There are many reasons for his choice, both story-wise and gameplay-wise, so I'll let him commit and then discuss them

Good choice with U-Dub, will probably be good all four years in what is definitely the weakest of the three conferences

Welcoming the new Huskies : Interview with 5-star quarterback Tommy Jacobs

Mason Kelley : First of all, congratulations on being the newest Husky ! What motivated your choice to go to Washington instead of elsewehere ?

Tommy Jacobs : Thanks ! Well it wasn’t a simple choice really, both Minnesota and Tennessee had amazing things to offer as well. I think it all went down with the conversation I had with coach Sarkisian back in December, he really made me think hard about going to Seattle, how great a place it was both to study and play football, and how the team and the University would benefit by having me over there.

MK : Going back to your early recruitment process, Minnesota were clearer favorites, so what made you push them aside later on ?

TJ : Well, from my point of view, I simply think that they considered me a Gopher before they started recruiting me, given my family ties with the University and the fact that I’m already a little close to the team (I’m actually one of their biggest fans). Then when Washington and Tennessee came knocking, I just realized that there are things other than simply staying home and going to a good college, and seeing the other campuses made me think about other avenues. All in all, Washington and Tennessee made me think about Minnesota, and seeing the efforts both of them made to bring me in, versus what Minnesota did to sign me, the choice wasn’t as clear as it was at the start of my recruitment process.

MK : Did coach Sarkisian tell you anything about the role you’ll have at Washington starting next season ?

TJ : We haven’t talked about it yet, but my goal is to go there and perform as well as I can, hopefully I get to play as much as I would like, but I realize it all comes down to the coaching staff. I know that Keith (Price) is a senior, he had a great season last year, so it’ll be hard to take his place, but I’m one of those that think you have to earn your spot, so whether I do well enough to be on the roster or not, I’ll respect the decision made by the staff.

MK : What’s next for you until moving to Seattle ?

TJ : First of all, I’ll be studying for the final exams, then there’s prom and all that, and then there’s packing things and moving to the West Coast, finding a place, either on campus or in the city. Getting ready for pre-season will be a good part of what’s left to do as well, to be ready for the new season, whatever my role is.

I'm looking forward to those years of competition in the Pac-12 !

Thanks for following, let's hope he'll have a great career there !

I also mentioned there were gameplay-wise reasons to Tommy's choice of going to Washington. First of all, I like the storyline possibilities of a student going to college in another part of the country, a change of scenery from the home setting provides some good opportunities for character development. Secondly, I haven't played a Dynasty in the West yet, but I had done SEC (well part of one) and Big Ten ones (added to that, my first Big Ten Dynasty mode game was with Minnesota, so I wanted a change as well). Finally, when I began that write-up, pretty much the only active Pac-12 dynasty on here was the Oregon State one by Matt10, but there are numerous good SEC and Big Ten ones (namely DeeGeezy's, Tearz49ers' in the SEC and Cheese's, Hellisan's and DavidTheGreat20's in the Big Ten), so I wanted to do one in a lesser-shown conference. Of course, since the beginning of my write-up, both superjames1992s Cal and BookWork123's write-up are set in the Pac-12, so the conference will be well-represented as well.

BTW, I have updated the rules on the first page, to reflect the upcoming NCAA Football portion of the write-up.

Red : Denotes redshirt status for 2013

Coaching staff hands out redshirts for 2013, Qualls and Jacobs both to sit out

Coach Sarkisian met with the reporters after the redshirting announcements, and he had this to say : "We have handed out 8 redshirts for this season, all to freshmen who we believe will benefit from this extra year of training. We are confident that this year away from competition will be helpful in the long run."

Among the redshirted freshmen, defensive tackle Elijah Qualls and quarterback Tommy Jacobs jump quickly to the eye. "In both cases, we are looking to extend their eligibility because of the depth already in their positions. Elijah is a great player already, and we feel it wouldn't do him any good to play only occasional snaps on defense, so we'll be working with him all season and preparing him for a potential starting role next season. It's basically the same for Tommy. The fact that Keith (Price) is the established senior allow us to take our time with him, and prepare him to take over at starting quarterback from 2014 and on. We have a young core at the quarterback position, and with Keith graduating at the end of the season, next season is all up for grabs."

Gameplay-wise, I'd say they're pretty good, considering the fact the Tommy is rated just about equal to both Miles and Lindquist, and while they'll have one more season under their belts, they'll still be only backups, so will see limited game time behind clear-cut starter Price. Added to that the fact that I don't personally like scramblers (which Miles is), and that Tommy's important physical attributes are better than Lindquist's, his chances to be the starter next season are looking good.

Storyline-wise, coach Sarkisian has stated in his latest interview that Tommy is pegged to be the starter next season, barring some situation that would make one of the other QBs an over-the-top favorite. That part will be dictated by the season, but unless Price is injured early in the season and either Miles or Lindquist post a Heisman-worthy season, I'm pretty sure Tommy can win the starting job over the other two.

Thanks for following, it's always nice to answer reader questions !

Yeah, you had picked the right one, congrats ! And yes, the plan for Tommy is to work hard on his game to be ready for next season, and to take over starting duties for the next four years !

Thanks for the reply, glad to see you follow !

Bishop Sankey slips a tackle, and had 79 yards rushing on 18 carries in the game, with two touchdowns.

Huskies upset #18 Broncos, Coons 50yd FG prove to be enough

Seattle, WA -- Senior kicker Travis Coons' 50-yard field goal in the 3rd quarter was enough to secure the first win of the season for the Huskies, as they prevented a late comeback by Boise State to secure a 20-17 victory over the Broncos yesterday. Washington's ground attack was pretty much neutralized, gaining only 55 yards for the game, but senior quarterback Keith Price's 294 passing yards were enough to see his team upset the Broncos and record their first W of the year. Price went 30-for-41 and threw a touchdown pass to junior running back Bishop Sankey in the second quarter, after Sankey himself scored the first touchdown of the season on the opening drive of the game, a 6-yard score.

It was 17-0 when the Broncos finally scored, when junior kicker Dan Goodale drilled a 35-yard field goal to open the score for Boise State, near the end of the first half. Washington opened the second half with Coons' second field goal of the match, from 50 yards out (he had also kicked a 34-yarder late in the first quarter), and the Huskies' defense finally stopped the Broncos when it counted, after giving up 14 unanswered points in the final quarter. From there on it was only a matter of eating up the clock and seeing the game through to the end.

Still, it wasn't a game that went well in every aspect. For starters, Washington's offensive line appeared shaky, letting Price alone on numerous plays and allowing the Broncos to sack him a monstrous 12 times. On the defensive side, there was not enough pressure placed on Broncos quarterback Joe Southwick, and Washington's defensive coordinator Justin Wilcox was quick to point out the fact that "had he been on a better day, the result could've easily ben reversed, we were lucky to get away with the win at all." We can bet that even though the Huskies came out victorious, some extra practice drills on both sides of the ball have already been scheduled in light of the team's performance against Boise State.

The Huskies have a bye in Week 2, before traveling east on Week 3 to face the Illinois Fighting Illini at Soldier Field in Chicago on September 14.
