards if they had not dropped so many passes. Walker also sustained a broken wrist in the game that would keep him out until the conference championship. It was on to Boone Pickens stadium in week 4, where Oklahoma State handed the Hawkeyes a disappointing blowout loss. Allen had one of his worst games of the season, and was hemmed in on the ground. After this game, Coach Clark determined the wide receivers needed to be strengthened a tad, and pulled the redshirt off fresman wide receiver Doug Durbin. If you had told Coach Clark the team would claim the 2020/2021 BCS National Championship after this game, he would have shot you a really mean glance. Rutgers were up next and got wrecked 50-14 as the Hawkeyes began what would be an 11-game winning streak to end the year. Eddie Allen threw 6 touchdown passes, the team racked up 259 yards on the ground, and Halloway came away with a late interception, the first of his career, and also scored a touchdown on offense. The Floyd of Rosedale was on the line in the annual game against Minnesota and the Hawkeyes kept it for another year with a 28-10 victory. Eddie Allen scored on a 70-yard touchdown run, and found Halloway for another touchdown on offense. Next the #9 Hawkeyes faced off against #1 Ohio State in the Horseshoe. Allen was at his best in a narrow 30-28 win, turning in touchdown runs of 77 and 67 yards as the team racked up 330 yards rushing. The defense, led by McFadden (10 tackles, 2 TFL, sack, 2 forced fumbles) took advantage of OSU's lack of a good quarterback as Justin Hunter completed just 9 passes for 50 yards on the day. Brian McFadden improbably topped his prior game as #8 Iowa took down Wisconsin 31-20. McFadden (17 tackles, 3 TFL, sack, INT, and fumble recovery) was named NCAA defensive player of the week in what was probably the best single game performance of his career. Proving how good he was is that it's probably up for debate. After a lengthy absence, Iowa were back on the dynasty scene at the nearly 5-year mark of this dynasty (thanks young22 for pointing that out) with a new game preview and a determination to crush Northwestern. The Wildcats were not complicit. It took a career effort by Kenard Goodman (18 car, 119 yds, 2 TD) and another big day on the ground by Allen (11, 115, 2), as well as yet another big performance on defense by McFadden (6 tackles, 4 TFL, sack, INT, forced fumble) for the Hawkeyes to eek out a 41-36 win at home. In the difficult Big Ten, it was yet another tough game in a 20-14 victory against Illinois the following week as the team had to survive an injury scare to Allen to hold on. Finally it was a laugher against Purdue as Iowa won 45-19 as Allen threw for 284 and three touchdowns with an additional 97 yards and a touchdown on the ground. Halloway intercepted just his second pass of the season and returned it for a touchown to put the nail in the coffin late. The now #3 Hawkeyes could not let their guard down as they traveled to Lansing the next week to face #16 Michigan State. The turning point was a forced fumble by McFadden (10 tackles) which was picked up at full speed by corner Jaivonn Bender and returned for a touchdown. Allen had to step up and win the game with a precise drive late in the fourth quarter, 41-37. Strong safety Kory Walker, who some thought might return against MSU, instead missed his safe date against Nebraska, a game which the #3 Hawkeyes won easily, 45-20. Bo Pelini got pissed and Iowa got the win. Daniel Norton, senior halfback, began to pick up the pace late in the year with 21 carries for 112 yards and 2 touchdowns and would go on to bigger and better things later. Walker was listed as questionable, but insisted on playing as a date with #7 Ohio State in the Big Ten Championship was all that stood between the #2 Hawkeyes and a berth in the BCS Championship. In a game that was not quite as close as the 42-35 score would indicate, Iowa won for Coach J.D. Clark his first conference championship in four tries. Iowa hammered OSU in the first half, leading 35-10 at the break and hanging on for the win. Norton scored three of the eight touchdowns he would score between the last three games of the year, Allen toted the rock 14 times for 177 yards and 2 toucuhdowns, and McFadden had 7 tackles and a huge interception in the first half. Kory Walker salvaged some of a mostly lost year with 10 tackles. Calvin Sanders, Georgia quarterback, was named Heisman trophy winner after an incredible season, and #1 Iowa were paired with #2 Georgia in the BCS National Championship Game, a matchup of 1-loss teams. Unfortunately for the Nielsen ratings, Iowa played their best game of the season start to finish in destroying the Heisman winner and his squad, 41-20. Sanders was picked off four times, and when he wasn't intercepted he was knocked out of the game so his backup could be intercepted. Norton bruised, bashed, and pounded away at the Bulldogs' defense for over 100 yards and three touchdowns, and McFadden had another insane game including a sack and an interception. Halloway came away with three of the five interceptions, and returned the last for a game sealing touchdown late in the fourth quarter. Coach Clark and Hawkeyes held aloft the the Coaches' Trophy and sat atop the college football heap at the conclusion of the 2020 season.

Coach J.D. Clark made the leap from good to great by winning his first
                            championship in the 2020/2021 season.

To do that, he first had to win the Big Ten Championship after failing to
win a conference title in his three previous whacks at the mole. As
usual, most of the games were close, with teams like Northwestern,
Michigan State, Illinois, and Wisconsin - all unranked - giving the
Hawkeyes all they could handle. There were additional games against
Texas and Iowa State that could have gone either way, as well.

Coach Clark showed a little more patience with the process, and
carefully picked spots to show disapproval with the team. He was
aided by a near complete lack of injuries on the year, with one major
exception, a 12-week injury to star strong safety Kory Walker. In the
end, Coach Clark has signed a five-year extension - tacked on to the
five added last year - which further cements Clark's commitment
                            to the Hawkeyes.

The deal increases Clark's annual salary slightly with a large 5th year
salary, but locks in the projected 8 wins a year for the next five years,
which barring unforeseen struggles should facilitate Clark remaining at
the school for years to come.

Is it solely formation subs and injuries as to why your second runningback almost had so many carries.. really been trying to figure out how to get a true two back tandem going in this game for sometime now.

as djp mentioned and as you've already seen yeah, it's like the positions are held by ghost players (ones who left) and you can't use them in the current season. However, I never used 50 spots... This season I maybe used 6-8. So it seems like on top of that fact it can just glitch, or the spots are held for a very long time, many years. Because at one point I had two, total, that I could use. So a couple years ago I started clearing them out and STILL couldn't use it even the following year. Finally it worked in full this year.

I had almost no injuries this year. Big reason we won a title, I think. (that will be rectified in a major way next season).

As for the true tandem back thing, I said as part of Coach Clark's goals for the offense that we would not run a tired runner all season. It stands to reason that for two RB to get a lot of carries you have to run the ball a lot, and even if we were running it a few times in a row, I wasn't going to run a guy that was any more tired than light green. Another factor was, I truly didn't believe either of the backs were that much better than the other. Except Norton is clearly better at picking up short yardage and tough goal line yards. So I kept them in their roles as it pertained to that.
