Illinois quarterback Nathan Scheelhaase celebrates with his teammates after a masterful performance

Scheelhaase's three touchdowns take down Huskies at Soldier Field

CHICAGO, IL -- It was an easy choice for Player of the game in the constest between Washington and Illinois. With two rushing touchdowns and another score through the air, it was a one-man show for the Illini, as redshirt senior quarterback Nathan Scheelhaase put the game away from the Huskies in Soldier Field. Down 0-3 in the second quarter, Illinois took the field and spectators simply watched the show unfold in front of them. Scheelhaase first ended an Illinois drive with a 10-yard score on the ground, before connecting with senior wide receiver Spencer Haris six minutes later on a 36-yard touchdown pass.

After a Washington touchdown by running back Bishop Sankey, the Illini quarterback struck again, this time capping a 56-yard drive with his second rushing touchdown of the day on an option play from the 1-yard line. Illinois would add a field goal near the end of the third quarter, and a late score by Sankey again would bring the Huskies to within one touchdown, but it was too little too late for Washington, as they surrender their first game of the year after a week 1 victory over then-ranked Boise State.

"There were many errors made during this game, both on the field and from the coaching staff," told coach Steve Sarkisian, "but in the end we simply didn't look like the team that beat the Broncos two weeks ago. We're going to have a good hard look at both games' tapes and single out which plays were running great, and which ones we're struggling with. Next week's game is going to be crucial to get back on the right track."

The Huskies are back home next week, as they'll be hosting the Idaho State Bengals at Husky Stadium. Good tickets are still available, and kickoff is scheduled for 7pm Pacific Time.

Huskies are back on the right track after a 33-14 win over Idaho State

SEATTLE, WA -- Overcoming a slow start against FCS oposition, the Huskies scored 17 unanswered points in the third quarter, en route to a 33-14 win over the Idaho State Bengals at Husky Stadium. Junior running back Bishop Sankey had a big day on the ground, amassing 156 yards on only 25 carries while catching 3 passes, but it was the defense that did most of the hard work, recording 6 sacks, three interceptions and a touchdown. Junior defensive end Andrew Hudson sacked quarterback Justin Arias 4 times himself and was named Player of the game for his performance, while freshman safety Trevor Walker came away with two interceptions, one he returned 35 yards for the first Washington touchdown of the day.

Washington started the game quite slowly, stopping the Bengals on their opening drive, but they could only convert that stop into a 19-yard field goal by Travis Coons, after they were stopped short of the goal line on 3rd-and-Goal. Idaho State scored a touchdown afterwards, cancelled only moments later by Walker's interception and subsequent touchdown. The Huskies fared a little better in the second quarter, and both teams went into halftime on a 16-14 scoreline. The third quarter was all Washington though, as two touchdowns (one each on the ground and through the air) and a 57-yard field goal by Coons effectively put the game out.

Washington opens their Pac-12 campaign next week, yet again at home as they receive the #24 Arizona Wildcats, who are yet undefeated this season, but didn't play this week. Opening kickoff is scheduled for 7pm Pacific Time.
