Chargers Setup Camp in Fullerton | May 12, 2017
The Los Angeles Chargers and Cal. State Fullerton University have agreed to a two year deal that will bring the Chargers’ training camp to Fullerton. The University will house the team’s training camp for the next two seasons and the Chargers will pay $5 million for the use of facilities in that time.
Located just 35 miles from the L.A. Memorial Coliseum, Fullerton no longer has its own football program to support. Football was discontinued in 1992, leaving Titan Stadium used as a multisport facility for men’s soccer and lacrosse. Now, Titan Stadium will be the main training camp field.
The Chargers praised Fullerton’s Sports Complex and student housing. The University will also have a private server that will be dedicated to the Chargers. The hospitality and amenities were the main draw, along with the easy location for the franchise.
In the franchise’s relocation to Los Angeles, it also meant a new home for training camp. The team had practiced in San Diego, just outside Qualcomm Stadium. When the lease was not renewed, it also meant they had lost their team headquarters and training camp location.
“We were looking for a spot that could also house our team offices over the next few seasons. So this will be our team location until 2019.” explained President Dean Spanos. “We are currently exploring options for our permanent training camp and team facility.”
It’s likely the team will use some of the office space being built along with the construction of City of Champions Stadium. Although the Chargers have expressed some interest to separate their franchise from the Rams and might explore alternatives. One of those could be in Chavez Ravine, where Dodgers’ ownership is reportedly interested in allowing an NFL team to build.
The Chargers don’t want to waste time, after opening minicamp at a local high school. They are expected to announce their plans for a permanent facility before the next offseason. For now, Fullerton is home to the Los Angeles Chargers.Comment

Chargers: Top Five Training Camp Battles | July 24, 2017
The Chargers are set to open their first season in Los Angeles this Friday. That's when the team's rookies will report to training camp. It marks the team's return to L.A., the place where the franchise was started in 1961.
Heading into the new season, the team is looking to improve off a 5-11 season. It was another year marred by injuries that led to a major reconstruction of the entire franchise. A new President of Football Operations, General Manager, Head Coach and many new faces on the roster.
All of the changes have led to many questions heading into the start of training camp. New Head Coach Harold Goodwin said that every position, except Quarterback, will be an open battle for starter. So we have decided to highlight the biggest training camp battles, day before camp opens in Fullerton.
5. Free Safety | Incumbent: Dwight Lowery | Challenger: Brandon Flowers | Dark Horse: Terrence Brooks
One of the major changes this offseason is the switch to the 4-3 defense. Defensive Coordinator Leslie Frazier and Assistant Head Coach Mike Singletary are expected to focus on more zone coverage, fewer linebacker blitzes and more work for the team safeties. Returning starter Dwight Lowery struggled in zone coverage and might be better fit for the nickel corner position. That spot is currently owned by Brandon Flowers, who has had two great seasons for the Chargers. Both players figure to get playing time at either spot, but Flowers is the clubhouse leader at FS. Watch out for Terrence Brooks, recently brought in from Philadelphia. He worked under Leslie Frazier in Baltimore, but couldn't make a crowded roster. He moved onto Philadelphia, played sparingly on defense and was waived. After a standout performance in minicamp, he is one of the best athletes on the defense and could see reps at Free Safety.
4. Weakside Linebacker | Incumbent: Kyle Emanuel | Challenger: Chad Greenway | Dark Horse: Marquel Lee
Chad Greenway was signed to a one year deal in the offseason. That move could be as a stop-gap as Kyle Emanuel continues to learn the defense. Greenway has a leg-up, playing for Frazier & Singletary in Minnesota for four seasons. Emanuel, mixed in last year behind Melvin Ingram. A tough player from North Dakota State, he has the prototypical build of a WILL linebacker. Entering his third season, Emanuel must improve in pass coverage and playing in space. Rookie Marquel Lee was a late pick but was highly productive at Wake Forest. He is on the roster bubble, but has impressed coaches thus far.
3. Strong Safety | Incumbent: Jahleel Addae | Challenger: Shamarko Thomas | Dark Horse: Donnie Miles
Similar to the other safety spot, strong safety is all about how players can adapt to a new system. All three players at the strong safety spot are some of the hardest hitting players in the secondary. Jahleel Addae has battled injuries, due in part to his aggression on the field. Thomas is hoping a new start will mean finally starting and living up to his potential. Donnie Miles was picked in the 6th Round, projected to go as high as the 4th Round. The coaches like his instincts, but he will struggle to crack a secondary loaded with experienced players. It seems to be Addae's to lose, but don't count out Shamarko with something to prove.
2. 3rd Receiver | Incumbent: Tyrell Williams | Challenger: Dontrelle Inman | Dark Horse: Travin Dural
The injuries at receiver last year meant both Williams and Inman played more snaps last year than expected. Williams was the standout, taking over some of the lost production of Keenan Allen and Travis Benjamin. Still, he dropped too many passes and was more comfortable as a slot receiver. That makes him the favorite for the reps at the slot position. The new staff sees rookie Travin Dural as an outside receiver, so this battle will come down to Inman and Williams. The loser might also get cut, with the Chargers looking to keep "4 or 5" receivers, a direct quote from General Manager Vince Newsome.
1. Left Tackle | Incumbent: King Dunlap | Challenger: Cam Robinson
In 2014, King Dunlap earned the nod at left tackle for the Chargers. He hasn't surrendered the spot since then. Dunlap signed a four year contract before the start of the 2015 season. Since then, his playing time has been shortened by injuries, issues with migraines, and troubles in pass protection. It led the Chargers to draft Cam Robinson as their first round pick. Chargers Lose On Last Drive in Goodwin & L.A. Debut

Game Report: The Chargers were welcomed by a crowd of 86,500 at the Memorial Coliseum for their debut in Los Angeles. A smaller crowd compared to the Ram's debut, but still a stellar number for a preseason game. New Head Coach Harold Goodwin got comfortable right away, leading the team on a long opening drive. It ended in a short field goal by Josh Lambo (1/2, missing from 44). It was also the debut of new Colts' Head Coach Sean McDermott. The former Panthers DC saw his offense rolling early; Andrew Luck hit Phillip Dorsett on a 73 yard touchdown pass.
The passing game was less effective for the Chargers, seeing both Philip Rivers and Geno Smith throwing interceptions. They both also did not have a passing touchdown in the game. The Chargers' offense was quiet in the first half, but scored right before half on a short run by Andre Williams. The Chargers trailed 13-10 going into halftime.
In the second half, Matt Cassel was picked off again (interception in the second quarter by Casey Hayward), this time by Denzel Perryman (7 total tackles, 1 sack, 1 INT). On the following drive, Taysom Hill checked in for his first snaps in the NFL. He hit Marcus Murphy from 11 yards out and the Chargers had a 20-13 lead going into the 4th.
The final quarter saw Matt Cassel find Chase Coffman for a touchdown and the following two point conversion. On both plays, linebackers were lost in zone coverage. The fourth quarter also saw solid play from Taysom Hill who ended the game 15/20, 182 yards, 1 TD, and 1 fumble. The fumble would prove costly late in the quarter. The Colts would run out the clock and spoil the Los Angeles debut for the Chargers.

Goodwin No Match for Arians, Cards Beat Bolts

Game Report: The second preseason game was billed as the master, Bruce Arians, versus the apprentice, Harold Goodwin. After the first quarter, in which the Chargers starters played the entirety, Goodwin's team held the edge 7-3. What followed was a dominant performance by the Cardinals, specifically on the ground and stopping the Chargers run game. Chandler Catanzaro was by far the player of the night: Going 3/3 on Field Goals and making two from over 50 yards. He also was perfect on extra points (3/3).
The Chargers were held to 58 rushing yards, with Melvin Gordon having more carries (6) than yards (5). His slow start in preseason could be alarming. His backups have faired better, especially Andre Williams who added another touchdown against the Cardinals. Also, Branden Oliver is expected back for the third preseason game.
Rookies made strong impressions for the Chargers. Travin Dural caught 4 passes (all from Taysom Hill) for 98 yards and a late touchdown. Khalfani Muhammad had a 52 yard kick return, and Donnie Miles added 3 solo tackles on special teams.
The Cardinals were offensively led by Jaron Brown and his three touchdowns. He scored on two short passes and a jet sweep play that the Chargers could not contain. Quarterback play was not as strong, minus the two short passing touchdowns from Zac Dysert.
Overall, the Chargers defense struggled up front, showing a lack of depth behind likely starters in Melvin Ingram, Joey Bosa, and Corey Liuget. Vikings Win Amidst QB Battle & Injuries

Game Report: The Vikings looked sharp in the season's "dress rehearsal." Their main storyline this offseason was the return of Teddy Bridgewater and the ensuing battle for starting Quarterback. Bridgewater started the game, leading the team on an opening touchdown drive. Later drives would stall and Bridgewater also had issues with the cadence and pressure from the Chargers' pass rush.
Sam Bradford, who kept the Vikings competitive last year among multiple injuries, was sharp in this game. He played into the third quarter: 12/17, 109 yards, and one touchdown pass to LaQuon Treadwell.
The Chargers entered the game with a clear Quarterback hierarchy. Then, Everson Griffin hit Philip Rivers in the back late in the first quarter. Rivers ruptured a disk and will miss 6 to 8 weeks. In his absence, Geno Smith is now the starting Quarterback.
The injury is devastating for the Chargers, who were becoming a trendy playoff pick. Missing the first half of the season, it also means Taysom Hill will open as the team's backup. Both Hill and Smith combined to go 28/37, 284 yards, 1 touchdown and a lone interception coming from Geno.
The game was competitive because of each team's stellar defense. Both teams brought pressure and made for a low scoring affair. The Chargers struggled to run the ball, while the Vikings were more successful. Brandon Mebane was a bright spot in stopping the run (9 tackles, one for loss).
It seemed the linebackers for the Chargers were struggling. Bradford, Bridgewater, and Joel Stave were successful in finding routes to the middle of the field and the team's tight ends. The Chargers linebackers must improve against short field passes and in stopping the run. The team clearly has a pass rush to be dangerous.
The game came down to late game management, with Minnesota getting a chance to run out the clock. A missed early field goal by Josh Lambo would prove to be costly. It could also cost his job, as Andy Phillips stayed perfect in the preseason (3/3 on Field Goals, 3/3 on XP).
A tough loss for the Chargers, who were sent reeling with multiple injuries. The Rivers injury is critical, but the loss of Caraun Reid for 5 weeks was also costly from this game. I'm gonna pray that Madden doesn't have you playing preseason games in mid-September LOL!
I do like the roster you've built, though, and Goodwin IMO is a guy I could really see getting a HC job next year. Huge fan of Rivers so hoping he can cut down on the picks from last year and lead you back to playoffs. If not..send him the Jets' way. Good catch! That should definitely say August, not September! I made that change.
I agree, Goodwin will definitely be on everyone's shortlist this year. I thought about Kevin Sumlin as well, I always saw him one day jumping to the NFL. Starting the year without Rivers really hurts, but I'm hoping we aren't terrible without him. Then when he returns, maybe we can make a playoff run.

Chargers Win Big to Closeout Preseason

Game Report: The final preseason game is usually a showcase for players fighting for a roster spot. For the Chargers, it was a showcase for two Quarterbacks that did not expect to be in this position. First is Geno Smith, signed as a backup and now forced into starting. Then, it's Taysom Hill. Hill went undrafted and will now be the team's backup QB to start the season.
In terms of those battles, some of those battles were probably decided in this game. The 49ers haven't announced a starting Quarterback, but Blaine Gabbert looked strong in just two scoreless drives for the 49ers. Rookie DeShone Kizer was drafted early, but Head Coach Chip Kelly says they are ready to be patient this season. In this game, Kizer played the majority and struggled to score against Los Angeles.
The major highlights for the Chargers were clearly running back/returner Marcus Murphy and rookie safety Donnie Miles. Murphy scored two touchdowns and had a 23 yard punt return to put the team over midfield. Murphy had 134 all-purpose yards and likely beat out Khalfani Muhammad for the runner/returner role.
Donnie Miles and many young players on the Chargers' defense shined. Miles had 7 tackles, one forced fumble and almost intercepted a late throw by Kizer. The Chargers defense allowed 268 yards, but only 77 rushing yards. Not considered a strength, they contained the 49ers rushing game.
Harold Goodwin and the Chargers end the preseason at 2-2. They now enter the regular season without Philip Rivers but they're crediting the defense and running game being "ready" to lead the way.Last edited by Maize08; 11-06-2016, 10:05 AM.Comment

Chargers Roster News and Notes
The Los Angeles Chargers recently finished the preseason and made their final roster cuts down to the magic number: 53. Among the final cuts were some surprises. Including kicker Josh Lambo, who lost his spot to rookie Andy Phillips. Phillips, 28, was a perfect 4-for-4 on field goals, including a 43 yard make in the final preseason game. He also was 6/6 on extra points and will become the oldest rookie in the NFL since punter Savio Rocca, then 33, played for the Eagles.
The team also parted ways with four players that were eligible for the practice squad, but were not included on the team's official list of practice squad players. Those players were receive Vince Mayle, guard/tackle Chris Watt, and safety Darrell Stuckey.
It's reported the team's final roster cut was cornerback Pierre Desir, out of Lindenwood College. Desir, more than a small school product, made last year's roster. He was beat out by recent signee, Sterling Moore.
New President Terry McDonough and General Manager Vince Newsome clearly made their impact on the roster. The Chargers 53 man roster will feature 17 new players, including 6 rookies.
Chargers Sign Two from Saints
Linebacker Todd Davis and receiver Keevan Lucas had played this offseason for the New Orleans Saints. Davis, originally from California, had played his college football at Sacramento State. He was signed originally by the Saints in 2014, then played the last two seasons with the Broncos. Always on the roster bubble, he returned this offseason only to be one of the team's final cuts.
He was signed by the Chargers and placed on the active roster. He will serve as a reserve middle linebacker. Davis will wear #57 with the Chargers.
As for Lucas, he was an undrafted wide receiver from Tulsa. He decided to sign close-to-home, with the Saints. The Saints were loaded at receiver, but promised Lucas a practice squad position. Instead, once he was released, he signed to the Chargers practice squad.
Lucas (5'10" 195), was highly productive as a senior after missing part of his junior season in Tulsa. He is a slot receiver with great hands, that was limited by his size and top-end speed. Still, he caught 101 passes as a sophomore and 87 more as a senior.
Three Draft Picks Land on Practice Squad
What comes as a surprise to many was that the Chargers placed three rookies on their practice squad. The team's final three picks were all placed on the practice squad. Safety Donnie Miles was the most surprising, after compiling 16 tackles in the preseason. A potential special teams player as well, he was surpassed by the team's decision to keep a fifth cornerback.
Running back Khalfani Muhammad, a return specialist, never showed his track speed or big play ability. Thus, he was shelved in favor of Marcus Murphy. Murphy, a Missouri product, scored three touchdowns and averaged 25.3 yards on kick returns in the preseason.
The team's last pick was Marquel Lee. A team captain and leading tackler for Wake Forest, Lee saw his draft stock falter after a rough combine and pro day. While he lacks the measureables, Lee has great instincts and is still learning the weakside linebacker spot for the Chargers.
