      Game Notes
The Jets play their first prime time game this week as they host the 2-0 Chicago Bears on Monday Night Football. The Bears enter the matchup coming off a surprising road victory over the 49ers. They will be without star running back Matt Forte who suffered an injury in last weeks win, but the Bears still field a formidable offense with his absence.

The Jets will have their hands full dealing with one of the better receiving corps in the league. Brandon Marshall, Alshon Jeffery, and Martellus Bennett will pose matchup problems so it will be important for the Jets to get pressure on Jay Cutler if they have any hopes of slowing down the Bears pass offense.

New York enters week three with the top ranked offense in the league, led by a strong offensive line that has controlled the line of scrimmage in their first two games. Chris Ivory is tops in the league in rushing and Geno Smith has yet to be sacked. The time in the pocket has allowed Smith to get off to a surprisingly good start and it will be key again against the Bears.

The Jets are favorites at home by 3.5.

Jets sack Cutler 6 times, improve to 3-0

        Newsday Sports
        Jack Reilly

East Rutherford, N.J. -- In front of a national audience on Monday night the Jets defense proved for the third straight week they’re a unit to be reckoned with. Bears QB Jay Cutler threw for over 300 yards, but the Jets pass rush was relentless in their pursuit and limited the Bears to just one touchdown in a hard fought 27-13 victory.

The defensive fireworks started early when the David Harris sacked Cutler on the first play from scrimmage, forcing a fumble that was recovered by Damon Harrison on the Chicago 20 yard line. Two plays later Geno Smith would rollout on a play action pass and find Eric Decker in the front corner of the end zone for a touchdown. With early momentum on their side, the Jets would force a quick three and out on the Bears next possession. It was then time for the offense to flex their muscle as the offensive line opened holes for Chris Ivory on a 9 play drive deep into Chicago territory. The drive would stall on a holding penalty on Chris Johnson, resulting in a 41 yard Nick Folk field goal.

On Chicago’s next two possessions Jay Cutler would find his groove and engineer two long drives, but the Jets defense would limit them to just 3 points keyed by two sacks that ended each drive. The Jets would continue their trend of scoring before the half as they traveled 51 yards on 11 plays. On 3rd and goal inside the Bears 10, Geno Smith would be sacked for the first time this season by Jared Allen, forcing a Nick Folk 37 yard field goal to give the Jets a 13-3 halftime lead.

The Jets would receive the ball to start the second half and conduct a drive that has been their signature so far this season. Geno Smith would complete 3 passes for 40 yards and Chris Ivory would charge forward on 4 carries for 33 yards on a drive that was capped off by a Chris Johnson 5 yard touchdown run, his first as a Jet. The 10 play, 81 yard drive gave the Jets a commanding 20-3 lead. The Bears would respond with a long possession of their own, highlighted by a 26 yard completion to Brandon Marshall, but once again be held to a field goal.

The Jets would again put together a double digit play drive as they traveled 72 yards on 16 plays to the Bears 8 yard line. On 3rd and goal Geno Smith would find Jeremy Kerley across the middle, but he would fumble and safety Chris Conte recovered for the Bears. That seemed to be the break Chicago needed as Jay Cutler would move the Bears quickly down the field and find tight end Martellus Bennett for a 15 yard score.

With their lead cut to seven in the fourth quarter, the Jets needed to respond and they did just that on the ensuing kickoff. Jeremy Kerley would look to atone for his earlier mishap as he returned the ball for 45 yards giving the Jets excellent starting field position at mid field. Kerley would then make a key catch on 3rd and 6 for 24 yards that set up a Chris Ivory 3 yard touchdown run.

Chicago would make one last push as they quickly moved the ball 64 yards on 3 plays, but the Jets defense would come up with a stop as Muhammad Wilkerson sacked Cutler forcing a 4th down and 17. Cutler would complete a pass to Brandon Marshall, but he would come up short of the first down, effective ending the game.

A boisterous Rex Ryan after the game said, “I loved how we played today, real smash-mouth football! Our QB really showed me something today. He played within himself, trusted his teammates, and made the plays that needed to be made.”

Next up for the are the 3-0 Detroit Lions next week at home. The Jets had no injuries to report.

The offense is continuing to look sharp with Geno at the helm and the ground game is doing some serious work. Heck of a start for you guys!

On a sidenote, the presentation is looking absolutely fantastic man. Very nice job with this.

I'm very surprised by Geno so far. There's been a little luck in that there's been a few dropped int's, but his deep ball accuracy has been very good and Amaro and Kerley are beginning to emerge. The defense has been great, but I'm still worried about the secondary. They'll be exposed eventually. We're facing Stafford, Rivers, Manning, and Brady in the coming weeks.

Thank you for the comments on layout. I feel like I'm in the "infancy stage" of my dynasty reporting. Slowly but surely I will improve on it, but as long as someone is enjoying it, that's all that matters.

Thanks for checking it out BB!

I must say even just a few games in, I haven't enjoyed a Madden franchise like this probably since 07 on PS2. I think posting it in here has a lot to do with that.

                    Game Notes
Two undefeated teams will collide this Sunday as the Jets host the 3-0 Detroit Lions at MetLife Stadium. This will New York's third consecutive matchup against a NFC North opponent as they enter the game with the leagues topped ranked defense and second ranked offense. Both will be put to the test as the Lions field a lethal passing attack that has lived off big plays in their first three games.

The Lions enter the game coming off an impressive home victory over the struggling Packers, but the win was costly as they lost rookie TE Eric Ebron for the year with a knee injury. A week earlier they saw DE Ezekiel Ansah go down with a season ending injury as well so the Lions will be without two of their young stars for the game.

This will be a big test for the Jets secondary as they face one of the premier passing attacks in the league. Matthew Stafford and Calvin Johnson have linked up for big plays this season and free agent addition Golden Tate is a nightmare in the open field. The Jets will have to duplicate their pass rush performance from a week ago if they hope to slow down the league's second ranked pass offense. Limiting turnovers and continuing their trend of time consuming drives will be important for the offense.

The Jets are 1.5 point favorites.

East Rutherford, N.J. -- The Jets three game winning streak to open the 2014 season came to an end Sunday on a miserable, rain soaked, 4th quarter collapse that was reminiscent of so many that Jets fans have witnessed before. After taking what looked to be a commanding eleven point lead early in the final quarter, the Jets would let up 14 unanswered points to the Lions in a 31-28 loss.

The game’s scoring wouldn't come until the 2nd quarter, but when it did it came in a flurry. Detroit conducted a 15 play drive deep into Jets territory, but was stopped short when Sheldon Richardson sacked Matthew Stafford and forced a Rian Lindell field goal. It was the type of defensive stop that the Jets have been known for this season. The Jets quickly responded when Geno Smith found Jeremy Kerley for a 67 yard pass play that set up a Chris Ivory 3 yard touchdown run. The early 7-3 lead wasn’t much, but it seemed the game was taking the shape of the other Jets victories so far this season. That would change on the Lions next series.

Following a 39 yard kickoff return, the Lions would drive 64 yards and score on a 17 yard pass from Stafford to Golden Tate. On the play Tate would beat CB Dee Milliner badly and walk into the end zone untouched. This would be a sign of things to come, but not before the Jets would answer with another quick strike of their own. On a 3rd and 6 from the Lions 41 yard line, Geno Smith put up a jump ball for rookie Jace Amaro, who shielded his defender at the goal line to come down with his second touchdown catch of the year and give the Jets a 14-10 lead.

The teams would continue to trade punches at the end of the half when Matthew Stafford again would find a wide open Tate, this time getting the better of Chris Houston for a 47 yard score. With just over one minute on the clock the Jets would once again engineer a scoring drive to close out the half. Geno Smith would go 5/7 for 75 yards and cap off the drive by hitting Jeremy Kerley in the back of the end zone for a 10 yard touchdown giving the Jets a 21-17 halftime lead.

The Jets defense would return to form in the second half, sacking Stafford twice and getting their first interception of the year. David Harris would make great athletic play on a ball over the middle intended for TE Kris Durham. The Jets would capitalize on the turnover when early in the 4th quarter Chris Ivory would punch one into the end zone from 7 yards out, extending the Jets lead to 28-17.

Detroit would shave the lead to eight after a Lindell 36 yard field goal and that's when the Jets offense began to falter. Unlike their previous three games, the Jets were unable to mount a sustainable drive. Following a Jets three and out Stafford would lead a 5 play 54 yard possession that culminated in a 14 YD touchdown to TE Kris Durham. He would then find Durham again in a two point conversion to tie the game at 28-28.

The jets offense would again go three and out this time allowing two sacks by Daryl Tapp. The Lions would take advantage of good field position, and after two quick completions to Calvin Johnson for 20 yards and Golden Tate for 16, they would run the ball three consecutive times forcing the Jets to use their time outs. Rian Lindell would connect on his third field goal of the day giving the Lions the lead 31-28 with just 28 seconds remaining. The Jets would come up empty on their final drive, ending a crushing loss.

After game game a disgusted Rex Ryan told reporters, "We had this game and we let it slip away. There's no excuse for those blown coverages. We can't give up 4th quarter leads at home if we expect to be a playoff team." DE Sheldon Richardson left the game in the 3rd quarter with a neck injury. His status for next weeks game at San Diego is unknown at this time.

Thanks for following along Cheese. I really thought I had it after that Ivory TD in the 4th. Those final 10 mins were brutal.

The Jets will make their only trip to west coast this season as they travel to San Diego to take on the 2-2 Chargers. New York will look to get back on the winning track following a disappointing home loss last week to the Lions. The Chargers return home after being soundly defeated by the Buffalo Bills in week 3.

San Diego's offense is off to a slow start thanks in part to being hit hard injuries. They will be without three starters along the offensive line and WR Malcom Floyd for this week's matchup. The Jets field one of the top defensive fronts in the league ranking 6th in the NFL against the rush, and leading the league in sacks. New York has a decided edge in the trenches on both sides of the ball, but look for Philip Rivers to take advantage of a Jets secondary that was torched by Matthew Stafford last week.

The Jets are 2.5 point favorites.

San Diego, CA -- The New York Jets entered Sunday’s game in San Diego looking to rebound from a disastrous loss at home last week. After one half of football they seemed to be well on their way to doing so, but for the second straight week they would surrender a double digit second half lead. Four turnovers would prove to be too much to overcome as the Jets lost their second game of the year by the score of 34-27.

The Jets came out fast in what was a dominating first quarter of action. Quinton Coples would record one of his three sacks early as the Jets forced a quick three and out on the Chargers first possession. Following a 28 yard punt by the usually reliable Mike Scifres, New York’s offense traveled 47 yards resulting in a Geno Smith quarterback sneak on 4th and goal for a 7-0 lead. San Diego would fail to get a first down on their next possession and the Jets would again be given a short field to work with. On 2nd and 10 from the chargers 44 yard line, Geno Smith would complete a pass to tight end Jace Amaro for a quick touchdown strike giving the Jets a commanding 14-0 advantage.

Early signs pointed to a Jets blowout win, but that would change on the Jets next possession. On 2nd and 13 on New York’s 43 yard line, Geno Smith’s pass intended for Jeremy Kerley was picked off by Chargers CB Jason Verrett and returned for a touchdown. On the pass Smith would comment in postgame, “My guy was open, I just didn't put enough zip on it and gave the corner too much time to react.”

Following the pick six the Jets would move the ball to the Chargers 28 yard line, but Smith was sacked for a 9 yard loss on third down and they were forced to punt. The Jets would manage to add three points before the end of the half on a Nick Folk 47 yard field goal giving the Jets a 17-7 lead at the break.

New York received the second half kickoff and that’s when the Chargers would get the momentum shift they needed. Jeremy Kerley fumbled the return that was recovered by the Chargers on the Jets 28 yard line. Kerley would be injured on the play and miss the rest of the third quarter. San Diego made the most out of the turnover as RB Danny Woodhead scored on a three yard run to close the deficit to three.

On the Chargers next possession Woodhead would finally breakout from what was a suffocating run defense by the Jets up to that point. Woodhead avoided the tackle of safety Antonio Allen and streaked down the sideline for a 69 yard touchdown, giving San Diego their first lead of the game. That lead was short lived as the ensuing kickoff was returned 94 yards by Jets rookie Shaq Evans, making the score 24-21 in the Jets favor.

The Chargers would tie the game later in the quarter on a Nick Novak 40 yard field goal, and that’s when the Geno Smith’s struggles would begin and Philip Rivers would find his stride. On a 2nd and 10 from the Chargers 23 yard line, Smith would be picked off by linebacker Donald Butler ending the scoring chance. Rivers would then lead an 8 play 77 yard drive ending in a six yard touchdown pass to receiver Seyi Ajirotutu.

San Diego’s defense was surprisingly stout against the Jets third ranked running attack, limiting New York to just 40 yards on the ground. The Jets turned to their passing game and had some success moving the ball, but the Chargers Donald Butler would get his second pick of the day at the San Diego’s six yard line. Philip Rivers would again lead a long drive late in the 4th quarter ending in a Novak 35 yard field goal, extending their lead to 34-24.

New York would make one last push, but they ate up too much of the clock on a ten play drive. Needing ten points to tie and only one timeout remaining, the Jets opted for a 27 yard field goal with less than one minute remaining. Nick Folk’s onside kick was then recovered by the Chargers which ended the game.
