    WEEK 11 PREVIEW

    Matchup Preview *|* November 4, 2034
    @
    #2 Penn State Nittany Lions
    (8-0 (5-0), Away)
    #22 Michigan Wolverines
    (6-2 (5-1), Home)
    Game Notes

Penn State defeated Northwestern 37-13 at Beaver Stadium to improve their record 8-0 overall and 5-0 in conference play.

Michigan squeaked by Michigan State 22-21 at Spartan Stadium to move to 7-1 overall. The Wolverines improved to 5-1 in conference action, and with MSU and Ohio State at 4-1 in B1G play, things are getting cluttered at the top.

Coach KC Duane is 7-3 lifetime against Michigan while at PSU – including a 3-2 record at the Big House – with the most memorable win in the series being the “Miracle at Michigan’ game on Nov.6, 2032 in which Penn State prevailed 35-31 by scoring three touchdowns in the last 4:16 seconds to stun the Wolverines.

Penn State’s Damien Ashley watching himself cross the goal line on the Jumbotron at Michigan Stadium. Ashley’s 22 yard fumble recovery for a TD gave PSU a 14-0 lead in the second quarter. The Nittany Lions would go on to defeat the Wolverines 27-9.

PENN STATE PREVAILS 27-9 AT MICHIGAN
Press Clippings from Coach Duane's post-game presser...

      On the game plan …

“We always want to establish the run early and we had success, so if it’s not broke, don’t fix it. We just continued to pound the rock with Dan Reid and it worked. It kept Michigan’s powerful offence off the field and it kept our defence fresh throughout the game.”

      On HB Dan Reid’s 123 yard effort…

“Nothing fancy but effective. We ran quite a bit of power, some read option, with some dives as well. It was basically us imposing our will on offence. The offensive line was solid today and Reider benefitted from it. It also helped having a lead. With a lead, we can grind it out and play our style of game.”

On SS Damien Ashley’s 22 yard fumble return for a touchdown early in the 2nd quarter…

“That was the turning point of the football game. It gave us a 14-0 lead and the way our defence was playing, it seemed like that would be enough. Great ht on the play by our safety – Jon Jackson – to jar the ball loose from their quarterback. First thing JJack’s high school coach told me about him was that he was a hitter – you saw it on that play.”

      On Ashley’s play overall…

“There is a reason Damien is an All-American. He’s such a balanced player. He’s a great cover guy and he helps so much in the run game. He had what? 6 or 7 tackles today? I know he had 4 TFL’s. And, of course, the fumble return for the touchdown. Between him and JJack, I think it’s one of the biggest reasons why this 4-2-5 is working so well for us.”

On being the subject of “A Season With…”

“Man, you feel the pressure of everything being documented. You love to share what it’s like inside our program but you also feel this extra pressure to win because of it. You don’t want to disappoint your fans and you don’t want to give any satisfaction to the naysayers. The biggest thing is that you don’t want to disappoint yourself and your program.”

            PENN STATE PROFILE:
            WR TERENCE HAIRSTON
JR (RS); 6-3, 199 MONCKS CORNER, SC

Terence Hairston is probably the most gregarious member of the Penn State Nittany Lions.

Whether it’s jawing at teammates in practice or opponents in games, Hairston is the king of the one liners.

Hairston is also the Nittany Lions most explosive receiver.

With a great set of hands and 4.42 speed, Hairston is a threat every time he touches the ball and is the type of player who can break a game wide open – like he did last year against Ohio State. The Nittany Lions were nursing a 14-0 lead against the Buckeyes in the third quarter when Hairston scored on a 55 yard touchdown reception on a play action pass. The touchdown was classic Hairston - using his speed to blow by the Buckeye secondary to score and blow the game open for Penn State.

His numbers last year – 28 catches for 403 yards and three touchdowns - were more reflective of the team’s woes at quarterback, but with a healthy James Madsen this season, Hairston is expected to improve on those and thus far he’s on pace to do so. Through nine games, Hairston has 23 catches for 376 yards and four touchdowns.

Penn State’s Justin Scott celebrates after scoring on a 96-yard interception return to give the Nittany Lions a 21-0 lead against the Ohio State Buckeyes. Penn State would go on to win 28-7.

PENN STATE CONINUES DOMINANCE OVER OHIO STATE WITH 28-7 WIN
Press Clippings from Coach Duane's post-game presser...

On beating Ohio State for the tenth straight game …

“We’ve had some great teams and so have they. I don’t know if we are in their heads or not – that’s a question you can ask Bo Pelini or their players. We just get amped up for them and truth be told, we just seem to make the big plays when we need them. Justin Scott’s pick six was another example – it blew the game wide open.”

On the first quarter which saw PSU go up 14-0…

“We were surgical on offence. Two drives, one 11 plays for 76 yards and a touchdown, the other 13 plays for 71 yards and a touchdown. That might have been the best quarter of football we played all year long. We ate up so much clock. And we were nine for nine on third downs in the first quarter – that’s insane. It’s a true testament to the focus and preparation of our players and coaching staff.”

On CB Justin Scott’s 96 yard interception return for a touchdown with 1:42 left in the second quarter to give PSU a 21-0 lead at the half…

“Now you know why he won the Thorpe last year. Big time players make big time plays. That was the ballgame right there. They’re on our four yard line. They score and it is 14-7 heading into the locker room and given how we weren’t up by more, you know it would have given them a boost. Instead it’s 21-0 and it’s the biggest play in the ballgame.”

On QB James Madsen, who was 26 for 32 for 225 yards…

“This are the type of games we expected from James last season but the injury didn’t allow us to see that. He was awesome today. Great decision making and he had some zip on the ball. He had some chemistry going today with Terence Hairston, who I think had eight catches and Tykiem Moore, who I think had six.”

On MLB Ahmad Stanford’s seven tackle, 4 TFL, one sack performance…

“He’s maintaining the standard of excellence that we have had at the middle linebacker position over the years. A lot of people wondered how the new defence would impact his numbers this year but the last time I checked, he’s leading the country in tackles, so I’d like to think it hasn’t been a problem.”

On holding Ohio State’s offence to 10 first downs and 196 yards in total…

“It was a true team effort. Everyone contributed in one way or another. I think the big thing was that we limited their time of possession (12:42) and they just couldn’t find any rhythm. They really only got going in the fourth when we played some softer coverages. I’m telling you, I just love watching the 4-2-5 that we are running this year. If I knew it was this much fun, we would have implemented it years ago.”

                    PENN STATE PROFILE:
                    TE TYKIEM MOORE
                    SR; 6-5, 234 VANDALIA, OH

Tykiem Moore is one of 11 players on the Penn State roster who hails from the state of Ohio. In fact, the only other state with more players is Pennsylvania itself with 25.

Moore, like many of his teammates from the Buckeye state, have been lured to State College by an environment of academics and success on the football field.

The Nittany Lions have won four consecutive Big Ten titles and appear on the verge of winning their fifth straight. Add to the mix that Penn State has beaten rival Ohio State the last ten games and you can see why there is an eastern migration of high end talent.

Moore has been a player whose performance has got better every year that he’s been on campus.

As a freshman, he caught 11 passes for 111 yards and 3 touchdowns. As a sophomore, those numbers increased to 21 catches for 248 yards and 5 touchdowns. In 2033, as a junior, Moore caught 42 passes for 71 yards and 5 TD’s. And this year as a senior, he’s set career highs in receptions (49), while racking up 634 yards and 2 touchdowns. Add in 21 career pancakes and you can understand why Moore is a valuable cog in the Nittany Lions offence.

                        Game Notes

*Penn State returns to action after beating Ohio State 28-7 in Columbus.

*Michigan State defeated Maryland 21-16 last week at Spartan Stadium.

*Penn State won last year’s matchup 29-15 at Spartan Stadium.

*KC Duane is 8-1 lifetime against Michigan State with the only defeat occurring on Nov. 29, 2025, when the Spartans prevailed 34-27 at home.

*With a win, Penn State would clinch the Big Ten East Division.

*Michigan State still has a faint chance at the divisional title but losses to both Ohio State (5-2) and Michigan (6-2) have made it an enormous challenge. A Buckeye loss to Iowa this week, combined with a Ohio State victory over Michigan and Indiana beating Penn State the following week, would allow the Spartans to claim the title if they win out against Penn State and Rutgers.

*Ohio State and Michigan cannot win the division as Penn State has the tiebreaker (head-to-head) on them.

*Minnesota (8-2; 6-1) has clinched the Big Ten West Division.

Penn State’s Terence Hairston is brought down on the Michigan State three yard line after a 67 yard reception. Dan Reid would score on the next play on a three yard run to give the Nittany Lions a 10-3 halftime lead. Penn State would go on to win 20-10 and clinch the Big Ten East Division title for the fifth consecutive season.

Press Clippings from Coach Duane's post-game presser...

                          On the game overall…

“That was just an old fashioned slugfest. Their front was physical and created problems for our running game all day long but luckily we did a good job of moving the ball through the air. We had a couple of big passing plays on O but it was tough. That said, our defence was lights out again today. Jon Jackson with that pick six was a game changer.”

On Terence Hairston’s 67 yard reception on 3rd and 20 late in the 2nd quarter…

“We were backed up and just looking to get some yardage. We called a weak flood and Terence just blows by their guys and makes a big play. We would have loved to see him score as he got tackled on the three but Reider did on the next play so it was all good. Terence is a playmaker and he showed you just how dangerous he can be on that play. That was a huge play as the score was 3-3 at the time. Now we go into the half with a 10-3 lead.”

On SS Jon Jackson’s 26 yard pick six in the third quarter which gave Penn State a 20-3 lead…

“I love JJack. He’s such an old school player. You walk into his room on the road the night before a game and he’s watching The NFL Network’s Top 10 Safety’s. I think he has it on a loop or something. That was a big play obviously. He sat there in Cover 3, jumped the out and away he went. It blew the game open for us and allowed us to work the clock a little more on offence.”

On QB James Madsen, who was 22 for 26 for 290 yards…

“He was our offence today. We could not run the ball at all and it was up to James to move the chains and he did what he could. He didn’t have much time today – I think he got sacked four times – and they had a lot of heat on him for the most part. I mean we had the 67 yarder to Hairston and a 32 yarder to Tykiem Moore. That’s 99 yards on two plays. Now do the math. 20 of 24 for 191 yards. There were a lot of checkdowns because of the pressure.”

On the three interceptions by Penn State…

“JJack’s was the biggest but that’s our defence – they are so aggressive to the ball. On Kellen Smith’s interception, we get great pressure from Bentram Sullivan to flush the quarterback to his right and he throws off his back foot across the field. On Clint Brown’s we’re in Cover 3 and he comes over the top help on the streak. These guys just have a nose for the ball.”

On clinching the Big Ten East Division for the fifth straight year…

“It’s testament to the quality of student-athlete we have here. It hasn’t been easy, we’ve had to overcome adversity on a lot of occasions but I think the one common denominator with all of our teams has been that we expect to win every game we play in. We play with confidence and it shows in tight games. We don’t panic when something goes sideways – we remain focused on what we have to do win.”

                                PENN STATE PROFILE:
                                JON JACKSON, SS
SO; 6-1, 189; FORT MILL, SC

Jon Jackson was frustrated after graduating from high school.

He was a star player in Fort Mill, South Carolina, so much so that he was ranked as high as the 7th best graduating strong safety in the class of 2033.

So you could understand why he was puzzled when no one really recruited him that hard. Yes, there was interest from some schools, but it’s not like a program was spending a lot of time pursuing him. The knock on Jackson was that he was a physical player but lacked cover skills.

For Jackson – or JJack as he’s known to teammates – it was crushing.

Jackson was a gamer, a student of the game who studied film of the great players to play the position. Whether it was Ronnie Lott, Troy Polamalu or Jamal Adams, Jackson studied them all in an attempt to get an edge. Yet it appeared that the dream of playing football at the NCAA level was going to die.

                                Then Penn State came calling.

The more PSU Head Coach KC Duane saw of Jackson, the more he liked him.

The Nittany Lions staff loved Jackson’s nose for the football and his ability to compete. Jackson was eventually offered a scholarship by PSU and no one has been disappointed.

Jackson showed great promise as a freshman in 2033 with 25 tackles, 4 TFL’s, one pick and one sack in being named a Freshman All-American.

Given a starting role in the new 4-2-5 defence in 2034, Jackson has been a force despite missing time with broken ribs. Through 11 games, he has recorded 28 tackles, 6 TFL’s, a sack and a pick six against Michigan State which was the turning point in a 20-10 victory.
