      MEET A MOUNTAINEER…
      G KASEY ROBINSON
FR; 6-5, 306; SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ

If you asked WVU head coach KC Duane if there was one player on his board that was a must-get last year, Kasey Robinson was it.

The Mountaineers offensive line was hit hard by graduation after the back-to-back BCS title game appearances. The recruits who had been brought in as the next wave didn’t live up to the hype. Serviceable players but not championship caliber.

That’s where the Mountaineers pursuit of Robinson began. The #1 guard in his class and a USA Today All-American, Robinson came as advertised – a big bruising blocker who could plow through you or pull on a sweep and put you on your butt.

Robinson has been an anchor on the offensive line – a remarkable accomplishment considering he’s starting as a true freshman.

The future looks bright for the young man they call “Big Rob” – perhaps it even includes playing on Sundays.

West Virginia quarterback DaRon Barrett gets set to throw a pass in the Mountaineers 27-17 win over TCU Saturday at Milan Puskar Stadium in Morgantown.

Horned Frogs make Mountaineers sweat in second half

COACH KC DUANE POST GAME QUOTES

        On the game overall…

“Just more of our season. Great first half. We dominate and lead 17-7 at the break. Next thing you know it is 17-17 with eight minutes left in the game. I don’t know what it is but we just have trouble putting together a complete game. Thankfully our offence woke up in the fourth with a field goal and major in their last two drives. It was getting scary there for a while.”

        On the offence…

“DaRon was on fire in the first half with 16 straight completions to start the game. Doug Smith is running hard. We go into the half with 243 yards offense. Then we get 41 in the third quarter. Then we catch fire on the last two drives again. Just way too much inconsistency and it’s going to bite us in the *** against a team like Oklahoma or Texas.”

        On the defence...

“Holding TCU to 367 yards with their no-huddle was pretty good in my books. What was even better were the three turnovers. As long as we keep winning that turnover battle each game, we have a shot.”

On freshman corner Elgin Williams two interception performance…and DeAngelis…again…

“He’s had an increased role since Mike Burnett got suspended by the NCAA and all he has done is get three picks in two games. He’s earned more playing time. I think he got tired of all the pub Michael DeAngelis was getting, so he’s trying to chase him down although Mike got ANOTHER interception today. Kid is unbelievable.”

On corner Andrew Barnes 10 tackle performance…

“Andrew isn’t the greatest cover guy but if you beat him, he’s going to bring you down plus he’s great in run support and specials. I know he dropped the pass on the fake punt but the positives far outweighed the negatives today. I hope our fans cut him some slack.”

On the injuries to end Ryan Waters and linebacker Willie Rhodes…

"You know, we get Yanny Reyna back to kick. Nathan Harvey is okay with his hamstring. You think we are starting to get healthy and we lose Willie with a suspected broken tailbone. It doesn’t look good as he could be out for six weeks, maybe more. As for Ryan, it’s an abdominal strain. It’s not as bad. More of a week to week thing. We will find out more when we get the MRI results later tonight.”

On who could replace Rhodes at middle linebacker…

“Stevie Matich has had some reps already this year and he came in and did okay. Stevie is a little undersized (214 lbs) and has trouble with the run, so we slid Tyrone Roberson in from the outside. He’s got more size (239 lbs) and he’s such an athlete. I thought he held his own in the fourth quarter.”

On the upcoming bye week and final push…

“We need to start thinking about the commitment that you need to be a championship team. It’s not playing four out of five plays or a series when you need it. It’s going hard every single play, every single series. Once we figure that out, we will be fine. But that’s what we are going to stress to them.”

West Virginia Welcomes Second Trio of Recruits

          Morgantown (AP) –

The West Virginia Mountaineers have announced another three commits for the 2043 season.

Orlando Carmada is a 5 star recruit ranked as the 2nd best quarterback in the 2043 class. A 6-4, 232 pound pocket passer, Carmada is a USA Today All-American, a Michigan All-State selection, and is listed as 29th ranked prospect on the Sparq 100 board.

Josh Michael Vincent is a 3 star recruit ranked as the 34th best defensive tackle in his class. Listed at 6-2, 252 pounds, the Oakwood, Ohio product is strong against the run.

Reginal Toth is a 3 star recruit ranked as the 62nd best outside linebacker in the 2042 class. A classic run-first linebacker, the 6-0, 206 native of Hendersonville, NC is currently at East Mississippi Community College and will be at spring practice.

              MEET A MOUNTAINEER…
              LB TYRONE ROBERSON
              FR; 6-3, 229 WELLSBURG, WV

In high school, Tyrone Roberson could do it all.

              Basketball? All state guard.

Track? He competed in the national shotput finals.

Football? A two way all state player at safety and halfback.

All of those accomplishments also turned out to cause problems for recruiters. Where would Roberson project and would he succeed? Perhaps that’s why Roberson was only a 3 star recruit who had mild interest from Virginia.

The WVU coaching staff couldn’t pass on the athleticism though. Although many projected him to be a very good strong safety, the Mountaineers moved him to outside linebacker.

Although used sparingly early in the season, when Roberson has come in, he has made an impact. He started in the second half of a 55-7 blowout win against Texas Tech and made four tackles – three of which were for losses.

With the current injury to starting middle linebacker Willie Rhodes, Roberson versatility will see him get some reps inside.

Chad Cantrell Dismissed from WVU football team
                Morgantown (AP) –

The West Virginia Mountaineers have dismissed wide receiver Chad Cantrell from the football team after violating team rules for a third time.

The junior from North Brunswick, New Jersey was suspended prior to the Texas Tech game and then violated team rules after the TCU game.

Cantrell was also suspended for breaking team rules in the 2040 season.

Cantrell finishes his WVU career with 28 receptions for 235 yards and two touchdowns.

“He was a promising four star recruit with talent but we have a three strike policy in place when it comes to violations. We wish Chad all the best,” WVU head coach KC Duane stated.

In other news, the Mountaineers added their seventh commit for 2043 in guard Sakeem Stone. Stone is native son of West Virginia, hailing from St. Mary’s. The 6-0, 317 pound Stone is a great pass blocker and is listed as the 65th best guard in this year’s class.

COACH KC DUANE POST GAME QUOTES

                      On the game overall…

“I liked what I see offensively. It seemed like we score at will in the first half. Even Alfonso and the two’s moved the ball in the fourth. Defensively, a little bit too much inconsistency. We had a bend but don’t break mantra on defence. It wasn’t a championship caliber performance.”

                      On the offence…

“Great start. They come with the house on that play that DaRon hits Doug Smith on an angle route for 57 yard touchdown – great blitz pickup by our guys. Loved our big plays today. Chase Sykes with touchdowns of 42 and 24 yards. David Smith with a 26 yard touchdown catch – and he had that 34 yarder where he got knocked out at the three. DaRon with a 20 yard run for TD on an option – lots of fireworks today.”

On halfback Doug Smith’s performance and injury…

“Six catches for 110 and a touchdown and then 99 yard rushing on 16 carries. And he was just starting to get cranked up – just starting to run hard. He was heating up and then he tweaked his shoulder. He could have gone if it was a tighter game but given the score we played it safe. As far as the injury, he’ll be good for next week.”

On defensive end Ryan Waters seven tackle game…

“Ryan isn’t a superstar but he’s just a really good football player who makes plays for us. A sack seven tackles – five of which for losses. So glad to see a kid who’s played for us since being a freshman go out the way he did today. Same thing with Walter Marquardt. Five tackles, three TFL’s and a sack. Nice way to end your games at Milan Puskar.”

                      On senior day…

“Weird how we finish with four on the road but it is what it is. It was nice to see all our seniors be able to get on the field and get some reps. Fred Abrams getting a sack late in the game was icing on the cake. Guy waits for three years to start, we decide to go with Seth Johnson, Fred just keeps working hard regardless and to get that sack today…special.”

On performance of freshman linebacker Tyrone Roberson…

“You could see the wheels spinning. Once he starts reacting and not thinking, he’s going to be scary. When he reacts, like he did on that toss where he blew it up, he’s a monster. He’s got time to figure it out. He’s only a freshman.”

On his final game at Milan Puskar Stadium…

“To be honest, I really didn’t think about it until now. Actually, I thought about it at the start of the fourth quarter when our band played the alma mater. Then it hit me that this was my final game. Then I got back into thinking about the game.”

On the divisional and conference breakdown…

“We finish with four games on the road. We’re at 5-0 in conference. Texas is at 3-2 but we still have to play them and Oklahoma. And with Baylor’s big win at home over Oklahoma (48-37), they’re at 5-0 and the Sooners are at 4-1. It’s wide open in both divisions. We just have to keep on winning.”

                            RB DOUG SMITH
                            SR; 6-1, 227; TALLMADGE, OH

Doug Smith liked football growing up but he didn’t love it.

He loved to hang out with the wrong people and do the wrong things.

Now Smith wasn’t into any criminal activity but school and sports were an afterthought. Partying, playing online poker and skipping class were.

Then he started working out in the gym as a sophomore – “to look better for the girls” – as he put it.

Smith found out that he loved to work out more than partying. The skinny sophomore transformed himself into a beast by the time his senior year in Ohio rolled around.

Smith also realised something else – the harder you work, the harder it is to surrender. He committed himself to football and he got a commitment from West Virginia.

The ‘Tallmadge Tornado” has had to wait until his senior year to gain a starting spot but he’s responded.

Through eight games, Smith is on pace for over a 1,000 yards rushing (he has 790 with five TD’s) and has proven to be solid receiver as evidenced by his 57 yard reception against Kansas. His numbers to date include 33 catches for 322 yards and two touchdowns through the air.
