      Recruiting Requests

      From: Coach Porell
      To: Scouting/Recruiting Department, Coach Taggart

As we have discussed it is my intention to run a pro-style balanced offense much like the one Coach Taggart ran at Western Kentucky. As such I have included some information outlining which type of player we should covet at each position. Please see below.

      -Quarterbacks

Our quarterbacks should be players that are considered "pro-style" quarterbacks whose primary talent is to thrown the ball down the field. Players with some athleticism are a plus. Quarterback is the single most important position on our offense.

      -Halfbacks

We would like a mix of players here. Some who can bang inside and others with the speed to get around the outside would be nice. Players who combine these traits would be ideal, though there are few that will likely be available to us. Halfback is a position of medium importance to us.

      -Fullbacks/Tight Ends

We would like to have fullbacks and tight ends who fit the typical molds of these positions, however we would like to see good receiving skills at both positions as they will be used frequently in the passing game. Fullback and tight end are positions of medium importance to us.

      -Wide Receivers

We would like balanced receivers. We want players who can make catches and make plays after the catch. We want a fair amount of speed at the position but should not covet track stars who can not catch the ball. Wide receiver is another position that is of medium importance to us in recruiting.

      -Offensive Linesmen

We will be asking our offensive linesmen to do it all. Pass blocking, straight ahead run blocking and pulling should all be in their skill sets. Tackles should be over 6'4" and 300 pounds or more. They will asked to be especially stout in pass protection. Guards and center can be smaller but should be more nimble and able to pull on traps and counters. Offensive line is second in importance only to quarterback. Football is won in the trenches.

            Offensive Position Breakdown

            From: Coach Porell
            To: Coach Taggart

After working through spring practice, the spring football game and sever more practices I have had a chance to analyze each position and come up with a depth chart for each position. You will find the information below.

            -Quarterbacks
            Eveld
            Bench
            Floyd
            White

Eveld has proven to be the most talented quarterback on the roster and should be the starter. He is the most complete player. Bench has shown to be more accurate at times but has made some questionable positions. Floyd is a serviceable third option with less talent than either of the others. He is smart with the ball. White has the strongest arm but will need to improve accuracy. We would like to ask him to redshirt this season with the idea that he will compete for the starting job in 2014.

            -Halfbacks
            Shaw
            Pierre
            McCray
            Tice

Shaw is the most experienced and well-rounded player in the group, he is likely to get the most reps. We certainly expect Pierre to play a significant role as well. Though McCray and Tice are both true freshmen we expect they will both contribute as well.

            -Fullbacks
            Turner
            Sanchez

Though Turner is not overly skilled as a receiver his blocking skills have proven to be quite good. He is also a great short yardage rushing option. Sanchez could see the field at times.

            -Wide Receivers
            Davis
            Montgomery

            Dunkley
            Welch
            Duval
            Gonzalez
            Benjamin

We have a very talented group at wide receiver. Davis, Montgomery, Dunkley and Welch will all see significant playing time. When We spread the field Duval and Gonzalez will provide excellent depth. Benjamin does not fit into our plans this season and we suggest a redshirt year for him. Dunkley is our fastest receiver while Davis appears to be the most reliable target and best route runner.

            -Tight Ends
            Price
            McFarland

Though McFarland is the more experienced player Price has shown himself to be the better receiver and an adequate blocker. McFarland will be a solid #2 when we need the extra bulk on the field.

            -Offensive Linesmen
            LT Williams, Kaufman
            LG Martin, Hall
            C Reiter, Jozwiak
            RG Gudmundsson, Jacques, Threatt
            RT Eatmon, Lang

We have a fairly talented group along the offensive line. Williams and Reiter are the most well-rounded of the bunch and should be the leaders. Martin, Gudmundsson and Eatmon are all solid starters. Kaufman, Jozwiak and Lang are good backups. Jacques gives us a versatile, experienced option should we suffer any injuries. Hall and Threatt have potential for the future but we would suggest redshirt years for both of them in order to hone their skills and develop their bodies.

These are my observations and suggestions, I look forward to any insight you may have.

Coach Porell's Notes: On paper this is an easy one. We all know games aren't played on paper. Our focus offensively will be on play calling and execution. This is our first real, live action with these players in this system. All the hard work in the offseason has lead up to this moment.

                      USF Bulls Game Report

USF survives close one against McNeese State

CHRIS DUNKLEY SCORES THE FIRST POINTS OF THE SEASON ON A 60 YARD PASS FROM BOBBY EVELD

Bobby Eveld threw for a pair of touchdown passes and the Bulls' running backs added four more on the ground as South Florida survived in a game that was far too close against McNeese State.

Marcus Shaw ran for 101 yards and a pair of scores on 21 carries and added another score on a screen pass.

Chris Dunkley picked up 117 yards on six receptions, including an early 60 yard touchdown reception.

The Bulls picked up 179 yards on the ground on 45 rushes. Eveld was 19 of 34 for 234 yards through the air.

"We're looking for a balance in the offense." USF offensive coordinator Dave Porell said after the game. "There was some good and some bad today and we'll move forward from there.

McNeese State totaled 336 yards of offense in the loss.

Coach Porell's Notes: This is a great team we're facing this week in a hostile environment. One of the best teams we'll face this season. They struggled some with Western Michigan last week but we're not going to let that fool us for one second. They have talent everywhere on defense. DE Marcus Rush is a nightmare in the pass rush. OLB Denicos Allen is all over the place and CBs Darqueze Dennard ans Trey Waynes are going to be very tough to beat. Safety Isaiah Lewis can also cause problems.

Personnel Notes: We've moved Jordan Duval up to the 4th receiver spot after a great week in practice.

                                USF Bulls Game Report

USF hangs with Michigan State for three quarters, loses late

CHRIS DUNKLEY MISSES A LATE PASS FROM BOBBY EVELD

USF actually led Michigan State by a score of 17-10 going into the fourth quarter.

The Bulls had scored first via a one yard quarterback sneak by Bobby Eveld in the first quarter. USF added a 17 yard Eveld touchdown pass to Andre Davis in the second quarter and a 26 yard field goal by Marvin Kloss.

Michigan State's scores were a 32 yard field goal by Kevin Muma in the second quarter and a 14 yard Andrew Maxwell to Keith Mumphrey pass in the third quarter.

Michigan State was able to tie the game early in the final frame on a Maxwell to Paul Lang touchdown pass from four yards out. The drive was set up by a blocked punt.

After an electrifying 94 yard kick return touchdown by Chris Dunkley put the Bulls back up 24-17 Michigan State answered with another long drive that was capped by a third touchdown pass by Maxwell, this time to Tony Lippett.

Disaster struck for USF with just over two minutes to play when Micajah Reynolds busted through the Bull's offensive line and drilled Eveld, causing him to fumble. Michigan State's Ezra Robinson scooped up the ball. Four plays later Nick Hill pounded into the endzone from four yards out and the Spartans were on top 31-24 with 1:51 left to play.

Facing a fourth and 29 after a pair of sacks Eveld found a seemingly wide open Dunkley but the junior receiver apparently never saw the ball and it fell to the turf incomplete, ending USF's chances at tying the game.

"I don't know what happened yet." Bulls' offensive coordinator Dave Porell said about the final offensive play. "It looked like we had the first down there, maybe even a score. I'm not sure if Chris didn’t see it or didn’t expect it or whatever. We'll look at the tape Monday and figure it out."

USF totaled 323 yards of total offense, 226 through the air and 97 on the ground, including the two late sacks on Eveld.

Michigan State picked up 413 yards with 220 on the ground and 193 through the air.

USF turned the ball over three times while Michigan State did not turn it over once.

Eveld was 18 of 30 for 226 yards with a touchdown and a pick.

Marcus Shaw led the team with 39 yards on 14 carries while Michael Pierre managed 39 yards on just nine carries.

Andre Davis rolled up 102 yards on seven receptions and also scored a touchdown.
