Great win against UMass. A well timed screen pass can really do wonders. Hearn was on fire that day and Norton balled out.

Tough break to Akron, it was another reality check for sure. Bounce back, a bowl game is still within reach for this young program

I'm really hoping we can get bowl eligible. Just played against Kent State, and it was an amazing game. Looking through the forums I found something that really really helps the CPU passing game. Shift your run/pass D slider one tick to the left, and the CPU will call better passing plays and be more aggressive. Still ran quite a bit. The logic behind this is that the AI "knows" you're gearing towards the run. Lit us up. Appreciate you following as always bro.

On another note, do you think I should have Abrams go pro? He has 90 total tackles which is tied for the national lead, 9 for a loss, 4 picks, a sack, 2 deflections (should have a couple more, some animations don't count), FR and a pick 6. He's an 80 overall, probably 82 or so if I didn't edit everyone's injury rating down. He fits the profile of an NFL safety pretty well, 5'10, 205, 92+ in speed/agi/acc. He's been incredible for us this year, honestly without him I doubt we have more than 2 wins this year, he's everywhere. He's in line to win the Bednarik, Nagurski, and Thorpe awards. Yes I know there's a user bias, but he's genuinely been amazing this year. Usually I'll have a guy with like 60 solo tackles, but he really shouldn't be there because others have 90 total. Abrams has 90 total in week 11. Should I jack up his ratings to get him to an 88-90 rating, give him a shot at being a day 3 pick?

I’ll try that slider thing, that’s interesting.

As for Abrams, I don’t think he goes pro, personally. He’s in the MAC, which means lower competition. NFL scouts know it too, most guys don’t come out of the MAC early. They play all 4 years and still don’t go high in the draft.

He's a senior, sadly. I've never even considered doing this, but he's kept us from being the worst defense in the nation imo.

            Y2, G9 - vs Kent State

            October 26th, 2014

Another thriller as Swarm beat Kent State 30-28; one more win for bowl eligibility

Visiting QB Jacourey McKinley impressed, favoring Swarm over Golden Flashes -- Shane Hynes missed kick proves to be crucial for Swarm win -- Hearn, Norton with impressive games

Deonte Abrams had 3 picks on the day. Here he celebrates his pick-6.

Westlake, OH -- 2014 won't be the most successful year Westlake State football ever sees. But it may wind up being one of the most memorable. 3-0 win on the Blue Turf in Boise. 25-19 over Kansas State. 26-20 over UMass. Add in the possibility of going to a bowl game for the first time in program history, and 2014 will be remembered for a long time. Westlake State added to that list of memorable games this week, beating Kent State, the team who they beat for their first ever FBS win last year, 30-28.

Dionte Norton made waves again this week, as with Louis Dowdell leaving early due to a shoulder injury, Norton was the lead back once again. He delivered, with several key run on his way to 102 yards on just 20 carries. This wasn't just one long run either: his longest rush only went for 12 yards. Norton seems to have finally figured out how to use his quickness. Wendell Hearn bounced back after the rough loss to Akron, going 23 of 41 through the air for 250 yards and a score.

But the real star today was Deonte Abrams. The senior safety had 3 (!) interceptions, setting a new school record. He returned one of them for a 57 yard TD, and the other 2 were crucial.

Kent State looked like they might run away with it early, as it took George Bollas and the Golden Flashes only a couple minutes to score a touchdown, with Kavious Price catching the first of his 2 scores.

Westlake State would go 3 and out, and Kent State were marching downfield until Deonte Abrams jumped in front of a pass in the flat. He wasn't able to get much of a return, but he gave Westlake State some much needed confidence. Wendell Hearn found Thomas Green for a big gain, but then Louis Dowdell was hit hard and fumbled after catching the ball in the flat. He was shaken up and did not return. After a 4 yard gain on 2nd down, Wendell Hearn and the offense faced a 3rd and 10. Hearn dropped back, stepped up in the pocket and calmly found Green for another chunk of yards to move the sticks. The drive would stall out after a sack, and the Swarm ended up kicking a well-earned 34 yard field goal.

If Abrams doesn't pick this, Kent State probably end up leading 14-0 halfway through the first.

The ensuing kickoff was misjudged by Kent State's returner, and bounced off his helmet. It was recovered by the Swarm, but after a false start on the drive's first play, couldn't move the chains and had to kick a short field goal. Grant Marquardt would hook it too far, and it hit the right upright to keep the score at 7-3 for Kent State.

Bollas moved the ball well once again, as after a couple short throws, he found Johnny Woods deep downfield for a 48 yard gain. Woods was down at the 2, and Myles Washington ran it in on the next play. 14-3, Kent State.

It wasn't a blowout yet, but Westlake State were on the verge of losing any control over this ballgame, and a score was needed. Well, the offense delivered. Wendell Hearn and Dionte Norton moved the ball downfield with several runs and short throws, and a 17 play drive ended when Wendell Hearn found Thomas Green, who proceeded to break 2 tackles and get into the endzone for an 18 yard gain. But, wouldn't you know it, Grant Marquardt puts the PAT a few inches wide.

It was all god though, as the defense fed off of the offense's momentum, forcing a 3 and out. Westlake State scored again, as Norton and Hearn gained 54 rushing yards on just 4 plays to start the drive, and Marquice Pearson ended up running in a TD from a yard out. The Swarm 2 point conversion was good.

Kent State had a few minutes before the break, and Bollas was looking sharp, until he threw another ill-advised pass into the flat. Guess who was there? That's right, Deonte Abrams. This time he burst free, running it all the way back for a 57 yard pick-6. 24-14 Swarm, and this game had done a complete 180.

You will not catch this man if he has a running start like this

Westlake State got the ball back to start the second half, but ended up in no man's land, and didn't convert a 4th and 15, a questionable decision from Coach Barkley. On this drive, Wendell Hearn left briefly due to a left elbow injury, the same one he hurt against Ball State a month ago. Hearn was pressured all day, and it's a testament to how far he's come as a quarterback that he only went down in the backfield twice all game.

Kent State scored soon after the turnover on downs, with Kavious Price catching another score to make it 24-21. After a Swarm punt, the Golden Flashes went on a good drive, and were setting up a 27 yard field goal attempt as time expired in the 3rd.

The first play of the 4th quarter was the field goal attempt. A routine 27 yarder from the left hash, but Shane Hynes missed it. The miss would prove to be crucial. The Swarm then took the ball downfield, with Hearn finding Stanley Wayne up the seam for 48 yards. Wayne was then pulled down by his facemask, tacking on another 15 yards to the play. The Swarm ended up kicking a 22 yard field goal after failing to punch it in from inside the 10. 27-21.

Hearn finds Stanley Wayne for 48

Kent State football. George Bollas completes a few passes, and Myles Washington chips in a couple carries for a few quick first downs. Then near, the offense starts to stall, and Kent State faces a 4th and 6 from the 22. They went the aggressive route, going for it, and got the first down. After a nice scramble from Bollas, Kent State had the ball at the Swarm 5. They would only gain 2 yards on 3 downs, and had to make another choice on 4th down. They opted to go for it again, and Bollas came up big, finding Raekwon James for a 3 yard score, giving Kent State a 1 point lead with 4:37 left.

1st down. 4 yards, Dionte Norton. 2nd down. Wendell Hearn is pressured from the snap, and can't get away. Loss of 6, setting up a 3rd and 12. The Swarm had to convert, and did, with Thomas Green beating his man on a slant, and gaining yards after the catch, going down after a 23 yard gain. That got Westlake State to the opposing 46, and Kent State couldn't stop them until they got down inside the 10. The Golden Flashes made a stand, and forced the Swarm to kick another 22 yarder. 30-28, with 1:45 to go.

Marquardt has had a rough year, but came up big for us when we needed him today.

This drive, for the game. George Bollas started strong once again, getting a big chunk of yards on a completion to Johnny Woods, but for the 3rd time on the day, he tested Deonte Abrams' speed and instincts, and Abrams won that battle. He picked off Bollas for the third time on the day, and the Swarm were able to get a first down and run out the clock.

            The game-sealing pick

"He won us that game", said Coach Barkley of his star safety.

Abrams had words for Bollas, and any QB who tries to challenge him.

Westlake State impressed 3 star QB Jacourey McKinley, a dual threat from Westlake Prep whose college choice has come down to the Swarm and Kent State. McKinley could be seen wearing a Swarm jacket, sitting behind the bench, and went to the locker room to speak with Barkley after the game.

Westlake State will go play 4-4 (1-3) Buffalo, who will be starting their 3rd string QB due to injuries, next week. A win there would almost certainly mean a bowl game in just this program's second year of existence.

              October 30th, 2014

Wendell Hearn Will Leave Football After 2014 Season

Who will be the next Swarm QB? -- 5 recruits commit after watching dramatic win over Kent State -- Brantley's rehab behind schedule, will be shut down for the year

Westlake, OH -- Wendell Hearn announced on Twitter this morning that he will sign with whatever MLB team drafts him next summer. The junior quarterback has been pretty good this year, but he's an even better centerfielder. He batted over .400 with 21 homeruns and 19 steals last summer, and was drafted in the 4th round of the draft by the Oakland A's, but did not sign. This year, Hearn, who is still just 21 years old, will likely go in the first 2 rounds if he performs similarly to last season.

Hearn, pictured here following the team's upset of Kansas State, has been a huge part of the team's success in 2014

A transcript of Hearn's Twitter statement this morning:

I want to thank Westlake State University, Coach Barkley and the rest of the staff, along with my teammates and our awesome fans for an unforgettable 2 years here in Westlake. I've grown a lot as an athlete and as a person in my time here, and I wouldn't be going pro in anything if I never came here.

But, this season ain't over yet! We got unfinished business here in Westlake and I wanna be remembered here as a guy who won y'all y'all first bowl game. I'm committed until this crazy *** year is done. I love y'all, and I'll always remember my time here fondly. #SWARM
              Who will succeed Hearn?

The Swarm are currently looking at 4 quarterbacks: Jacourey McKinley, De'Aaron Walker, Fonzo Fisher and Marcus Henderson.

McKinley and Walker are both 3 star recruits from Ohio, while Fisher and Henderson are JUCO players. All of these guys can run, which is key for the uptempo spread offense that Dion Barkley likes to run. McKinley is pretty much a smaller, younger copy of Wendell Hearn: Fast, elusive, solid arm.

Walker and Fisher are both very much boom or bust guys: athletic, big arm, but accuracy and general mental makeup are a problem for both, especially Fisher, who has developed a reputation for not being too bright both on the field and off. He was kicked out of FSU. He has the highest upside on this list in my opinion: he'll be a sophomore next year and is already as talented as anyone in the country. He would tear up the MAC on athleticism alone.

Henderson is a good QB with limited upside. He's also the oldest, as he's a JUCO JR. He's the best bet to come here as of right now, and will probably start next year regardless of who else comes in. He's just solid everywhere, and plays a similar style of offense at JUCO.

Swarm nab first 5 commits of 2014

Westlake State football got 5 commitments following their win against Kent State. Here's a breakdown so you don't have to do any research.

              3* WR (#65) Alex Kirkpatrick - 5'11, 178, from Napoleon, OH

This guy is a little quick wideout who runs good routes and will get open. Problem is, his hands are very suspect, even against high school DBs. Solid return man, decently elusive and a pretty good juke move. He will likely redshirt.

              SPD: 91 AGI: 84 ACC: 88 CTH: 58 SPC: 71 CIT: 59 RTE: 76 ELU: 72

              3* TE (#44) Blake Bentley - 6'4, 211 from Aberdeen, MS

Receiving tight end all the way. Very weak compared to what you usually see at the position, but he isn't a WR caliber athlete and has good blocking fundamentals. Might redshirt just so he can gain 15-20 pounds, but could definitely contribute from day 1.

              SPD: 77 AGI: 68 ACC: 80 CTH: 69 CIT: 65 RBK: 71 IMP: 68

              2* T (#113) Matt McKinney - 6'6, 280, from Leisure City, FL

This guy is a total steal. Lanky, athletic tackle who can block for the pass and the run. He'll definitely redshirt, with 2 guys who will be seniors ahead of him, but he should start in 2016.

              SPD: 68 AGI: 66 ACC: 90 STR: 80 PBK: 72 RBK: 77 IMP: 81

              2* G (#117) Adam Van - 6'6, 343 from Lima, OH

This guy is very out of shape. He needs to get down to the 310-320 range to be any good. He's slow footed, isn't actually very strong considering he weighs 340, and can't really move. You can see he's athletic in his first step and fluidity, just needs to replace some fat with muscle.

              SPD: 51 AGI: 58 ACC: 85 STR: 71 PBK: 72 RBK: 73 IMP:70

2* WR (#250, JUCO JR) Tony Brown 6'5, 229 from Eastlake, OH

This guy has me excited. 6'5, 230 with legit 4.4 speed. He's gonna play basektball for us too, and isn't super skilled, but he's an ATHLETE.

              SPD: 93 AGI: 78 ACC: 92 JMP: 91 CTH: 62 SPC: 76 CIT: 71 RTE: 67

The Swarm currently have the #111 class in the nation, per 247Sports.

Trent Brantley shut down for the year

Exciting freshman tailback Trent Brantley is done for the year. He suffered an ankle sprain in a game against Bowling Green a month ago, and is reportedly not even jogging yet. Head coach Dion Barkley announced he will not play for the remainder of the year, even if it means burning freshman Tristan Cox's redshirt.

Not sure if anyone's that invested in this yet, but does anyone want to create a coach? No shortage of jobs, especially here in the MAC. I'll make a form if anyone's interested.

Awesome season you guys are having, very interested to see if you can keep it up after Hearn leaves or if this is a one-year wonder deal (for now). Hopefully at least one of those quarterback recruits can pan out, McKinley seems like the safest play long-term but a JUCO guy can go so far for a young program. Every now and then I'll see that six win teams get left out of bowl season, so hopefully you can pull out two more to be safer.

I must say your graphics are really improving.. the box scores look wicked sharp.

Every now and then I'll see that six win teams get left out of bowl season, so hopefully you can pull out two more to be safer.

I must say your graphics are really improving.. the box scores look wicked sharp.

Yes please! I'll just copy from my thread to save you some work, if you need anything else, just let me know.

Yeah we're having a hell of a year, and honestly I see us stepping back big time in 2015 cause we lose Hearn and both safeties, and we just don't have anyone coming in that's as good. I hope we land McKinley, we're in the lead right now but he's visiting Kent State in week 12. If we don't get him, we'll probably land De'Aaron Walker, but Walker is gonna have a rough first year.

Thanks for checking in again, and I'll have your coach created at the end of the year. Probably gonna give you the Bowling Green job, they have some nice talent coming in but a bad coach right now. Don't know if you read through the whole recruiting update a few pages back, but they landed ATH Devante Walker, the 6'7 superfreak. Might put you at Miami of Ohio, they're a good team that needs a better coach.

I didn't realize Abrams was a senior. Maybe jack him up if you like, snag your first draftee lol. I didn't have on till like 2020

Great win over Kent state, I love it when the defense can step up to seal a victory. One away from bowl eligibility bro, one more! It has been a much improved year at Westlake, I'm sure the AD is happy to have picked his coach wisely.

Tough to lose Hearn, but not surprising. He's choosing a more lucrative path that will keep him from getting too beat up too. The incoming group at QB will be a major key to how your season goes...I know the feeling lol. I like the other recruits too, hopefully the receivers have a bit better hands than the scouting report would indicate.

Well if you like CMU you're in luck, their head coach is on the hot seat. If he doesn't get fired, I'll make you the OC. Might give you Ohio if their coach is gone, I kinda wanna have y'all in my division.

Losing Hearn is gonna suck, but he's been so beat up all year that it only makes sense he'd leave. I'm personally hoping we get McKinley or Walker to replace him.

Anyway, not sure about Abrams. I'm halfway through the Buffalo game, had to stop for a bit, but he had 2 picks in the first quarter and was just everywhere. Then he got hurt returning his second pick and we've looked shaky as hell. I'll probably put him up to an 86-87 and see if he sneaks into the 7th.

                        Thanks for checking in bro.

                          Y2, G10 - @ Buffalo

Swarm bowl dreams on hold after 27-10 loss to UB

Buffalo's top 5 D shuts down Swarm -- Hearn battered, leaves game several times -- Louis Dowdell's bad luck with injuries continues

November 9th, 2014 (the dates have been off on the writeups and stat graphics, I'll try to keep it in mind)

Theo Anderson killed a Swarm defense that was missing its best player

Buffalo, NY -- Westlake State will have to wait another week to try and get bowl eligible, as the second year program lost to now 5-4 Buffalo and its top 5 defense.

Buffalo's Dominic Johnson is their 3rd string QB, and it showed early as he was picked off twice by Deonte Abrams. Abrams now has 5 picks in the last 2 weeks to bring his total to 6 on the year. However, on the return for his second pick, he fell hard on his left shoulder and would not return. Luckily, he is expected to return for next week's home game against Ohio.

Louis Dowdell and Thomas Green were not so lucky. Dowdell was forced to leave the game twice after injuring his elbow, and he will have to wear a brace if he plays at all next week. Green was concussed while catching a pass late in the game, and he's been ruled out for the Ohio game.

Buffalo didn't score until their 3rd possession despite looking dangerous. Abrams killed off their first 2 drives with picks, and set his team up at the UB 32 to start a drive. But they couldn't score, with Grant Marquardt hitting the upright (yes, AGAIN), to keep it scoreless. The ensuing drive saw Bulls kicker Maurice Duncan make the first of his 4 field goals, this one a 37 yarder. After a stop, Duncan would end up kicking another FG, this one a short 22 yard kick to put his team up 6-0.

Westlake State answered back with their only TD drive of the day, as Wendell Hearn led the team downfield, and capped off the drive himself, running it in on the goalline. That took us to the break, and the second half was all Buffalo.

On the back of tailback Theo Anderson's running, they went and kicked field goals on 2 straight drives, while the Swarm couldn't get anything going with Wendell Hearn sidelined after taking a hard hit. Hearn left the game 3 times with upper body injuries. Anderson finished the game with 212 yards on just 28 carries.

Another stop, and the next UB drive saw one of the funnier TDs the Swarm will give up this year. Buffalo wideout Komathi Phillips ran a fade against man coverage, and as he beat Isaac Robinson, Robinson was running behind him pointing for safety help that never came. 19-7, Bulls, and the Swarm would only manage a 20 yard field goal in the 4th quarter. Emmanuel Reed vultured away a score after Anderson ran for 57 yards on one drive to set it up.

Robinson was beat so bad he was calling for help that wasn't there

I knew we were gonna lose then, and I'll take responsibility for that. I won't lie, I saw third string QB and thought "Yeah we going to a bowl" but he ended up playing pretty well.
Westlake State will go back home to play 4-6 (3-3) Ohio next week.

Hey Coach. Got a few new recruits for you here. Little late, but we have a while to pursue these guys. Got updates on some of the guys I told you about last time as well.

Number 1 is Clayton Thorson, from Defiance, OH. Very underrated 3 star end. Speed rusher, and he's pretty good at stopping the run too. Athletic guy at 6'1, 240. He's better than anyone we have now. Northwestern is fighting us for him.

On the O-line we have 3 star T Jordan Woods, out of Fremont, OH, and 2 star G James Henderson out of Piqua, OH.

I actually think these guys might swap positions, as Woods is 6'1, 303, and Henderson is 6'6, 336. As of right now, Henderson is definitely the better player. Woods is in better shape, but Henderson is way better at actually blocking.

So Wendell is leaving for sure. We still have those same 4 options at QB. We actually have a verbal commit from De'Aaron Walker, he will probably commit on his visit this week. But I like Henderson over him at QB in the short term, so we need to keep going for him. Kansas pulled their offer from Fonzo Fisher, and every other P5 school that was considering him has dropped him. I don't know what they know that we don't, but he visits this week. I think Jacourey McKinley is gonna go to Kent State. Don't be surprised if he commits on his visit there. Tulane as of right now is our only serious competitor for Marcus Henderson.

Johnny Ham, the stud G is favoring us right now, but Miami OH have gotten back in the race and still have their visit to sway him. Kentucky is a distant 3rd. He's my favorite non QB aside from...

Devante Walker, who's going to Bowling Green. Reminder: 6'7 240 pound wideout who can play safety and OLB. Yeah. (Guru, this is probably your guy next year... I'm jealous lol might have to play a couple BG games and just quit out before it's done)

Sean Louis is favoring us, as is Ronald Wright, so 2 good corners there. Mike Powers likes Akron, but he's visiting this week.

Our board is pretty much locked in at this point.

Gonna be starting the Madden stuff in 2016 or 17 when most of the real players are gone. Reason being, this roster has a weird rating scale and is a WIP. Tons of guys named X. XXXX. I'll just use fake classes for a few years and put some guys in manually, like I'll put Abrams in as a UDFA when I start it, see if he can stay in the league.
