Re: #SWARM: A Westlake State Dynasty

Sorry for the quality. My phone is pretty trash. I'll try to take some better pics next time. Defense roster and players to watch will come in a few hours when I'm back from the gym.

I'm in on this, I love a good teambuilder dynasty. I like the uniforms. I thought they looked kinda "meh" in the first pictures, but seeing the posts from your practice, they look much better "in game."

I wouldn't worry too much about taking breaks. I usually disappear for 4-5 months during offseason in mine, and people are still kind enough to read on when I start it back up.

              The Westlake State Chronicle

              By Bruce James

Westlake, OH -- With the article I wrote on the offense yesterday, it's only fair I write one for the defense as well. Here are my top 3 Swarm defenders to watch.

              1. Terry Hale, OLB

Hale making a tackle during a scrimmage

I think the run defense for the team this season is going to be anchored by Hale. During practice, he was consistently making plays in the run game, stopping the offense from going anywhere. He's a senior, so he's got some experience, he's fundamentally sound, and he leads.

2 and 3. Chaz Montgomery and Robert Bonds

              Bonds breaking up a pass

If you can't stop the pass, you can't consistently win football games. End of story. The pass D will hinge on the ability of this junior cornerback tandem to cover and make plays. Both standing at 5'11, they'll have to make up for their lack of size with speed and smarts.

                Football has arrived in Westlake!

The Swarm will open their inaugural season of football on September 7th, at Florida State. The team is comprised largely of seniors from UAB, who have suspended their football program indefinitely.

The Swarm will be playing their home games at InfoCision Stadium in Akron for the next 2 seasons, before moving into their new stadium and joining the MAC in 2015.

                Schedule

                9/7: At #4 Florida State

                9/14: Northern Illinois

                9/21: At #11 Ole Miss

                9/27: North Texas

                10/5: Wyoming

                10/12: At Arkansas State

                10/19: NM State

                10/26: At Washington State

                11/2: At Old Dominion

                11/9: Western Kentucky

                11/11: At North Texas

                12/7: Texas State

This schedule is tough for a first year program. It was initially thought that the Swarm would play a hybrid schedule, with 6 FCS games, but AD John Stafford quashed that rumor yesterday.

                Quick side note

Next season's team preview will have an in depth roster breakdown, projections, etc. but this first year is going to be super rough and I want to speed through it. For that reason I also won't be doing game previews, or much new from around the nation. Season 2 will have all of those things, I promise. I just don't want to spend much time on a season where I'll probably get 3-4 wins, and I have no connection to these guys, they don't feel like my players as most of them are leaving and I didn't recruit them or anything like that.

Westlake State blanked 49-0 in debut

Swarm offense racks up just 172 yards - Broderick Booth passes for just 15 yards - Jacques Patrick runs for 160 yards

Seminole DE Josh Sweat knocks the ball out of the hands of QB Broderick Booth. This ended a Swarm drive that had gotten inside the 10.

Tallahasee, FL -- Westlake State, the newest addition to the FBS, took a 49-0 beating at the hands of the Florida State Seminoles in their debut.

The Swarm were clearly outclassed from kick off, getting the ball, promptly going 3 and out, and then allowing FSU to march down the field and punch it in with QB Deiondre Francois, who ran for 1 of his 2 rushing touchdowns.

The teams traded punts, thanks to a great play in pass coverage by FS Chip Guidry, knocking a pass out of the hands of the speedy WR Kermit Whitfield. But the very first play of the next drive, QB Broderick Booth tossed up a wobbly pass that was picked off by star FS Derwin James.

The Swarm got close to scoring only once, in the second quarter. With about 2 and a half minutes left, Booth completed a string of 3 passes to WR Kody Starks, then a 21 yard carry from HB Tyjuan Sparks got the Swarm into field goal range. A 17 yard completion to tight end JD Jolly put the ball at the 8 yard line with 54 seconds until halftime. But in a play that neatly summed this game up, DE Josh Sweat sacked Booth, knocking the ball loose and ending the drive.

The Seminoles would then demoralize Westlake by scoring a touchdown, courtesy of HB Jacques Patrick, who ran for 160 yards after star Dalvin Cook went out with injury.

The Swarm travel back home, before making the short trip to Akron to play against NIU, at "home" next week.

I think that's the worst loss I've ever taken in any football game. It was tough to finish. This team is horrible. Well, I'm going to kick off the NIU game now. Probably get 3-4 games in today, just doing little write ups after games is pretty easy. I'll do a midseason update with recruiting and stuff from around the nation. Like I said, just wanna speed through this season.

Westlake State trampled 51-7 by NIU

327 yards rushing for NIU - 38-0 halftime lead - NIU QB Hare with 310 all-purpose yards, 2 TD

Westlake State took another blowout loss in their second ever football game, this time a 51-7 drubbing at the hands of future MAC conference foe NIU.

The Huskies ripped the Swarm to shreds on the ground, gashing their front seven to the tune of 327 rushing yards.

The Huskies came out of the gates strong, pushing the pace and tiring out the Westlake defense with their no huddle offense. This allowed them to jump out to a quick 21-0 lead after the first. They racked up a whopping 125 rushing yards in the opening quarter, before scoring 17 more points before the break, to enter halftime with a 38-0 lead.

NIU would score another touchdown, a [B]Drew Hare[B] rushing score, before the 2 teams traded punts a couple times. NIU punted again, and the Swarm came down the field, got inside the 10 before capping off the drive with the first points in Westlake State football history, a 3 yard rushing touchdown from senior running back OJ McNair.

OJ McNair scoring the first touchdown in Westlake State history

"Demoralizing", said coach Banks when asked about the 2 blowouts. "It's tough to lose like that. I hate losing. Always have, always will. But I came here knowing that stuff like this was going to happen. We're a new program, and we're going to struggle. But I'm still giving this team my all."

Westlake State goes back on the road, this time to Mississippi, where they'll play #8 Ole Miss (3-0), (1-0 SEC).

Probably get 3-4 games in today, just doing little write ups after games is pretty easy. I'll do a midseason update with recruiting and stuff from around the nation. Like I said, just wanna speed through this season.
It sucks, yet it's fun in a weird way. I always remember back in my middle school days of being pissed if the CPU scored on me, and winning by even TRIPLE DIGITS was somehow fun. Now...that sounds boring as hell.

Rough start this year, but it's to be expected. Use it to grow, get some recruits etc, and you'll be good to go.

It is kind of fun, weirdly. I feel like I have purpose in losing, cause it's gonna be awesome here when we start winning. I have so many storylines I've just been thinking of for season 2 and onwards, I'm gonna be making a bunch of storyline recruits, it'll be fun. But this season, I have 0 attachment to anyone cause they're not really my guys.

                                I just hope I don't get fired.
