We got Patriots regular season football two weeks ago, now we have Gillette Stadium regular season football. The Patriots have been excellent in home openers since 2001, posting an 11-2 record. This week versus a seemingly inferior Oakland Raiders team the Pats hoped to get another comfortable win. It could have been that way, but Tom Brady likes his game-winners too much.
The Raiders would open up on offense and not find much success, having to punt. The Patriots would get the ball and continue their offensive success from the previous week. They marched down the field easily and Tom Brady threw a touchdown to Danny Amendola, which puts Brady past Drew Brees on the all-time passing touchdown list into 4th place. Thanks to the tackling of Jerod Mayo, the Patriots defense was able to be very successful today in stopping the run. The Patriots would soon get the ball back but have to settle for a field goal. Patriots lead after 1, 10-0.
The Patriots had the ball to start the second, and again they would have to settle for a field goal, pushing their lead to 13. Rookie quarterback Derek Carr and the Raiders would then find some offensive success, and end up driving down for the touchdown. The Patriots offense again had to settle for a field goal attempt, as Coach Masters let Gostkowski kick a 60 yarder for the second straight week. Gostkowski had the wind advantage, but he left it short as it bounced off the crossbar for his first miss of the 2014 season. The Raiders would have great field position, but when they attempted a 51 yard field goal with Janikowski, he pulled it just a bit and it missed. The Patriots offense would have to settle for one more field goal in the half. Patriots lead at halftime, 16-7.
The 3rd quarter was quite uneventful as both defenses played well. The Patriots would accumulate enough success one drive to get into field goal range and kick a field goal to extend their lead. Patriots lead after 3, 19-7.
The Patriots would not start out the 4th quarter very well. Tom Brady would throw his first interception of the year to DJ Hayden, who would return the pick for a touchdown to tighten the lead. When the Patriots got the ball back, the first pass Brady would throw would be intercepted by Carlos Rogers. This gave the Raiders offense great field position, but they weren't able to capitalize on it. They settled for the Janikowski field goal and cut the lead to 2 points. Brady and the Pats returned to the field to try to put the game out of reach, but they were unable to do so. The Raiders would get the ball back, and Derek Carr would easily march the offense down the field. Darren McFadden would get the handoff for the touchdown to give the Raiders a 24-19 lead with just under 3 minutes to go.
This Patriots offense had not scored a touchdown since the 1st quarter, but they would have to score here if they wanted to win. The drive looked effortless, and it was hard to believe that this was the same offense that had been kicking field goal after field goal all game. A few nice runs by Vereen and some great passes from Brady over the middle set the Patriots up in the redzone. The Patriots would face a 3rd down and goal at the 1 yardline. Coach Masters called the Brady Leap play, and it worked to perfection. Tom Brady leaped over the goaline to give the Patriots the lead with around 35 seconds left. The 2-point-conversion was successful to Gronkowski, so the Patriots took the 3 point lead. Derek Carr and the offense had 35 seconds and 3 timeouts to get around 35-40 yards so Janikowski could try and send it to overtime, but the Patriots defense never allowed them to get a first down. They stopped the offense on 4 straight plays for the Patriots to win 27-24.
Analysis
The Patriots had a rough day on offense as they repeatedly had to settle for field goals. Rob Gronkowski was covered very well all game long, as he only totaled 3 catches. The run game was good, and it can be questioned why the Patriots didn't run more considering their success and the fact that both starting defensive tackles for the Raiders were out. The defense had a very strong game against both the pass and run, but the one thing this defense needs to start doing is forcing turnovers. They haven't done that all year and New England is -4 in turnover differential. My vote for player of the game goes to Jerod Mayo as he was a force against the run, and was a big reason for the Patriots' defensive success. The New England Patriots are 3-0, and will be on the road next week for Monday Night Football in Kansas City.
