        Jets Gameday Preview: Week 15

We're back home at the Met for a little Saturday Night Football. With 3 games to go, every play is crucial for the Jets, who still sit on the outside of the playoffs looking in.

The Jets are starting to get a little frustrated. They're sitting just below the Titans, who are holding their own, and doing their job: winning. Meanwhile, the Jets are playing their best football of the season here in December, with nothing to show for it. They got a little boost last week when the Chargers lost to Carolina and fell into a tie with Tennessee for the two wild card spots in the AFC. I guess the one positive you can take out of this is that Tennessee and San Diego both have a tie on their records, to each other, so the Jets just need a win and a loss by either one of them to move into the playoff picture, instead of worrying about potential tiebreakers. Regardless, the most important thing is to take care of business on the field. The Jets have 3 games left, all against AFC East rivals. The two home games in this stretch, against Miami tonight and Buffalo on New Year's Day, will likely be wanting to play spoiler, and as we know well, the Bills succeeded in the spoiler role against the Jets last season.

The last time we saw Miami, early last month, we escaped with a 19-17 win that featured 9 points scored by the Jets defense, and a thorough offensive struggle. The Jets couldn't stop Jay Ajayi, an Ryan Tannehill had a productive day throwing the pigskin. A safety from Marcus Gilchrist in the second quarter was the difference in the game. But, that was before Geno Smith and this offense started to go nuts. The Jets are averaging 50.5 PPG in December. Geno Smith is 39-57 for 683 yards, with 10 total TD (9 pass, 1 rush), and 0 INTs. Todd Gurley just ran for over 200 yards against San Francisco last week. Some might say the Jets offense has been unstoppable recently, while the defense has shown a little bit of a weakness in the run game. But, let's not worry about that until Patriots week.

The biggest difference in this meeting with the Dolphins is personnel. On offense, both Ryan Tannehill and Jay Ajayi are out with injuries, so Matt Moore gets the start under center, while Damien Williams and Daniel Thomas share the touches in the backfield. But you gotta figure that this won't be a walk in the park, because the Dolphins still have their regular weapons out wide. Yep, Jarvis Landry, DeVante Parker, Jordan Cameron, and the quick Kenny Stills are still good to go, and have never been better. They know that they're playing for pride, and they would love nothing more than to dampen the playoff hopes of their longest division rival.

Defensively, this Miami squad is also a little beaten up. The field general, Kiko Alonso, is done for the year, so the defensive playcalls will be sent into Jelani Jenkins. The Dolphins still have their fierce pass rushers, in Cameron Wake, Ndamukong Suh, and Mario Williams. Jameel McClain is filling in for Alonso, and is surrounded by the aforementioned Jenkins, as well as Koa Misi. Meanwhile, in the secondary, Byron Maxwell likes to talk, and likes to give Brandon Marshall a hard time. But, Marshall is coming off his best game of the season, so we'll see who gets the last laugh in this one.

Gameday Recap: Jets 21, Dolphins 14
Jets take a huge step back, but still find a way to win

Matt Forte carries four Miami defenders with him for what was the game winning touchdown. On a day when Todd Gurley went down with injury, Forte stepped up to bail out Geno Smith, who came back down to earth after outstanding performances in the last few games.

I'm not going to talk about this one very long. Not all of the turnovers were Geno's fault, but that doesn't mean Miami didn't get the football. The Jets played with fire by playing with a deficit in a very crucial nationally televised game, that is so important to their playoff hopes, sitting on the outside looking in with a trip to Foxboro looming on Christmas Eve next week. Gurley went down with a shoulder injury in the first quarter after taking a huge hit from Isa Abdul-Quddus, but he'll be fine for the Patriots game. A win's a win, but the Jets need to step it up if they want to get into the playoffs. Even if Tennessee and San Diego lose this week, the Jets can't take the foot off the gas, with New England ad Buffalo still on the schedule.

The one thing that was promising? The Jets defense got stops and forced turnovers when they had to, a trait essential to being a playoff caliber defense. So at least we got that going for us.

One of Geno's cheesier interceptions of the season: The ball was batted down by Xavien Howard, and then scooped up by Jameel McClain just before hitting the ground. Right place at the right time, I guess.

Matt Moore's view after his only TD of the day, a strike to Jordan Cameron in the back of the end zone just before halftime that put Miami up 14-7.

Calvin Pryor III alertly strips the ball away from DeVante Parker at the 1 yard line, setting up Buster Skrine's recovery, and the Jets drive that tied the game at 14 late in the third.

Re: Flying Through the Big Apple - RoundingThird's New York Jets (M17)

What the Jets want for Christmas

December 20, 2016 --- It's the holiday season, which is supposed to bring happiness and love. But, if you're the New York Jets, this holiday season is only making you tense; more motivated and focused than ever before. You see, we were in this position last year: In the thick of the AFC Wild Card race, with a Week 16 matchup with the Patriots looming, and then a Week 17 date with the Bills. The one difference, is that this week last year, going into Patriots' week, the Jets didn't control their own destiny. The 2016 Jets do. Two wins in the last two games is guaranteed to get them in. But the pressure's on, since there are four teams still hoping, praying that the Jets slip up, including the Steelers, who got the last wild card spot over the Jets last year, and the Bills, who knocked the Jets out of the playoffs, allowing Pittsburgh to sneak in. With the Chargers and Titans having tied each other, it looks like this race won't come down to tiebreakers; the Jets (and everyone else) will either be a half game, or more, ahead, or a half game, or more, behind after 16 games have been played.

The rest of the AFC is looking at the schedule this week and seeing the opportunity for the Jets to do what they've repeatedly done in the past: blow it all. They see a game scheduled for 1:00 PM EST in Foxborough, Massachusetts, between the 12-2 Patriots, who have already clinched the AFC East and will likely the AFC's #1 seed yet again, and the 9-5 Jets, with a quarterback in Geno Smith coming off a 5 turnover day against 4-10 Miami. Those 4 teams in the hunt, Tennessee, Pittsburgh, Oakland, Buffalo, as well as San Diego (currently holding #6 seed) are salivating at the site of this one, knowing that their playoff hopes will stay alive, or shine even brighter. A Jets loss almost certainly means that they will need help in Week 17 to get in, with San Diego playing in Cleveland. Tennessee might have to play the AFC South leading Jaguars on the road, but we can't just rely on the fact that the Titans will lose, since they can win the AFC South with 2 wins and 2 Jags losses.

So, that brings us to the Jets' Christmas wishes: A win in Foxboro. They haven't won a game in Foxboro this important since the 2010 AFC Divisional Playoff, and with all of the emotion in this game, and the injuries to the Jets offense, they'll have to earn it. We shouldn't have to remind you about that trade, but Eric Decker and Sheldon Richardson will be welcoming their old teammates into Gillette Stadium this week, wanting to dispose of them like 99% of the other teams that come into Foxboro. The Jets' recipient in that trade, Rob Gronkowski is hurt, but will still be hit with a great deal of nostalgia as he walks onto the field. Todd Gurley, the Jets' bellcow, is banged up, but will be up for this game. If the Jets could just win this game, everything else they have left to do to get into the playoffs would seem so easy. Just do it for Brandon Marshall. The poor guy doesn't know what playoff football tastes like.

                  Jets Gameday Preview: Week 16

Don't be alarmed; it's just Gillette. The odds might never be in your favor.

I think we've talked enough about how important this game is, so before going over the Patriots roster, I'll steal a line from the team on the other side of the field. #DoYourJob. That's all we need.

Tom Brady's theme song might as well be The Greatest, by Sia. The chorus is even more fitting. "I'm free to be the greatest, I'm alive. I'm free to be the greatest here tonight, the greatest, the greatest, the greatest alive. The greatest, the greatest alive." The man is the GOAT, without a question. I've always respected the hell out of the guy, even as a die hard fan of his arch-rival. But, back on November 27 in East Rutherford, he was held under 200 passing yards by the Jets #2 ranked pass defense. They'll need that same kind of effort again today if they want any chance to get the W. But, TB12 could also just hand it off to his right hand man for some Blount Force Trauma. If he takes the former route, however, he'll have a plethora of wide outs to choose from. If he wants speed, he'll hit Danny Amendola or Julian Edelman. If he wants strength, he'll find Martellus Bennett or Eric Decker. As expected, these guys are clicking on all cylinders. There's a reason they're 12-2.

There's another familiar face on this defense. Sheldon Richardson is stationed on the right end, opposite Jabaal Sheard, and adjacent to Terrance Knighton and Alan Branch, to form a very scary front four. But, as per usual with the Patriots, the fun doesn't stop there, because you move to the linebackers, and find Jamie Collins, Dont'a Hightower, and Rob Ninkovich. Finally, patrolling the remainder of the field are Logan Ryan. who's been near the top of the league in INTs all year, and had two in the first game against the Jets, and Super Bowl XLIX hero Malcolm Butler. But we'd be stupid to forget about the safeties: Devin McCourty and Patrick Chung.

So, a top notch unit that is already pretty lethal is matched with an incredible 12th man (yeah, Seattle, that's right), and a really obnoxious 3rd down fog horn. And, at this time of year, everything seems louder. The cold must have some effect. If you think that because it's Christmas Eve, they'll be easier on the Jets, you're wrong. Sports doesn't have a season of giving.

Gameday Recap: Patriots 26, Jets 21
After a defensive performance for the ages, it's the 7th turnover that costs the Jets

Malcolm Butler has a knack for making clutch interceptions at or near the end zone. He seals this game on a similar play as the one in Super Bowl XLIX.

It was so weird at the time, but it turned out to be an omen. Jamie Collins’ pick six on the first offensive drive told the Jets all that they needed to know. He reached with one hand still being held down by the block of Ryan Clady, and stepped in front of Todd Gurley on a screen pass, and then hustled hard the rest of the way to make it 10-0. What followed on the next 3 Jets’ possessions were three more picks, two of which occurred in the red zone or end zone. So the first four drives ended in picks, and Logan Ryan’s pick six made it 20-0 halfway through the second. The Jets scrambled to get on the board before halftime, when Geno found Jace Amaro on what was actually pretty beautiful pass. And when Devin Smith pushed his way into the end zone on the first possession of the second half, the Jets were only down six.

Jamie Collins comes up with this absurd interception...

And breaks free from the Jets O-Linemen, who certainly aren't being mistaken for track stars.

What was keeping the Jets in the game? Defense. Tom Brady finished with 133 yards passing, low for anybody’s standards, especially his. The Jets got pressure on him as well, something that is hard to, considering that Brady gets rid of the ball so quickly. The Jets also stuffed LeGarrette Blount for the majority of the afternoon, and kept the New England Patriots, the league’s best offense over the course of the last 15 years, under 200 yards. That is hard to do. They also didn’t allow an offensive touchdown, and haven’t in either of their two meetings this season, but for all we know, there could be one more meeting in January.

Picking it up right after the Devin Smith touchdown, the Jets defense forced a Ryan Allen punt, and Jeremy Ross made the critical mistake of letting it bounce inside the 10. Downed at the 3, the Jets were faced with a long road if they wanted to get back in it. On 2nd and 10, Geno handed it off to Gurley, who fumbled after taking a huge hit from Jamie Collins. Sheldon Richardson and Cyrus Jones both had a golden opportunity to scoop and score, but they got too careless, and Geno came out of nowhere, putting his body on the line to recover and save the day, for the moment. On the very next play, 3rd and long, he tried to find Devin Smith on a streak, but found Logan Ryan instead, for the 3rd time that day. Coach Bowles wasn’t that upset, because it was either that, or take a safety, and go down two scores and give the ball back. With a short field, the Jets’ defense held, and Gostkowski made it 23-14. After another pick, number six on the day, and Gostkowski’s fourth field goal the Jets were down 26-14 early in the 4th.

Logan Ryan's pick six in the second. We would show you the third interception, the one described above, but it really wasn't that interesting.

Desperate to make something happen, the Jets didn’t give up, and knew that they still had a shot. Watching the scoreboard, they noticed that the Jaguars had tied the game up at 21 against Tennessee after falling behind 21-7 early in the third. Watching the field, they saw a marginal hole in the Pats’ coverage, but a big enough hole to work with. But, the drive fizzled out in the outskirts field goal range, and on 4th and 10, Geno couldn’t find anyone open, and tried to scramble for the first down, a thing he had done successfully all day. But this time, he was met three yards short by a medley of Patriots, enough force to knock the ball loose. After a 10 second rugby scrum, it was Geno who recovered, but it was the Patriots ball on downs anyway. The Jets stuffed Blount on first down, then Brady threw it away (towards Revis) twice, and New England had to punt. The Jets got it going this time, moving the ball quickly downfield, getting a clutch third down conversion in the red zone before Geno found Zach Sudfeld from 8 yards out with under 6 minutes left.

Zach Sudfeld keeps the Jets' hopes alive, making it a one score game with plenty of time left in the 4th.

If you could believe it, the Jets got another quick stop, and Jeremy Ross returned the punt to midfield, and the Jets, down 26-21, were feeling really good about themselves. They got a couple of first downs on a couple of passes to Quincy Enunwa, causing Geno to call his favorite play, a play action bootleg for Amaro. But Amaro wasn’t open at first, so Geno had to scramble. Once he did, Amaro was open, and he threw it on the run, leading Amaro enough so that he would score if he caught it. But, he just overthrew him, and that play would loom large. The Jets would get inside the five, but weren’t able to get the ball in the end zone, and turned it over on downs with about 90 seconds to play.

The Patriots took over at the three, but the Jets still had three timeouts, and brought the house, hoping for a safety that would cut the lead to three, and give them the ball back. On the first play of the drive, Blount took it right up the middle to about the 8 yard line, when David Harris came in hot. FUMBLE!!!!! DAVID HARRIS KNOCKED THE BALL LOOSE, AND ERIN HENDERSON FELL ON IT AT THE FIVE!!!!! The Jets had just over a minute, with three time outs, and were five yards away from overcoming six Geno Smith interceptions to shock everybody in New England. First down: Hand off to Gurley. Stuffed. Second down: Incomplete pass, looking for Marshall in the end zone. Third down: A deafening dose of fog horn, crowd going berserk, Geno comes to the line calling an audible for B-Marsh. He calls for the ball from Nick Mangold, does a quick three step drop, has Marshall on a slant, but as soon as he releases it, Malcolm Butler jumps the route, just as he did in the Super Bowl, and yanks it away from Marshall. So to answer the question of how many interceptions it takes to lose a game to the Patriots, it’s seven. For many teams in the league it would be one or two, but the Jets defense played so good, that they kept themselves in the game, but finally on the seventh try, the Patriots were able to seal the deal.

One can now only hope that the Jaguars beat the Titans. When we last left it, the game was tied 21-21 with 10 minutes left in the fourth quarter. If the Jags win, the Jets still control their own destiny, and clinch a playoff spot with a win next week against the Bills. If the Titans win that game, then the Jets will need a win against the Bills AND either the Titans to lose to the Texans at home, OR the Chargers to lose to the Chiefs, which actually seems realistic, but you never know in today’s NFL.

7 INTERCEPTIONS??? I'm surprised you didn't bench Geno in disgust lol.

Finally caught up with this, great work! I feel like once you get a competent QB in here to run the offense this team will be REALLY good, like 16-0 good especially if your defense plays like it does against the Patriots every game. Until then, you may make the playoffs, but I don't think you'll get that far this year at least.

                        Thanks for catching up!

I think Geno could be the QB I need. His OVR isn't very high, so if I can get him up to 80 or so, we have a decent team around him. I see a more glaring need for a wide out, and I don't want to spoil anything, but Mo Wilkerson rejected my initial offer and is going to be a free agent. I like where we're headed. I don't think I'll even draft a QB. I can survive with Geno as long as the defense maintains itself next season.

I'm not convinced that we can't make a playoff run this season, so watch out.

                              Jets Gameday Preview: Week 17

The regular season's final game finds the Jets at MetLife, but in a position they know all too well from last year.

It's week 17. A Jets win, and they're in. Can't be too hard, right? Well, that's what we said last year, when a 10-5 Jets team headed into the Ralph, in Orchard Park, NY to face a 7-8 Buffalo Bills team that had just been eliminated from the playoffs, but were determined to keep the Jets out as well. Of course, Bills coach Rex Ryan had a lot to do with that, wanting to beat the team that had fired him approximately 363 days before. And, that's exactly what they did.

Today, the 9-6 Jets return home after a near win against the Patriots despite 7 interceptions from Geno Smith to face a 7-8 Bills team that has just been eliminated from the playoffs, after their home loss last week to Miami. Just like last year, the Jets are holding onto the AFC's last wild card spot, with 3 teams hoping, praying, that they lose so that they can swoop into the postseason instead. Can the Jets prove that they are completely past everything that happened last year? Will they get a win and get in for the sake of Brandon Marshall, a man much too respected by the rest of the league to not have any playoff experience under his belt? Or will Rex Ryan lead the Bills to their 5th straight win against the Jets, and ruin their playoff hopes for a second straight year, but this time in their own building? Tune into CBS at 1:00 to find out.

Gameday Recap: Bills 43, Jets 38
Geno's turnovers costs Jets once again

Rookie Reggie Ragland picks up the pigskin and ices the game for the Bills, while Geno Smith lies helplessly on the ground behind him.

The start couldn’t have been better. The crowd was great, and their energy guided Jordan Jenkins to a sack, strip, and scoop of Tyrod Taylor on the game’s first possession. With the ball inside the Buffalo 20, Geno made quick work of things, finding Marshall from 4 yards out. A quick defensive lapse allowed Shady McCoy to take it 75 yards on the very first play out of the kickoff, but the Jets defense bounced back. Later in the 1st, after a Jets punt, it was Jenkins again forcing a fumble, this time on McCoy’s record, with Erin Henderson there to scoop it up. A couple plays later, Geno rolled out, and waited for Devin Smith to get open, then found him over the middle for a 5 yard touchdown. Sadly, that was the high point of the day for the offense.

The offensive line would quickly start to break down after that, with holding penalties that nullified third down conversions, false starts, and then blown coverage that would last for the rest of the day, allowing a touch Buffalo defensive line to get to Geno Smith. Sacks weren’t the only result. When Geno had time to throw, he was rushed into throwing interceptions. When he had somebody open, the pressure would get to him as he threw it, leading to huge incompletions. And then there were the plays in which the Jets’ line would just get beat, and Geno would go down, sometimes holding onto the ball, sometimes not. It just happened that both times Geno did cough it up, were the two worst possible times for that to happen. The first was on the other side of the two minute warning, just after a Dan Carpenter field goal that cut the Jets lead to 14-10, when the ball went straight up into the air after Geno let go, and fell right into Jerry Hughes’ lap, and turned into the easiest touchdown he might ever have.

Met with the hit from Sterling Moore, Geno quickly relinquished his right to the football, while Jerry Hughes capitalized on the occasion.

It was 17-14 Bills after that, and then the floodgates opened. Geno threw a pick on that next drive, trying to force the Jets into scoring range before halftime, and after a couple big plays put the Bills inside the 5, Dee Milliner made a diving interception in the end zone to save the day, for now. The Jets got their act together to get a game-tying field goal before halftime, and went into the locker room knotted up at 17.

Todd Gurley, after being contained for most of the first half, led the first drive out of the break, chugging along for 40 yards on 6 carries, as the Jets tried to take the ball out of Geno’s hand, not because they thought he was a trainwreck, but because they were scared for his health. At least 2 Bills pass rushers had been getting into the backfield on every play since the first quarter, so the Jets decided to rely on Gurley for a little while, and he came through with a pretty looking touchdown run to cap a 7 minute drive to start the second half, and make it 24-17 Jets.

We have to give Tyrod Taylor a ton of credit, though. The Jets were getting plenty of pressure of their own, and basically shut down LeSean McCoy after his long TD in the first. But, Taylor kept making big plays, especially on 3rd down. On one particular third down on the ensuing drive from the outskirts of the red zone, he fired a back shoulder strike to Sammy Watkins in the end zone, a perfect pass because of how it crossed up Buster Skrine, making it impossible for him to defend it. A couple minutes later, after a Geno interception, Taylor found backup HB Chris Polk underneath, and after eluding the grasp of Darrelle Revis, put the Bills ahead 31-24, a lead they would not relinquish.

Sammy Watkins elevates to tie the score at 24 in the third quarter, on what was Tyrod Taylor's best pass of the day by far.

If you thought the Jets were done turning the ball over, you were way off. That stupid pressure kept rearing its ugly head, and Geno rushed another pick, his 4th, and it took a goal line stand by the Jets defense to force a field goal that made it a 10 point game. Responding with a no huddle offense, Geno got it together, and after a long completion to Todd Gurley, he fed it to his running back from 1 yard out to get the Jets back within three, at 34-31, with 4 minutes to play. The Jets felt good too, because they were confident that they could stop the Buffalo rushing attack, which they had since the second drive of the game. But they didn’t expect Tyrod Taylor to come out throwing; and when he did, they didn’t have an answer. Luckily, what they did have were their three timeouts, and they managed to get another stop at the goal line with just over a minute left, and got the ball back, down 37-31, shortly thereafter. However, the Ryan Bros. defense got home one last time. Shaq Lawson was credit with the sack and strip, while Reggie Ragland got out of his block as soon as he saw the ball free, then proceeded to scoop it up and showboat his way into the end zone, taking the life out of the Jets and their fans, and giving Rex Ryan some kind of satisfaction, knocking his former team out of the playoffs for the second year in a row.

The Jets didn’t quit, and Geno found Marshall for a beautiful TD as time expired, and were met with a standing O from the crowd for their efforts this season. Of course, by now, I’ve made it incredibly obvious that the Jets will not make the postseason, but I won’t tell you who, out of the three chasing teams (Tennessee, Baltimore, Oakland) did. I want to keep some kind of suspense alive.

Fighting back tears or dismay, after missing the playoffs once again in what has been an incredible career, Brandon Marshall makes a fine catch over Ronald Darby to give Jets fans a little bit of hope for 2017. As long as he's here, we're good.
