Re: A Season With Penn State...

Hey Trojan... Truth be told I've peeked in on this numerous times, and I would get confused on why I'm looking at the Mountaineers given the title of the thread, and sort of move on. But I checked on it enough and loved your writing I finally found the post, maybe page 11, where you made the transition. I just wanted to mention I really like your writing style and find the game overviews, "meet a" pieces, and everything really enjoyable. This dynasty from a 30,000 foot view perspective has been an incredible ride, it took so long to get some consistent winning going and then Coach Duane had some spectacular results in Penn State and at WVU.

Such a massive dynasty with so much history actually gives me the idea that someone could create a dynasty called "turning point" or something, playing a lot but doing a writeup on the game(s) that turned certain seasons around, possibly even going back and forth between years to tell new stories. Heck maybe that would be more confusing than doing a normal dynasty but kinda fun.

Anyway... I hope you will be found around these parts for a long time even if this is the last season at WVU. Tough loss to Texas, that was a freaking shootout, and obviously SMU disappointing after a big win against Oklahoma... I said to myself, find that turnover margin and you'll find the culprit... SMH I hate that when that happens.

Thanks for the props and for checking in! Always more fun when you realise that someone is reading and/or following.

That's a pretty dynamic idea regarding the 'turning point' storytelling. I think it would allow for more focus on the games and less on storytelling but still trying to maintain storylines. Lol - might be an idea for my next coach's journey.

As for the last three games...man the highs and lows of NCAA14 at its best.

WVU is an 88, so to beat 90 Oklahoma team was big, but to then get stunned by a 75 SMU squad - they were the lowest ranked team I had EVER (NCAA 12 and 14 multiple dynasties) lost to. SO PAINFUL.

Then to be down 27-6 to a 93 Texas team after 1Q, then rally to led 35-34 at the half, only to have a backbreaking INT...it was really tough.

Oh well, the Bowl Season awaits.

Oregon State Beaver quarterback Sean Sanders scrambles for a first down in second quarter action in the Alamo Bowl on December 29th. The Beavers would defeat the West Virginia Mountaineers 14-7 to win the 2043 Alamo Bowl.

Mountaineers fourth quarter rally falls short - Finish at 8-5

COACH KC DUANE POST GAME QUOTES

                On the game overall…

“Big momentum shift in the first quarter when we couldn’t score on first and goal from the six. They stuff as on fourth down at the two and then they march 98 yards to go up 7-0. Then they add another as we just watched on defence. On offence, nothing. Nothing at all until the fourth quarter when we score to get some life. Then a nice march that starts at our 20 yard line that gains traction all the way to their 25. Then we fizzle out with just under two minutes left. Just the way things have been going for us the last three games. We could never put it all together. ”

On being gouged for 212 yards rushing by the Beavers…

“Their back – Davis – was one of the best we’ve seen this year but we also didn’t get off blocks. We just got out-physicaled on the line of scrimmage and in the box. It’s something that has to improve if this team is to compete for a National Championship. I believe the talent is here – it’s just young. This group will be fine.”

On ending his career on a three game losing streak - his first in 17 seasons…

“Not exactly riding off into the sunset as we had planned. Maybe the critics were right. Maybe I’m too old and can’t relate to today’s kids. I’d beg to differ and point out back-to-back BCS games just three years ago but in today’s world it’s about immediacy.”

On walking off the field one last time…

“Initially anger. Then there’s sadness there. Sadness that it didn’t end better for this group of kids. I’ve had my glory, my bowl wins and my championships. I’ve been to the top of the mountain. I wanted this group of young kids to feel that. We just lost our way in the last month. Big win against Oklahoma and then the wheels feel off against SMU. Tough loss to Texas and then another tough loss today to Oregon State. Just a frustrating way to end it all when all of it was right in front of us – including a possible National Championship.”

On rumors that he might come back for one final year…

“Look guys, we lost three straight. Do I like that? No. But it’s not going to change my decision. It was a good run. 296 wins and five National Championships aren’t too shabby for a guy who was a walk-on at Idaho. It’s been a great ride. It’s over.”

Duane to be honored at BCS Championship Game
Title game will feature Duane’s two former teams

                  ESPN -

KC Duane’s final season may not have ended as he had wished but he is still going to go the BCS Championship game.

A three game losing streak that culminated in a 14-7 loss to Oregon State in the Alamo Bowl saw the Mountaineers go from a #3 ranking and BCS Championship aspirations to losing out on a chance to win the Big 12 Conference title and then subsequently losing the Alamo Bowl.

The dream season of 14-0 – which meant a National Championship and 300 wins for Duane – turned into a nightmare as the California native got stuck on 296 wins.

Duane finishes his illustrious 27 year career four wins short of that target but is going to the 2042 BCS Championship game regardless.

Reports indicate that Duane has been invited by Penn State and Wake Forest in conjunction with the NCAA to be a special guest at the game in Glendale, Arizona. Those sources indicate that there will be a pre-game video tribute and that Duane will be part of the coin toss ceremony.

Duane previously coached at Penn State from 2024 to 2037 and won four BCS titles during that time. Prior to that, Duane was the head coach at Wake Forest from 2016 to 2023. His run at Winston-Salem came to an end with a 10-4 team that won the Sugar Bowl in 2023 and finished ranked #7 – at that time the highest ever ranking in school history.

To say Duane had an impact on both programs is an understatement.

Wake Forest 10-win season in 2023 was the most by a Demon Deacon team since 2006. In the 18 seasons after his arrival at Wake Forest, the Demon Deacons have had one losing season. In the previous 18 seasons before Duane arrived, they had nine losing seasons. Although Duane didn’t win a BCS Championship at Wake Forest he is credited for raising the school’s prestige during his time there which has allowed Wake Forest to get to the next level under current head coach DJ Durkin.

Upon arriving at Penn State, Duane inherited a team that had only four 10-win seasons in the first quarter of the century. Since Duane’s arrival in 2024, the Nittany Lions have rattled of 10 wins or more in 15 out of the 17 seasons since – including the four BCS titles.

#1 ranked Wake Forest is the only undefeated team remaining in the NCAA at 13-0 and is coming off 44-10 drubbing of Miami in the ACC Championship game.

#2 Penn State is coming off a miraculous come-from-behind win against Nebraska in the B10 Championship game. The Cornhuskers held a 33-14 lead with 12:29 remaining but the Nittany Lions would reel off 27 straight points to claim a 41-33 win.

                          ESPN, Glendale, Arizona –

When it was all said and done retiring West Virginia head coach KC Duane could actually smile after the 2042 BCS Championship game even though it didn’t feature his Mountaineer team.

“What a heck of a football game between TWO championship teams,” said Duane after Wake Forest won 17-14 against Penn State on a 23 yard walk-off field goal by Richard Overstreet.

For the Demon Deacons it was their first ever national title and it brought out some emotion from Duane, who coached at Wake Forest from 2016 through 2023. Duane also had coached at Penn State from 2024 to 2037 and won four BCS championships there.

“I wouldn't have enjoyed the success I did without the opportunity Wake Forest gave me, so I will always be a Wake Forest fan. A lot of people are gone from when I was there over 20 years ago, but a lot of people remain too. Equipment managers, team doctors, support staff. I saw a lot of familiar faces who were players and students when I was there and they were here with their kids today. It was great to catch up,” said Duane.

“In a way, I’m glad they won. Make no mistake about it – I would have been happy for Penn State as well had they won but the folks in the Winston-Salem region are great people and it was so nice to see them experience something that they never have before. I’ve done it, the folks at State College have, now the people of Winston-Salem can say they have too,” said Duane.

The game was tied at 14-14 when the Demon Deacons took over on their own 41 with 2:06 remaining. Quarterback Stephen Hamilton manufactured a drive that was highlighted by a 3rd and 10 conversion to receiver Vince Manning for 16 yards with 23 seconds remaining which gave Wake Forest the ball at the Penn State nine yard line.

A couple of plays later is was Overstreet’s kick that sent the Wake Forest fans into a frenzy.

EXTRA POINTS: Duane was honored prior to the game by both teams with a video tribute that featured former players, coaches and administrators. He was also present during the coin toss.

                              The future?

There is a part of me that wants to sign another five year contract and keep this going for a couple of reasons.

One - reducing awareness to 76 and under for my players plus the Fatigue reset is posing a challenge.

Two - who the h&$* wants to finish at 8-5 with a three game losing streak?

Then, there is a finality to it all. You have to end a dynasty at SOME point. Good dramatic finish as well with Duane’s two former teams in the big game.

And I usually just play in the fall/winter and reboot in the fall. Thinking of starting from scratch next September- another journey.

Wondering for some input and advice!
