Tough loss against a very good Broncos team. Ball was a man on a mission in this one, while it looks like your ground game could get nothing going on the ground. Hopefully you can stop this skid.

As for the storylines, just fantastic my friend. I am loving it just loving it and reading every word.

That Denver defense was really fast. Our running game has lost some steam, but the defense is my big worry right now. In our first 3 games we gave up no more than 16 point in a game. In the last three we haven't held anyone under 30. Blown coverages and miss tackles the main culprits.

Also, the 3 teams we beat have a combine record of 4-13. The teams we lost to, 11-6.

        Game Notes
The big surprise of the week for the Jets came with the announcement of the firing of GM John Idzik. New York will look to pull off their second of the week as they face the New England Patriots in Foxborough on Thursday night.

The Jets defensive struggles continued last week against the Broncos and they won't catch a break as they face the 4th ranked Patriot offense. New England also boasts the 6th ranked defense headlined by former Jets CB Derrelle Revis who plays his first game as a member of the Patriots versus the Jets.

New England was subjected to a surprise of their own last week as they dropped their first game of the season to the upstart Bills. The Patriots will be without a number of key players on both offense and defense, but you can't ever count them out as long as the tandem of Brady & Belichick is present.

The formula is simple for the Jets this week. Get pressure on Brady and avoid committing turnovers.

          The More Things Change...

Jets squander 4th quarter lead, drop 4th straight

           photo image_5.jpg

          Newsday Sports
          Jack Reilly

Foxborough, MA -- The Jets have seen a lot of changes in the last three months. A new owner, a new GM, and new ticket pricing, but on the field the Jets have found themselves in a very familiar position. The teams promising 3-0 start has quickly collapsed after another agonizing loss to the Patriots on Thursday night. New York held a 7 point lead heading into the 4th quarter, but gave up 14 unanswered points in the final period losing by the final score of 31-24.

Heading into the game the Jets needed to mount pressure on Tom Brady and avoid costly turnovers. They accomplished neither. After forcing a three and out on the Patriots first drive, Jeremy Kerley would muff the ensuing punt and New England recovered the ball on the Jets 25 yard line. On the very next play Tom Brady hooked up with TE D. J. Williams for a touchdown, giving the Patriots the early lead.

The Jets responded on their first possession by going on a 10 play 76 yard drive and tying the game on a Chris Ivory 3 yard touchdown run. On the drive Geno Smith would complete passes of 17, 12, and 16 yards consecutively. Jace Amaro, who has become Smith's favorite target and a candidate for rookie of the year, kept the drive alive with a beautiful diving catch.

           photo image_6.jpg
          Amaro's catch kept drive alive

Both defenses would settle in after the early scoring as just 3 points would be put up between the two teams for the next 6 possessions. The scoring drought would end when both teams found the end zone in the final two minutes of the half. Tom Brady would take advantage of good field position and find Danny Amendola for a 5 yard score. Then with just 1:25 left on the clock Geno Smith orchestrated a six play, 79 yard drive. Three passes over 20 yards set the Jets up for a 7 yard touchdown pass to Bilal Powell ending the half down by just three, 17-14.

The second half saw 3 lead changes to go with 3 costly turnovers. New York was unable to build on the momentum of their late first half score as Geno Smith was intercepted by linebacker Jerod Mayo on the Jets first possession. New York's defense would force a three and out and after a Nick Folk 52 yard field goal, they got their first defensive touchdown of the season when Chris Houston picked off Tom Brady and returned it 30 yards giving the Jets their first lead.

Chris Houston's 1st pick of year gave Jets lead

Unfortunately for the Jets, that's as good as it would get as the Patriots took control of the fourth quarter. Tom Brady shook off his earlier turnover and led a 12 play 89 yard drive that ended with a Shane Vereen 4 yard touchdown run to tie the game at 24 with ten minutes remaining.

New England would get the ball back and string together another long drive that was capped off by a 12 yard touchdown pass to Rob Gronkowski, who broke the tackles of two Jets defenders to reach the end zone.

The Jets got the ball back with just over two minutes remaining, down by seven. They would reach the Patriots 39 yard line, but on 2nd and 5 Geno Smith threw his second interception of the day, ending the Jets hopes of snapping their losing streak.

Logan Ryan ends Jets comeback attempt

A frustrated Rex Ryan commented after the game, "We're almost there. We played much better today, we just gotta learn how to close the deal."

The Chris Johnson saga continues as the disgruntled running back did not play and has made himself unavailable to the media. Along with learning to close games, the Jets would be best served in finding a solution to this ongoing distraction.

Tough loss to the Patriots, especially with holding the lead heading into the final frame. The running game has dropped off a bit. The problems on the field (and off) need to be addressed in that area. Geno continues to drop off from his hot start.

I am absolutely loving the writing and storylines in this one. It has been very fun to follow.

              Thanks, Cheese!

Definitely a tough one to swallow, but we did seem to play better overall. The run game has struggled for sure and so far Geno has needed it to take the pressure off him some. The defense played pretty well up until that 4th quarter. I was surprised we couldn't get more pressure in Brady with all the injuries they had on the oline. Finally got a big play from the secondary, but the defense has just 5 forced turnovers in 7 games. That has to change.

We're at that point where some changes need to be made to save the season. Big game at home vs Buffalo coming up!

                  Chris Johnson Traded to Atlanta

The ongoing rift between Jets running back Chris Johnson and the Jets coaching staff has come to an end. Today General Manager Rod Graves announced, in his first move in his new position, the trade of Johnson to the Atlanta Falcons. In return the Jets will receive Atlanta’s fifth round pick in next April’s draft.

Signed this past spring by former GM John Idzik, Johnson time with the Jets was short lived. The relationship turned sour after Johnson voiced displeasure in his role in the offense to the media following the Jets loss to San Diego. The situation escalated on the teams’ flight home as it was reported that Johnson and Offensive Coordinator Marty Morninweg were involved in a heated exchange. Johnson would see his playing time diminish the next two games and he eventually stopped talking to the media.

Graves commented on the trade by saying, “It’s unfortunate that things with Chris couldn’t be resolved. When he was signed, the hope was that he could add an element we felt was missing in our backfield, but it just didn’t materialize. He’s a talented player and we wish him the best as he continues his career.”

A source close to the trade negotiations said that the Jets were in talks with San Diego and Atlanta. The Chargers lost Danny Woodhead for the season with an ACL injury on Sunday, and the Falcons will be without Steven Jackson for the next seven weeks. One NFL executive commented on the deal, “It’s tough to move an underperforming, disgruntled player during the season. Other teams will usually wait for that player to be released, but the Jets got a bit lucky with some injuries around the league and they seemed to use that as leverage.”

The Jets will incur a $3 million salary cap hit for moving Johnson, half of which will be on the books this season, the second half next season. New York signed running back Alex Green from their practice squad to replace Johnson’s roster spot.

Definitely like the trade to move Johnson. It needed to happen especially with him being a headache. Would have rather you not shipped him to my Falcons (Atlanta and Buffalo are my teams) but what can you do. Maybe he won't cause problems there. Do you see Green getting in touches anytime soon?

With Stephen Jackson going down for an extended period the Falcons were thin at RB and they're in a three way chase for their division right now. It came down to them or the Chargers so I decided to ship him out of the conference.

Alex Green (74 ovr) is an interesting player. He's similar to Ivory, but has a little better burst and is younger (24). In limited time this preseason he had 8 carries, 104 yards and 2 tds. If Ivory misses any time Green will definitely get some touches, but I like what we have in Powell too. He's surprisingly tough b/t the tackles, can catch, and pass blocks well. Johnson was terrible in pass protection (holding penalties) and went down too easily.

The Jets reach the half way point in their season as they return home to face the Buffalo Bills in a week eight divisional match-up. One the the early surprises of the 2014 season, Buffalo enters the game off a blowout loss to Minnesota in week seven. The Jets are reeling as they've lost four straight, the most recent being a heartbreaking defeat to division leader New England.

Buffalo ranks in the middle of the pack in most categories, but they've proven to be very opportunistic as they lead the league in forced turnovers. QB E.J. Manuel has done a good job managing the offense and has used his legs well.

New York has made headlines the last two weeks. First with the firing of their GM and then this week trading Chris Johnson. Head Coach Rex Ryan also announced today that Jaiquwan Jarrett will get the start at FS over the struggling Antonio Allen. Look for the Jets to add another wrinkle or two in this one as they desperately need to end their 4 game slide.

Big divisional game for you here against Buffalo. You catch a break with Spiller being out but they still look solid all the way around. Looking forward to seeing how it plays out!

East Rutherford, N.J. -- On a blustery fall Sunday afternoon the Jets overcame a 14 point second quarter deficit and held off a late Bills comeback to end their four game slide. Led by Geno Smith's career best 364 passing yards, New York handed Buffalo their second consecutive loss by a score of 41-34.

Buffalo started the game strong as they took the opening kickoff and ran the ball effectively against a usually stout Jets front seven. Following a 32 yard run by Fred Jackson and a 21 yard option run by E.J. Manuel, Jackson would score his first touchdown from one yard out to give the Bills an early lead.

Geno Smith struggled to adapt to strong winds in the first quarter. On their second possession Smith watched a pass intended for Eric Decker sail directly into the hands of Bills cornerback Stephon Gilmore. The Bills would convert the turnover into three points on a Dan Carpenter 47 yard field goal to extended the lead to 10.

After a Jets field goal, Fred Jackson would continue to make plays as he took a screen pass 53 yards down to the Jets two yard line. The play set up his second rushing touchdown and gave Buffalo what looked to be a commanding 17-3 lead.

The two teams would trade field goals, but on their last possession of the half, the Jets would get themselves back into the game. With just 1:17 remaining, Geno Smith completed five straight passes covering 80 yards. His final pass found rookie WR Shaq Evans who made a leaping grab for a touchdown which shrunk Buffalo's lead to 20-13 at halftime.

Geno Smith continued with his hot hand in the third quarter, with a little help from his receivers. New York took the second half kickoff and tied the game when Eric Decker scored on a defected pass intended for Jace Amaro in the end zone.

The Jets defense showed signs of life on the next series of plays as NT Damon Harrison recorded two consecutive sacks, forcing a 3 & out. Starting at the Bills 40 yard line, Geno Smith led another scoring drive, this time connecting with Jace Amaro for a 17 yard touchdown, Smith's third of the day.

New York forced another 3 & out on a Sheldon Richardson sack on Manuel and the Jets offense would continue to pour it on. A 34 yard completion to Jace Amaro got the Jets inside the Bills five yard line. On the play Amaro would fight off two defenders and come down with the ball in what's now become a routine play for the standout rookie. Chris Ivory would punch it in for his first score giving the Jets a 34-20 lead early in the forth quarter.

The 14 point lead was short lived as Marquise Goodwin returned the ensuing kickoff 91 yards for a touchdown. The score quieted Metlife Stadium as fans held their breath with the possibility of another fourth quarter collapse taking shape.

The concern of the fans was realized when the Jets were forced to punt and the Bills scored quickly on a seven yard pass from Manuel to Fred Jackson.

With the score now tied late in the 4th, the Jets offense stepped up and traveled 78 yard on 4 plays. The big play came on a 60 yard completion to Shaq Evans who broke free from a defender and was knocked out of bounds at the Bills 7 yard line. Chris Ivory gave the Jets the lead with just under two minutes remaining when he went untouched into the end zone.

It looked as though the Jets may have left too much time on the clock as the Bills moved the ball quickly all the way down to the Jets four. On 3rd down with no timeouts and ten seconds left, E.J. Manuel was tag teamed by Muhammad Wilkerson and Sheldon Richardson for a game ending sack.

After the game a relieved Rex Ryan said of the win, "It wasn't pretty, but we'll take it. There's still a lot to improve on, especially on defense, but we preached finishing all week and we did just that."

Ryan also added, "Our offense was tremendous today. Young guys like Geno, Jace, and Shaq really showed us what they're capable of."

One of the changes this week was giving rookie Shaq Evans an expanded role over veteran David Nelson, and with 120 yards on 5 catches, the receiver out of UCLA didn't disappoint. Ryan said of the change, "Every time we give him an opportunity he makes plays and he did it again today, expect to see more of him."

Big win for you in the division and a game I really felt you needed. What day from Shaq Evans. I will be interested to see how you work him into the offense more moving forward. Good luck in the next one!
