Really impressive performance in the opener at Texas. You look at the raw yardage totals and it seems like the Longhorns played Iowa relatively even, but the Hawkeyes made every big play whereas Texas didn't.

Quite a shame about Harkless - it's good to have the depth behind Mack with Malone, but I'm in full agreement with Joe in that I always found Hark to be a fun and slightly chaotic change-of-pace option under center. He's a contributor even if he doesn't throw the ball all that well, and there could be a few moments later this season where you may not convert that first down or pick up the yardage you need because it was a Hark situation.

I was surprised, I mean I guess not stunned, CPU teams tend to screw themselves over from time to time, but with all their ill-timed 4th down attempts and that backwards pass they just had a combo of bad decisions and bad luck that made the game look way easier than it was.

Yeah, the Citizenship / includes some rolls where a random number is tested against the citizenship ranking of a random player on the team, but it also has some where they are tested against a random number lower than 60, which is just a few guys, so the guys with the lowest ratings to roll against tend to have suspensions multiple times, and anybody can then roll a season long suspension or kicked off the team. The guys with the really low ratings seem to have a hard time staying on the field too long.

What an absolute mess of a game. I mean it is peak Iowa-ISU football right there; I felt like I was reading a recap of a game I've seen 5 times before, but that was still awful.

With as bad as Iowa played there, it feels like they shouldn't have retained the #1 spot, but we'll see if this is just a bad blip and things get better going forward.

That had me laughing out loud. Yeah it was really ugly, just one of those games. I probably in the article should have assumed the Hawkeyes would be out of the #1 spot, but knew better and let it slip in.

This upcoming game against Tennesse, I'll just say that I would put us as underdogs. The amount of injuries and suspensions is actually nasty and significantly hurts our chances of coming out on top. So I'm not sure if it will get any better.

              Quarterly Recruiting Board Update

We're continuing a recent trend of hyperfocus on certain positions in order to make sure we get one, and then we end up getting too many, it's bad. But there's a lot of talent lined up, and absolutely no guarantee we'll get the one we want.

We're going hard on DE, WR, TE. The wide receivers appear to be shaping up nicely, there are at least a couple that we put on our board who nobody is after. Naturally we're slow playing those so other teams can jump in later and give us a hassle. But, we're spreading our resources in an attempt to land some talent that wasn't necessarily interested in us to start with, and making good headway in that regard.

Especially in Iowa Hawkeye football lol.

Iowa football scored 15.4 ppg this past season. They were notoriously terrible on offense but great defensively

                      The 4th Wall

Abe Wettenbone is my weirdest scouting experience yet

From my perspective, a foundational aspect of having fun with recruiting is scouting. And the biggest key has been to not put points into the scouting column of HC skills. That means four scouting sessions to find out all the player's ratings and ultimately his OVR rating. If you're going hard after players, there are only so many you can scout. It's often not necessary to do the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th session if you've "seen enough" or know you're gonna go after the player no matter what, so often that get slow played. My curiosity often wins out.

So, Abe Wettenbone is a tight end out of Idaho Coach Clark has been going after. Traditionally, when scouting a player and the ratings ranked as significantly different are all green, I'm thinking whoa this is a potential gem. Check out this image here:

Was starting to view this guy as a potential gem and thinking of moving him even higher in importance compared to another more receiver oriented TE we're going after. TE is a crucial need for Iowa in the offseason.

But the key here is that the green categories where the rating was higher than (guessing) the system anticipated (it's not consistent on how this is done) are not super influential on the ratings for this position. The STR would be the most important one.

The final scouting session was done and without a single red popping up, the outcomes were all (apparently) toward the low end of the respective ranges without triggering the red background and he turns out to be a bust, with only green ratings changes ever uncovered. The SPD is ok, but the catch rating was at the bottom of the barrel for the expected range (again, guessing) at 59. Never seen F's, so those D categories are where you can get some real bad outcomes. Still want the guy as a blocker and everything, but I've never seen this before so I thought I would share. Just continuing to enjoy the ins and outs of this game and happy that after all these years I'm still a little green in terms of my understandings of the inner workings of the game because that makes it more fun.

                          2024 Week 5 Preview - #1 Iowa Hawkeyes at #19 Tennessee Volunteers

Week 5 - Iowa travel to Rocky Top Tennessee

Tennessee kicks off the first of four straight road games, which include Minnesota, Penn State, and Wisconsin. Coach Clark and the Hawkeyes will be looking to bounce back offensively from one of the worst games in recent history, but they will be without several top players on the offensive side of the ball. In additional to former starting wide receiver NeShawn Talley, who is suspended for the rest of the year, two additional skill players that would have started this week have been put on suspension. Starting running back Shakur Becton will be out three weeks with a suspension, returning for the Wisconsin game, and Dylan Dandy will this week's game with a suspension, returning the following week in the first Big Ten game at Minnesota. Starting right tackle Chad Anderson was lost in the second half of the Iowa State game and will miss the rest of the season with Rib and side injuries. True freshman Lucas Devlaminck will start in place of Anderson for the time being Backup wide receiver Jarvis Melbert, a redshirt freshman, will miss one week with a quad strain. The Hawkeyes have taken the redshirt designation off freshman wide receiver Jovan Gibson who will be one of three wide receivers available for this game. Tight End Hayden Polk will likely see the field from a traditional 4 wide receiver set at some point.

At the running back position, freshman Isaac Neilands, most known for his return skills, will be the only traditional running back available for use. Fullback Nathan Richardson will start at running back, providing good pass blocking and receiving skills out of the backfield, as well as good power for when the team can open a hole. Fullback Dwight Rhinehart and wide receiver Nick Vessel are alternatives as well. Clark thought about taking the redshirt off Freshman Zade Mitchell this week, but it appears that Clark will continue to redshirt Mitchell, who stands just 5'10", 177.

Tennessee have a well rounded quarterback in Sam Alston who can hurt the Hawkeyes with his arm or legs. The Vols don't typically run a fast-paced offense, so Coach Clark and company will have a good ability to match their personnel on a play-by-play basis. However, the depth on offer for the Vols at wide receiver presents real challenges with William Parker and Xavier Brown being standouts in terms of overall ability and speed, respectively, and their offensive line has been incredible. The Vols have been strong defensively this year so far, but were not projected to be one of the top defenses in the SEC in the preseason. Tune in to see how things shake out this weekend
