Preseason Game Recap: Raiders 34, Cowboys 28 (F/OT)
Cowboys' second unit lets Oakland come back and win it

The starters played three quarters, and for the most part, Coach Freday has no complaints about them. Zeke ran for nearly 100 yards, scoring twice. Dak had another turnover free performance against a very tough Raiders starting defense, hooking up with Cole Beasley for a 9 yard touchdown in the secoind quarter. The starting defense, while certainly not perfect, held Oakland in check. Sure, Derek Carr had a long touchdown to Amari Cooper early in the third, and Marshawn Lynch found a couple of big holes, but it was 28-13 Cowboys when the starting unit came off the field at the end of the third. Only then could Raiders back up QB Connor Cook lead the second unit on two 4th quarter touchdown drives to tie the game up. It certainly didn't help that Kellen Moore, who came on to QB for the Cowboys, decided to start turning the ball over, throwing three INTs in a very eventful 4th quarter. Meanwhile, that Cowboys defense? Well, we've mentioned how they've been struggling all preseason, especially the second unit. Well, today, in this 4th quarter, they couldn't stop your grandmother. As horribly as that 4th quarter end, it's amazing the Cowboys made it to overtime, and didn't let the Raiders win in regulation. It didn't matter, as Connor Cook found Seth Roberts wide open in the end zone on the first drive of OT.

    Biggest Positive:

Well, Coach Freday fully believed that the Cowboys would have won if the first team had stayed in there the entire time, but since it's preseason, it's not really too big of a deal. So, obviously that is a positive. But, if we had to take something among the disaster that was the Cowboys' second unit, we would definitely say the running game. Coach Freday has honed in on Alfred Morris as the lead guy for the first six games while Ezekiel Elliott serves his suspension. His stats in this one weren't anything to write home about, but he has made a clear improvement since last week. The job is his to lose, over Darren McFadden, so as long as he doesn't regress in the final preseason game, where he'll be playing the whole game, the first half alongside the 1st team offense, he will start for the Cowboys in week 1.

    Biggest Question Mark:

Obviously it's the defense. Forget the second team; Coach Freday still needs to see more out of the 1st team before he feels comfortable heading into the season. Thus, instead of the customary resting of the majority of starters in the final preseason game, we will see the ENTIRE 1st team defense play the first half Thursday against Houston. They haven't earned any time off in the mind of their new coach, and we'll see if they could step up. If they can't, the Cowboys might find themselves in more than their fair share of slugfests in 2017. But, the one thing that was really subpar on this night, and in practice all week? Pass rush. Where did it go? They looked so good last week against Indy, but only pressured Derek Carr once, not even recording a hurried throw or a sack. When you're struggling to stop the opposition, the last thing you need is to give the quarterback all day to throw, because even if your pass coverage is good, having that much time in the pocket will either allow the quarterback to make a play with his legs, or allow one of his receivers to eventually break free. Pass rush is the backbone of a solid defense.

    Author's Note:
Alright, fellas, this is it. The next time you see me post an update in this thread, I will be all settled in college at UConn. Later today, I have to unplug the XBOX so it can make the trip up with me, so this marks the end of an era, but the start of an exciting new one. As I said in the opening post of this thread, I don't know if I'll be able to continue the solid pace in which I post updates, but I can guarantee that I will not lose touch with this 'chise, at least for the near future. Another thing I am a little unsure about is the quality of my screenshots. I mean, it's not like they're perfect now. I don't have an Elgato, and don't plan on every getting/needing one. What I've always done is just take pictures of my TV screen with my phone, after turning off all the lights in the room. But, since I'm not the one who will be bringing a TV to the dorm room, and since I'm living with other people, I don't know if it will be possible to produce the same level of screenshots every single time, which is really unfortunate, because I really wanted to share the Madden 18 experience with those of you who don't have the game. The graphics, obviously, get better and better each year as we continue to advance and develop technology as a society. Unless I find a quicker way to produce quality screenshots, I can't count on them to be consistent. After all, it takes me about two hours to write up the average game recap. I might not have the time to go all out trying to produce good images for you, but as always, I will do everything I can to create the best presentation possible. Thanks, once again, for all the support you've given me over the last 4 years, and hope to have you keep supporting me for years to come.

Good luck at UConn. I enjoy your writing, very detailed. What major are you gunning for? UConn was one of my top choices for college but bad decisions effed that up for me. Good luck to you.

I'm in the same boat as you, I have to figure out how I'm going to progress with my work now that I'm moving into college too. I've looked into getting an Elgato (and I think it could be a good buy because my brother would probably use it too), but we'll see.

I wish the best of luck as you figure as this out, and I'm looking forward to more thread posts when you get the time. As others have said, you're one of the better Madden 'chisers on the boards so your success is much deserved.

Thanks for the kind words, enyc. I'm studying accounting, and am kind of amazed myself at how strong the business, and accounting, programs are here. Can't wait to get started.

Thank you, mi amigo. It would be really nice to see you with an Elgato. It would make your UConn 'chise even better. But yeah, I'm all settled in here now, so how about I sit down and whip out a couple of posts?

An Elgato would make any dynasty look good hahahah. For me, it would also allow me to possibly start producing videos and commentaries.. which I would really, really, really like to do. But we'll see.

I had to LOL at the Biggest Question Mark being defense. I know the Cowboys aren't as good on defense compared to the offense but I always think back to your Bowling Green 'chise and how terrible Coach Freday's defenses were. Hopefully he'll turn the corner on that side of the ball at some point.

Preseason Game Recap: Cowboys 20, Texans 19
Preseason ends with Freday's first win

Okay, that was interesting. The starters for both teams played just the first quarter, with rookie Deshaun Watson getting the nod for Houston. He led them on a 7 minute drive that eventually fizzled out just across midfield, much to Coach Freday's delight, given how porous his defense had been in his first two preseason games. When his starting offense took the field, they looked unstoppable, once again. That is until Dak threw his first interception of the preseason to Brian Cushing in the end zone. So, on this night, all of the scoring came from the second and third units. Cowboys backup QB Luke McCown looked pretty impressive, in what was his first playing time this preseason. He threw a TD to rookie WR Ryan Switzer in the second a quarter, then followed it up with another stellar drive that ended with a 5 yard touchdown run from Alfred Morris, who continued to show tonight that he is at least capable of carrying the load on the ground for the first six games. 3rd string QB Kellen Moore, who had been the backup until this week, came on and added the go ahead touchdown in the 4th, a 12 yard strike to tight end Geoff Swaim. The Texans scored late to get within one, but being preseason and all, went for two and the win, only to be shut down. So, the Cowboys hung on to win by 1.

              Biggest Positive:

We've established the strength of this team is the offense, so this week, I'm going to look at the defense. They were much improved this week, which is a great sign going into the season. The second unit, obviously, is filled with guys that are bound to sub in from time to time, and are guaranteed to get their fair share of playing time, so it was just as important for them to play well as the 1st team defense. The pass coverage was much better, the front seven did a much better job containing the run, all very good things moving forward. At least for the season opener against the Giants, we don't have to worry about stopping the run too much, since it seems like the Giants are allergic to running the football, but you never know, it might come in handy.

              Biggest Question Mark:

Coach Freday still hasn't seen much in the way of pass rush, aside from those one or two drives in his first preseason game against Indianapolis. Don't get me wrong, it's not like they haven't been able to collapse the pocket, it's just that it is taking too much time for them to do so. When the professional QB gets an ample amount of time to throw the ball, or scramble out of the pocket, he is bound to make a big play with his feet, or find somebody open downfield, no matter how good the pass coverage is. That effect was seen a little bit here tonight. Many of the Houston scoring drives were the result of backup QB Tom Savage being patient, waiting for the pass coverage to slowly break down, since he had enough time to sit and wait for that to happen. The pass coverage looked good enough, but it means almost nothing without the defensive line being able to do their jobs.

Another minor note worth sharing in this one is that there a couple of minor injuries suffered by members of the Cowboys offense. We'll address those very soon.

Cowboys suffer two offensive injuries in preseason finale

                September 1, 2017

Arlington, TX --- As the Cowboys look past the preseason and prepare for their regular season opener against the Giants next Sunday night, they learned today that two offensive players suffered significant injuries in last night's preseason finale, a win against a Texans teams with heavy hearts, due to the tragedy taking place in Houston following Hurricane Harvey. RG Jonathan Cooper and QB Luke McCown were the ones to go down. Cooper, who was expected to be the Cowboys' starting left guard, tore an abdominal muscle, but will only miss the season opener. McCown on the other hand, suffered a fractured shoulder blade taking a sack in the 3rd quarter of Thursday's game, and is scheduled to miss 20 weeks, which should take him out until the NFC Championship Game, if the Cowboys get that far. Of course, McCown was only expected to be the backup quarterback to Dak Prescott, but now that he is essentially out for the season, the Cowboys might be tempted to pick up another QB as insurance, because Coach Freday has not liked what he has seen out of Kellen Moore this preseason, the only other QB on the roster. As for Cooper, his absence, albeit for a game, makes one of the league's best offensive lines just a little weaker at the moment, and they will certainly have to work harder to slow the Giants' revamped pass rush.

Cowboys sign Robert Griffin III, place McCown on IR

Griffin in his glory days with Washington

                            September 4, 2017

Arlington, TX --- Just six days before the season opener, and right after the Cowboys finalized their 53-man roster, Jerry Jones felt like an extra option was needed. With backup QB Luke McCown set to be sidelined for most of the season anyway, the Cowboys were going to be left with just two QBs on the roster for the majority of the season. Mr. Jones felt it would simply be easier to place McCown on IR, ending his season, and using the freed up roster space to sign an additional QB, just as an insurance policy. That man ended up being Robert Griffin III. The former Washington Redskin and Cleveland Brown, whom RoundingThird got to watch in person in college at Baylor when they played at UConn, was signed to a one year deal, meaning his only purpose, for now, is to just provide an extra body at the quarterback position. Coach Freday lacks trust in former Boise State star Kellen Moore, so it is expected that RGIII will serve as the backup to Dak Prescott. Acquiring him now, on a Monday, should allow Griffin to adequately learn the playbook and participate in a full week of practice, in case the Cowboys do need him in Sunday night's season opener against the Giants.

                              2017 Cowboys Season Preview

                              (WARNING: Contains Explicit Language)

I want you men to take a minute to forget everything that happened last year. Why? It doesn't matter. We know how we good we are. We know we can beat anybody. So don't let your minds dwell on that fateful January afternoon when Aaron Rodgers pulled off a miracle. Set your minds on a particular February afternoon in Minnesota. Keep dreaming of the glory that is to come, and use it to motivate you on the field. After all, we are America's Team, right? Fight for that extra yard, reach out for that ball, lunge for that extra tackle. Go all out for that extra hit and tackle. Let's go, Cowboy Nation. #GiddyUp

                                Week 1 Schedule:

                                The Lead:
Patriots set to defend their 5th Super Bowl title, host Chiefs
Raiders, Titans look to move past last year's disappointing finishes
Playoff hopeful Bucs are Jay Cutler's first challenge in an all-Florida matchup
Giants, Cowboys meet in Arlington with the loftiest of expectations this season
Peterson brings his new squad to his old stomping grounds on a Monday Night showdown

                                Author's Note:
So, with the sudden turn of events in the Ezekiel Elliott suspension saga, I feel as though it is necessary to wait for the final ruling before starting the season. How ever long he is required to sit out will be how long he sits out in this 'chise. Stay tuned.
