Backstory:
A new era of Seattle Seahawks football is here with the hiring of coach Justin Halsne Sr. He is the father of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB, Justin Halsne. He was the QBs coach/ assistant HC with the AFL Championship winning Cleveland Browns. He was known as the QB guru within the Browns Franchise helping Nathan Russell develop the past 5 years into the QB he is today. Prior to his experience with the Browns, Justin Halsne was a long time backup for the Dallas Cowboys sitting behind the old time vet Andy Netherland. His career in the AFL was short lived after getting into a serious car accident that nearly tore off his throwing arm, but that didn't stop him from being involved in the AFL. After recovery from the injury, Justin Halsne went back to the Cowboys as a assistant in the QB room. He learned a lot with his time there that lead him to his gig as the QBs coach for the Browns. The rest is history, and now we are here!
I started this thread after playing all 4 preseason games, so I'll give you a recap of some important storylines going into preseason and how they shook out, along with the final depth chart heading into the season.
Preseason & Final Depth Chart for Regular Season/ Practice Squad:
With problems all around the Seattle Seahawks, I looked to FA to help bolster the depth of the team. The first move I made was signing LT Jeff Yarborough, and moved Raymond Andreozzi to RT. This move helped shore up both tackle spots while keeping the interior of the line the same. I also signed some depth at every position, besides kicker and punter, and wanted every position to duke it out. Nobody's spot was safe, which made it fun to not look at their overalls and just their play on the field. It was very surprising to see 60-65 OVR's making plays out there fighting for a paycheck, and some of them even stuck. But overall, here was some main questions going into the season with answers to follow:
1) Would Harvey Voss be able to hang onto his starting spot after last years poor performance, and hold off back up Jim Hall?
Both QBs played outstanding in the preseason. Both completing over 70% of their passes with no INTs, so it was a tough decision and could honestly go either way. But at the end of the day, the coaching staff felt that Jim Hall didn't do enough to beat out Harvey Voss for his starting spot. Look for Harvey Voss to be a break out candidate with it being a contract year for him.
2) Would Kareem Bryant be able to hold on to his roster spot after getting constantly torched last year?
With new coaching, nobody knew what to expect from Bryant, but it appeared that the new staff saw enough of his game film last year to determine how to move forward. Bryant was stashed on the depth chart and played minimally in games, mostly getting time with 3rd and 4th stringers. It came down to the last cuts, but the staff felt it was necessary to move on. Its a new chapter of Seahawks football!
3) Could the defense rally behind the likes of Akeem Moore and Marques Brown?
The first team D played well all throughout preseason. Having a 3 goalline stands holding them to FGs, a couple TDs (1 pick 6, and strip sack fumble), having a handful of sacks, and 2 Ints. It looks as if the two rookies Brendan Carr SS, and Justin Johnson ROLB are already making strides and having an impact on this D. With Bryants release, Gregg Capers gets the start opposite of Dashawn Ortiz with Mateo Butler in the slot. Free Agent DT Marcus Rice came in and impressed coaches day 1 with his work ethic, and the results showed on the field having 4 TFL, and a sack playing mostly with 2nd/3rd team D in the preseason. He will get the nod over rookie Cleo Humphrey, who will still see the field in sub packages. Overall this D is looking like an improvement from last year already.
