The 4 Quick Takes From This Week's NFL

    Amanda Reditch

Just got back from my West Coast road trip. I did the East coast this time last year so I wanted to head out West and see some amazing people over there! San Fran, San Diego, Arizona, Seattle and Oakland. Some of those teams are really struggling right now though. It’s a bad time to follow a team in that part of the World.

1st Down – Game Over for the Jets

It appears to be a constant theme for my column at the moment to cover the Jets but after being part of a PFA round table on the team recently, I wanted to have another say. I wrote last year that the Jets would most likely need to extend Riley due to a lack of better options. I was probably right at the time but given the size of his new contract and level of play this season, how good would those alternative options the team turned down look right now? They’re crazy not to turn the team over the Kaepernick even if it’s just so Riley can regroup. Right now, the Jets seem happy to drive their QB into the ground.

2nd Down – Musical Chairs in Denver

Hokey-pokey time for the Broncos. You put Cory Knox in, then he goes down hurt so he’s out. Ryan Nassib in, then Knox is back so he’s in again and Nassib is out. Then Knox’s injured once more and it’s Nassib back in. Now it looks likely that Knox is back from his abdominal injury and he’ll be under centre this week against the Giants. In, out, in, out, make up your mind! Denver’s defence have actually shown up this season and are an above average unit, but they are struggling for consistency on offence. Lamarcus Barksdale looks like a potential Offensive Rookie of the Year candidate, but he’d probably like a settled QB situation as well.

3rd Down – Is The End In Sight With The USADA Drug Enquiry?

I’ve heard from a couple of sources that the USADA investigation isn’t far from a conclusion. After leaving no stone unturned, the landscape of the sport could be drastically changed very soon. I still have no timetable on when things might be concluded but some have suggested this is so big the League is waiting until the off-season to lower the hammer. If the findings are that damning, why are they waiting? I’m just going to go out there and say it as well. Aaron Rodgers? Is there just me thinking this here?

4th Down – Super by Name, Super By Nature

When the Saints announced their new super club concept back in November 2018, a lot of people were somewhat sceptical of the idea. 3/4s of the way through their first season, Riley Swanson is already the face of the now reborn franchise and he’s everywhere you look in New Orleans. After a strong off-season, the NBA Saints are on fire and look a strong bet to be a top seed in the West come the playoffs and the whole sporting complex is seeing record levels of turnover and income. It’s early days, but this looks like a total win for the team and wider franchise as whole.

I’ll be back in a few weeks with my final takes of the regular season. Until then I’ve got a shed load of digital footage to sort through so for all you West Coast fans, hit up my website in the coming days to see if you made the cut!

Your Path To The Hottest Draft Talent!

            Lloyd Bowerman, Senior Draft Writer

            Draft Preview - Defence

With a bit of a boom or bust class on the offensive side of the ball, we have a lot more on offer on defence this year. Look out for another absolutely stacked OLB group, right up there with the crop of players we got in 2018/19. The college game is really excelling at the position right now and the NFL is seeing the dividends at the next level.

            DEFENCE

            DT
            • There is a log jam at the top of this position that will only be split by the preferences of the teams picking. I have 3 players up there with very similar ranks.
            • Donte Bryan from Texas A&M might have the edge as he can probably be slotted into a 4-3 or 3-4. With the size and strength to play as a NT, he still has the moves to make waves in a 4-3.
            • Nate Albert and Kesnick Stallworth will both be big losses for USC next season but the time was right for both to move on. They are both talented guys and it'll be interesting to see who comes off the board first.

            DE
            • We all knew it couldn't last forever, but with Will Saunders declaring for this draft, that's 2 stud DTs and a potential top 5 DE that USC will have lost before next season.
            • Saunders could be top dog, but Andrew Mosely from Ohio State has been dominating the SEC for 3 years now and deserves a look. Like Sanders, he stands at 6'7" and both are imposing figures.
            • Antuan Keith has had a lot of press this season but I don't like what he brings to the table. We've all see the highlight reel hits when he gets to the ball carrier, but it happens too infrequently. His technique needs work if he is going to get into a position to supply those hits more frequently.

            OLB
            • My days is this a stacked OLB class. With plenty to be had at the position, don't be surprised to see teams dip into this group in order to fill needs at OLB and DE. I have 6 guys with a 1st round grade.
            • If you forced me to pick, I'd probably take Riley Patrick at the top of my list. At 6'2" and 229lb, he can move and tackle like no other in this class but some aren't far off. Nathan Johns from UCLA might be a close 2nd, but he's more of a 3-4 edge rusher compared to Patrick as a traditional 4-3 backer.
            • Look for Auburn's Eric Wilson to sneak up draft boards as another versatile 3-4 player, the same with Connor Charles from Florida State. Charles in particular has a devastating swim move that reminds me of DeMarcus Ware.

            MLB
            • It's a good job this outside linebacker class is loaded is there is an absence of talent in the middle of the position that highlights a worrying trend. I've only given out one 1st round grade at MLB in the last 4 seasons.
            • While some appear to be high on Everette Milliner, Dawson Woodson and Chris Ware, I have them further down my board. Ware in particular looks like a reach if teams are looking for 1st round talent.
            • A better bet might be Florida State prospect Tiras Russell if teams need an answer at MLB. Don't expect much out of him in coverage, but if you're looking for a kid who can run and tackle, then Russell has the fundamentals to work with.

            CB
            • This isn't a particularly deep class but there is some star potential on offer for a team with a high pick and the right need.
            • Margarito Hardy from Ohio State is leaping up draft boards, and for good reason. As possibly the best man corner in this class, he also has an intimidating press despite his 5'11" 186lb frame. From the tape I've seen, he can also play well in zone, making him a versatile prospect.
            • Zach Riley from Tennessee and Jamal Scott from Nebraska also offer teams plenty to think about. Better suited to zone than man, but could still excel in the right system and have shown enough to date to suggest they'll find success in the NFL.

            S
            • Jason Graves from Pitt is a rare talent. He moves like a free safety but can hit and tackle like a strong safety. He's spent the last 2 years making plays all over the field and he's the top pick in this class at safety.
            • There might not be a smarter defensive player this year than Michael Birch and I love watching his film. He isn't the fastest but he often doesn't need to be, putting himself in the right position to read plays and blow them up.
            • There might not be a traditional strong safety picked on day 1, ut Aleon Hansen from Texas might be close. The Longhorn had 3 solid years in college and should be well suited to the physical play at the next level. He could be one of the best zone coverage DBs in this draft as well, quite the combination to have.

My control pad nearly went out of the window when I lost this one. So integral to a lot of the current story lines, I wanted to win ridiculously badly. And the Steelers just marched on me right when it mattered in the 4th.

                Cory Knox is not happy!!

The 4 Quick Takes From This Week's NFL

                      Amanda Reditch

It's been a while since someone had a run at the NFL record books but now we have not 1 but 2 players in Dallas who are trying to go down in history. The Jets have also drawn a line under a period of their past to, and a number of high profile players may be about to do the same.

1st Down - McBride Breaking Records in Dallas?

With 2 games to go, Tyson McBride has already passed the 5,000 yards passing mark on the season. Hosting Kansas next week before finishing off back in the NFC East against the Giants, there is a real chance that Tyson could make the single season passing yard record his own. Still held by Peyton Manning, his total of 5,477 yards for Denver looks set to be eclipsed providing the Cowboys don't stumble down the stretch. With the NFC East still competitive, there's plenty to play for and that'll help McBride as his team keep their foot on the gas.

2nd Down - Not One, But Two Dallas Record Breakers

It figures that with McBride lighting up the score board each week, those passes have to go to someone. Moving into the twilight of his career, seasoned veteran Dez Bryant has been a polarising figure throughout his time in the NFL. If you look at his numbers though, he appears a lock for the Hall of Fame once he retires. Adding a Superbowl win last year will help, and now he sits on the verge of being the first WR in NFL history to pass 2,000 yards receiving in a season. Calvin Johnson holds the record at the moment from 2012 when he put up 1,964 yards for the Lions, but with less than 100 yards to go to get to that mark, the opportunity for Bryant to break new ground in the league is very real.

3rd Down - What's Next For The Jets?

Since I last penned this column, the Jets have taken the plunge and axed Lane Kiffin from the organisation. With the losses continuing to pile up, the team are in the mix for the #1 pick and are searching for a new direction as well. With a number of key personnel decisions looming, this one has already been made and the rumour mill is in full effect as to who could take over at the Meadowlands. The main downfall for Kiffin was most likely the regression of Jack Riley who has hampered the team's chances of success this year with a string of poor performances. Will the team opt for another QB focused coach to help Riley turn the corner? Or shift the focus elsewhere? Maybe the team will be looking for

4th Down - USADA Finally Closing In?

Sources tell me that the USADA is nearly finished with their investigation into illegal PED use in the NFL. There should be some very nervous people in the league according to what I'm hearing, both on the field and in front offices. It's expected that players found guilty from the findings will be automatically banned for a year and that their teams will forfeit a high round pick for this upcoming draft. With nothing left to do but wait, there are a lot of people sweating across the country right now. Do you think anything will happen to your team? Fingers crossed, but I think this is going to be a PR nightmare for a while to come yet.

With the Packers all but locking up the NFC, I'll leave that final take to resonate with you all for a while. I'm not putting anything out there, it's just interesting is all. With 2 weeks to go there are still some great divisional races to finish up, so let me know in the comments section who you're going to be watching to end the regular season and why.

Now we're at the end of the year 7 regular season, thought I'd pop my head in with a post

Firstly, thank you to anyone following. We passed 30,000 views this season which is a number that continues to blow me away. Each day seems to attract around 40-60 views so thank you so much to anyone taking the time to check in, read, enjoy, whatever it is that you do. I appreciate every single one and it drives me to keep going.

I'm still more than happy to chat, provide stats, insight for anyone that is interested in a particular player/team/coach, to see how they're getting on now we're closing in on the 10 year mark. This seems to be a pretty low interaction project but that ok as I know people are still checking. Don't be afraid to chip in or throw a like out there if you're in the mood though.

On that front, I've set up a dedicated twitter account for this in case people want updated that way as to when new posts are up, or to chat on there about what is happening both with CK and the rest of the league. I'll probably drop some messages when I'm simming or playing as well, just in case people are interested. The link is https://twitter.com/CoryKnoxQB and the handle is @CoryKnoxQB

If anyone has anything new they'd like to see, more than willing to include it if you think it will add to realism/interest. I try to focus on the character as well as the league but if there is anything important that people feel is missing, do let me know.

I currently have no plans to move on from this Madden to anything new. What I'm doing fits the limited time I have in my home life to play and the writing fills up the other time I have. It's also keeping me going IRL with the dull days of summer with no real NFL! I'm about 5 or 6 weeks into Season 8 now, planning more content and slowing working through things. You'll all have to wait and see what is coming, and how the big story line from Season 7 will play out with the USADA.

Oh, and there is no play of the game for the Oakland game, my PS4 died with about 30 seconds to go in that one and when I reloaded the game from that point, no highlights were available. If anything, the play of the game would have been CK getting hit and fumbling the game away on the final drive, but you didn't need to see another turnover from him anyway lol

                            Thanks all

Dez Bryant, Tyson McBride Both Mark Place In NFL History Books

The game allows players to secure their place in history in a number of ways. Some are immortalised through a single play. David Tyree and his catch in Superbowl 42. Some are remembered for a game, such as Norm Van Brocklin and his 554 passing yards for the Rams back in 1951. Others might end up in Canton, remembered for all time. Two Cowboys took a big step towards Ohio this week, but are far from ready to hang up their cleats.

Since 2013, Peyton Manning’s mark of 5,477 passing yards in a season has stood, but Dallas QB Tyson McBride is the new owner of that record. Posting a line of 5,487 yards, 43 touchdowns and 11 interceptions, it has been a season to remember for the passer from North Texas. The output helped the Cowboys to an 11-5 record and 3rd seed in the NFC as team look to repeat as Super Bowl champions

I’m lost for words, honestly, said McBride when asked to reflect on the achievement. “It’s been a wild ride this season, trying to win back to back. Sometimes it’s pushed me to the brink, but I know with God on my side I can achieve anything. He gave me the ability I have, I owe him everything. We have a fantastic team here, Coach is next level, but now I just have to use my faith to put this team on my back and go for another championship.

With so many passing yards in Dallas this season, it is little surprise that Dez Bryant also joined his QB in the NFL record books. As the clear #1 at WR, the former Oklahoma State man reeled in 134 passes to be the 1st man in league history to eclipse the 2,000 yard mark. His catch total for the season puts him 4th all time, and that connection with his QB translated to a total of 2,195 yards receiving once all was said and done. That smashes the previous record held by Calvin Johnson who totalled 1,964 yards back in 2012.

It doesn’t really matter where I put the ball, Dez is not only going to find it but he’s going to fight for it to,” said McBride, paying tribute to his fellow record holder. “He’s the #1 dog in any fight. I know if I put that ball anywhere near him, no matter who is around, he’s going to be the guy that wants it more. He’s a special talent, no doubt. More people should take note of what he does and how he works to be the best that he can be. It's inspiring stuff.

The season got off to a great start as the defending champions overcame Max Shaw and the Raiders in a 35-33 classic. McBride got rolling with 357 yards and 3 scores that day, with 136 yards and 2 of the TDs going to Bryant. A 457 yard performance over the Saints in week 8 kept McBride’s season on track as the Cowboys continued to lead NFC East, though Bryant fell just short of triple digits receiving as he ended on 96. That was followed up by a 45-30 demolition of London in week 9, where 6 TDs and 369 yards from McBride were more than enough to get the job done. Bryant was unusually quiet in the rout but bounced back with a 155 yard effort against Philadelphia in week 12 as T-Mac flirted with the 500 yard mark once again before finishing on 486 along with another 5TDs.

It was a hot couple of weeks for the ‘Boys as they followed up the hammering of the Eagles with a thriller of a win over San Diego, coming out on top 47-44 behind more eye-popping numbers. 525 yards was the single season high for the QB with #88 hauling in 190 yards and all 3 of the team’s passing TDs. Whilst Bryant securing the single season record with 2 weeks to go against the Panthers in week 15, McBride needed the full schedule. Only just though, he threw 3 passes in week 17 vs the Monarchs before heading to the bench. That was enough to add 23 yards to his season total and secure a place in NFL history.
