Preseason Game Recap: Raiders 34, Cowboys 28 (F/OT)
Cowboys' second unit lets Oakland come back and win it
The starters played three quarters, and for the most part, Coach Freday has no complaints about them. Zeke ran for nearly 100 yards, scoring twice. Dak had another turnover free performance against a very tough Raiders starting defense, hooking up with Cole Beasley for a 9 yard touchdown in the secoind quarter. The starting defense, while certainly not perfect, held Oakland in check. Sure, Derek Carr had a long touchdown to Amari Cooper early in the third, and Marshawn Lynch found a couple of big holes, but it was 28-13 Cowboys when the starting unit came off the field at the end of the third. Only then could Raiders back up QB Connor Cook lead the second unit on two 4th quarter touchdown drives to tie the game up. It certainly didn't help that Kellen Moore, who came on to QB for the Cowboys, decided to start turning the ball over, throwing three INTs in a very eventful 4th quarter. Meanwhile, that Cowboys defense? Well, we've mentioned how they've been struggling all preseason, especially the second unit. Well, today, in this 4th quarter, they couldn't stop your grandmother. As horribly as that 4th quarter end, it's amazing the Cowboys made it to overtime, and didn't let the Raiders win in regulation. It didn't matter, as Connor Cook found Seth Roberts wide open in the end zone on the first drive of OT.
Biggest Positive:
Well, Coach Freday fully believed that the Cowboys would have won if the first team had stayed in there the entire time, but since it's preseason, it's not really too big of a deal. So, obviously that is a positive. But, if we had to take something among the disaster that was the Cowboys' second unit, we would definitely say the running game. Coach Freday has honed in on Alfred Morris as the lead guy for the first six games while Ezekiel Elliott serves his suspension. His stats in this one weren't anything to write home about, but he has made a clear improvement since last week. The job is his to lose, over Darren McFadden, so as long as he doesn't regress in the final preseason game, where he'll be playing the whole game, the first half alongside the 1st team offense, he will start for the Cowboys in week 1.
Biggest Question Mark:
Obviously it's the defense. Forget the second team; Coach Freday still needs to see more out of the 1st team before he feels comfortable heading into the season. Thus, instead of the customary resting of the majority of starters in the final preseason game, we will see the ENTIRE 1st team defense play the first half Thursday against Houston. They haven't earned any time off in the mind of their new coach, and we'll see if they could step up. If they can't, the Cowboys might find themselves in more than their fair share of slugfests in 2017. But, the one thing that was really subpar on this night, and in practice all week? Pass rush. Where did it go? They looked so good last week against Indy, but only pressured Derek Carr once, not even recording a hurried throw or a sack. When you're struggling to stop the opposition, the last thing you need is to give the quarterback all day to throw, because even if your pass coverage is good, having that much time in the pocket will either allow the quarterback to make a play with his legs, or allow one of his receivers to eventually break free. Pass rush is the backbone of a solid defense.
Author's Note:
Alright, fellas, this is it. The next time you see me post an update in this thread, I will be all settled in college at UConn. Later today, I have to unplug the XBOX so it can make the trip up with me, so this marks the end of an era, but the start of an exciting new one. As I said in the opening post of this thread, I don't know if I'll be able to continue the solid pace in which I post updates, but I can guarantee that I will not lose touch with this 'chise, at least for the near future. Another thing I am a little unsure about is the quality of my screenshots. I mean, it's not like they're perfect now. I don't have an Elgato, and don't plan on every getting/needing one. What I've always done is just take pictures of my TV screen with my phone, after turning off all the lights in the room. But, since I'm not the one who will be bringing a TV to the dorm room, and since I'm living with other people, I don't know if it will be possible to produce the same level of screenshots every single time, which is really unfortunate, because I really wanted to share the Madden 18 experience with those of you who don't have the game. The graphics, obviously, get better and better each year as we continue to advance and develop technology as a society. Unless I find a quicker way to produce quality screenshots, I can't count on them to be consistent. After all, it takes me about two hours to write up the average game recap. I might not have the time to go all out trying to produce good images for you, but as always, I will do everything I can to create the best presentation possible. Thanks, once again, for all the support you've given me over the last 4 years, and hope to have you keep supporting me for years to come.
