    Re: #SWARM - The Reboot

Love the season preview, your squad is looking much more balanced and solid overall. The depth is lacking in a few positions, but overall your starters are all very solid at least, so as long as you can keep guys healthy and on the field (looking at you LOUIS), then you should be in line to challenge for the conference title at the least!

The Boise game should be tough though, they have a TON of talent at wide receiver so losing your best cover corner could really be tough. Might end up being an offensive shootout this year!

Thanks bro, glad you're gonna follow. Year 4 is definitely a great place to start, team is now almost entirely players that I've recruited, so I'm invested. I was actually looking at that old thread the other day, and I really have come a long way with presentation. Having a phone that takes decent pictures helps a ton.

Yeah we're a very solid team, a lot of talent on the roster. O-Line upgrades in particular are gonna help a lot. I don't see anyone who's really gonna challenge us in our division, NIU and Buffalo are very good in the West though. But, you never know who gets hot. Miami OH have consistently been a pretty good team, even if their record isn't that great, and Ball State has talent. If Buffalo had a better QB they would be clear favorites, but they're still starting Vantrease. They have like a 93 rated defense.

Boise game was pretty high scoring, that's all I'll say about it. Gonna try to get that recap up today, along with the next game preview.

      Thanks for checking in guys.

        Y4, G1 - @ Boise State

        August 28th, 2016

Swarm beat Broncos 44-27 to open 2016!

Walker throws for 326, 4 scores, though 110 YAC from Tristan Cox help pad his stats -- Swarm bailed put by awful Boise State QB play as the Broncos fail to utilize Pat Tyler -- Converted QB Marble looks good at WR

Tristan Cox had 185 total yards, 3 total scores

Boise, ID -- Westlake State is 1-0, winning their season opener for the first time ever. They went into Boise looking for the win, and got it behind great games from De'Aaron Walker and Tristan Cox.

While the last game these teams played on the Smurf Turf was a tense, defensive, 3-0 Swarm win, this game was loose and free-flowing. The Broncos eclipsed the amount of total points in that 2014 matchup within the first quarter, as they rode Pat Tyler's running and capitalized on a jittery Swarm offense to get a couple of good field goal drives.

Then Westlake State woke up. De'Aaron Walker found Calvin Foster on a curl, and Foster broke a tackle to get 29 yards and a much needed-first down, the Swarm's first on the day. But it looked like a field goal was all they'd get, as they sputtered, and a sack forced a 3rd and goal from the 6. But the speedy Tristan Cox would get open on an angle route, and he made a great catch for the first Swarm TD of the 2016 season. Boise State had to punt, but Cox muffed it, and the Swarm ended up punting.

Cox catches a TD for the first score of the season

Boise State stormed down the field, with Chase Cord finding open men for 30 yards and 28 yards on back-to-back plays, before Pat Tyler found the endzone from 4 yards out. The Swarm struck back, with a very long drive that saw no play go for more than 12 yards. Cox would score his first rushing TD for the Swarm (surprised he had no rushing scores last season) from a yard out to make it a 17-14 game. Cord led his team back down the field, and found tight end Tyneil Hopper for 33 yards to get into Swarm territory, but the very next pass he threw was picked off by Reggie Tate, who was playing nickel as Sean Louis and Terrance Owens were both unavailable.

This Reggie Tate pick flipped the game on its head

Westlake State scored pretty fast. Trent Brantley had a few good runs, then Walker hit his former backup Ricardo Marble for gains of 17 and 16 yards, before Tristan Cox showed why he's so special. The sophomore back caught the ball on a blitz-beating angle route, and managed to break a tackle as he caught it. After he bounced off the tackle, he just planted his foot, hit top speed in about 2 steps, and took it 40 yards to the house. The TD gave his team a 20-13 lead that they wouldn't relinquish.

TOP: Walker throws to Tristan Cox (right side, in white) to beat the blitz
MIDDLE: Cox breaks away from a Boise State defender
BOTTOM: No one caught him until it was too late

"Ridiculous. Straight up. Tristan is a pro, man, count on it." said Walker of the play.

Why 20-13, and not 21-13? Well, Grant Marquardt is gone, but the Swarm's kicking problems may not be. Freshman Justin Ward managed to hit the upright on this PAT, and he did the same thing later, on a 33 yard field goal.

After that score, there were a few empty possessions that took us to the half, before Ward missed that aforementioned field goal on the first drive of the second half. But Tate's INT must have gotten to Chase Cord. He missed 3 straight passes, under almost no pressure, forcing a 3 and out.

De'Aaron Walker led a good drive, but he would fumble the ball on a sack from inside Bronco territory. Guess what? Cord did the same thing again. 3 unprovoked misses. Westlake State got it back, and marched down the field, with a 35 yard grab from Tony Brown setting up a 6 yard receiving score from Mario Lane, the senior's first career TD.

On the previous drive, Todd Orlando decided he'd seen enough, yanking Cord in favor of backup Riley Smith. Smith started well, finding Stefan Cobbs for 42 yards, then running it for 12 yards himself to put Boise State about half a yard away from a score. Pat Tyler would score, and it was one of the more impressive goalline scores I've seen, as he was met a couple yards behind the line by linebacker Manuel Kirk, and despite having no momentum, he drove Kirk about 2 yards into the endzone before shoving him to the ground and staring him down. 27-20, Swarm.

"Get off me." -Pat Tyler, probably

This was a key drive. A stop here hands the Broncos the ball, with all the momentum on their side. And it looked like they may get the stop they needed after sacking De'Aaron Walker to force a 3rd and long from around midfield. But Tristan Cox came up huge. He caught a screen, and outran everyone to the edge before juking a safety to just about get the first. A few plays later, Walker hit Calvin Foster in the endzone, as the big receiver went airborne for an impressive grab.

Calvin Foster rises up for a TD

Down 34-20, Boise State still had a shot, but Riley Smith had the same problems as Chase Cord. 4 consecutive incompletions (one was a drop), saw the Broncos turn it over on downs, and the Swarm would score fairly quickly, with Tyndall Thomas getting in from the goalline. Riley Smith would find Khalil Shakir for a 72 yard score on the first play of the ensuing Boise drive, but the Swarm recovered the onside kick, and kicked a field goal with 2 minutes left to essentially seal the game. Boise State got nothing going, and Westlake State would kneel out the clock.

Riley Smith looks on as he overthrows Tyneil Hopper

The Swarm remain on the road and will head down South to play Middle Tennessee State next week.

        Coach Barkley's Take

This was a good win, no doubt, but you've gotta wonder how much of it was lucky. Todd Orlando's playcalling was questionable at best, as he only gave star tailback Pat Tyler 18 carries, and just 4 in the entire second half. De'Aaron Walker played a fantastic game, and the fact that he didn't throw a pick was very encouraging, but 121 of his 326 yards went to Tristan Cox, and 110 of those came after the catch. In total, 208 of Walker's passing yards came after the catch, and he missed on the few deep balls he threw, including what should have been a 64 yard score to Tony Brown early in the game. Run game looks good though, Brantley was getting damn near 8 a carry before he left.

Defensively, we did not get a sack. We actually barely got pressure, and if Cord and Smith weren't playing like hot garbage for Boise, we might have lost. All in all, we're lucky to walk out of here with such a big win, game felt much closer that what it was.

Lol we both set Boise up in the same uniform for our visits...too bad we got different results!

Huge win, this team has a ton of potential. Walker was on fire man, and Cox is a huge weapon for him. I have high hopes for the year after this showing

I don't believe I saw your Boise game... I'll check it out in the morning, it's like 1:30 right now lol.

Definitely a lot of potential here. I'm interested to see what we're really made of against Michigan State, I'd be really happy to see us stay within a couple scores there. Walker threw the ball well, though I wasn't very aggressive because Cox was destroying everyone after the catch so there was no need. Threw deep like twice all game.

Looking at our division, I don't think anyone should challenge us. We should run the table. Buffalo and your CMU team have the most talent, but you're in the other division. I'm getting way ahead of myself and NCAA will probably put me in my place and I'll lose to Ohio again or something, but this is a good team. Defense is looking kinda suspect, backers and secondary are good but our pass rush was horrible. Seriously, if Boise's QBs don't play like s--t, this is a one score game.

              Thanks for checking in bro.

                Y4, G2 Preview

                These teams have never met.

                Coach Barkley's Take

Still no good picture of him, game hasn't given me the chance to get one. Probably have to wait for a home game.

This team is pretty similar to Boise State, talent-wise. Worse backs, but they have even better top receivers in Nico Collins and Allen Dailey. Kyle Banks is a solid dual-threat QB, and he may need to use his legs behind a mediocre O-line. Their defense is good across the board. Lot of speed, and a very good starting corner tandem. Their ends aren't great, so our tackles shouldn't have too much trouble on regular 4 man rushes.

They could play you tight, they are a not bad at all. Keep Walker focused, if he can protect the ball I like your chances. Good luck in this one, road games are tough. Especially using Jkit's sliders...I know from experience lol

I love MTSU's helmets, honestly. I've been a Cowboys fan my whole life (don't judge me, I've dealt with 20+ years of disappointment at this point!) and their helmets look just like them!

Anywho, best of luck, grab another win!

Thanks bro! Getting to 2-0 would be awesome, and we have our home opener after this one as well. If their QB play is good, WR Nico Collins may give us real problems, he's a stud.

I love MTSU's whole uniform set, honestly. I considered doing them when I came back to the boards but ultimately decided to reboot the Swarm. I'm gonna go ahead and play the game now, nothing to do today as it's really hot out and I currently don't have a gym membership. Might even get 2 games done today.

                        September 4th, 2016

Come on De'Aaron! Walker tosses 3 picks, fumbles twice as Swarm lose

Walker leaves injured, listed as probable for next week -- 5 turnovers, easily could have been more as Swarm fumble 5 times -- Absence of Louis, loss of Woods hurts defense

Likely Day 1 pick Nico Collins made this 39 yard grab look easy

Murfreesboro, TN -- Westlake State came into Johnny "Red" Floyd Stadium confident, maybe even expecting a win after beating Boise State handily last week. That didn't happen. 5 turnovers, several huge penalties, and sloppy play all around saw the Kyle Banks-led Blue Raiders win this game 30-17.

Westlake State scored 3 points in the entire first half, a 35-yard field goal with 26 seconds to go in the first half. Kyle Banks threw for under 100 yards, starting tailback Brian Anderson went down injured, and Isaac Robinson picked off a pass. So how were the Swarm down 13-3 at the break? De'Aaron Walker tossed 2 picks, lost a fumble, and when he finally got his team into the redzone, he left the game due to a back injury and Jacourey McKinley had to relieve him. McKinley was awful, as aside from a 10-yard run, he missed an open man, got stuffed for no gain, and fumbled while scrambling behind the line. Luckily, Joe Edwards fell on the fumble, and Justin Ward kicked a 35 yard field goal to put the Swarm on the board before Walker returned for the 3rd quarter.

Middle Tennessee scored to open the half, with Kyle Banks finding Rashaun Allen open over the middle for a 26-yard catch-and-run, and backup Derrick Miller gashed the Swarm for several good runs before Banks found star wideout Nico Collins from 2 yards out for a score.

Walker would throw his 3rd pick, again holding the ball too long and throwing up a prayer. A facemask call on Malik Price on a run stop kickstarted the Blue Raiders' next drive, and a 25 yard run from Kyle Banks set up a short 27 yard field goal, which was surprisingly missed.

The Swarm looked they'd gotten back into it, as Walker found Daniel Thompson for 22 yards, then Trent Brantley got going to set up a short TD strike to Tony Brown. The Blue Raiders came right back, as their next drive was almost a mirror image of their last: facemask on Malik Price, big run from Banks before Miller got them inside the 10, where Banks scrambled for a TD from 5 yards out.

Westlake State scored again, but it came at a price: De'Aaron Walker was hit hard as he tried to scramble for a first down, and this time he would not return. He appeared to strain his back, and is probable for next week. Jacourey McKinley came into the game with the ball at the 2, and he would keep it himself for his first career score.

Middle Tennessee K Johnny Williams missed a 55 yard kick wide right, and with the Blue Raider lead at 27-17, this game wasn't over. But, McKinley lost the ball after scrambling for a first down, and even though Banks fumbled 2 plays later, giving the ball back to Westlake State, the Swarm wouldn't score again, as McKinley and the offense went 4 and out.

In addition to Walker, Darnell Woods was lost for the game early with an undisclosed upper body injury. He too, is listed as probable, but him and Sean Louis being out really hurt the Swarm, as Nico Collins and Rashaun Allen went to work, combining for 171 receiving yards. Offensively, Tristan Cox was lost with an ankle injury on the second play of the game. He should be at 100% for next week.

Westlake State will play 0-0 Marshall in their home opener next week.

I put it all on De'Aaron to try to make plays, and he didn't really have it today. Just got down on himself after he tossed a pick, and it snowballed. Defensively, we were decent, but not having our top 2 corners killed us, it really did. We couldn't play man, couldn't play zone, we stopped the run a good number of times but our damn backers were facemasking everyone. Marshall is a good squad, and if we play like this next week we're screwed.

                          Y4, G2 - @ Middle Tennessee State

Note: Only 1 pic, for the reason I stated above. Recovered one snapshot I saved on the game. Shouldn't happen again, I'll be careful from now on. And I lost the recap the first time I typed it up, ffs my laptop is garbage. Sorry for the s--tty recap but stuff was out of my control.

The Swarm looked they'd gotten back into it, as Walker found Daniel Thompson for 22 yards, then Trent Brantley got the run game going to set up a short TD strike to Tony Brown.

                                Y4, G3 Preview

                                These teams have never met.

                                Coach Barkley's Take

This Marshall team is fast. WR Willie Johnson might be the fastest guy in the nation, and Sean Louis is still suspended, so no one on our roster even comes close. Their #2 WR Justin Townsend runs a 4.3, is a better WR in terms of skill than anyone we have, and he's only a sophomore. At QB, Garet Morrell is is a good dual-threat guy, similar to Kyle Banks last week. TE/HB/WR Cody Mitchell is gonna pop up everywhere, at 6'2, 240, he has solid speed and the moves of a running back. Their line is good, and with the way our pass rush has struggled, Morrell is gonna have time in the pocket. They have a top-heavy defense. The backups aren't good, and they only have 3 actual corners. They're gonna throw a 4-2-5 at us, something unconventional, and I don't know that they have the DB talent to run it properly. Safeties Paul Ford and Brandon Drayton are both pretty slow, so we will look to take the top off the defense.

Bottom line here is I expect Marshall to be very dangerous offensively. We will have to slow the pace down and control the clock, avoid getting into a shootout if we can. De'Aaron Walker will need to find guys deep, and we're gonna need a big play from Tristan Cox.
