I started off with JKits sliders, I've since tweaked them a lot

I do a fatigue reset at halftime, just switch it off for one play then right back on.

Coaching adjustment: slide your run/pass slider one tick to the left, opens up CPU passing game.

House Rules

I make a lot of creative liberties. I might take a 1 week injury, make it 5, edit a guy's ratings for the sake of a story or just realism. I.E, damn near every wideout having bad hands and good routes. 5'10, 160 pound corners with good coverage and like 85 speed. Corners having 90+ speed and acceleration but 78 agility. I don't cheat, I just edit ratings to make things more true to life for myself and also for the CPU.

I edit all injury ratings to produce more injuries, varies by position. I also make up injuries a lot, I generate them in preseason.

Recruiting wise, nothing much, but I'll keep it realistic. I won't recruit anyone who isn't interested until I'm a much bigger program. Even then, I won't just cherry pick the elite unsigned players. Don't expect to see anyone over a 3 star signing here for a good few years. Probably not until the guys from my first class are graduating.

Any recruit who I have a lead of over 1000 points on is considered a verbal commit. I can't spend more than 150 on him unless the dips back below 1000.

I won't redshirt any 5 star recruits, or JUCO guys. 4 star guys would have to be buried on the depth chart. And if I have a guy 85 or higher as a sophomore, I won't recruit anyone over a 3* until that guy is set to graduate. (except for positions where 2 guys will see a lot of time)

Ratings are subject to change based on performance. If a guy plays like s--t, he'll get his ratings nerfed. I also do some manual progression every offseason, using RNG.

I can't cut any incoming players or seniors.

Anyone who wants to transfer out can leave, players declaring will be allowed to leave if they'll be picked in the first 3 rounds.

Playbooks/Scheme

I originally wasn't gonna use a custom defensive playbook, but the generic ones really suck. My coordinator was using Multiple D, but they didn't have any 4-3. 4-3 Multiple doesn't have regular nickel. So looks like I'll be using custom playbooks on both sides of the ball. What I'll do is just use my DC's scheme and tweak it a bit. I use ask Coach on D tho, for playcalling.

I have 2 custom playbooks. One is short pass oriented, with a lot of option plays. I'll be starting with this one. As I get more talent, I'll ease into using my preferred playbook, which is predicated on spreading out the defense and taking deep shots to big, fast receivers. When the defense sits on the pass, easy yards on dives, counters, stretches with my tailbacks. I like going for big plays, which does backfire sometimes.

College football is coming to Westlake!

Westlake, OH -- It's official. Westlake State University will be the newest school to join the FBS ranks. The shock announcement confirms the rumors that popped up after the university's announcement last year that they would be renovating Westlake Stadium, which up to now was primarily used for the Swarm's soccer team.

Athletic director Joey Williams announced this morning that Iowa legend, and Super Bowl champion Dion Barkley would be taking the reins as head coach.

After his retirement, Barkley became the offensive coordinator at his former high school in Akron. It's easy to see why Williams chose him: his offense put up 63 points on Westlake Prep last year, and a few of his former players are on Westlake State's roster.

Barkley, a Heisman winner turned career NFL backup, is best remembered for his memorable performance in the second half of Super Bowl 49, where he was forced to step in for injured superstar Aaron Rodgers, and led the Green Bay to a 34-28 win over the New England Patriots.

Note: Barkley is a player from a Madden 12 franchise. He was never on my team, but I remember him being a backup on like 5 Super Bowl teams. Stepped in the one time for Rodgers, as a second year player. He was a weird player, came in mid-70s and didn't ever pass 82. Unfortunately for him he backed up Aaron Rodgers for most of his prime.

Barkley sounded optimistic about Westlake football, saying: "Really excited to be here. I'm from the state, I know everyone in Ohio football pretty much, even got to end my NFL career here. It's a chance for me to build something special here. I've coached a few of the guys on this roster and it'll be great to see them again. I want to build up this program and take us to the top of the NCAA."

The Swarm will be independent in their first year, playing their games at Akron's InfoCision Stadium, before moving into a freshly renovated Westlake Stadium in 2014, and joining the MAC. They will play 4 FCS teams and 8 FBS teams in their first year of existence.

Critics will say that the Swarm should have started in FCS or maybe even in Division II. We shall see if the experiment works. Regardless, football fans in Westlake finally have something to be excited about.

2013 Season Preview

2013 WESTLAKE STATE SWARM FOOTBALL PREVIEW

Roster

Shoutout to Hellisan for this roster format. Shoutout to sportsguru11 for the depth chart format.

Wendell Hearn is this team's starter for now. A JUCO transfer, Hearn is a good athlete, with a decent enough arm. But he has the build of a scatback, meaning he'll have to learn to avoid contact, especially behind this suspect o-line. Backing him up is Jeremy Ostrander, who's a more accurate passer, but doesn't have the mobility that Barkley's offense demands.

Dwight Cummings probably won't play this year. Great arm, but needs to learn the game and improve his accuracy. He's also a pure pocket guy, meaning that the Swarm will need to retool their offense if Hearn were to go down.

These guys are pretty easily the Swarm's best position group. Mason Benjamin and Jaron Alfred are both big, physical backs who can wear a defense down. True freshman Trent Brantley is a legitimately good back, who will be in line to start after his redshirt season. Dionte Norton is a jitterbug who will see snaps at tailback, wide receiver and kick/punt returner. Louis Dowdell is the odd man out, but he's still a very solid player.

This offense won't call on a fullback very often.

Expect Stanley Wayne and Zeph Connor to take on the lion's share of the receiving duties. None of these guys are very good, or have one refined skill. The 6-foot-5 Connor is probably the best of the bunch, and Wayne will get open in the slot, but the rest of these guys just don't have the physical ability or the skill to do much damage.

All 3 of these guys are blocking-oriented, and they're not all that great at blocking. That should be all you need to know. Jerald Hagen will probably catch less than 15 balls all year.

Willie Hester starts on the left, Gerry McKnight on the right. They're both decent, balanced tackles. McKnight's length could be a concern though, as he's just 5'11. Dane Chavez will backup both tackle spots. He's another short tackle, at 6'0, and lacks strength. (he's 6'0 290, messed up when I copy/pasted the table in word, forgot to change his height/weight)

Now the line starts to look pretty suspect. Julian Coleman will be the LG, with Brannon Mayfield at RG. Mayfield is actually quite a good pass blocker, but lacks the size and strength to move people in the run game. Coleman is stronger, but isn't skilled. There will only be 3 guards active (though Dane Chavez may take over the starting RG spot, and will likely move there next season), and Kelvin Gould is a huge liability.

Jovon Crowell is fairly sound technically. Unfortunately, he's out of shape. He gets tired quickly and isn't very strong. Ross Newman should be playing tight end.

Fair bit of D-Line talent. Walter Kramer and Jamal Mangum both have the athleticism to get around the edge and make things happen. Our starting tackles complement each other well, with Santonio Valentine as the big mauler and the quicker Gerard Britton able to penetrate.

Roshawn Hayes is really, really strong. Unfortunately for us, that's all he is right now. The redshirt sophomore will see playing time, it's up to him what he does with it.

Malcolm Roberts and Lamont Hale are both good backups, and could steal a starting spot should Kramer or Mangum underperform.

There's talent here. Korey Townes, Demarcus McQueen and Sergio Keith are all good athletes with some skill. Keith in particular should be able to use his speed to blow up plays. Brian Mooney, Tyreke Brewer, and Manuel Kirk could be our next starters at their respective positions, once the current guys graduate.

I like the 2 free safeties: Donte Oliver and Deonte Abrams. Abrams will be starting at strong safety. Both of these guys are fast, can tackle and cover. They should be able to cover up for our less than stellar corners. Quintin Elliott and Martin Finley are very "meh" players. Mediocre everywhere, and can't be left on an island. Keron Hurd is a track star who was cut after his freshman year at Toledo.

Abdul Coles is one to watch for. He has the physical makeup to play slot corner, and he can hit hard. Not a good fundamental tackler, but he's only a freshman.

Leslie Motley is a very good punter, which will probably come in handy. Grant Marquardt is a decent kicker.

Ended up going with only 3 FCS teams as I had to schedule my home games in weeks where Akron was on the road. I also couldn't find their logos anywhere.

Also, I won't focus on anything around the nation in this first preview. I'll show title winner, Heisman at the end of the year of course, but I want to keep the presentation streamlined for the first 3-4 seasons. I'll flesh it out more the deeper I get.

Akron, OH -- Westlake State's new football program played its first game yesterday, and it went better than expected, with the squad very nearly upsetting Akron, falling short 31-26. A slow start and sloppy mistakes were the keys to the win for Akron, who would score just 10 points after the first quarter.

Akron scored on just their second play from scrimmage. Deltron Sands caught a short pass from Kato Nelson on an angle route, and three Swarm defenders failed to bring him down, and Sands went 75 yards for a touchdown.

On the Swarm's first drive, Mason Benjamin got absolutely no blocking, being met as soon as he touched the ball on both first and second down. The Swarm faced a 3rd and long, and Wendell Hearn was sacked.

Next Akron drive looked to be more of the same, with the Zips gaining 18 yards on their first 2 plays. But an ill-advised screen pass saw Quintin Nelson jump in front of it with no one between him and the end zone. He went 58 yards to score the first touchdown in Westlake State football history.

But the Swarm failed to capitalize on Akron's mistake. Just 6 plays into the next drive, Kato Nelson shed a tackle and broke free for a 44 yard touchdown scamper. On the first play of the next drive, Wendell Hearn would underthrow a pass, and safety Jordan George was there for the pick. Akron only had 41 yards to the end zone, and only needed 3 plays to score, with Nelson again running it in, this time from 19 yards out.

Down 21-7, this game was looking like it might be a blowout. But then Benjamin and his partner Jaron Alfred started doing work. The pair got the Swarm all the way to the 2 yard line, bowling over defenders and taking chunks of yardage, to set up an easy score for Benjamin, the first offensive touchdown in Swarm football history.

But Akron came right back. A 13 play drive, which saw 3 3rd down conversions, ended with Van Edwards Jr. running the ball in from a yard out. The Swarm went on their own long drive, and managed a short field goal with 4 seconds to go in the half. The score at the half: Zips 28, Swarm 17.

The first half was high-scoring. The second half was anything but. The only scoring in the entirety of the 3rd quarter was a 44 yard kick from Grant Marquardt, which made it a one possession game.

And Westlake State would find the end zone a few minutes into the 4th quarter Another methodical drive, during which tailback/slot receiver Dionte Norton dropped an open TD pass that would have ended the drive a lot sooner (one of 2 drops he had), ultimately ended in another 2 yard touchdown run from Mason Benjamin.

The 2 point conversion was a chance to tie the game at 28, and put the pressure on an Akron team that hasn't scored since midway through the 2nd quarter. But Hearn was stuffed on a QB draw, and his team still trailed.

The defense forced a stop, and the Swarm offense had a shot at taking the lead. Jaron Alfred gained 6 yards on a dive, then Wendell Hearn was stuffed for no gain on a zone read. 3rd and 4. Hearn drops back, rolls right, sets his feet and fires to an open Dionte Norton... drop, 3 and out.

But the Swarm got another chance, as the defense came up big once again, this time with a goal line stand after a long Akron drive. The Zips were held to a field goal, and Westlake State could win the game with a touchdown.

Then Hearn threw a pick on the first play of the drive. Game over.

Despite the tough loss, head coach Dion Barkley was proud of the way the Swarm played.

Obviously you're never happy to lose. But today is a rare loss where I don't have many things to say, and I can honestly say we can hold our heads high. We went down early, but we rallied, and we were in a spot where we could have taken the game if things go a bit different. We're a bunch of guys who are walk ons, JUCO1 star recruits, came in from places where they didn't play. Mason [Benjamin] came to us from Florida State. They put 2 freshmen over him last year cause they thought he was trash. Wendell [Hearn] was playing basketball for a D3 school. For us to come in as a first year team, have less time to build chemistry, and almost beat that team? I'm proud of us today. We'll get a crack at them next year in the MAC too. But that team has some legit talent. We almost got a win.

It wasn't perfect. The Swarm's offensive line was completely overmatched. Benjamin and Alfred got yards because they're talented backs, but a lot of times they were getting stuffed before they took a step.

Unless you've got Barry Sanders back there, you can't expect 100 yards on the ground with a bad line. Wendell Hearn was bad. He went 9/24, only threw for 88 yards, and threw 2 bad picks. He was supposed to be a good runner, yet he showed little to no creativity running the ball. Part of his struggles were due to the line play, but 9/24 passing from a Division 1 quarterback is atrocious.

The Swarm will host FCS SE next week in Akron.

It went a lot better than I expected. Benjamin and Alfred were able to bail us out, and our defense stepped up in the second half. I think we could win 3-4 games this year off our running back duo. Remember we play 3 FCS teams.

UNISPIRED SWARM FALL TO FCS SE 33-24

Swarm trailed 27-3 at halftime -- Wendell Hearn completes just 10 of 25 passes

Note: The game doesn't save the player stats or names for FCS teams. Next time I play an FCS squad, I'll do the report right after the game, or at least take down names and stats. But for this one, the players will be referred to by their number and position. Also, I want to get through these first few years at a quicker pace, so s--t games like this will get shorter write ups, and if I have a few bad ones in a row, I'll combine them. Box score will be there every time though.

Akron, OH -- After a close loss in the first game in program history, Westlake State hosted FCS SE at InfoCision Stadium this week. Coming off of a near upset of the Akron Zips in week 2, head coach Dion Barkley hoped that his squad could ride that momentum to a win over FCS SE. That was not the case. While last week the Swarm were scrappy underdogs against a clearly superior team, this week they got handled in what was talent-wise, a pretty even matchup, with the FCS squad scoring more points in the first half then the Swarm would score all game. From Wendell Hearn completing only 10 of his 25 passes, and getting held to just 106 total yards, to Jaron Alfred averaging under 3 yards a carry, to the Swarm defense giving up a whopping 192 rushing yards on just 30 carries, Westlake State looked awful in what was a very winnable game.

Westlake State received the opening kickoff and promptly went 3 and out. They managed a stop, forcing a short punt, and went 3 and out again. FCS SE drove down the field and managed a 28 yard field goal. The Swarm went 3 and out again, this time managing to move backwards. FCS SE got the ball back, and this time they weren't messing around. After a couple good runs, they lined up in a flexbone set, and the pitch on the triple option went to FB #39, who went 38 yards, shedding a tackle to break free for a score. 10-0.

After a couple stops were traded, Westlake State got on the board with a 25 yard kick from Grant Marquardt. Little did they know, they wouldn't score again until almost halfway through the 3rd quarter.

FCS SE went on another long drive, with HB #34 capping it off this time. Then on the Swarm's next drive, DT #94 burst through the line, flattening Wendell Hearn, who lost the ball, and LE #61 scooped it up for a 15 yard touchdown. The Swarm got the ball right back, and it happened again. #94 with another sack, #61 with another recovery, and FCS SE kicked a field goal to make it 27-3 at the half.

Then Westlake State woke up a bit, but it was already too late. A 14-0 3rd quarter saw Hearn throw his first TD of the season, a dime in traffic to Dionte Norton, followed up by a fumble return touchdown from Donte Oliver, but the Swarm were still down 10, with an anemic looking offense. However, another stop, and a good drive capped by a Jaron Alfred score cut it to 3.

Then the Swarm folded up. Choke? Fatigue? Who knows. Either way, the Awarm were in another spot where they controlled their own destiny, and down 3, failed to score for the remainder of the game, while FCS SE were able to kick a pair of field goals.

Head coach Dion Barkley was unavailable for comment after the game, leaving quickly.

Westlake State play 0-2 (0-0) Miami of Ohio nest week in Oxford.

I don't think I've ever lost to an FCS team before. Combo of a bad team and tough sliders. Wendell Hearn might have to go to the bench, though his backups aren't really any better and don't fit the offense. Already played the Miami Ohio game, that was a really tight game, best one so far. Might update tomorrow before France play Belgium (Allez Les Bleus!). Gonna play Ohio tomorrow for sure. These first few years are gonna be tough. I'm being tough on myself with who I can recruit too, so there's a ton of 2 stars on my board, even some 1 stars. Don't really have any good QBs either so Hearn is gonna be our guy until he graduates most likely. Hoping for some good transfers after the year, cause we really suck right now.

In '14 at least, I don't think you can track FCS teams' stats at any point, even during or immediately after the game.

Anyway, wanted to drop in and say good luck with the re-rebuild. Seems you've got some decent pieces for this year, but hopefully you can find some recruiting gems scouring the 2 and 3 star ranks.

Seems like you've got a long road in front, Don't feel bad about losing to an FCS team.. I almost lost to an FCS team in season 1 of UConn too. That just shows you're in for a challenge, which will be more rewarding in the end.

Roster posts looked great and I appreciate being used for inspiration; kind of funny though as I haven't used that depth chart graphic in about a year. I also created a teambuilder school for myself with the exact same roster template you used lol.

Appreciate you checking in bro. We definitely got a long road in front of us. There are some decent players on the team, but we have no depth, and lack an offensive line, which is always the toughest position group to build up for me. We also lose both our good running backs after this season which is gonna suck.

Another tough loss, but nobody said a startup program would get easy wins. Slowly and steadily I'm sure you will improve.
