    Year 7 21/22 - Preseason Week 4

Your One Stop Shop For Everything Pro Football!

    Craig Costello, Editor in Chief

In an effort to streamline our rather unwieldy season preview piece, we've tried to make things a little more bite sized for you, dear reader. If you have any specific questions for us, as always you can fire across an email and we'll happily fill you in with anything about your team you wish to know. We might not be publishing as much information, but I can assure you the hard workers at Pro Football Almanac Towers still collect more information that you could possible imagine!

    NFC North

Chicago Bears - Last Season 4-12

Best Offensive Player - WR Alshon Jeffrey
Best Defensive Player - DT Jye Mason
Best Player Under 25 - OLB Malcolm Pruitt
If the team does well, it'll probably be because of... Their O-line, which is one of the better units in the league. If they can keep Nate Patterson healthy they can put a solid season together.
If the team does badly, it'll probably be because of... Their defence shipping too many points. With a significant weakness at LB and safety, the team could be in trouble from teams who like to run the ball in particular.
Notable Resignings - DT Jye Mason
    Notable Additions - None
Notable Losses - RB Jonathan Stewart (retired - age)
Draft Pick - DT Deandre Hull

Detroit Lions - Last Season 6-10

Best Offensive Player - QB Jameis Winston
Best Defensive Player - DE Ezekiel Ansah
Best Player Under 25 - LT Ben Scruggs
If the team does well, it'll probably be because of... Their imposing core of linebackers. Between Levy, Whitehead and an aging Spikes, Detroit have an incredibly solid trio of players at the position. They have also been together as a unit for a long time, boosting their productivity and communication.
If the team does badly, it'll probably be because of... Their lack of offensive weapons. Whilst Winston is undoubtedly talented, he doesn't have much to work with at either WR or RB now Calvin Johnson has retired. Runner Deshun Flowers has shown promise, but isn't there yet.
Notable Resignings - LG Larry Warford, DT Ben Pruitt, RB Deshun Flowers
    Notable Additions - None
Notable Losses - WR Calvin Johnson (retired - age)
Draft Pick - WR Kevonne Joyner

Green Bay Packers - Last Season 9-7

Best Offensive Player - QB Aaron Rodgers
Best Defensive Player - LB stacey Winston
Best Player Under 25 - LB Ben McGhee
If the team does well, it'll probably be because of... Their defence. As an offence first team, the defensive unit for the Packers is routinely at the bottom of the league in most categories. If they can get some kind of production from their D, it'll go a long way.
If the team does badly, it'll probably be because of... There has been an inevitable decline from Aaron Rodgers. As one of the oldest QBs in the league, Rodgers won't be able to carry this team forever. Is this the season he starts to drop off?
Notable Resignings - QB Aaron Rodgers (franchise tag), MLB Stacey Winston
    Notable Additions - None
    Notable Losses - None
Draft Pick - TE Jabari Hicks

Minnesota Vikings - Last Season 9-7

Best Offensive Player - QB Teddy Bridgewater
Best Defensive Player - FS Harrison Smith
Best Player Under 25 - WR Jaren Jones
If the team does well, it'll probably be because of... Their secondary killing teams off. With Xavier Rhodes and Taven Blake, the Vikings have an elite duo at CB that are capable of keeping teams quiet.
If the team does badly, it'll probably be because of... Their RB situation. The team never really replaced Julius Shaw after he bolted for New England and Shenard Sellers doesn't look like the answer either. That will put a lot of pressure on Bridgewater and the passing game.
Notable Resignings - DT Linval Joseph (franchise tag), LT Alvin Bailey
Notable Additions - WR Malcolm Narcisse
    Notable Losses - None
Draft Pick - CB Will Parker

    NFC South

Mexico City Diablos - Last Season 6-10

Best Offensive Player - WR Julio Jones
Best Defensive Player - CB Desmond Trufant
Best Player Under 25 - QB Justin Mason
If the team does well, it'll probably be because of... They find an answer at QB. With former 14th overall pick Josh Mitchell on the roster, he is one answer. Veteran Nick Foles offers a more seasoned head but his best days are firmly behind him. Justin Mason could be another option moving into his 2nd year.
If the team does badly, it'll probably be because of... Whichever QB lines up under the centre, the offensive line does little to help them. This is a poor unit outside of Scott Turner at right tackle. With that in mind, the most elusive or durable QB may be the one to get the nod, not specifically the best.
Notable Resignings - OLB Cesar Stevenson, TE Luke Wilson, CB Chris Culliver
    Notable Additions - None
    Notable Losses - None
Draft Pick - LT Antwan Cooper

Carolina Panthers - Last Season 8-8

Best Offensive Player - WR Kelvin Benjamin
Best Defensive Player - MLB Luke Kuechly
Best Player Under 25 - DT Gerald Powe
If the team does well, it'll probably be because of... Cam Newton, Kelvin Benajmin and Parker Milton carry this team forward. With little at RB, this will need to be a passing offence if the Panthers are going to lead the NFC South once again.
If the team does badly, it'll probably be because of... Their secondary. Outside of Josh Norman, the side doesn't have much going on. Iran Riley is slated as their starter at free safety and he doesn't look like he'd make some teams' practice squads.
Notable Resignings - QB Cam Newton, CB Josh Norman, OLB Taylor Patrick (franchise tag)
    Notable Additions - None
Notable Losses - DE Charles Johnson (retired - age)
Draft Pick - WR Michael Gordon

New Orleans Saints - Last Season 10-6

Best Offensive Player - QB Riley Swanson
Best Defensive Player - DT Jamen Smith
Best Player Under 25 - QB Riley Swanson
If the team does well, it'll probably be because of... Riley Swanson continues his development towards being an elite passer. At such a young age, Swanson has the potential to be the latest to crack the top tier of QBs in the game. With comparisons to Aaron Rodgers, he has the possibility of making New Orleans a force for a long time to come
If the team does badly, it'll probably be because of... Injuries, most likely. This is one of the most complete teams in the NFL on both sides of the ball and an NFC Championship game of Dallas vs New Orleans is a real possibility.
Notable Resignings - DE Cam Jordan, RG Connor Graham, MLB Eldrin Garner
Notable Additions - RG Andrew Elmore
Notable Losses - LG Josh Sitton (retired - age)
Draft Pick - OLB Austin Blake

Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Last Season 10-6

Best Offensive Player - RT Eric Fisher
Best Defensive Player - DT Andrew Gutierrez
Best Player Under 25 - DE Ellis Jordan
If the team does well, it'll probably be because of... Their D-line continues to dominate teams. Anchored by Andrew Gutierrez, this is an elite unit that can wreck any teams game plan. Jabaal Sheard is a solid player at DE and Ellis Jordan should soon develop to perform at that level as well.
If the team does badly, it'll probably be because of... A lack of offensive depth. Whilst the team is strong across the O-line, the team doesn't have a lot to shout about at WR. If injuries hit, a weak unit is only going to get weaker for QB Will Patrick. There is also little behind Patrick after the team waived Morgan Lucas in the off-season.
Notable Resignings - DT Andrew Gutierrez, DE Jabaal Sheard, CB Alterraun Verner, RB Braxton Travis, QB Will Patrick
    Notable Additions - None
Notable Losses - RG Marshall Yanda (retired - age),
Draft Pick - RG LaKieth Bynes

Re: The N"If"L - A Look into the Future of an Alternate NFL

      NFC East

London Monarchs - Last Season 4-12

Best Offensive Player - QB Mike Start
Best Defensive Player - OLB Aldon Smith
Best Player Under 25 - C Casey Redmond
If the team does well, it'll probably be because of... Mike Stark and AJ Green improving their already impressive rapport to lead the Monarchs forward. They are the undoubted leaders of that offence with Casey Redmond anchoring the line.
If the team does badly, it'll probably be because of... Teams exposing the holes in the secondary. Shaman Parker and Jason Verrett are good players, but outside of those two there is little to shout about in London from the DBs. They need some help on the back end to if they're going to climb out of the NFC East basement.
Notable Resignings - FS Shaman Parker, RB Alfred Morris
      Notable Additions - None
      Notable Losses - None
Draft Pick - LT Thomas Taylor

New York Giants - Last Season 7-9

Best Offensive Player - WR Odell Beckham Jnr
Best Defensive Player - DT Kawaan Short
Best Player Under 25 - OLB Armand Russell
If the team does well, it'll probably be because of... Their defensive line. Short has been excellent addition after the G-men lured him over from Carolina, but coupled with Vinny Curry and Greg Hardy, the Giants have a formidable defensive front.
If the team does badly, it'll probably be because of... A further lack of development from Bryson Tracy. The young passer showed signs of hitting a wall last season and he didn't produce a level of production that many would have liked at this stage of his career. New York have signed free agent Ryan Tannerhill, but it remains to be seen if he is there to help Tracy develop, or to replace him.
Notable Resignings - DT Kawaan Short (franchise tag), CB Prinbce Amukamara
Notable Additions - QB Ryan Tannerhill
Notable Losses - DT Johnathan Hankins (salary)
Draft Pick - FS Kirk Norris

Philadelphia Eagles - Last Season 7-9

Best Offensive Player - TE Zach Ertz
Best Defensive Player - DE Fletcher Cox
Best Player Under 25 - LT Derrick Barkley
If the team does well, it'll probably be because of... A more stable QB situation. Philly began last season year with a major injury to starter Geno Smith, who missed all 16 games. BJ Blake filled in reasonably for the most part before faltering, leading to 4 starts for undrafted rookie Cory Knox at the back end of the season. Smith is back, and either he or Blake should be able to perform well for the Eagles.
If the team does badly, it'll probably be because of... - A weak group of corners. The #1 CB for the Eagles is currently slated as Patreon Scott, the teams'#12 pick in the draft. #2 on the depth chart is a 5th round rookie in Fernando Cole. Both players are going to need to hit the ground running for the Eagles to avoid being exposed against the pass.
Notable Resignings - DE Fletcher Cox (franchise tag), RG Daevon Lindley, C Travis Kelce, MLB Kiko Alonso
      Notable Additions - None
Notable Losses - WR Jeremy Maclin (age), QB Cory Knox (team)
Draft Pick - CB Patreon Scott

Dallas Cowboys - Last Season 14-2

Best Offensive Player - RG Zach Martin
Best Defensive Player - DE Demarcus Lawrence
Best Player Under 25 - QB Tyson McBridge
If the team does well, it'll probably be because of... Their offence continuing to excel. They have all the pieces in place, including a star QB and the best offensive line in the league despite the departure of Tyron Smith. They are most likely the favourite for the Super Bowl as we get going on the new season.
If the team does badly, it'll probably be because of... Their questionable secondary. Dallas beat all comers last season despite a secondary that lacked talent. The never really paid for their personnel, but with Mark Barron slated to start at Safety and Buster Skrine pegged as a starting corner, this is a unit that 'should' be the Achilles heel for the Cowboys.
Notable Resignings - QB Tyson McBride, TE Rashawn Martin (franchise tag)
      Notable Additions - None
Notable Losses - LT Tyron Smith (salary)
Draft Pick - WR Marquise Clay

      NFC West

      San Francisco 49ers - Last Season 3-13

Best Offensive Player - LT Kevin Wright
Best Defensive Player - DT Dontari Poe
Best Player Under 25 - LT Kevin Wright
If the team does well, it'll probably be because of... Their defence comes to play. With strength up the middle from All-Pro calibre players like Von Miller, Navarro Bowman and Dontari Poe, the 49ers can be confident of stopping the run and pressuring the QB.
If the team does badly, it'll probably be because of... Sam Doyle. 2nd year QBs generally display a decreased level of production, even if they had above average rookie campaigns. Look for Doyle to potentially struggle this season. That may mean an even bigger role in the offence for an already overworked Carlos Hyde.
Notable Resignings - DT Dontari Poe (franchise tag), FS Eric Reed
      Notable Additions - None
Notable Losses - TE Vernon Davis (retired - age), QB Colin Kaepernick (salary)
Draft Pick - DT Jerel Armstead

St Louis Rams - Last Season 8-8

Best Offensive Player - RB Daryl Mack
Best Defensive Player - DT Aaron Donald
Best Player Under 25 - RB Daryl Mack
If the team does well, it'll probably be because of... Aaron Donald and Robert Quinn dominating games. The Rams are always going to be a formidable team to play while they can call on the services of 2 superstars of that calibre.
If the team does badly, it'll probably be because of... Injuries to the O-line. Perhaps the weakest unit on the team is the offensive line that has some aging and injury prone players and a lack of depth. That issue could be further compounded considering the team has turned to an over the hill Joe Flacco as their answer at QB and he's going to be a sitting duck if this team can't protect the pocket.
Notable Resignings - RB Daryl Mack
Notable Additions - CB Stephon Gilmore, QB Joe Flacco
Notable Losses - SS TJ McDonald
Draft Pick - MLB Miles Young

Seattle Seahawks - Last Season 9-7

Best Offensive Player - QB Andrew Luck
Best Defensive Player - FS Earl Thomas
Best Player Under 25 - RB Keithen Dotson
If the team does well, it'll probably be because of... Keither Dotson continues to develop. Whilst this is still undoubtedly Andrew Luck's team, Dotson can take advantage of teams having to come out in pass formations to combat the ability of Luck. If Dotson struggles, teams will continue to attack the pass and deal with the run as an after thought.
If the team does badly, it'll probably be because of... The lack of quality at corner. Richard Sherman is still an elite player at his position despite his age. Behind Sherman there is very little and Seattle will need to address that soon. Rotating a safety to help can only work for so long. With the retirement of key DEs Bennett and Avril, the pressure of a pass rush isn't what it could be either.
Notable Resignings - CB Richard Sherman
      Notable Additions - None
Notable Losses - DE Cliff Avril (retired -a ge), DE Michael Bennett (retired - age), MLB Paul Worrilow (salary)
Draft Pick - MLB Kahlin Greenwood

Arizona Cardinals - Last Season 9-7

Best Offensive Player - QB Russell Wilson
Best Defensive Player - CB Patrick Peterson
Best Player Under 25 - RB James Brooks
If the team does well, it'll probably be because of... Wilson and David Johnson. As good a QB and RB due as there is in the league, these 2 players hold the key to a successful season for the Cards.
If the team does badly, it'll probably be because of... A serious lack of talent at the line backer position. There might not be a weaker collection of guys across the league and that will be an issue for Arizona. Look for teams to run hard against the Red Birds then attack with the pass once a safety has to be committed to the box.
Notable Resignings - CB Patrick Peterson, WR Allan Hurns
      Notable Additions - None
Notable Losses - LG Mike Iupati (retired - age)
Draft Pick - DE Pershing Griffin

        AFC North

Pittsburgh Steelers - Last Season 5-11

Best Offensive Player - RB Le'Veon Bell
Best Defensive Player - DT Javonte Mincy
Best Player Under 25 - WR Rainey Lamb
If the team does well, it'll probably be because of... Jared Cole. With the retirement of Ben Roethlisberger, recent results and a derth of talent on defence, little is expected of the team this season. That puts Jared Cole in an excellent position to over achieve and really give the Steelers something to be optimistic about.
If the team does badly, it'll probably be because of... Their defence. As discussed, they have little on the defensive side of the ball to cause problems for their opponents. With the ability to double Javonte Mincy, teams really should be scared of anything that Pittsburgh have to offer right now, though Ryan Kerrigan is a nice addition despite his age. This unit may well prop up the league after 16 games.
Notable Resignings - DT Javonte Mincy (franchise tag) WR Sherod Quarles
Notable Additions - LT Kevin Russell, OLB Ryan Kerrigan
Notable Losses - QB Ben Roethlisberger (retired - age)
Draft Pick - CB Antonio Nunley

Baltimore Ravens - Last Season 8-8

Best Offensive Player - TE Rommell Taylor
Best Defensive Player - MLB CJ Mosely
Best Player Under 25 - QB Zach Martin
If the team does well, it'll probably be because of... Zach Martin stepping up to the plate. Kept in the wings for perhaps a year too long behind Joe Flacco, Martin finally gets the keys to the offence after serving his time on the sidelines. If he embraces that opportunity, his talent will take the team a long way. Adding Rommell Taylor will be a massive help for the young passer.
If the team does badly, it'll probably be because of... Injuries to CJ Mosely. Whilst Mosely is the standout on defence, there isn't a lot around him at the Linebacker position. If he is forced to miss time for any reason, it is hard to see who will pick up the slack.
Notable Resignings - DT Brandon Williams (franchise tag)
Notable Additions - TE Rommell Taylor, WR Jeremy Maclin
Notable Losses - QB Joe Flacco (age)
Draft Pick - OLB Brady Harrison

Cincinnati Bengals - Last Season 10-6

Best Offensive Player - TE Tyler Eifert
Best Defensive Player - DE Mike Daniels
Best Player Under 25 - RT Hunter Ward
If the team does well, it'll probably be because of... A good run game. Jeremy Hill has led from the front with a string of impressive campaigns in recent years. The Bengals O does well when they can start by running the ball, giving Andy Dalton more options as team start to open up. Look for Hill to once again shoulder a heavy workload.
If the team does badly, it'll probably be because of... A poor run game. If Hill can't get things going or the team falls behind and the focus shifts to the passing game, Cincinnati don't have the receivers to cause problems. Since AJ Green left town, the Bengals have struggled to come close to replacing him but they'll be hopeful latest 1st rounder Damien Howard is the answer there.
Notable Resignings - DT Geno Atkins, QB Andy Dalton, SS George Iloka
        Notable Additions - None
Notable Losses - OLB Ryan Kerrigan (salary)
Draft Pick - WR Damien Howard

Cleveland Browns - Last Season 11-5

Best Offensive Player -QB Nate Gray
Best Defensive Player - FS Tashaun Gipson
Best Player Under 25 - CB Rashad James
If the team does well, it'll probably be because of... Their Linebackers match the rest of the defence. In a unit with only 1 real weakness, if the Browns can get their LB core to match the ability of the defence as a whole, they will be very tough to score on this season.
If the team does badly, it'll probably be because of... A weak running game. With a RB depth chart highlighted by Jaquizz Rogers and Alfred Blue, the Browns are going to need to pass early and often in most games. With Nate Gray in tow, that is fine, but they're unlikely to be able to pull off a ball control, grind you down offence if required.
Notable Resignings - QB Nate Gray (franchise tag), CB Joe Haden
Notable Additions - WR Emmanuel Sanders, DE Corey Luiget
Notable Losses - LT Joe Thomas (retired - age)
Draft Pick - WR Gordon Marsh

        AFC South

Houston Texans - Last Season 4-12

Best Offensive Player - WR Deandre Hopkins
Best Defensive Player - DE JJ Watt
Best Player Under 25 - DT RJ Ingham
If the team does well, it'll probably be because of... Their offensive line. With a solid core of young players and the resigning of Bradley Patrick and Artie Pierce, the Texans should be able to provide a formidable run game and give plenty of protection to Arryn Carroll. Selecting Evan Mason with the #2 pick in the draft should only make them stronger in the future to.
If the team does badly, it'll probably be because of... Their lack of CB talent. With Demetrius McCray as the starting CB ahead of 2nd year players Clifford Gordon and DeSean Mason, the Texans have very little to shout about against the pass. JJ Watt and the defensive line are going to have to create a lot of pressure to cover up that weakness or some guys are going to get exposed.
Notable Resignings - LG Bradley Patrick, RT Artie Pierce
        Notable Additions - None
Notable Losses - TE Rommell Taylor (salary), CB Orlando Scandrick (retired - age)
Draft Pick - LT Evan Moon

Jacksonville Jaguars - Last Season 8-8

Best Offensive Player - RG Brandon Linder
Best Defensive Player - OLB Telvin Smith
Best Player Under 25 - C Gordon James
If the team does well, it'll probably be because of... An offensive line that can dominate. RG Brandon Linder is one of the best in the business, but the team still have significant quality in players like Cole Scott and Luke Joeckel. That will help the Jags stay dynamic with both the run and pass.
If the team does badly, it'll probably be because of... A lack of WR talent. Having the time to pass is one thing, but there isn't a whole lot to pass to in Jacksonville. With Tevin Morgan and rookie Darqueeze Taylor looking to be the starters, that isn't going to cut it with Julius Thomas retiring.
Notable Resignings - LG Cole Scott (franchise tag), MLB Rolando McClain, RT Michael Harvin
Notable Additions - TE Rashawn Wilson
Notable Losses - TE Julius Thomas (retired - age), SS Robert Blanton (salary),
Draft Pick - WR Darqueeze Taylor

Tennessee Titans - Last Season 9-7

Best Offensive Player - WR Mike Evans
Best Defensive Player - DE Jurrell Casey
Best Player Under 25 - DE Keevin Ball
If the team does well, it'll probably be because of... Their offence continuing to blow teams out of the water. With Mariota, Antonio Brown, Mike Evans, Jarvis Landry and co. still destroying teams, the Titans will continue to roll as long as they can keep that offence productive.
If the team does badly, it'll probably be because of... A D that can't keep points off the board. The majority of the unit for Tennessee is solid, but LB is certainly a weak point. Barkavius Mingo in particular is a player that teams may target with both run and pass. He looked poor last season and might not be much better this year.
Notable Resignings - SS Rashaard Lewis
        Notable Additions - None
Notable Losses - TE Jimmy Graham (retired - age)
Draft Pick - OLB Sharif Martin

Indianapolis Colts - Last Season 12-4

Best Offensive Player - QB Rob Pickett
Best Defensive Player - CB Vontae Davis
Best Player Under 25 - QB Rob Pickett
If the team does well, it'll probably be because of... Rob Pickett. There is an argument to be made that Pickett is not only the best QB in the NFL today, but the best player overall. The Colts should be a consistent force for years to come and if he stays healthy, he could legitimately threaten some of the NFL's all-time passing records. Adding LT Tyron Smith should help make Pickett even better behind an already solid O-line..
If the team does badly, it'll probably be because of... A lack of depth on the defensive line. The Colts can sit back and enjoy a strong set of starters on the D-line of their 3-4 unit. But beyond those starters there isn't much on show. If someone like DT Dominique Caldwell goes down, things could get a little dicey.
Notable Resignings - CB Vontae Davis, RG Chance Warmack (franchise tag), DT Dominique Caldwell, TE Dwayne Allen, CB Demarcus Morris
Notable Additions - LT Tyron Smith
        Notable Losses - None
Draft Picks - OLB Connor Owens

New England Patriots - Last Season 7-8-1

Best Offensive Player - RT Dulan Nunley
Best Defensive Player - DE Chandler Jones
Best Player Under 25 - OLB Gordon McBride
If the team does well, it'll probably be because of... Jimmy Garoppolo staying productive but cutting down on his interceptions. Garoppolo led the league last season with 4,859 passing yards. That was a significant increase for him, and his 29 TDs were useful. However 19 interceptions against his name is just too much and they hurt the team more than the yards helped. It's ok for the Patriots to trust Garoppolo and employ a pass first offence, but he needs to be passing to the right team.
If the team does badly, it'll probably be because of... An injury to Dulan Nunley. As the standout on the offensive line, the team is thin at tackle. If he goes down, then there isn't a lot to replace him.
Notable Resignings - MLB John Bostick (franchise tag), RB Lamar Miller, QB Jimmy Garoppolo
          Notable Additions - None
Notable Losses - MLB Jerod Mayo (retired - age), WR Julian Edleman (retired -age)
Draft Pick - DT Denzel Huval

New York Jets - Last Season 7-8-1

Best Offensive Player - QB Jack Riley
Best Defensive Player - DE Muhammad Wilkerson
Best Player Under 25 - CB Malik Robertson
If the team does well, it'll probably be because of... Jack Riley making his receivers look good. Riley doesn't have a lot around him, either at TE or at WR. We've seen in the past that when healthy, Riley can be a game changing QB and given the opportunity he will get the best out of his limited receivers.
If the team does badly, it'll probably be because of... Jack Riley getting injured. In what has become a real concern for the Jets, Jack Riley is now has quite the track record of missing games through injury. Trying to mitigate that issue with the free agent signing of Colin Kaepernick, the Jets hope they can survive should Riley once again go down.
Notable Resignings - DT Damon Harrison (franchise tag), RB Desmond Tolliver
Notable Additions - QB Colin Kaepernick
Notable Losses - WR Eric Decker (retired - age)
Draft Pick - CB DJ Narcisse

Miami Dolphins - Last Season 8-8

Best Offensive Player - C Mike Pouncey
Best Defensive Player - DT Ndamukong Suh
Best Player Under 25 - WR Mack Duncan
If the team does well, it'll probably be because of... The D-Line. Unquestionably the strongest D-line in the league, the unit has been together a few seasons now and continues to excel. Suh, Floyd and Cameron are All-Pro players that only get better when you add in James McCray and other into the rest of this defence.
If the team does badly, it'll probably be because of...Claude McDonald continuing to regress. Since entering the league, McDonald has shown flashes of being a solid QB for the Dolphins. His flashes have become more and more sporadic though and last season he was dangerously close to being benched. If Miami can't get the best out of him, and consistently, they'll struggle.
Notable Resignings - DT Ndamukong Suh, C Mike Pouncey
Notable Additions - MLB Paul Worrilow, MLB Logan Phillips
Notable Losses - DE Mario Williams (retired - age), OLB Jacquian Williams (team)
Draft Pick - LT Cole Taylor

Buffalo Bills - Last Season 13-3

Best Offensive Player - LT Cordy Glenn
Best Defensive Player - DT Marcell Darius
Best Player Under 25 - OLB Jordan Gregory
If the team does well, it'll probably be because of... Good play from bad DEs. You can't question the ability of Marcell Darius, but the players either side of him haven't been impressing for a number of years now. The Bills have struggled to find a legit DE since Mario Williams left town.
If the team does badly, it'll probably be because of... Trying to replace Sammy Watkins. As a player with a growing injury list, Watkins is back and healthy. That is great news for the Bills but if the star WR goes down, there isn't a suitable player to step up into his place. Herschel Robinson is a legit talent but he doesn't have much to work with outside of Watkins, especially with the retirement of LeSean McCoy.
Notable Resignings - CB Jimmy Smith
Notable Additions - RB CJ Anderson
Notable Losses - RB LeSean McCoy (retired - age), CB Stephon Gilmore (age)
Draft Pick - OLB Jordan Gregory

Denver Broncos - Last Season 5-11

Best Offensive Player - RT Joshua McNeil
Best Defensive Player - CB Chris Harris Jnr
Best Player Under 25 - RT Joshua McNeil
If the team does well, it'll probably be because of... Cory Knox. As a big money acquisition for the Broncos, the team took a lot of teams by surprise simply due to the size of the contract they gave the undrafted 2nd year player. With 4 starts to his name and a 2-2 record after his rookie season, Denver's season probably rest on if this gamble works or not.
If the team does badly, it'll probably be because of... Any kind of injury. This roster is paper thin and probably one of the worst in the league. The Broncos can't afford a single player to be sitting games out. It really is that bad.
Notable Resignings - CB Chris Harris Jnr, CB Aqib Talib, TE Crockett Gilmore
Notable Additions - QB Cory Knox, RT Joshua McNeil, DT Johnathan Hankins
Notable Losses - WR Demaryus Thomas (retired - age), WR Emmanuel Sanders (salary)
Draft Pick - WR Lamarcus Barksdale

Kansas City Chiefs - Last Season 6-9-1

Best Offensive Player - TE Travis Kelce
Best Defensive Player - OLB Justin Houston
Best Player Under 25 - OLB Nick Sims
If the team does well, it'll probably be because of... A tough pass defence. With studs at OLB in the Chiefs 3-4 system, Kansas can also enjoy the duo of Sean Smith and Sam Shields at CB to lock down the outside as the pressure comes.
If the team does badly, it'll probably be because of... A questionable QB situation. With both guys having a shot, neither BJ Walter nor Drew Carter has excelled when given the opportunity. The Chiefs need to get some production from one of them though and the man they go with remains up in the air.
Notable Resignings - CB Sean Smith, C Harris Fletcher, QB Drew Carter
          Notable Additions - None
Notable Losses - CB Jason McCourty (retired - age)
Draft Pick - SS Andrew Landrum

San Diego Chargers - Last Season 6-9-1

Best Offensive Player - WR Keenan Allen
Best Defensive Player - SS Robert Blanton
Best Player Under 25 - CB Tyrone Briggs
If the team does well, it'll probably be because of... A top secondary. With Tyrone Briggs leading the way as one of the top young corners in the game, the Chargers can match up with any team in the league when trying to stop the pass. Expect them to force teams into being one dimensional on offence and dominate games if they can force their opponents in passing situations. Adding in SS Robert Blanton as a free agent was also a real coup.
If the team does badly, it'll probably be because of... A rookie QB. With Philip Rivers retiring at the end of last season, the Chargers turned to the draft for a replacement after coming up short in their efforts to lure Cory Knox to California. Selecting Logan Wood with the 10th pick of the draft, the Chargers double dipped and selected Florida's State Jared Todd early in round 2. It will be interesting to see which player secures the start in week 1.
          Notable Resignings - None
Notable Additions - SS Robert Blanton
Notable Losses - QB Philip Rivers (retired - age), DE Corey Luiget (salary), LT Eric White
Draft Pick - QB Logan Woods

Oakland Raiders - Last Season 12-4

Best Offensive Player - QB Max Shaw
Best Defensive Player - DE Khalil Mack
Best Player Under 25 - DE Michael Ryan
If the team does well, it'll probably be because of...Their offensive firepower. Fresh off a massive extension, Max Shaw is primed to keep the Raiders in contention for a long time. With Amari Cooper and Josh Gordon causing havoc on the outside with speed and size, the Raiders should put up very competitive offensive numbers this season.
If the team does badly, it'll probably be because of... A lack of talent around Khalil Mack. An unquestionable talent, Mack is the jewel in the crown of a competent defence for Oakland. What the Raiders do still lack is significant quality across the D-line to compliment the star DE. With that in mind, all teams are likely to double Mack as a minimum as they take their chances playing the rest of a weak D-line 1-on-1.
Notable Resignings - QB Max Shaw, FS Eric Weddle
          Notable Additions - None
          Notable Losses - None
Draft Pick - MLB Parker Minor

Covering your teams better than anyone else

With New CBA In Place, QBs Are Doing Just Fine

When the latest CBA was signed and ratified, a number of people were unsure how the new rules would impact the NFL landscape. With teams now required to provide at least 50% of the total value of a contract as guaranteed money, it was tough to know which end of the pay scale it would hit hardest. After the last few weeks, we may have an answer.

3 years ago, Andrew Luck broke contract records with his 6 year $140m deal to stay in Seattle. That deal carried $67m in guaranteed money and eclipsed the previous mark set by Calvin Johnson with his 8 year deal that recently expired with the Lions as he retired. This week, both of those numbers were eclipsed. Twice.

As is frequently the case when multiple deals for high profile players in the same position need to be sorted, there is a domino effect once the first deal is completed. In this case it was Max Shaw, who has completely turned around the Oakland franchise and looks set to challenge every passing record the franchise has. The Raiders want him to do it as well, giving him a 6 year extension worth $140m. The guaranteed money of $70m narrowly passed Luck's previous record, giving a firm answer as to if teams would pony up higher and higher levels of bonus money for top players.

Once the benchmark had been set for Shaw, it gave Tyson McBride's camp something to base their negotiations off. With a Superbowl still sitting pretty at Dallas HQ and not yet old enough to be gathering dust, the young passer had a lot to work with. Once a contract was in place, the news broke that his was also a 6 year deal but understandably a little richer than Shaw's. $150m with $75m in guarantees.

It is tough to see who could eclipse that deal. No young passer has been more consistently successful than McBride. Others could match his ability, Riley Swanson and Zach Nelson are 2 such candidates, but McBride coupled his ability with a stellar team that has been to 2 Superbowls in his tenure, winning 1, and is yet to miss the playoffs. Nelson and Swanson could both struggle to match that, or even come close.

The domino effect continued further into the off season as relatively unknown quantity Cory Knox inked an eye-opening deal in Denver to be their answer at the quarterback position. His 5 year $80m deal shows that for the guy they perceive to be the right man, NFL teams will still pull the trigger without hesitation.

It seems like a strange return to normality with the absence of "Cole-Mania". Now a starter in Pittsburgh, we turn our attention once again to the upcoming class of college athletes set to try and make an impact at the next level. Some teams will be pleased at what they see from this class, but if your side needs O-line help, look away now.

QB isn't normally a position of strength for the Crimson Tide, but Chase Parker could buck that trend. I'm not as high on him myself, but his numbers may mean someone falls in love with him early.
                                • Given a pick myself, I'd take Brian Burch or Andrew Motes. Wisconsin's Burch could excel in a West Coast system with his short to medium accuracy, with Motes possessing the throw power to wow scouts whenever he hits the field.
                                • With a real rarity on our hands, the NFL will most likely see a pair of twins drafted into the league this year. With Brian Burch mentioned above, don't sleep on his brother Andy. The vertical passer from Oregon has been a college standout for 3 years and should be a late 1st/early 2nd round pick. Even if teams get this pair mixed up on draft day, they're still going to get a pretty good player!

                                RB
                                • What more can you say about Lamarcus Schofield? A two time Heisman winner, the Penn State RB can do it all. He can beat you one on one, or he can run right over you. He catches, he blocks, I'm pretty sure he can probably throw it to. He is a plug and play 1st rounder regardless of scheme and should go early.
                                • Cejay Patrick from LSU could be the top runner in most draft classes, but he most likely won't be here. Still, a team will enjoy his services and could get a good deal if their rivals clamour for Schofield. A 1st round sleeper, if there is such a thing.
                                • There might not be a quicker man in the draft than Jawaun Finley. With breakaway speed, quick hips and a lightning 1st step, the Vols man could find himself a home on someone's Special Teams unit whilst he learns the ropes of an NFL offence. At that point, he could flourish.

                                WR
                                • Everyone is looking for this year's Lamarcus Barksdale and at 6'4", 239lb, Darrion Austin looks the part. But his routes aren't quite as sharp, his hands aren't quite as good and I don't think he possesses the same ability to use his body to win the battle for the ball in the air. He's good though, mid 2nd rounder for me.
                                • I think the "Pocket Rocket" Kyle McCain from Michigan State gets the nod at the top of the class. Despite his size, he is fearless at the line and impressive in traffic. He reminds me of Julian Edelman, and we all saw how that pro career worked out.
                                • Russell Bryan is getting a lot of hype but I just don't see it. Sure, he beat up on some teams when Florida played out of conference, but if you look at his tape in the SEC, those guys kept him quiet. He could end up as a bit of a reach if he comes off the board early.

                                TE
                                • Somewhat of a down year for Tight Ends, look to Lucas Gilbert to break the 1st round if anyone is going to. At 6'6" he has the size that teams covet, and he can excel as a big body receiver.
                                • I don't have much to split Phil Taylor from LSU, Ross Coley from UCLA and Ethan Mason from Oklahoma, but I don't have any with a 1st round grade. Mason has the edge as a blocker if teams are looking for that. Taylor and Coley are certainly receiving TEs.
                                • Michael Fitzgerald is a disappointment at this stage. He had so much promise after his 1st 2 years at Indiana but his player has fallen off during his last 2 years and now injuries from his high school days are beginning to catch up with him. Lots of red flags.

                                T
                                • This could be the weakest tackle class in several years. I have just 1 guy with a 1st round grade, and he may end up as a better player on the right side than the left.
                                • That man is Jorvante Browning and his run blocking and toughness cannot be questioned. His pass blocking footwork lets him down which is why he may end up as a right tackle, but he has the raw power to make a splash in the NFL if the right team gets hold of him.
                                • Teams looking for help at the all important Left Tackle position may look at Marvin Scott from LSU. He might be the best pass blocker in this draft and could provide value in the 2nd round, but a team would be reaching if they took him earlier than that.

                                G
                                • Shamare Bennett is a rare talent at the Guard position. Some say his success in the college game came from the ability of Lamarcus Schofield at Penn State, but I think you let him play anywhere in the country and he'd excel. I've got him with a 1st round grade.
                                • Shamare Florence is another guy that impresses me. Much like Cejay Patrick at RB, Florence could top his position in a lot of other years were it not for Bennett. Still, he should be the 2nd Guard off the board once we're into the 2nd round.

                                C
                                • Javier Huerta from Tennessee is the standout at the Center position and it isn't really close. I only see 3 or 4 draftable players in a very thin bunch. The 6'1" Huerta can pass and run block well and has the ability to improve in the right set up.
                                • After Huerta, the pickings are slim. Gordon Mason from Western Kentucky is probably going to be next man taken, but don't expect to hear his name called until deep into the later rounds.
