(1)Last year's series between these two teams was an exciting one. The Patriots won the first game at home after a huge 2nd half comeback. The Dolphin's won their game at home after making the redzone stop to keep the Patriots from winning the game and the 1 seed.
(2)The last time these two teams played in a week 1 game, Tom Brady threw for over 500 yards.
(3)The Patriots will wear their Navy Homes as the Dolphins elect to wear their White Aways. This is common procedure for teams like Miami that play in hot environments.
(4)Patriots Head Coach Chad Masters is looking for his first career win.
(5)Patriots had a perfect 4-0 preseason, while the Dolphins had a disappointing 0-4 preseason.

This is pretty awesome, I am really enjoying it so far. I am hoping you keep this going for a few seasons. I'm interested to see how the offseason turns out. I am a diehard lifelong Pats fan since I was a kid growing up in New England. When I play franchise mode, 99% of the time I use the Pats. I have a difficult time running a franchise with any other team. Or, if I do, I get tired of it quickly and go back to the Pats.

On a side note, I think your writing is great and encourage you to keep it up. I know you're only 16 but it is very cool that you have an interest and passion for something. I would keep it up and go to college and you could easily turn it into a journalism career.

Thanks for the kind words! It also used to be a struggle for me to play as a team other than the Pats as well lol.

Patriots Overcome Mistakes, Redzone Struggles to Stun Dolphins

The regular season of the NFL is here at last. Last year's series between the New England Patriots and Miami Dolphins was a good one, and it picked up right where it left off. There was no better way to start your NFL Sunday than to watch this AFC East match-up.

Things could not have started off worse for the Patriots. After receiving the opening kickoff, Stevan Ridley gets smashed in the backfield and fumbles. Rashad Jones would pick the ball up and walk it into the endzone for the touchdown. Patriots got the ball back and looked in form until they reached the redzone, where they stalled and had to settle for a field goal. The two teams would exchange punts, as both defenses came to play. The first quarter would end with Miami up, 7-3.

Early in the second quarter, the Patriots would punt the ball to the Speedy Mike Wallace. He would break a few tackles then use his speed to outrun everybody to the endzone for the 83 yard touchdown. The Patriots would respond by marching down the field slowly and scoring on a 16 yard Shane Vereen run. It wasn't the prettiest of drives, as the Patriots had to recover two of their own fumbles. The Patriots run defense had been stout to this point, but that changed when Lamar Miller only took two plays to run 80 yards and get the score, putting the Dolphins up by 11. The Patriots responded again with a quick drive that ended in a lob touchdown to Brandon LaFell for 24 yards. With under two minutes to go, the Dolphins would go three-and-out and have to punt. Julian Edelman would receive the punt and fumble it, allowing Miami to recover at the NE 36. The Dolphins capitalized, scoring on Ryan Tannehill's 4 yard pass to Lamar Miller. With 31 seconds left, the Patriots would get a few big passes to get into field goal range. Stephen Gostkowski would nail the 46 yarder to end the half. Miami leads 28-20.

After stopping the Dolphins, the Patriots would go to work and put together a good drive, but again, they would settle for a 25 yard field goal by Gostkowski, cutting the lead to 5. Later in the quarter, the Dolphins would take a long drive and punch it in with a Lamar Miller 3 yard run to extend the lead to 12. After three, Miami still leads, 35-23.

After another nice drive, the Patriots would find themselves in the redzone yet again. They had a 4th down and 7 to go. Coach Chad Masters elects for the gamble, but Brady's pass to LaFell is broken up. The Patriots defense would force a fast stop, giving the ball back to the offense. The Patriots offense would then be held to a three-and-out. With too many yards to get for the first, the Patriots had to punt. The Patriots defense would come up big again, stopping the Dolphins fairly quickly. The Patriots knew that they could not wait any longer. Brady would lead a very nice drive down the field and hand the ball off to Shane Vereen for the 3 yard touchdown, putting the deficit back at 5. The Patriots defense would again force the stop, giving the ball back to the offense with around 5 minutes to go. Brady and the offense is unable to do anything, and is forced to punt it back to the Dolphins with about 3 minutes left.

The defense has already done enough today to keep the offense in it, but they would have to make one last stop. It was 3rd down and 4. The 2 minute warning was approaching. The Patriots had just 2 timeouts left. Tannehill would look to throw, but with nobody open he opts to scramble. After about the first yard Dominique Easley makes the tackle, forcing 4th down. It was his only tackle, but it has my vote for play of the game, as there was nobody there to stop him. The offense gets the ball back and struggles. They converted a 4th and 5, and a 4th and 8. But the play of that drive was a 4th and 17 where Brady found Gronkowski for the first down. Gronkowski would be injured on the play, using the Pats last timeout. He would return later on the drive. As time is ticking, Brady would move the offense inside the 10, and on a 1st and goal, Brady would find Aaron Dobson for the go-ahead touchdown with 15 seconds left. The Patriots would convert the 2 point play to have a field goal lead. The Dolphins would not be successful on the Hail Mary play. Patriots win 38-35.

            Analysis
The offense really struggled this game. Brady did throw for 481 yards, but he was inefficient and made some poor throws. Shane Vereen had a decent game, but the Patriots really suffered from a lack of a consistent running game. The Patriots cannot make the mistakes they made and expect to win on a weekly basis. The defense was great, except for the drive Lamar miller took the ball 80 yards on 2 carries. Without the defense and those clutch 4th down conversions, the Patriots get blown in this game. My player of the game would have to be Rob Gronkowski. He played fantastic totaling 127 yards on 8 catches. Welcome back Gronk.

              Ups and Downs - 2014 Week 1

              Ups

Rob Gronkowski: In this first regular season game since his injury, he dominated yet again catching 8 passes for 127 yards. He also made a key catch on a 4th and 17 to keep the game alive.

Brandon LaFell: He added deep presence to this Patriots receiving core. He definitely got the better of a good corner in Brent Grimes. He had 6 catches for 113 yards and a touchdown.

Jamie Collins: He didn't get as many snaps as Mayo and Hightower, but he was a force in the Patriots' base defense, totaling 5 tackles against the run.

Dominique Easley: He hardly played, but he made a very athletic tackle to save the game for the Patriots.

              Downs

Stevan Ridley: His only carry was a fumble returned for a touchdown. He was benched immediately afterwards.

Rob Ninkovich: Only two tackles and wasn't able to get any pass rush going.

Chandler Jones: He had a decent pass rush, but he disappeared on running plays.

Patrick Chung: He wasn't able to contribute much to the run defense. Disappeared at times.

Patriots Cut WR Brian Tyms After Return from Injury

The New England Patriots have announced that they will cut WR Brian Tyms after his return from his ribs injury. With Tyms, the Pats had seven WRs on the roster, a number that is a bit too high. Tyms had a decent preseason and proved that he could be a serviceable WR in this league, but perhaps the Patriots felt that they had better options with Brandon LaFell and Aaron Dobson, who have already made big impacts.

This frees up a roster spot for the Patriots, and my guess is they use it for defensive depth.

Patriots Sign Veteran Safety Roman Harper

The New England Patriots have announced that they have used their free roster spot to sign 8 year vet safety Roman Harper. Harper was cut during the preseason by the Panthers. Before this year, Harper had spent all of his career with the New Orleans Saints, winning 1 Super Bowl. He has 655 career tackles and 7 career interceptions. He will wear his number 41. His contract is a 1 year, 1.4 million dollar deal with no guaranteed money.

I said perhaps the Patriots would sign some defensive depth, but Roman Harper is a guy that could start this week over the struggling Patrick Chung and Duron Harmon.

                      (1) Matt Cassel, the starting QB for the Vikings, is Tom Brady's former backup. He started 15 games for the Patriots in 2008 after Tom Brady tore his ACL. As a starter, he was 10-5, and he almost lead the Patriots to the playoffs.
                      (2) Both teams feature first year coaches between Chad Masters and Mike Zimmer. Both are looking for their 2nd career win.
                      (3) This match-up features the two highest scoring teams from Week 1.
                      (4) The last time these teams played in 2010, Brett Favre was Minnesota's starting QB in his final season.

Rob Gronkowski runs away from defenders in the first quarter

Rob Gronkowski Leads Pats to Comfortable Win in Minnesota

After the heart-throbbing win last week in Miami, the Patriots looked to win with more ease this week in Minnesota. It wasn't total domination, but it wasn't a nail-biter either. Due to Teddy Bridgewater's injury last week, we got the master versus apprentice game we wanted. Tom Brady versus Matt Cassel.

The Minnesota Vikings would get started hot after their overtime win last week. Cassel would lead them down the field and throw a beautiful pass to Kyle Rudolph down the seam for a 31 yard touchdown. Tom Brady and the Patriots would respond by easily marching down the field for their own touchdown. Ridley would punch it in for the 1 yard score. To end the first quarter, the Patriots defense would step up and make the stop. Game tied after 1, 7-7.

Brady and the offense would again, easily march down the field. Brady would cap it off with a 10 yard touchdown strike to Julian Edelman, giving the Patriots the touchdown lead. After another stop by the Patriots defense, the Pats would get it back and get a good ways down the field, but ultimately have to settle for a 38 yard field goal by Gostkowski. No team would be able to have any success in the final 3 minutes of the game. Patriots lead at halftime, 17-7.

The Patriots would recieve the ball to start the second half. They converted a few third downs to take a slow drive just into field goal range before being stopped. Coach Chad Masters takes a risk by allowing Gostkowski to kick a 51 yarder into the strong Minnesota wind. Gostkowski steps up to the challenge and nails the kick just over the crossbar. The other score of the quarter was a Blair Walsh 45 yard field goal. Patriots lead after 3, 20-10.

The Patriots would start the fourth by putting together a nice drive that would end in a Brady to LaFell connection for the 9 yard touchdown, giving the Pats a comfortable 17 point lead. The Vikings would answer and put together a very nice drive, but in the redzone on 3rd and inches, the Patriots defense would make the stop forcing the 25 yard field goal from Walsh. The Patriots were able to put some yards together to get to the Vikings 43. Coach Masters takes the chance on Gostkowski kicking the 60 yard field goal, but this time the kick would go with the strong wind. Gostkowski would again come through and nail the kick. With just under 4 minutes to go, the Vikings would put together a nice drive where it seemed as if they couldn't be stopped. It was capped off with an 18 yard pass to Greg Jennings for the touchdown, who had a great game. The Vikings would try the onside kick, but Julian Edelman was able to recover. The Patriots were able to run out the clock and seal the victory. Patriots win 30-20.

                        Analysis

Offensively, the Patriots looked much better today. That's a thanks to Rob Gronkowksi, who had a monster day with 9 catches for 147 yards. He again gets my vote for player of the game. The running game was also much improved with Stevan Ridley staying on the field and rushing for over 100 yards. The defense was much better against the run this week, but the secondary didn't play as well. There were a couple dropped picks and somebody always seemed to be open for the Vikings.

The Patriots will be at home next week versus the Raiders.

                          Ups and Downs - 2014 Week 2

                          Ups

Tom Brady: His efficiency really improved from last week. He didn't have very many bad throws this week and put up some good numbers.

Stevan Ridley: After his only carry was a fumble last week, he bounced back with 115 yards and a touchdown.

Rob Gronkowski: This guy is playing at a very high level right now. Nobody can seem to cover him and he is doing great after the catch. He had 9 catches for 147 yards this week.

Jerod Mayo: Was very strong against the run, making several key tackles.

Brandon Browner: He was really the only corner that was good this week. He dominated primarily covering Cordarrelle Patterson.

Devin McCourty: The secondary gave up a lot of completions, but they weren't deep down the field. McCourty kept Cassel from making any attempts deep down the field.

Stephen Gostkowski: He was 3/3 on the day with a 51 yarder into a strong wind, and a 60 yarder.

                          Downs

Joseph Fauria: He didn't get that many snaps, but when he did, he seemed to struggle to get open.

Darrelle Revis: He struggled to cover Greg Jennings as he broke off many big receptions against him.

Logan Ryan: He really struggled in coverage against Jarius Wright. With Arrington and Butler behind him, it's possible we could see a change at the nickel corner position.

The New England Patriots announced that they have extended their prized kicker, Stephen Gostkowski, for 6 more years. The deal is reportedly for 21 million with a 6 million dollar signing bonus. This will pay him an average of 3.5 million per year. This makes Gostkowski one of the highest payed kickers in the league. He will continue this season with his 2.47 million cap hit. Next season season his cap hit will be 2.17 million, and will rise from there. Gostkowski will be 36 in the final year of his contract.

Since being a controversial 4th round draft pick in 2006 for the Patriots, Gostkowski has been extremely consistent and invaluable to the team's success. He is having a great year so far this year, as he is 6/6 on field goals and has a long of 60 yards.

                                Game Notes
                                (1) This match-up features 2 of the 8 2-0 teams.
                                (2) Tom Brady is just 95 yards away from 50,000 career passing yards. He would become the 6th person to accomplish this feat.
                                (3) Tom Brady is currently tied with Drew Brees for 4th most passing touchdowns of all time at 363. With Drew Brees currently injured, just 1 touchdown pass would be enough for Tom to take sole possession of 4th place.
                                (4) We didn't mention it at the time, but Tom Brady did pass Warren Moon in week 1 to move into 6th place for most passing yards of all time.
                                (5) The New England Patriots are 11-2 in home openers since the 2001 season. Their only 2 losses were in 2001 against the Jets, and in 2012 against the Cardinals.
