Gurley Breaks Media Silence, Shocks NFL Landscape By Walking Away In His Prime

Still only 24 years of age, Todd Gurley today rocked the NFL by breaking his self imposed media silence to announce his intention to see out the remainder of his rookie contract then leave the sport with immediate effect.

After numerous fines, Gurley ending his relatively expensive silence, leaving few in doubt as to where his head was at. "I don't want to play football anymore, it's as simple as that. The injuries mount up. I have my health to think about. You can see cuts and bruises, you can't see the impact on your head, on your brain. I'm fed up of getting my bell rung for a contract that isn't even guarenteed. You see baseball, or basketball, they don't take the kind of damage we do. You don't pay the same toll with your body. I'm done with it, man"

As a star in his prime, Gurley walking away from the sport is sure to pose a number of questions for the NFL about the mental and physical health of its players and how they are compensated for what they do for a living. Some will argue that contract levels are already astronomical compared to those of the general public, but others will say that salaries are simply based on the amount of money these players help bring in. Ultimately, what price can be put on someone's long term health?

When asked what he would do once his contract was complete, Gurley seemed at peace with his decision and had a clear path in mind, "I've already got plans to go back and run track. May be the hurdles, may be the straight 100. I have always had a passion for the sport and I'm looking forward to returning. I've spoken to a few coaches who are excited to work with me. My sponsor, Nike, are also excited and support me in this move."

Gurley has represented the USA as a student athlete in 2011, before signing with the Georgia Bulldogs and pursuing a path in football. It remains to be seen how successful he will be as a sprinter, but for now he has left no doubt that he does not consider his future to be in football.

Tom Benson to create New Orleans "Super Club" unite New Orleans Sport under 1 name

At 91 years old, Tom Benson still has a final move in him to shape the landscape of sport in New Orleans. As owner of the two biggest franchises in the area, The Saints and Pelicans, Benson and his associates have put in a considerable amount of ground work with the NFL, NBA and other stakeholders to finalise a deal to merge the teams into a single entity known under the banner of the "New Orleans Saints".

"We have a rich history of sporting excellence in the area. Louisiana is proud of their teams, and we have passionate fans." Benson said. "Rather than divide, I want to strengthen, to create something that can rival any collective sporting franchise in the world. "

The idea of a "Super Club" may be new to these shores but is relatively common practice amongst the largest franchises in Europe. In Munich, Madrid and Barcelona to name but a few, sports teams play under one brand and enjoy the shared wealth, marketability and growth potential this can bring. With some of the biggest hitters in terms of soccer coupling these with basketball teams and other sports it has been a win-win for all concerned. "Of course, look to Europe. Look at Real Madrid, look at Bayern Munich, look at Paris Saint-Germain. These clubs are thriving from shared resource, a shared goal."

The other element to this innovative proposal is for a "sporting hub" to be built on the outskirts of the city to bring all sporting activity together in one place. The Super Dome will be 45 years old next season, a relic in sporting terms. "The Saints Hub, that is important, its key." said Rita LeBlanc, granddaughter of Tom Benson and Vice Chair of the current New Orleans Saints. "We want the sports to not only be joined up on the field and court, but off it as well. We have no desire to move any team out of the area, we learnt that lesson 15 years ago. The Saints belong in New Orleans and the city has been excellent in facilitating this opportunity to not only stay, but create a new home as well.".

The ambitious plans involve a large scale sporting complex to be constructed with a new indoor football stadium, an arena for the former Pelicans, a number of community use sports facilities, outdoor tennis and basketball courts, an academics centre, numerous shops, bars and leisure outlets as well as a 5,000 seater soccer stadium and space for additional construction should other sporting opportunities become available, such as baseball or lacrosse. "Above all else, this is about not only uniting sport for fans, but it is about uniting the community and the people of New Orleans. I've experienced a lot of division in my life in recent years. It is time to draw a line and bring people together."

The 4 Quick Takes From This Week's NFL

        Amanda Reditch

4th and short, or a key 3rd and goal, football often comes down to those important, game changing downs that can shape a season, even a career. We've got 4 pretty sizable downs coming up today, and all 4 could have serious implications on teams and even the league itself!

1st Down - Don't let the door hit you on the way out, Dan!

My sources suggest that the only thing left in the reclamation of the Washington franchise by the league is an announcement from Head Office. Owner Dan Snyder has no more cards to play and a fee has been agreed for the NFL to purchase the franchise from Snyder so that a tender process can be undertaken to decide who the next owner will be. That much is still yet to be decided, but the location of that team doesn't appear to be in question either. The NFL will be heading to London by 2020.

2nd Down - Damage done, but Antonio Brown might be out in Pittsburgh

I think most NFL fans are aware that the Steelers made a number of concessions to their roster to franchise tag top tier receiver Antonio Brown last summer. Well Brown has spent the majority of the season injured and the free time hasn't been good for Antonio. His name surfaced with a less than reputable sports memorabilia ring earlier this season and whilst nothing has been proven, it just didn't look good. From what I'm hearing, Brown has worn out his welcome with the team despite his talent and will be sent on his way once the season is completed. If only Pittsburgh had seen this coming before those roster moves in the summer.

3rd Down - Nate Patterson goes down, done for the season

Nate Patterson is one of a wave of new passers in the league with a bright looking future. With Jack Riley also on IR for the Jets, it is a shame we can't see these players helping their struggling teams. It appears that Patterson's shoulder is going to keep him out for the rest of the regular season and that is sure to be pretty terminal to an already weak Bears team. It isn't long since their last #1 pick, they might have another one coming soon.

4th Down - Everyone's seat just got hotter, look who's back!

It is around this time in the season that coaches start to cast glances around to see who might be moving on and who will get another season to prove their worth. Owners will be salivating at one potential coaching replacement that threw his hat into the ring yesterday though. Super Bowl 37 winning coach Jon Gruden announce on air during this week's Monday Night Football coverage that he was actively pursuing a return to coaching for next season. Whilst admitting he will stay in the commentary booth if nothing to his liking comes up, Twitter absolutely blew up at the news!

I'm starting to think the QB position for the Bears might be jinxed. I'm going to jump over to Pro Football Reference and do some research, I'll get back to you in a few weeks!

Your Path To The Hottest Draft Talent!

            Lloyd Bowerman, Senior Draft Writer

            Draft Preview - Defence

As I mentioned a number of weeks ago, this is a defence heavy draft. Those numbers are skewed by the ridiculous linebacker class that has come out of the college system this season, that position may be remembered very much like the QB class from last year. Let's take a look.

            DEFENCE

            DT
            • Somewhat of a down year for the big guys in the middle, there are a couple of players who could make a splash in the first round, but 3 or 4 who will be gone in round 2. Good depth to this class, if not star power.
            • The top of this group is Jeffery Doyle from Oklahoma. The senior from Texas has been a beast for his entire collegiate career. Some have issues about his ability to get off a block, but at 6'3" and a tick under 300lb, he is very coachable and should be the first DT off the board.
            • R.J Ingram could be the next off the list after Doyle, but there isn't much to choose from between Ingram as a late 1st/early 2nd pick and other DTs like Kedron Jeffery and the top 3-4 prospect Marquise Dobbs.
            • Konrad Klein is a non-factor at this point. He started the season as a comfortable 2nd rounder, but his academic issues and personal struggles have left him pretty much undraftable, even by NFL standards.

            DE
            • This is a really divisive class. I wouldn't be surprised to see only 1 or 2 ends taken in the first round. It also wouldn't surprise me to see 6 or 7 taken. It really will depend on team preference, but that's the nature of the draft!
            • Top of the tree may be Tyri Mason who has the rare combination of both power and finesse moves to beat his blocker. He used both to devastating effect in that Rose Bowl last season and has continued to excel this season, leading the country in sacks.
            • If my lower estimate is correct, it may be 6'7 Jermane Owens from Pit that joins Mason in round 1. If it's the upper estimate? Throw Griffin, Penn, Phillip and a few others into the mix.
            • I don't see any of this class going inside the top 10. If there is a rush on the position it will be at the end of the 1st round and the beginning of the 2nd. I have 4 DEs with a first round grade myself.

            OLB
            • Potentially the strongest OLB class that has come out of college in a LONG time. 4 years ago, teams fell over themselves to pick OLBs with 7 going off the board on day 1. That year I only had 4 with a 1st round grade. This year (and I went back to the film to check over and over), I have 7. I think a lot will depend on the DE class though. There are only 32 selections each round. If DE eats a lot of picks, expect quality OLBs to drop to round 2, and vica versa. Either way, expect teams looking for defensive help in the front 7 to be delighted this year.
            • With so much talent in this class, it is hard to pick a top guy. For me, it is between Malcolm Pruitt and Ben McGee. The former is more rounded as a player, the latter is a better tackler and a punishing hitter in the open field.
            • After that, Nick Sims is my favourite player from this group. The Buckeye was a dominant force in Ohio State's recent dominance of the NCAA and he is sure to feature in the 1st round. He is perhaps the best blitzing LB in this draft.
            • Other names to look out for in round 1 are Marquise Griffin, Phillip Benjamin, Malcolm Browning and Tamarcus Black. There are probably another 3 or 4 guys with a 2nd round grade as well, this is honestly a loaded class.

            MLB
            • It is impossible to compete with the OLB class above, but this is a down year for line backers that ply their trade in the middle. That was similar 4 years ago. Perhaps some of the better prospects elect to stay in college to avoid getting lost in the mix at OLB.
            • Keevon Jones may end up being the man to break the 1st round if anyone from this position does, but even as the top player in this position his skills are still overshadowed by perhaps even 10 players at OLB that teams are likely to call on first.
            • One man looking to emulate a campus hero is Boston College's Forrest Reed. The last great linebacker to come from the home of the Eagles was Carolina's Luke Kuechly. If a team could find a player even half as good as Kuechly they would be happy. Reed has a late round grade for me though.

            CB
            • Parker Middleton will understandable be in the mix for a top 5 selection. The final notable member of the “Holy Noley” secondary, the Florida State man will be looking to emulate his fellow classmates as he takes the step to the next level.
            • One player I get a lot of questions about is Melvin Jackson. Some suggest that the defensive pressure at Ohio State allowed him to exceed his skills. Some seem to think he is the real deal. I think that someone will take him early and I am not sure that it's the right idea. I see issues with his hips and the way he breaks on the ball. Not an awful selection, but not a first rounder for me.
            • It is a reasonable class for corners. There will be 6 or 7 taken in the first few rounds, possibly 7 dependent on the note about Jackson above.
            • My favourite player is Gordon Peterson. A lot of people have the physical corner as low as a 4th or 5th pick, but I think he could be really effective at the next level. People have a slight against him due to his height of 5'10", but this guy jumps off the screen when I watch his tape and his hands are brutal at times.

            S
            • This is the weakest safety class I have seen in a number of years, teams are going to have to look elsewhere and boost the free agent market prices if they have a hole to fill.
            • It emphasises the point above that the top safety in this class for me is either Johnathan Scott or Nathan Gilbert and I have both as a 3rd or 4th round pick. That isn't to say neither player can't be moulded into a quality NFL prospect, but it suggests they currently have issues in their game they need to solve. That is what earns a coach the big bucks though!
            • An alternative route would be to select an oversized corner that displays solid transferable skills. Someone like Elijah Curtis from USC would fit the bill. At 6'0" and 194lb he wouldn't be far off having the attributes to play at FS, and 15lb off bulking up to be a SS. He also exhibits above average skills in both man and zone coverage for me.

The 4 Quick Takes From This Week's NFL

              Amanda Reditch

Welcome back readers, I can't wait to throw some more interesting looks your way as we take a walk through the ever changing NFL landscape. It never ceases to amaze me just how much is going on day to day in this league!

1st Down - Giants and Dolphins turn it around

Both Miami and the New York Giants were complete lost causes last year but used the draft to restock at key positions and are now having significantly more success. New York have completely embraced the Bryson Tracy era from the start and they have been rewarded with fine play, highlight reel material and most importantly, victories. Miami have used Claude McDonald sparingly but it has been more than enough to spur Ryan Tannerhill into Pro Bowl form. Miami may even make the play-offs, though it may be too much for NYG.

2nd Down - Speaking of those Giants....

Has anyone else seen how much Eli Manning has been hanging around the Giants Complex this last month?! Everyone knows Marvin Lewis is on thin ice regardless of the teams upswing this season, but why exactly is Eli there? Nothing has been announced by the front office, he doesn't appear to be working with the QBs in the open sections of practice, instead chatting away to owner Steve Tisch. When prompted on the subject, the Giants simply trot out the lines about Manning always being a welcome part of the Giants family, blah blah blah. I'd love to be a fly on the wall for some of those conversations.

3rd Down - The unstoppable force in the South

It could almost be the nickname of a heavyweight boxer, but I am of course referring to those Cowboys. Can they end their 23 year wait and grab a Lombardi? Anything is possible, but they look in the ascendency right now. Dominant on offence, overwhelming on defence, they are putting together a season for fans to remember. For their sake, this year needs to end with a championship. Right now, I'm not sure who could stop them.

4th Down - Trouble in Tampa, modern day piracy!

With his rookie contract at an end, it appears Todd Gurley isn't the only player causing a headache for the team that drafted him. Winston wants out of Tampa and he hasn't been shy about it. Whilst the team could tag him, they also need to keep an eye on Mike Evans, who will also need a contract this off-season. Even with the tag, there is no guarantee Winston signs it and things could get messy. At this stage, it's entirely possible that the 4 year Buccaneer takes to the high seas and sets sail for somewhere new in the summer, possibly taking the chances of any immediate success for the team with him. As a club who will have probably been casting glances at old flame Jon Gruden, this kind of a mess isn't going to come close to appealing to him.

So there we are. I can't believe I managed to get through that whole last down giving it a pirate slant and I didn't once mention crabs or crab legs. #professionaljournalist

Covering your teams better than anyone else

Dante Fowler Resigns In Jacksonville on Deal That Sends NFL into Tailspin

Around this time of year, the term "home town discount" may get banded around by some agents looking to keep their clients in their current location whilst generating some positive PR. Players are still paid handsomely, but the perception of a team friendly guy gets fans on-side as assurances are made that a contract was cheaper than it could have perhaps been. Dante Fowler Jr. just took that to a new level, and a lot of NFL teams I spoke to really don't know what to make of it.

Fowler has been on a mission to impress since he lost his entire rookie season to an ACL injury during the very first day of mini camp. Since returning, the former Florida Gator has been nothing short of spectacular for Jacksonville. His numbers stack up with notables at his position such as JJ Watt and Khalil Mack over the last 3 years. With Mack penning his own 6 year, $104m deal last off-season in Oakland, the bar was set for Fowler to name his price around the $18m a season mark and see how free agency panned out. Instead, try $30m over 4 years.

"A lot of people talk about security, and making the money while you can. My rookie deal made me nearly $24m, and I intent to play my heart out for these Jaguars and earn another $30m over the next 4 years. If you show me a man who can't be happy and secure with $54m in their pocket, I'll show you a fool." said the Florida native, who has spent his entire life and footballing career in the state. "I love this team, I love where we are. I wouldn't want to be anywhere else and money doesn't change that. Florida is home for me, nowhere else would be, not even for $100m."

The fact that the Jaguars have at their disposal one of the very best defensive players in the league at a very cheap price has not only left mouthes in front office around the country speechless, it has them worried. "Unheard of, simply. To get a guy like that for that price. For me, he's worth 20 [million] a year, easily" one AFC GM told me. "I know the guy is happy with his lot, nobody is going to tell him otherwise. Word around the league is this was his number, it wasn't the front office playing some crazy hardball with him. Bet it didn't take them long to find a pen to sign on the dotted line though!"

The worry comes in from player power. In a hard salary cap sport, players recruiting fellow players to build a dynasty, like the NBA's Miami Heat managed for a while several years back with Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh and LeBron James, is much more difficult. The best players come in to town on the biggest bucks and with a full 53 man roster to pay, you can only have so many star players and remain under the cap. That is what has one NFL owner worried. "It upsets the status quo. Maybe Fowler gets a few other buddies over from around the league as their contracts expire, they decide they don't really want paying much either. Suddenly they have an All-Pro defensive line getting paid peanuts. Its dangerous."

The Jags have just completed a sub-par 6-9-1 season that could cost Gary Kubiak his job. One thing is for sure though, the future is bright for Jacksonville regardless of who it is that calls the shots on the sideline.

                      Year 4 18/19 - Conference

                      FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

NEW YORK - Effective from the beginning of the NFL calendar in 2020/21, the former Washington Redskins organisation will be reallocated to London, England. The franchise in London will not be a transference, but a new entity. Any franchise that moves to the Washington area in the future may submit a claim to its records and history, should it be deemed suitable.

The expansion of the NFL to Mexico City paved the way for a further international franchise. The appetite displayed during the highly successful International Series illustrated a clear desire from UK fans to become a part of the NFL family.

The newly founded franchise is to be based in London primarily, with 4 regular season games and all playoff games being held at Wembley Stadium (90,000 capacity).

The remaining 4 regular season games will be based around the UK on a rotational basis. This rotation will involve a bi-annual tender process. With the continued improvement and financial affluence of the Premier League and UK soccer as a whole, the country is fortunate to boast a number of stadia capable of supporting an NFL franchise. Due to renovations and expansion inside the last 5 seasons, the 4 external sites for the 2020/21 season will be as follows:
                      • Old Trafford (Manchester, 81,231 capacity)
                      • Murrayfield (Edinburgh, 76,244)
                      • Millenium Stadium (Cardiff, 74,500 capacity)
                      • Lineker Stadium (Leicester, formerly King Power Stadium, 66,000 capacity)

The franchise's training facility will be housed within the National Football Centre, St George's Park, Staffordshire. A state of the art facility opened in 2012, the centre is a hub for sporting excellence and is proud to welcome the NFL to the UK.

At present the Washington Redskins franchise will operate under league control until a process can be undertaken to find a buyer. This will be expedited as much as possible but the team will remain in its current status on the pitch for the 2019/20 season.

Details on team name, logo, branding and playing uniform will be announced in due course.

For the new London franchise, I hope they pick the Monarchs identity because I loved NFL Europe.

Relocation and stadium expansion relies on a few things. One is a 5% roll at the start of a season for each event, then it also has to make sense. For example, Dallas wouldn't build a new stadium. I've had a few teams roll a relocation and a few roll a stadium that I ignored as it just wasn't logical. If a west coast team with a need rolls it though, could well happen.

Not being able to manually realign teams also limits things somewhat. That's why Washington had to stay East.

After their unbelievable season, I don't think anyone expected a Super Bowl winner to come from anywhere but Dallas. But, that is the joy of the sport we all love. Despite having to endure watching Carson Dietrich mope around the office, it was a worthy end to an exceptional year!

Chicago Bears - Last Season 3-13

For the 2nd time in 4 years, Chicago were the recipients of the #1 pick in the draft. With a clear QB of the future in place in Nate Patterson, the Bears elected to keep the pick and draft LB phenom Malcolm Pruitt. Whilst his ability can't be questioned, many have criticised the pick simply for the position Pruitt plays and the need to select a linebacker so highly in the draft. Perhaps a wiser choice to address would have been safety, where the Bears continue to struggle for both starters and depth. Most other positions on defence appear covered at least, with Jose Lunsford now an established starter heading into the final year of his rookie contract and DT Jye Mason looking a solid player. The offence is heavily dependent on Patterson and he appears to be really making strides as he enters his 4th year in the league. Kevin White has left town, leaving a hole that wasn't addressed in the off season. Also at WR, Jeffrey should continue to be excel despite his age, but the same cannot be said for starting RB Jonathan Stewart. His best years are behind him. It is a shame that Jeff Fisher couldn't keep this team on an upswing, this year will be crucial for his future.

Green Bay Packers - Last Season 9-7

A wildcard loss was too much for Chuck Pagano, he was relieved of his duties as the Packers continue to push for one last title before Aaron Rodgers retires. That task has now been passed to a coach that knows Super Bowl success and also elite QB play in Sean Payton, who no doubt sees Rodgers as an ideal man for his QB driven scheme. That offence hasn't been helped by the retirement of Jordy Nelson, a consistent league leading receiver during recent seasons. His place now passes to Randall Cobb and Davonte Adams takes up the #2 role. Eddie Lacy is still a top tier back, the Packers will do well to lean on him this season, especially considering their improved offensive line. As has been common in the last handful of years, Green Bay continue to prop up the league in terms of defensive talent. Stacey Winston is the only stand out player they have, especially now Clay Matthews has been released due to a combination of age and unhappiness at the general defensive demise of the team. This Packers side could give up a ton of points this season and success is far from guaranteed.

Notable Resignings - WR Randall Cobb (franchise tag)

Detroit Lions - Last Season 10-6

The Lions were much improved in their first season under Mike Shula. Now moving into his 2nd season as a Head Coach, the Lions front office pulled the trigger on one of the biggest moves of the off-season in hope of vaulting up the standings. Jameis Winston now calls Detroit home, presumably signalling the end of the Morgan Lucas era after just 1 season. Ameer Abdullah also left Detroit in the summer, unhappy with the direction the team was taking. That leaves the offence with no clear starter at RB, a new QB, little at WR after Calvin Johnson and a poor offensive line bar last year's 1st round pick BJ Scruggs. Defensively, things look brighter. Stephen Tulloch has retired, but stud DE Ansah has resigned, an important move. With a strong LB group and Glover Quin at FS, the foundations still remain for success on that side of the ball. If Detroit can find answers on offence, this team could surprise people.

Notable Resignings - DE Ezekiel Ansah

Minnesota Vikings - Last Season 10-5-1

Life after Adrian Peterson proved to be just fine for the Vikings, Julius Shaw looks like a worthy successor to the throne. Brian Billick also showed he is still a very capable coach, grabbing the NFC's #2 seed last season before a heartbreaking 1 point loss in the Divisional round. Looking to go further this season, Minnesota resigned key DE Everson Griffin with the franchise tag and resigned Linval Joseph. Try as they might, the Vikings couldn't keep star linebacker Anthony Barr, that may be too big a blow to overcome. Elsewhere the defence looks solid, but there will be a lot on the shoulders of CB Xavier Rhodes. He is the star of that unit and there isn't a lot behind him. Offence continues to look similar to last season with a dependable Teddy Bridgewater working with Shaw to put up points. The biggest question could be how well Mike Buchanan and rookie Jaren Jones can play at receiver despite their inexperience, Buchanan specifically hasn't impressed since being drafted. The offensive line continues to be well above average.

Notable Resignings - DE Everson Griffen (franchise tag), DT Linval Joseph
